The Bath Hotel is a family run, quirky hotel overlooking the harbour in the picturesque village of Lynmouth, where Exmoor meets the sea. It has been in the same family since 1951. We are perfectly situated just minutes away from the South West Coast Path and the famous Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway. We have 20 comfortable and quintessentially eclectic en-suite rooms, the majority with sea views. With residents bar, onsite restaurant and award winning bar and restaurant, The Ancient Mariner which offers a wide selection of locally sourced food and drink in a gorgeous setting, we are the perfect base from which to explore all that Exmoor has to offer.

The Bath Hotel Lynmouth is often celebrated for its cleanliness and charming atmosphere, with guests particularly enamored by the quirky themed decor and warm ambience. While the rooms provide a distinct experience, some visitors have expressed concerns over stuffiness and maintenance. The hotel's central location is a hit among guests, offering scenic harbor views perfect for exploration.
Although the amenities are generally appreciated, including diverse food options and thoughtful touches, the value proposition is questioned due to high pricing and parking limitations. Service receives mixed reviews, with commendations for staff friendliness but critiques on the efficiency during busy times.

Detailed Reviews
We chose The Bath Hotel because of its location and we were not disappointed. It is in the heart of Lynmouth, a short walk from shops and the Lynton lift. It also has a few parking spaces which have to be booked, but are a great advantage when you are older!
The hotel has obviously thought closely about reducing the risk of Covid-19 infection; masks must be worn in public areas and no-one (not even staff) goes into your room once you have arrived. You can easily get more supplies of necessities but, if you want, strictly controlled arrangements can be made to service your room. It is interesting that you do not really need a daily service and our only “problem” was clearing the rubbish we generated. A sealed plastic bag left outside our room easily solved this.
All the staff we came across were very friendly and helpful. We had an allocated table in the restaurant which was ours for the duration of our stay. Having said that, we did have one day when a couple of fellow residents decided that they preferred our table for breakfast and were well ensconced by the time we came down. We were thus moved to their table but, being a greater number of people, this meant that the carefully measured safe distances were compromised.
The food was good and we were impressed that on all days bar one the breakfast tomato was very well cooked. These days most places seem to think that if they wave a piece of tomato under the grill for a few minutes it is cooked. It is one of the ways that we judge a hotel’s quality!!!
Our rooms were on the first floor and, being an older building, there is no lift. Having to wear a mask did initially cause us some difficulty with breathing but once we had got used to it and took things more slowly we had no issue.
Our rooms had recently been refurbished and were very good. My husband and I had opted for twin beds; a necessity when health conditions mean that one disturbs the other during the night if in the same bed. Unfortunately for us the beds were just over 2 feet wide which is much less than we are used to but this is no fault of the hotel. Other than that they were comfortable and we each had access to bedside tables at each side as well as between us.
All in all we would recommend The Bath Hotel.

Me and the wife decided to spend a week in Cornwall & Devon stopping off at different locations, first at Fistral beach hotel, then Watersmeet in Woolacombe then on to Lynton & Lynmouth.
Here we stayed at the Bath hotel.
This is a great quirky hotel, really well decorated, very clean and tidy.
Well situated in the centre of the Lynmouth which is idea.
There was a sea cider festival on while we were there, this was great, lots of different ciders to try, folk singers, sea shanties and an 80’s DJ in between. Everyone was very friendly and lapped up the atmosphere, this stopped at 2230 and moved inside to the pub next door.
The breakfast was lovely, well cooked and big. We had dinner as well in the hotel which again was very nice, well cooked and big.
All the staff were very helpful at all times, this seems to be a feature in that area, everyone in the shops and the water lift were incredibly friendly.
Lynton & Lynmouth is an amazing and beautiful place to visit and a must. The oldest water lift in the world is interesting with great views.
Lynton & Lynmouth are very steep, lots of hills and lots of walking.
By the amount of dogs down there it’s clearly a dog walkers delight.
The Bath hotel only has parking for about 4 or 5 rooms, the parking bays come with specific rooms, for the rest of us in the cheaper seats we had to park in the public car parks of which there are two, one at either end and the park about 500 cars and both are only a few minutes walk to the hotel. There is parking on the street but this is designed more for people passing through as you can only stay for 2 hours at a time with no return for 2 hours.
If you are thinking of visiting Lynton & Lynmouth and you should then definitely consider staying at The Bath Hotel, I thoroughly recommend it.

