Upmarket hotel with lovely restaurant attached, breakfasts were excellent with very attentive service. Only downsides was size of our room bit cramped and very loud and noisy people coming in from the street to the champagne bar and for dining which spoilt the intimate atmosphere slightly.

We were extremely lucky and pleased to be upgraded to a suite! It was fantastic, really spacious, great view of the cathedral! We were there for an overnight birthday break, the staff had put a birthday card and a tray of petit fours in the room too. Definitely recommend.

Marshmallow bed. Sloping floors. Loud air conditioning fan farm. Fantastic breakfast, rooms clean and tidy, staff very pleasant. Location opposite Exeter Cathedral is very nice. Watch out for significant numbers of homeless people in shop doorways and sleeping spots nearby as the evening approaches.

The ABode (more easily identified as the Royal Clarence) is in a wonderful location for work or pleasure, right opposite the Cathedral. It combines the efficiency of a chain with the charm of a private hotel. Staff are very helpful and my room was very comfortable and well fitted. It almost deserves five stars but it is just a little...

Great location. Comfy rooms. Friendly, helpful staff. Nice breakfast. If you want a room with a cathedral view, call and ask for advice before booking as they all vary even within same price range. Really well situated for exploring central exeter on foot.

I found the service brilliant, room was spotless and the food was amazing. Just had trouble sleeping because of a air conditioning unit outside our window. This is my 4th visit and I would come again but maybe ask for a quieter room.

We booked two nights here at a good price relative to published rates, but who would pay some of their advertised prices is beyond me. One night we had DB&B, the second night room only. We were aware of the lack of car parking facilities before we booked, but this does add about £11 per night to your stay and...

My wife and I liked the character of the hotel including the accommodation. The position in the cathedral square affords magnificent views and there is very easy access to the city centre. The dinner in the Michael Caines Restaurant was enjoyed by our party of four. I have mentioned our slight disappointment about the very restricted vegetarian choice directly to...

Beware upgrades in this hotel! Ours revealed what the receptionist already knew, that the heating did not work, nor the DVD . . nor the bathroom floor lights . . and strangely a picture light with no picture. Promises by her colleague to supply a heater and fix the DVD were empty - and the manager said he knew nothing...

Great location but no parking facilities. Rooms are tiny and expensive. Lack of space for additional luggage. We were lucky of being able to change the initial allocated noisy room to a better one. Minibar in the room was missing .The "Autumn Escape" package included a two course dinner, which turned out to be more a snack than a meal,...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Looking to the future of The Royal Clarence, we have every intention to rebuild the hotel with enormous sympathy.. The 18th-century hotel, said to be one of the oldest in England, was gutted when a blaze spread from an adjacent building on Friday morning. The fire wrecked the inside of the landmark building and left the frontage on the brink of collapse. ... more   less
