Myself and my Girlfriend stayed here last night and were very happy with the hotel. Its in an excellent location, right on the start of the Iron Bridge at the edge of the city.
Staff are very friendly and all very covid aware so felt very safe.
The rooms are above the pub and room seven we had was very cool with a queen size bed and large fully tiled bathroom.
We slept soundly after spending all day and night in the city, there is a mini bar in the room should you wish to have something in there, also room service is available.

Breakfast was included in the room rate so I had a lovely full english served in the conservatory which was very tasty.

All in all a very nice stay in an interesting hotel.

We arrived on the Friday afternoon slightly earlier than the advertised check in time, the friendly staff found us a table by the fire and supplied us with the most amazing coffee whist we waited to check in, this started the weekend off great and was a reflection of what was to follow.
We were shown to our room which was very spacious, well equipped and had a beautifully decorated bathroom, the mini bar was a major bonus with everything you could want inside!
Breakfast was fresh, piping hot and well worth the money. We ate at the restaurant Saturday evening and would highly recommended the lamb!
If I was to be picky I would mention that no housekeeping during the 3 night stay was unusual but totally understood given the current climate and efforts to keep visitors/ staff safe.
If you’re planning a little weekend away make sure to visit the quay, lovely little spot with bars and restaurants lining the waterfront.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and next time we’re down visiting family will not hesitate to book the City Gate!

We stayed here overnight on our way to the Cotswolds. The rooms are in a pub and came with breakfast and diner included which was very convenient as we were traveling with small children. The rooms are small but wonderfully decorated, lovely toiletries are provided and they were spotless. The food in the pub was satisfactory and the service very friendly. Parking was in a multistory opposite with a small area to stop the car to offload baggage before parking. There was some disruption at night from the persons staying on the same floor but this could have been a one-off incident. Exeter centre itself is not a tourist destination but the hotel rooms are pleasant enough to make for a comfortable overnight stay

Stayed here for a 10th anniversary weekend away, paying £210 per night and hoping for a lovely room. However, there were soooo many things wrong, it was clear that this place is just taking the money and not giving any care to the upkeep of the rooms, and it left a sour taste in our mouths.

When I tried to open the wardrobe, the handle wasn't properly attached. The TV was hanging, lopsided, off the wall (the fixings pulling out of the wall on one side). I put my toiletries bag on the glass shelf above the sink, and it instantly rotated, dropping everything into the sink. The carpet was stained. There were several downlighters out in both the bedroom and in the ridiculously claustrophobic bathnook ("bathroom" would be too generous).

We quickly felt that we were being taken for mugs, and left us wishing we'd picked another hotel where the guests were appreciated. When we told the reception about the shelf etc, she cheerfully said something like "Oh, yes, we know about that stuff" before at least deigning to change the failed bulbs. Brilliant. If our room reflects the standards in the rest of the hotel, they need to take a hard look at themselves.

On the plus side, the staff were generally friendly (though one waiter, too kool for skool, seemed to be on another planet in which he was the new Eminem - his rapping in the turning space next to the hotel was, at least, committed).

And the breakfast was nice, and the food and service was fine.

But, look, for those prices, you deserve something better. Certainly we will never be returning.

Ideal hotel for our short break.
We booked a “Cosy Nights Stay”deal which was very good value. The hotel is well placed to explore the centre of Exeter: the cathedral and shopping centre with many restaurants for eating and drinking out.
The only point to note is the lack of on site parking. There are 2 car parks within a few hundred yards of the hotel. We missed the entrance to the recommended one and paid a touch more for overnight parking in the other one which is attached to a shopping and dining complex. Also the better car park can be paid using an App. Ideal for the next morning.
Our room was comfortable. We liked the decor which gave a nod to local sheep and wool. It was configured with 1 large bed. The bathroom had a roomy shower enclosure with handheld or rainfall shower head. The TV had Sky channels.
The package included a meal on the first night. The menu is fairly short but covers a reasonable range of options. All our food was good. I especially enjoyed the goats’ cheese fondue starter. Breakfast was freshly cooked to order and also good although the cold buffet was quite limited which might bother some people.
The staff were all very pleasant and helpful. Ruth waited on us for our first night meal. Nicola was on reception and helped with breakfast. There were others who assisted along the way.