We stayed for 5 nights in the Quarterdeck suite. It is up 3 flights of stairs and there is no lift so be aware of that! The room was beautiful though, the comfiest bed and the kids were delighted with their bunks. There is a handy little kitchenette with a fridge, sink, kettle and microwave. My only criticism is that a light in this area would be useful. The bathroom is well laid out with lots of space for toiletries. The shower could go a bit hot then cold but was roomy and a decent power. There is a partial view of the harbour.
We ate dinner in the hotel restaurant on 3 nights. The menu is short but a nice choice all the same with plenty of vegan/vegetarian options and a decent wine list. Service at dinner was excellent. It was also such a joy to be able to relax and eat good food. Our daughter has special needs and anxiety and struggles to cope with lots of restaurants to the extent that we rarely get to enjoy our food as she is so anxious to leave. But she loved this restaurant so we even managed after dinner cocktails!! I will also add that someone had great taste in music there, wonderful to hear a bit of Leonard Cohen😍
Breakfast was included in our package. The first morning we waited 20 minutes for our order to be taken for food but they were busy. The cooked breakfast was very nice with lovely bacon. The kids were disappointed that the only cereal option was cornflakes. There are other options such as pastries, yoghurt or fruit salad. Breakfast is only available from 8 till 9.30 but you can get a voucher to go into the ancient mariner next door where breakfast is available till 11.
The village and hotel are very quiet and we slept like logs. Location is perfect being so central to the village.
All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. We had a couple of issues (no fault of the hotel) and they were quick to assist which was very good of them. Given that they were short staffed, the service we received was excellent. Would definitely recommend and would love to return with our dogs as we found Devon to be extremely dog friendly.

If you are looking to explore the area this is a great location with good views from the harbour facing rooms. We felt the hotel could have done more to reduce the risk associated with Covid. Approximately 50% of guests were not wearing face masks when walking around the narrow corridors of the hotel. The breakfasts were good but when the waiter forgets part of your order it takes a while before you can gain their attention as you are asked not to walk around the restaurant due to the current restrictions.

Hi there, We do ask guests to wear masks in communal areas, like corridors, but our very hardworking staff cannot be expected to police this at every moment, throughout the entire hotel, on top of everything else we are presently doing to protect our staff and customers from viral risk. We have increased cleaning of frequent touch points, we have also (as you pointed out) ensured that all guests are seated and receive table service for breakfast by staff members wearing masks, who also regularly wash their hands during breakfast service. We have all the tables suitably distanced, clean down everything at the end of service, including the menus, salt and pepper pots, tables and chairs (particularly the edges and arms of chairs) and make sure that cutlery is not put out on the tables until the morning required. We are sorry that you were missing some parts of your breakfast order, but glad this this was rectified for you, if not at our usual pace. Thank you for staying with us, and we hope that you will come back again. Kindest regards, Lucy

We have just completed a 3 day stay at The Bath Hotel. On our arrival we were greeted by a helpful and charming chap on reception. We were given clear directions to our room and offered help with luggage.
Wr had our dog with us and he appreciated the treats left for him in the room.
The room was OK with excellent views to the Bristol Channel, but was rather tired, the cam was not as clean as we would have expected and fimd we had to sanitise the room our selves. In normal circumstances we would probably not have worried, but there was a lot of dust about which was not good.
Small details and attention to detail have been missed, silly little things that could easily be put right with just a little more care. The bathroom window frame needed repainting or at least touching up. The frame had not been cleaned for many months. There were sticky marks on the tiles, where something has historically been stuck to the wall, thus could easily be removed. Light switched did not latch, carpets stained and sofa very old.
The room could quite easily be improved with just an hours attention.
Other little details which could easily be put right are regarding breakfast. Half a glass of watered orange juice was dissapointig, having to ask twice for toast annoying, otherwise good breakfast. The tables were cleaned well and chairs and condiments sanitised which was nice to see.
A good stay, would come back, but could so easily be better with a little more care.
If the owners want more details of how to improve I would happily tell them more. I just felt the owners had taken their eye of the ball.
Covid wise they were excellent.

