Stay from 17th -19th January for long weekend rooms nice large and very clean needs some little touch up. Breakfast was great large cold buffet everything need plus hot great as well plus if you order poached eggs you get them in about 5 min. Only down side if you won't a special coffee you will be charged ( flat white or latte ). Dinner for both functions we went was a 10 / 10 fresh light and very taste all round. Staff great and nothing is to much at special mention for breakfast manager / food and beverage manager and a special thank to James in the restaurant and evening service nothing was ever to much for him.

Thank you for taking the time to recognise the individual contribution of our key staff and managers over a very busy weekend. I was particularly delighted that the food was to your liking both at the organised dinners and breakfast. We look forward to being of service in the future. Having read previous reviews we entered the hotel with trepidation. Anthony and the reception team were very helpful and had great knowledge of the area. We were delighted to find that we had been allocated an upgraded room (301). It was a family room with a small balcony overlooking the sea. The bedroom And bathroom were clean, spascious and well equipped. It was nice to have Soft fluffy bath sheets.. There were hand sanitisers at a number of points and a one way system worked well. Because of Covid breakfast is no longer a buffet and you have to order it the night before. There was a good choice. We got everything that we ordered and were offered extras if we wanted them. Again the staff went out of their way to please. Yes it is dated and Some areas would benefit from a touch up but it has charm and the staff more than compensate for any decorating shortfall that we saw. We did not use the outside pool but the people using it seemed quite happy with it and the surrounding area. We had a drink in the bar and although I thought £9 for a Bloody Mary without even a bit of celery to garnish was expensive the service was good. When I saw the recent reviews I was concerned that I had wasted the £418 it had cost for 2nights B&B I am happy to say our experience was extremely good and that it was money well spent.

The hotel is in a great location and first impressions when you walk in are good, I was pleasantly surprised. The hotel garage for car parking needs a LOT of work as the roof has fallen down in places and it was very difficult to maneouver our car into an allocated space due to how many cars were tightly packed into a small space. It was however good knowing that we could park at any time as for a Friday night it was really busy on the nearby streets. The parking space needed to reserved in advance and at a cost of £10.
The room we booked was a 'small double' which was fine as we weren't going to be spending much time in the room. The bedroom furniture was dated but the bed was comfy. The worst part about our room was the constant noise from the room upstairs. You could hear everything and I mean everything! The floor boards were creaking with every footstep and you could hear their conversation amongst other things. The noise continued until 3 am. We couldn't hear the rooms either side. I would recommend a higher room.
The indoor pool and jacuzzi was nice especially when it was bad weather.
We went down to breakfast at 08:30 and there were lots of free tables. The breakfast was tasty and there was a good selection of hot and cold food. There was a function on the night before and by 09:00 there was a massive queue of people so I would advise on going down earlier if there has been a function on the night before.
All in all it was a pleasant stay but I would only stay again if I was on the top floor to avoid a noisy night again.

Thank you for this review and I was delighted that you enjoyed many aspects of your stay. I was though disappointed to read of the noise from the room above which caused you some disturbance. Our night staff have instructions to intervene when guests cause this level of noise during the night and would have been happy to confront the situation. Kind regards Andrew Huckerby General Manager

Every year we book into a hotel at the last minute for New Years Eve and this year we chose the Grand. On arrival there was a mix up with my room and the younger receptionist dealt with it very efficiently and we actually ended up getting a better room, but from there it went downhill. We sat in the Compass lounge and had a few drinks, we had cocktails which the staff were making with the aid of notes and they were very inconsistent, sometimes they tasted stronger than others and it was hit or miss whether we got the ‘trimmings’ (lemon, cherry etc). The staff were dealing with a constant flow of dirty glasses from the function room (why can’t you have a glass washer in the function room) so getting the staff’s attention was challenging, even with 3 young men stood in front of me they ignored me until a young lady intervened. Later in the evening we asked for the bar menu only to be told that we could only have crisps or nuts! I went out to reception and spoke to the older receptionist who informed me that the kitchen closed at 5 because of the NYE ball. I said that as I was a guest I thought this was appalling and had seen no mention of this when booking, she just shrugged her shoulders and was clearly not interested and so I asked her to go and find out if we could have sandwiches and went back to the bar, after a while a waiter came out to take our order! Result was some very nice sandwiches which we enjoyed. At midnight we went outside to watch fireworks across the bay and the staff came out as well which was fine but some were then smoking! Our breakfast was superb, couldn’t fault it and then it was spoilt because we couldn’t get served with bottled water in the bar! Completely ignored my grandson and then had to wait nearly 10 minutes for it to be brought over (bar was not busy). So my conclusions are that you are running a 4 star hotel but your staff are not properly trained for 4 star service, chatting amongst themselves behind the bar when customers are clearly waiting to be served, smoking on duty, their complete indifference, go and observe the staff at The Headland, The Imperial or any Brend hotel on your doorstep, I know that the Grand needs investment but if you haven’t got the staff you’re wasting your money!