My husband and I stayed here after a friends wedding was held at the hotel. We found all the staff very helpful and friendly, eager to help out and thought of all sorts of little details I liked. The venue was lovely, lots of different rooms to escape to if you like, the basement was great for dancing.
We loved our room, it wasn’t very big but well designed, decorated and thought out. The bathroom was particularly lovely with all sorts of complimentary toiletries and lovely big white towels. The bed was super comfy and was a superking so plenty of space. The curtains kept all the morning light out so we had a glorious layin. The Nespresso machine and capsules was very welcome along with the cookies and port. We would definitely go again.

My husband and I recently visited City Gate in Exeter as a last minute thing for our 2nd Wedding Anniversary. We were delighted that our room had been upgraded because of our Anniversary celebrations. Our room was an excellent size that was well furnished with good quality furnishings and beautiful decor that was in keeping with the building (see pics) The rooms were spotless and the bathroom and towels were immaculate. Each and every staff member that we encountered during our staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful and there was a lovely homely relaxed atmosphere in the bar/restaurant area. We had dinner and breakfast during our stay and both were delicious and fantastic quality produce used at very reasonable prices. It was great to see additional safety measures in place for the current COVID situation and these measures made us feel safe and reassured. Overall a fantastic place with high standards offering excellent value for money and really helpful attentive, friendly staff.

We were looking for a dog friendly hotel for a couple of nights stay and this hotel didn’t disappoint.
Our room (room 9) was spacious and decorated in a quirky boutique style with views out over the rooftops. Bathroom was nice with a great waterfall shower. We were given a box of goodies for the dog, including a water bowl, some treats and a blanket. We didn’t need a dog bed as we had taken our own.
Only criticism of the room (and reason why it’s not 5*) was that there were no bedside lamps in our room which meant stumbling around in the dark, and the safe wasn’t working.
There were lots of little complimentary items included which made for lovely surprises.
The service throughout was absolutely brilliant, all the staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble.
We had breakfast and dinner both days in the dog friendly snug area of the bar, which is really cosy, especially at night. The food was very good throughout.
Booking direct and taking advantage of their special promotions meant this was also great value. We will definitely be returning.

Charming hotel in the perfect location to have a little weekend away in Exeter. Within walking distance to The Quay, the shops and some excellent choices for food. We stayed for two nights, we are both vegan and sadly there is only one option for supper on the menu which neither of us fancied so we couldn't eat here but we had drinks in the bar on one evening, it was a lovely atmosphere and cosy by the fire even with the covid restrictions. The hotel had clear guidelines to keep everyone safe.
We had one of the smaller rooms as no others were available at the time of booking, it was absolutely fine for the two of us, nothing fancy but adequate if your just there to be out and about.
Breakfast the first day was fine, they adapted the vegetarian breakfast to suit us and the service was swift and pleasant, the same can not be said for the second morning, I'm not sure if they were just seriously understaffed but we along with most hotel guests were not at all happy with the thirty minute wait to get a cup of tea, we didn't get half the things we ordered, no drinks were brought, we had to go and get some water from the bar as we were given nothing! When you've paid over £20 each extra for breakfast you do expect more than a bottle of water you've had to get yourself so sadly although the rest of the stay was pleasant enough we have left feeling disappointed and pretty hungry for the two hour drive home!
On check out the waitress mentioned right at the end that she was sorry about breakfast and when we said we hadn't received anything we ordered she simply said she was sorry, not good customer service at all. We will no doubt stay again but hope that the level of customer service and attention has improved dramatically by then!

We stayed for one night here and had a lovely evening. We only travelled from North Devon, just for a night away from the kids and to do some shopping. Location wise, it's perfect for walking into Exeter City centre, and parking is easily accessible across the road.

On arrival, we were checked in by a friendly lady who was very welcoming.

We had dinner in the pub attached to the hotel, and the food & wine was fantastic. The service was great (there was a chap on his first shift, you wouldn't of guessed it, very professional and friendly). Lovely choice on the menu, loads of wines to browse and a chilled atmosphere. The food arrived quickly, was very tasty and well presented. Hats off to the chefs and kitchen.

The room was nice. We booked last minute and got the last room available. Would have been nice to have a double bed (had 2 singles joined), which we would ask for next time, but we aren't moaning as we booked late over Valentines. We would certainly book again, no doubt.

Thank you for a lovely night away.