We were meant to stay at this hotel for 4 nights, with our little dog. As it was our first holiday with the dog, we booked the austerity rooms, there are plenty of pictures of these rooms on their website, so both my partner and I knew exactly what we were booking, as long as the bed is comfortable, we really don’t care what the decor looks like.
On arrival my partner couldn’t find anyone on reception, he had to ring the bell about 4 times, go to the bar and back again just to get service.
We asked about parking and were told to come back again at 3/4pm for check-in. When we checked into our room, it looked exactly as we expected, however the smell that hit us was something else, both my partner and I turned and said ‘is that cigarette smoke?’ It absolutely stank, and I’m currently pregnant so this was no joke to us. We immediately opened both windows wide, and I went down to speak to reception. The lady was really understanding at first, she said she had another room just for the night and explained she’d get the other room thoroughly aired and cleaned again. She didn’t come up to the room to check for herself.
We were given a standard double, basically the same decor just maybe a bit more updated, but quite frankly the main thing was that it didn’t smell.
About 30/40 mins after we had complained I got a call from the receptionist, this time she gave me a completely different tone, she said that she’d gone to the room, with three other colleagues and that it didn’t smell at all, and the she proceeded to imply that the reason I complained is because I wanted a free upgrade from austerity! I was so shocked and taken aback. My partner went down to speak to her in person and we got the same rude tone, my partner asked if they could go to the room together to smell it but the receptionist wouldn’t, and when Tom reminded her that the double windows had been opened for a full 30 mins if not more she did seem to understand that that might help the smell!
At this point, she basically told us they had one more room available the following night, but after that they had no availability, leaving us without any accommodation for the last two nights (unless we wanted the smoke smelling room of course).
So we made peace with the situation, made plans to see family and accepted our holiday would finish on Saturday.
The next morning a lovely man called Dean was on reception, we explained the situation and he said he’d look into it, I got a call later and he said due to a cancellation they now had availability until Sunday, however by that point we were really done with this hotel and the way the lady treated us the previous day. We accepted a different austerity room for the Friday night, and called quits on our holiday early.
Thank you Dean for trying to salvage our holiday, but unfortunately the lady on reception had pretty much tainted our experience, which is why I am giving two stars, the lack of understanding and the ridiculous assumption that we were just trying to get an upgrade for free was just too much. Rude staff make such a huge difference to a holiday makers experience.

We stayed in the Observatory to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. It's a nice little room. Worth noting that this room is at the top of the hotel, so you get some amazing views across the estuary to the sea, but if you are less mobile there are not any lift options. The room was exceptionally clean, the only negative for my wife is that there is no dressing table to sit at. We ate breakfast each day which was very good, great ingredients and served quickly. We also ate in the restaurant one evening, they are currently serving a restricted menu due to covid which we already knew, when we arrived we were offered a table basically in the middle of the restaurant on garden wicker chairs, all round the edge were big comfortable chars which we requested and were given, seemed odd to us that we wouldn't be offered the comfortable first. We started with the monkfish tails which were superb, the mains were a departure from the starter. I had fish cakes with poached egg, which were not great. A bit mushy and the poached eggs were hard. My wife had the chicken burger without the bun, which looked like it had been deep fried to within an inch of it's life. Drinks were good, with a decent selection. And whilst the service was good the food was a bit of a let down in the evening anyway. We would stay at the hotel again and would be happy to have breakfast, we wouldn't eat an evening meal here again unless the menu changed.

Thank you for the review, glad you enjoyed your stay with us! The tables with the sofas seat four people and the wicker chairs are at the tables for two, if we seated two's at the tables for four we would be halving our capacity which has already been halved due to C19. So sorry the food wasn't up to scratch, we rarely get complaints about our food . Our head chef has been off work due to illness for nearly a week, putting strain on the remaining chefs where already working 14 hour days. Although this doesn't excuse the issue hopefully it goes some way to explaining. We hope to see you again in the future! Kind regards Carly

Stayed in a double lazarette room. Very small and dark with en suite bathroom bit damp drab and fusty smell . Room very hot and no fans available .
Unable to use main bar in hotel unless eating so consequently had to sit outside in rain . If we had known this we would not have booked . Food hit and miss and food always luke warm. Staff friendly but service slow. Lacked leadership with some staff wandering around aimlessly while others run off their feet.
Check in and out ran smoothly and was nice to have fresh milk and bottled water freely available in fridge. Nice touch. Afraid overall though won’t be returning