I regret that you did not receive the level of service which you anticipated on New years Eve as a resident. Clearly our communications failed to inform you that there was no dinner service for residents not attending the Gala Dinner and for this I can but apologise. The staff working at midnight were invited by me to have a 10-minute break to welcome in the New Year. During this period the bars were closed. I was unaware of the staff smoking and will pay particular attention next New Year. All feedback is passed on to the teams responsible and there are always lessons to be learned. We will continue to develop our staff and operations as we progress through the year. Andrew Huckerby General Manager

My experience at The Grand Hotel last weekend was nothing short of perfection. Celebrating a very significant occasion, my closest friends flew into town and I decided to show them the true substance of Torbay’s splendour. We had a beautiful champagne high tea on the terrace where the service was simply exquisite. I had been inquiring about this during the week and a lady called Kenya , organised the afternoon for us. She recommended the facilities available to us as well as a concise description of the room and rates. Once we arrived for our high tea , Tracy was our server and nothing was too much trouble. Polite , well groomed and professional- she explained the variations of the menu to us and served the most delicious, chilled fizz , complete with wine cooler. The chap who brought our high tea was extremely professional ( I do believe his name was Felix ) - despite the Covid restrictions , he still managed to deliver the lunch perfectly and made the occasion so special. It became cloudy so Tracy gave us the option to move inside , where she had reserved us a beautiful table in the brasserie , overlooking the ocean. Impeccable service !
My friends and I had booked a room for the evening and the reception staff were courteous, charming and helpful. Gabby was a fountain of knowledge and helped us decide where to head out that evening.
The room was beautiful! Elegant , immaculate, charming and had a wonderful period ambience to it. The beds were so comfortable that we decided to skip breakfast ( which I’ve heard is absolutely wonderful) and enjoy the luxury of the huge bed and the views for the whole morning.
The hotel itself is an absolute gem. The staff , decor , service , atmosphere and facilities are all absolutely fabulous and considering there are so many restrictions due to covid , the staff manage this gracefully and make their guests feel so welcomed.
I shall definitely be making more local visits ( the Sunday roast is divine ! ) and will not hesitate to book an overnight stay for future , special occasions.
Thank you to everyone at The Grand for making the occasion so , so special x

Great 3 rd time stay. We found all staff to be pleasant, helpful and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff.
My room wasn’t ready by the guaranteed 3pm, however the staff were very apologetic and gave me two vouchers for complimentary mini cream teas, this was very thoughtful and appreciated, thank you, the cream tea was scrumpy 😋..
Lovely breakfasts, lots to choose from and the evening meal we had was gorgeous too.
We appreciated a complimentary sea view room upgrade and reception were able to fulfil our request of adjoining rooms as my elderly mum in law has reduced mobility and dementia .
I cannot praise the staff enough, we will definitely be back later in the year, for longer this time I hope, as it feels like home from home.
We didn’t have time to use the spa facilities on this stay so not able to comment on this occasion.
We had no problems parking across the road in the station or on the road and used the windscreen ticket when required.
My only gripe was our bedroom was stifling hot ( room 106), the bathroom radiator was scorching hot 24/7, however once we had mentioned it, the maintenance team were up to turn it off for us. We then had to just use the fan and leave the bedroom window open.
We bought some of the hotels homemade jam to bring home and only paid £2 for a huge loaf of the homemade seeded bread, which was to die for 😋 and great value, these little touches make our holidays thank you.
We will return soon 👏🏻

This was our first visit to Torquay and we chose the Grand Hotel to celebrate a special bday.

On balance we had a great weekend and were blessed with amazing weather throughout our stay which made a huge difference. We booked a sea facing family room and the views were fantastic. The room was clean albeit we were not told that we would have to 'book' housekeeping so we ended up coming back to dirty towels and unmade beds after our first night and upon calling reception, no one was available to service the room until after we were due to leave.

