The Mercure Exeter Rougemont Hotel receives high marks for its cleanliness and central location, making it a hit with travelers who value proximity to local attractions. While the staff's friendliness is often commended, some visitors have experienced slow service. The hotel's ambiance is noted for its historic charm, although the decor could use some refreshing. Guests enjoy the amenities but suggest enhancements to the bar and breakfast options. Room quality is inconsistent, with some finding them spacious and others outdated. Despite praise for its value, the criticisms of costly parking and breakfast, coupled with noise disturbances, are notable drawbacks.

I visit Exeter once or twice a year for my work and the Rougemont is a hotel I have used a few times before. The location, directly opposite the Central train station, is perfect for me and most of the delegates who come to my training events there. For those who drive to the hotel, car parking is limited and I believe is subject to a charge.

There was a bit of a queue at reception (several people arriving at the same time) and although I had checked-in online in advance there appeared to be no way of avoiding the lengthy wait to collect my envelope and room key. The staff on reception were cheerful and friendly and generally I was looked after very well during my stay.

I received an upgrade to a Privilege room (as a Silver Accor Member) and despite the building being pretty old the room had a modern feel to it with smart décor and was well-equipped (safe, iron and board, mini fridge with some complimentary soft drinks, Nespresso machine, kettle and plenty of coffee and tea). Wi-Fi was free and worked well. There were plenty of power sockets, a comfy bed, decent bathroom with bath and shower, toiletries, plus robes hanging in the wardrobe.

Breakfast was ok but nothing special, and the coffee was poured from a pot on a table and was a bit stewed. Our training event was well served with treats such as doughnuts and cake being provided at break times, although lunch was a bit disorganised as the queue started at the end of the table with desserts on and finished with the hot food and finally the plates...it really needed to be presented in the reverse order or the queue should have been directed in from the other end.

I do like the building itself...full of character with its chandeliers and grand staircase, and the staff here are great...and I am sure I will be back.

Stayed for two nights with husband. we booked a long time ago and was not excessively expensive however if we were paying the current rate this would definitely get less of a rating. Firstly can I say that all of the staff we interacted with were lovely, helpful and engaging. Sadly the general state of the room let this hotel down. Its just jaded around the edges. We were initially put in room 319 which was on the third floor and an inner room so we thought great, it will be relatively quiet as its a city centre location. Within 30 seconds of being in the room I decided I had to move as there was no way it was going to be restful. The room overlooked a quadrant where the aircon/vent/fan for the kitchen was and it was LOUD! apparently it starts at 7am and finished at 10-11 pm. Anyway we got a move and was put in a side room on the first floor 115. The room was quiet during the day, traffic noise etc but nothing OTT. At night was a different matter, the F**ing and blinding and screaming from outside the pubs/clubs etc meant we had to shut the window...however no aircon so the room was baking hot. the room itself was lacking, there was no mirror over the dressing table, I had to move the table and chair to the wardrobe to do my hair. Two coat hangers in the wardrobe and nowhere else to hang you coats etc. The extractor fan in the bathroom didn't work and paint was peeling off the ceiling, the door had obviously been exposed to flooding as was warping at the bottom and there were several little moths that kept appearing just when you thought you had got rid of them. bring your own toiletries, one shampoo and shower gel was just not enough and the room didn't get serviced whilst we were there. I also had to get up on a chair to put the curtains back on the runners as they were hanging off.
I am pleased that we didn't have to spend any time in the room and was out sightseeing except when sleeping.
I wouldn't choose this if I wanted a relaxing break however ideal if you wanted to be in the busy city centre.
On a plus side we did enjoy the breakfast which was adequate and filling , had the late sitting which was 10am so ideal and I reiterate that the staff were great and they didn't quibble at all about the room move.

This hotel is in a great location, right in the city centre, opposite the train station and had on site parking available. But unfortunately a few things let it down. The rooms were nice, could do with a freshen up as ceilings were cracking and walls are slightly scuffed up. Bed was comfy and bathroom had the smell of silicone as if they had recently been done up. But again, cracked/damp looking ceilings. Large TV and also USB sockets next to the bed.

My big complaint is that the receptionist was rude. As my room was booked via a company, my last name was wrong on the booking. I did not know this and gave my actual last name. They could not find me on the system for obvious reasons and preceded to tell me that i was lying about me own name. I also asked if there was a hotel bar, (was not told about any if the hotel facilities on check in either) and the reply i got was “why would a hotel have a bar” and then “its down there”. A simple yes and its this way would of been nice.

Its a shame as the receptionist the next morning was very helpful and polite.

Welcoming staff on reception. Room on the 2nd floor overlooking the Main Street and car park. Double bed for single occupancy. Full length black out curtains stopped the heat from the radiators heating the room. Easily fixed by folding the curtains up to window sill to allow the heat to warm the room. Still a draught whistled in under the window sill. The bed was comfortable but the pillows were like slabs of rock. The room was quiet and a large smart tv took up a fair size of space on the wall. The decor of the room was tired and dowdy. An iron and ironing board provided and worked well. A hair dryer was in situ. Tea and coffee facilities available. The en suite was a hazard to health! Far too small and the bath screen only opens towards you. The height of the bath is far to high and the bath has no decent anti slip surface worth talking about. The shower is excellent with rainfall and hand held facility. The one grab rail is useless as it is poorly positioned. Getting out of the bath after a shower was downright dangerous. A towelling bath mat is provided for standing on once out of the bath but the wet bath when showering is hazardous. The tiles have, in many places, not been grouted and the en-suite was not cleaned properly before my arrival. I was told at reception that there would be no housekeeping during my stay! The toiletries provided seem single use and take some strength to snap off the top to use the contents. A feat of strength in itself!
I was on a bed and breakfast basis. There is a good selection provided at the buffet style self service. The scrambled eggs provided are best avoided as, frankly, they are an insult to the chickens that may or may not have provided the so called “eggs,” tasteless. Ask for a fried egg from the most helpful staff and you will quickly get a decent egg for breakfast and asked , “ how many would you like, sir?” I attended a gala dinner on the Saturday evening hosted in the hotel. An absolute disgrace. Good food ruined.
The hotel is in an ideal location, has parking and importantly has fantastic, courteous, helpful and pleasant staff. The staff are let down badly by the product they try very hard to do justice to. At over £280 for two nights B&B I will not be rushing back nor will I recommend Exeter Mercure Rougemount. Mercure, you should be ashamed.