Sorry to hear you didn't like Lazerette. It is snug, the decor is mariner themed, like staying in cabin on a tall ship. Of obvious reasons we keep the limited tables we haves for people eating, the cocktail bar is for relaxing and drinking so no need to sit out in the rain! The season had been unprecedentedly busy but we are trying our best under very difficult circumstances. Kind regards

Arrived Friday late afternoon, to find nobody on Reception, with the keys in envelopes in an open reception area that was easily accessible from the street, seemed bizarre. Parking is only available for Suite Guests, in a very small car park, however, it does have a EV charging point
Stayed in the Braunton Suite (apparently the best room), however there were minimal facilities, a sofa, basic tea/coffee, no provision for drinks, etc. It did have great view across the lynmouth harbour area.
Headed to the Ancient Mariner, part of the Hotel, to find that the staff neither knew what they were doing or cared. Lot of on “on the job training” going on. Additionally , & somewhat unpleasant , was to experience “sticky tables” , not really expecting that .
The noise at night from the other rooms above our suite was something else we were not expecting either !
Breakfast is a strange experience, available 0800-0930 on a week day and weekends , no accommodating guests outside this for having a lie in etc. Food was great, but had to request a larger table , apparently people like smaller tables, stacked together, by the window whilst trying to balance plates in a small area, having an option would have been better ! More worryingly, our bill and others were left just folded on the named tables, which is a big no no , on data privacy !!
Tried to raise our concerns , folding a bill on an open table is deemed secure!. Post pandemic was blamed for the lack of ability to retain staff and service in the Hotel & bar, when you’re paying the rates charged that’s not a valid excuse .
The Bath Hotel could be spectacular, but failed on a number of levels for us.

In case you hadn’t noticed Hospitality has been hit very hard the last couple of years with staff shortages. The envelopes are placed out when we don’t have an evening receptionist available. There is a CCTV camera directly above here and staff in the Restaurant directly next to it. We are a family run hotel, so sorry we don’t have chain hotel type facilities in every room. There is however a large fridge right outside the door of the Braunton Suite offering fresh milk, water & baskets above with extra tea / coffee. ‘On the job training’ is the way it works in a business that operates 24/7. We don’t physically have the time & resource to simply whisk staff away to learn in a customer less environment. On the job training provides much more valuable experience for new starters. The D10 cleaning spray unfortunately does sometimes make tables feel slightly sticky. The tables are due to be sanded down and re varnished which does help prevent that so we can only apologise about that as its been super busy and we’ve not had the opportunity to give up the tables for maintenance to work on. In regards to noise from other rooms we have never had anyone mention this in that room before so I can’t really say much on that one however we will have a look into this. To call our breakfast experience strange seems a bit odd as it’s a traditional continental style breakfast with the option to order hot food from the menu too so how that can be a strange experience baffles me. Guests do have the option to go & eat in The Ancient Mariner for breakfast between 9.30am & 11am however this is not included in the room rate so they will be charged for this option. Tables are allocated depending on the number of people sitting at them. When the hotel is full we simply don’t have the room for every table of 2 to be sitting at a table that could accommodate 4. The bills on the tables is not a GDPR issue. They are folded in a way that there is no details showing. They are placed on the tables which clearly state the room names on them each day. This allows people to check over them before check out. Any bills that are not taken or if the room misses breakfast are taken to the office & shredded. I highly doubt anyone is going to steal someone elses bill and come and pay it for them (however lovely that would be!) 😊 Post pandemic & Brexit are huge contributors to hospitalities lack of staff but this is a nationwide issue not just here. Thanks for taking the time to leave your review

Just returned from a four night break staying in the poet twin room. Room was clean and had all you needed. It was compact but functional. The food was excellent we had a meal on the Friday evening and the roast on the Sunday. Several of the staff need a mention for the outstanding service and they are Angelica, Tom, Dean, Kiera. A big thank you to all of you. The hotel is in a good location. Only five rooms have parking so we used the main car park cost five pounds per day or thirteen pounds for four days and twenty for a week.

Not sure if there are rooms on the lower level. There are a few steps up to the bar and restaurants. Parking on the road for 2 hours.
Don't know, ask the hotel direct. We only ate their in the evenings which was excellent. Haven't seen the rooms. Enjoy your stay!