Sadly the hotel has seen better days and needs some serious investment to bring it up to the standard expected of a 4 star costing the £220 per night we paid. Some communal areas were ok but the side corridors had wall paper peeling off the walls, water stains on the ceiling and very dated fixtures & fittings. The promotional photographs must have been taken decades ago as the exterior desperately needed painting and essential maintenance.

Whilst the outdoor pool was warm, a good jet wash and a lick of paint wouldn't have gone amiss.

Service in the bar areas was very slow and whilst all the young staff were doing their best, there was a distinct lack of organisation and management.

It's a shame as the location, views and bones of the building have the potential to be akin to something you could find in St Tropez or Cannes. Unfortunately however, it is shabby, tatty, disorganised and over-priced and sadly we will choose a different hotel when we visit again.

The room was clean but the shower was a joke , as in photo I’m 5 ft 10 and 13 stone and it was a real struggle to enter the shower and wash .
it’s the tiniest shower I have ever witnessed.
Very uncomfortable bed , bad nights sleep. Pillows are a bag of air.
Outdated furniture, not what you expect at £300 a night .

The pool outside - not a nice place to sit , the sun beds are absolutely disgusting and would be better suited at the local tip.
There was rubbish that did not get cleaned up and the whole area needs a clean and a white wash . Why over the shut down was some very basic maintenance not done ?? Such a shame beating in mind the location .

The indoor pool - as above , unloved and outdated , the changing rooms are not nice at all .

The restaurant- I excuse the staff as I understand the industry is struggling with staff but this should reflect the price .
The food is average and the staff don’t understand the basic menu especially in the brassiere.

It made me laugh at times and if basil faulty had appeared it would have explained a lot .

I have sent a similar review to the hotel and have received no response part from the generic 10% discount email on a return trip .

Well that certainly would not happen ! I would’ve had a far more pleasurable experience from staying at the premier inn on the seafront to Torquay for a fraction of the cost.

I would assume that the location and the name would have given me and my wife a pleasurable night away from the kids but that was far from what we got. The biggest thing for us was to be able to sit outside by the pool In the Sun and enjoy a few drinks but once you start looking around you cannot help noticing the decay and general dirtiness and complete lack of attention from this hotel chain.
The staff are obviously young inexperienced and probably not very well trained and as I said this is excused as they were all very well mannered.

My best advice to this hotel would be to close the indoor and outdoor pool areas immediately to avoid damning review such as this one. Quite clearly the emphasis of this hotel is still on functions and the bar area . However if you are going to stay at this hotel overnight you expect to be able to use the Facilities and enjoy them.

Picture no 2 Is of a pint of orange that I watched for 24 hours by the pool and never moved as well as various other items of rubbish, picture three is the loneliest dirtiest looking chair which I’m sure no one would want to go and sit in.

This is a wonderful old and grand hotel. If you are looking for modern highend slick immaculate interior, you may be disappointed however if you are looking for a really warm welcome, a comfortable stay and a heap of history with a feeling of grand calm throught out the hotel, get booking.
We have just returned from a 3 night trip and were kindly upgraded by the lovely Jess for a sea view family room ( 302) for a great value deal. We had a fantastic view of the sea in a large room with complimentary coffee, tea biscuits etc and a daily housekeeping service.
We had a top class breakfast each day and were looked after very well by the friendly Milie , nothing was too much trouble and service was mostly quick.
Thank you to the friendly and professional reception staff, Camile and Kevin and collegues who made our stay enjoyable and we will most definately return as soon as the government let us travel again.

At first it looks like a great hotel. But once you start walking around the hotel it soon goes down hill. The the carpets are old and have holes, The wallpaper is coming off the walls and the floor boards creak that bad that when your in bed it wakes you up when people walk past your room.

The rooms it self arnt great! the showers have no power and only have two settings really hot or really cold. The wardrobe had chunks missing out of it the bed kept moving threw the night. The overall atmosphere once you leave the reception is depressing and looks more like a hostel.

The food is average! We had room service one night and the pizza was doughy and raw. The system for breakfast is backwards! I've never been to a hotel where you had to wait 10 minutes to sit down in a empty restraunt to eat!

I dont believe this is a 4* hotel and for the price we paid to what we got wasnt worth it.
