This has been our second stay at the Somerville and it was as magical as our first last year. We stay in Room 1, The Meadfoot Suite and it is a beautiful and stunning room. My partner loves the tv which comes out of the base of the bed Whereas my favourite feature is the gigantic cuddle chair which is more like a sofa.
Peter and Helen are amazing hosts. With many years experience in the hospitality industry it is clear to see. Helen is an amazing chef and I have personally tried every item on the breakfast menu and all are beautifully cooked and presented. Helen also makes fresh cake each day for all of the guests and provides fresh milk daily too. The rooms are serviced every day so you always come back after your day trips to a fresh bed and room.
There is a private car park which provides sufficient parking for all rooms so there is none of the panic to find a space in the road in peak season. The town is walking distance away but being on a steep hill (as most roads are in Torquay) we tend to drive. But they are happy for you to leave your car in the Somerville car park if you don’t mind walking.
If you are looking for a lovely stay, great rooms and a fantastic breakfast with great hosts then the Somerville is the place for you!

What a gorgeous B&B! We stayed for 2 nights and found it hard to pull ourselves away from this place to go and explore Torquay. Beautifully decorated, extremely comfortable and most importantly, the hosts, Pete and Helen, were so welcoming and friendly that it really made the difference. We stayed in an elegant bedroom which was decorated red and gold - it felt very romantic and the bathroom, which has been recently updated, was clean and fresh. (I appreciated the Ted Baker tiles 😊). Breakfast will not disappoint! It was absolutely delicious with such a variety to choose from you can't go wrong. All in all, the experience was fantastic and as my first time staying in a B&B, this has made me want to do it again, though I'm unsure whether any other B&B will live up to The Somerville. Thanks Pete & Helen!

Another trip to the wonderful Torbay area and a stay in our favourite hotel. Just up the hill from the Torquay Marina and even more welcoming than before following their lockdown period . Peter and Helen go way above and beyond to make guests welcome and their standards of cleanliness and attention to detail post Covid-19 make you feel very safe. Information on eating out in Torquay is always available and with local knowledge like that it is a pleasure to dine on local produce and in very welcoming surroundings

We spent a couple of nights during May and as per usual found the service and accommodation at The Somerville to be first class. We received a very warm welcome from Helen when we arrived and was offered some homemade cake which was delicious. Our room had all the amenities you would need, from high quality complimentary toiletries to a good clothes brush (very useful after a walking the South Coast path in unusually inclement weather). The high quality of the food at breakfast is only matched by the variety of choice. Peter is always on hand to make sure you have everything you need and is happy to provide information on local events. The location is just a few minutes walk from from the town/Marina which has a variety of good restaurants. This was our second visit and we will definitely be returning.

Lovely Bijou guest house with charming hosts, particularly Peter, who went to the nth degree to make sure his guests were comfortable and happy
Room was delightful fashioned in an Art Nouveau style with a lovely bed and bathroom, all cleaned to a high standard
Lovely breakfast menu, was extensive, making it difficult to make a decision
The walk down the hill to the Marina took us ten minutes, walking quite slowly, where numerous restaurants and cafes were found for our evening meal.
Peter recommended No.7 fish bistro, which proved to be fantastic serving locally caught fish...amazing food and service

If there was a negative I'd have to say the televisions need updating, perhaps an Amazon Fire Stick would give more selection of programs, especially in the winter months when you return to your room earlier.

The Somerville was recommended to us by relatives and we were lucky enough to get a reservation with a short lead in time. I say lucky because the Guest House was at full capacity for the three nights we stayed.

These days it is important to discuss Covid and to say whether or not the measures taken by the guest house made us feel as safe as we could be. The answer is a resounding yes. The precautionary measures in place are extensive, and the guest house provides an explanatory letter on what they have done and what you can do to gain most benefit from them. Bottom line, we felt safe throughout our visit.

On to the rooms and service. We were in a suite that was spacious and comfortable. It was well equipped with things like a stand alone bath (and sufficient hot water available to make best use of it.) We slept well in the comfortable bed and could relax in the lounge furniture provided in the other half of the suite.