I booked this hotel at the last minute having been let down by another booking.
Paid £159 and was told free parking available. When I arrived I was charged an additional £12 for parking.
The room (102) was very tired paint and furniture chipped and bathroom had water damage to panels, the bed was worn out and uncomfortable. The window overlooked an area that seemed to generate much noise till the early hours.
So after a dreadful nights sleep I went to breakfast (restricted to either 6.30am or 7.30am) what a disappointment cold food that had been under lights for a long time, shrivelled, hard and cold.
This hotel is terrible so expensive for what you get. Only positive thing to say is the lobby and staircase were impressive is you didn’t trip on the thread bear stair carpets or tape repairs.
My advice try a local pub b&b much cheaper, cleaner, better service, nicer rooms etc.

We booked a twin room for three nights at an amazing price direct with the hotel. The room was a fair size, spotlessly clean with sufficient amenities including an iron and board. It was clearly stated at reception the measures in place due to Covid. There would be no staff entering the room, but any requests for towels or additional toiletries/coffee etc could be collected from reception.

Unfortunately due to an unforeseen problem, we had to leave the hotel after our first night. The receptionist was able to process a refund for the rest of the booking.

Amazing value, courteous staff and a warm, clean room. What more could we want? We certainly will use this hotel when we need to visit Exeter again.

Good Central location, parking is very limited and costs £12 a night. If you can't park on site you have to try and park on the road bearing in mind this is central exeter, ,or find a multi story at £15 a night. Both charges add up if your here for a few days. You also cannot reserve a parking spot. I have spoken to the reception and was told its made very clear on there site.... its not! it just says parking (paying) rooms clean but small and the bath screen leaks all over the floor when showering. If you are bringing your car with you I would look for another place to stay or add £12-£15 a night to your budget. Would I use this hotel again? No

I recently spent two nights at the Mercure Rougemont, just post-COVID. The place was empty, only a few guests. Rooms were clean and spacious.
The room wasn't serviced and toiletries not topped up on our first night. Probably this had to do with trying to minimise unnecessary exposure, but would have appreciated some cleaning.
The parking was not included in the price of the stay. This may well be in the hotel's website but was not clear when making a reservation through booking.com.
Since the dining room was closed, the breakfast was poor, mostly consisting on pre-bagged items, which were left by the doorstep every morning. For 'fresh' coffee one had to go to reception, and even then it was from a dispenser, so we ended up getting it from outside. While understandably the hospitality sector is just starting to recover, we do believe attention to detail was lacking and a lot could be improved.

I’ve stayed in Mercure hotels before and am never that impressed, sadly! This was just one night for a work trip, but I wouldn’t really recommend it for anything else. The one saving grace was that the staff were very friendly and helpful.

My single room had a bed against one wall, and felt rather like student housing! It was either baking hot or freezing cold. The decor was rather tired and could have done with a touch up.

The bathroom was ok, but one of those which has a large floor area for no apparent reason - it wasn’t much smaller than the bedroom.

Breakfast would have cost me £15.50 had I paid separately and it was really no more impressive than you would get in a Travelodge and definitely inferior to Premier Inn. Tea and coffee were from vacuum flasks which, as a tea drinker, is very irritating as the water is never really hot enough to make a decent cup.

All in all, I would rather have been in a Travelodge or Premier Inn, at least there you know what you’re getting!

Cannot comment on the rooms as we only went in the function room. Well we had a 120 mile round trip to attend a Dinner/Dance on Saturday night. The tables were fairly attractively set out although the layout of the room is not ideal with the dance floor being central and all the guest seating divided into two halves, so in effect a bit separated.
The food was the worst I have ever been offered at a social gathering especially from a supposedly four star hotel. The "hot" buffet was stone cold, from a party of around seventy guests we went about half way to the buffet to find empty trays and the bit of food that was left was stone cold. The pile of plates were stone cold and there was not much food left to put on them anyway. When we took the meagre offering back to our table there were no serviettes and no condiments on the table. There appeared to be two or three youngsters in charge of the food and nobody in authority overseeing the occasion. A couple more trays of reheated stuff appeared by which time we went up for dessert. No dishes to be found and no profiteroles left. My husband and I managed to find one plate intended for the main course and we shared a small piece of cheesecake between us. Obviously they realised their error and (too late) brought out dish of mixed tinned fruit, so they probably went short at breakfast the next day. No tea and coffee to finish off with either. The whole meal was unprofessionally presented and a disgrace and I felt sorry for he organisers as it was not their fault. All I can say is, if you are organising a special function of any sort DO NOT GO THERE!
