Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Had an excellent 3 night stay fantastic location rooms were clean and tidy plenty of parking and a wonderful host nothing was too much trouble and very knowledgeable of the area and things to do.
Great buffet breakfast to start the day and a short walk from the centre of torquay.
Would definitely book here again.

We had an overnight stay at the hotel as we was visiting family in the area. My mother had the ground floor with her two little dogs and the room was large and clean. We was upgraded to a see view but the room was a little dated. I do think they are trying to update the rooms and wish them the very best as it’s situated close to the beach and town. The manager is lovely and TBH the only person we have seen working and he really does work hard. Hats off to him.

Nice and clean room. Friendly and warm welcome. Great breakfast and excellent service. Only short walk to town, extra parking around a corner if needed and lovely bakery across street...what more could you wish for? Will go back again.

I visited this hotel for New Year celebrations and was very disappointed. The hotel did nothing for New Year except provide s few sandwiches and cakes at just gone midnight. One of the ladies that had organised a trip provided us with party poppers. The only good thing about the evening was the efforts put in by the singer who had most of us up on the dance floor.
The dining room and lounges were very cold with no visible radiator in the lounge.
The bedrooms left a lot to be desired. The heater in my bathroom wasn’t working and the lid of the toilet was propped up by the side of the toilet. The shower cubicle was very mouldy and the shower mat was disgusting. The carpet was dirty and the bed looked as if it hadn’t been made for the whole of our stay.
The Manager Henry was very rude when I asked him if there was entertainment on New Year’s Eve and didn’t let me finish asking if it was on until midnight as it had finished at 10.30 the previous night. He spent most of his time leaning on the bar using his phone.
The waiting staff were very friendly and helpful.

Not sure where to begin with this review, I hate writing bad reviews but feel I have too so others don't get ripped off .
First off I would like to say the manager who greeted us was very friendly.
After that it goes down hill some what . We were allegedly given an upgraded room , well if this was the upgraded room how bad were the normal rooms ?
At best it looked like a youth hostel or student accommodation, decor from the 70s with tatty old pine furniture.
We actually threw better furniture away recently.
Bedding was clean but just a regular double bed that felt like sleeping on a trampoline.
Round the edges of the room it was dirty .
TV didn't work .
Bathroom slightly more modern but grotty , mold on tiles and grim around skirting boards.
Initially my other half wanted to leave .
But we were meeting a friend we hadn't seen for 4 years and decided to stick it out.
To be fair it was pretty quiet during the night despite its location.

Breakfast was served buffet style and we arrived at 8.30 to be greeted with half a slice of fried bread, mushroom and beans .No eggs bacon or sausages .
Maybe more were on the way but we walked out and promptly left the hotel and found breakfast elsewhere.
You could be forgiven for thinking the hotel was cheap and had that been the case we could have seen past the tatty outdated rooms .
But for this unforgettable experience we paid £117 , yes you read it correctly £117 .
This day and age the offering is simply not acceptable and definitely not at that price point .
Safe to say we won't be returning.

Room freezing radiator not working correctly. Mould in the bedroom. Mould in the bathroom. Toilet seat broken. Carpets not cleaned in bedroom. Rust under towel rail in bathroom. One light in bedroom not working. Nothing to dry hands on in the ladies toilet in the main building. Holes in upholstery on chairs in main Lounge. Hotel cold throughout and in needs of a great deal of TLC.
Only positive breakfast very nice

In september 2014 we have stayed in the Marquis Hotel for 5 nights . The booking was made almost a year in advance! The manager told us that there would be a lift but one of our group had to climb the stairs to the third floor! THE LIFT WAS NOT IN USE ANYMORE!!!. Not one of the rooms looked like the photo's on the website and most of the rooms were very tiny. The traffic caused a lot of noise in some rooms. The towels were not even changed if you put them on the floor! Guests in at least 4 rooms never had hot water in the showers. O yes, the manager promised to look after it and called a plumber (...) and he promised a lot more... Nothing ever happened, but he kept smiling. A very good actor. Sometimes the food during dinner was not sufficient for the group. They ordered salmon but there was only salmon for half of our party. I will definitely not recommend this hotel and if you want to stay there anyhow: Never accept the rooms 211, 110, 202 and rooms on the third floor. Have a look and try the hot water of the shower before you move in.

Same towels for whole week, small rooms, signs with LIFT but no lift available, noise from busy road.... Why should I return? Where are the rooms situated that are shown on website? Cold food during breakfast and diner. Did the guests who wrote the reviews stay in the same hotel?

Response from thomas m, General Manager at Marquis Hotel
Responded 27 Oct 2014
Dear padraighe Thank you for taking the time to post your first review on tripadvisor. As hotel policy we always chance towels upon request when placed in the bath. I really would love for this review to come to facts and not just a review to damage a business. As previous emails will show our standards of late have been extremely high. Please contact myself directly to discuss this matter in more depth. Best wishes T.Monnington

The hotel looked amazing when we looked at the photos on line but the truth is it was nothing like the photos. It was clean, yes and the room was very nice (nothing like the photos, and nowhere to put your towels in the bathroom). The staff were lovely, very friendly and would find time to chat. The entertainment was good, not great but passable. Then comes the food. Oh dear. It was terrible. A real letdown. The first evening we had 1 FROZEN Yorkshire pudding with 2 Frozen roast potatoes (the only time we had potatoes actually all week, only chips or salad) and what looked like frozen broccoli and meat from a tin. Cold (stone cold)apple pie and custard for dessert. And the diabolical food went on all week. When we had fish NO-ONE ate it. I also had a stone cold chicken breast which at least 3 of us left uneaten. A salad consisted of a bit of shredded lettuce 2 pieces of cucumber tomato and peppers. No egg no beetroot no coleslaw and it wasnt presented very nice anyway. I also had to ask for a fresh roll because mine was dry. So was the 2nd one. The coffee was good. But when I opened the chocolate that came with it. It was changing colour. It was off. I couldn,t believe it. The hotel had a separate bistro with totally different meals and I dont know what they're like. But if its the same chef I would sack him. It's a real shame about the food because otherwise whether the photos are different or not it would otherwise be a lovely hotel. But I won't be going again. (Oh and you have to use the same towels for your showers and washes all week)
