Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Excellent location 7 minute walk to the theatre royal and restaurants. Superb swimming pool and also a second children’s pool which were both a good size. Warm showers and the changing rooms were very clean. We had a slightly more expensive room with a Whirlpool bath and that was great to wake up to. The breakfast was excellent from traditional English to continental. The staff were very friendly and professional and nothing was to much trouble. The hotel and the rooms were very clean. Already booked to return in April.

There is significant pressure to find the right location for a large function like a Ball, which tends to be the 'flagship' event of the year. It is an opportunity to raise much needed funds, but also to raise profile and leave gain longer term supporters. In order for any of this to happen, you need the right venue and an events team that are well organised, communicate well & also bring their experience & expertise to the planning stage. The team at the New Continental were outstanding, Ruby was our day to day contact in the lead up to the event and was a pleasure to deal with, super friendly, polite and nothing was too much trouble for her. Simon from the senior leadership team knows his stuff & them some! His advice on menu's - running times for food service, ballroom layout & his oversight of the food and beverage team on the night was outstanding. The team that were around when we set up and packed away were helpful, knowledgeable & very supportive. The ballroom looked stunning - it is beautiful anyway but it literally went up another level when decorated. The food was brilliant, despite over 200 covers, it was served hot, was well presented and tasted great, clearly a hugely experienced chef is at the helm. The event ran smoothly and even when 'last orders' were called just after 1am, the bar staff were good natured about any slightly tipsy revellers! The people that stayed over at the hotel were delighted with their rooms, the leisure facilities and super breakfast. I cant recommend this venue more highly... if you are planning a wedding, special occasion or any other function, they are the dream team!

We stayed the night here for a Christmas party. The meal was of a high standard and the disco was great for all us dancers. The room was spotless and very comfortable too. The breakfast was the perfect ending to the fantastic experience. The staff were hard working and friendly with nothing being too much trouble. We would definitely choose to stay here again.

Friendly staff from front desk to the food servers. Room was spacious and just what was needed after an evening of partying. Price included breakfast. All food was served hot. Reception staff are very helpful especially when the room key stopped working.

We had a Christmas party evening with a group of 16 people. Meal was fabulous. Food Hot and tasty. Staff were friendly and efficient. Party was great. Nice atmosphere. Room decorated lovely. 4 couples stayed at the hotel overnight. Our room was clean. Bed comfortable. The pillows were quite firm and I would have liked one to be a softer pillow (but I didn't ask for one). Breakfast was lovely. Hot, tasty full English, and continental and cereals also available. Plenty of tea, coffee and juice.

Avoid at all costs. I was working in the area and booked to stay here. I went to bed and woke up around 90 mins later feeling itchy- I was covered in bed bug bites and could see bed bugs crawling on the covers. I took some in a glass to reception. This indicated a very severe infestation, which clearly hadn’t been managed in a long time. I left the premises immediately and drove home in the middle of the night. The night staff told me this ‘had only happened a few times before’ so isn’t an isolated occurrence. I wrote to the hotel, sending photos of the bites across my neck, back, arms, legs and feet. I got no response for 48 hours. The bites on my feet were so severe that my feet swelled up to a point I was unable to get a shoe on. When the hotel manager did call me, he spent some time talking about their fumigation process but at no point even offered an apology until I asked for one. The room was booked by my work and he did not offer to refund the room- I had to go through a separate process via the central booking system to achieve this. I now have scars on my arm as a lasting mark of this horrible experience. My possessions are still in sealed bags in my shed awaiting confirmation from the hotel insurance company if they will contribute towards fumigation or replacement costs. This has been ongoing for a number of weeks now so I have no confidence they have any desire to resolve it. The hotel manage is no longer engaging with my emails, but instead has told me it is only for the insurance company to sort out. He hasn’t even got the decency to spell my name correctly in correspondence. Absolutely avoid this establishment at all costs. I understand hotels can get bed bugs, but the fact I could scoop the bugs in in a glass shows there were an awful lot of them in the room. Their response to this whole scenario has been terrible, with no care or concern for my welfare. There are plenty of good hotels in Plymouth- stay somewhere else.

Lovely large room, had an issue with the pillows being too hard for me, housekeeping gave me 2 softer ones within the hour. Large bed and bathroom couldn’t fault it. Very well positioned for the town and a short walk to the Barbican

Our visit revolved around a show at The Pavilions, but we decided to make a weekend of it and we’re really glad we did. The hotel and its people are lovely, clean & comfy room, super breakfast and we enjoyed meals in both the bistro and bar. Unlike some older hotels we’ve visited, the New Continental is nicely decorated, fresh and airy. Not at all tired! Great for a West Country break, we’ll come again soon.