The owners offered every assistance, including a good list of restaurants that they would also book on your behalf if requested. We asked them to do this for us on our first night and we were quickly informed that our first choice was not available. So we chose again and our booking was confirmed.

Breakfast can only be described as excellent. Covid precautions mean that the buffet is no longer an option, but Peter and Helen have overcome this by offering a wide selection of breakfast starters. The main breakfast plate was really good - and I mean really good. I had the full English and my wife was more selective in her choice. Both breakfasts could not have been better.

Breakfast times were staggered - another Covid precaution to help with social distancing. Practically it worked because guests arrived at their table at different times and avoided close contact with other guests.

The Somerville lives up to expectations and to us is fully deserving of its 5-star rating from the English Tourist Board.

From the moment we arrived at The Somerville we were made to feel welcome. Peter, and his wife Helen, are absolutely outstanding hosts. Nothing was too much trouble. The Somerville is boutique style, beautiful and very tastefully done. Everywhere is spotlessly clean. Rooms are well thought out, chic and have everything needed for a relaxing, comfortable stay. Bathrooms are modern, excellent shower, lovely fluffy towels and robes. Breakfast is a wow.....so much to choose from and tastes fabulous(especially Helens homemade granola!). Obviously, due to Covid19 there has had to be some changes but they were spot on with lots of hand sanitizer everywhere, and disinfecting regularly and from what we could see, going above and beyond guidelines to keep everyone safe. Peters knowledge of the area was fantastic and ensured we had great days out. These people are friendly, helpful, polite and knowledgeable whilst being totally professional. A fantastic all round stay and we will be going back next year. Well deserving of their five star rating. Massive thanks to Peter and Helen (and a pay on the back for Coco!)

My wife and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary in Torquay and surrounding areas. The hotel has a great location which made walking around Torquay easy including the ferry to Brixham.

The hotel is very well presented; the hosts have clearly put a great deal of time, effort and planning into the presentation and layout.

We stayed in room 11 which is the Garden Suite and enjoyed peace and quiet and direct access onto the garden terrace. The bed was comfy, the water hot and the fridge cold! Everything about our stay was good, the whole place was spotlessly clean.

An added bonus though was the friendliness of the owners and their staff, they put the cherry on the cake.

I would, without hesitation recommend The Somerville to friends and family.

My wife and I had a short stay here, just wished it had been longer. The Somerville owned by Peter and Helen were excellent very experienced host and nothing was too much trouble, The Somerville is located a short walk from the harbour so ideally located to the heart of Torquay. All rooms decorated to a very very high standard, Each with their own personality, are very clean, roomy and extremely comfortable. The best rooms I have stayed in for a long time including hotels in London. The breakfast room is very light and airy and presents a relaxing start to the day. The breakfast menu is plentiful and should (will) cater for all needs, if you want a hearty breakfast go for The Full Monty. Peter and Helen are perhaps the best host we have ever had at a B & B very welcoming and friendly, Whilst I did not try it Helen bakes a cake every day and is left out for guest to help themselves to perhaps with a nice cup of tea in your room. Our room was located to the rear and was nice and quiet for a good nights sleep. Tea, coffee etc facilities are in each room, we also had a fridge for the daily fresh milk. Our room had 3 TV's (yes one in the bathroom for a long soak watching Coronation Street)!! one tv could be seen from the bed and a further tv in side area with a settee for a comfortable sit down with a cup of tea and biscuit. Our room also had hair drier iron and ironing board all tucked away in a cupboard with the fridge. On the ground floor the is a nice lounge area and (If Peter or Helen are not around) a help yourself bar with a honesty sheet to record what you have had to drink. We did not use this HONESTLY!!!!!. The was the best short beak we have had and it was all down to Peter, Helen and all the Staff at The Somerville. Thank you so much

This was our fourth time staying at The Somerville. Peter & Helen are superb hosts, so friendly & welcoming.
Rooms are finished to the highest standards with fresh milk & bottled water replenished daily. High end Bathroom products & even a bottle of sunscreen was provided.
Breakfast each day was exceptional with a choice of items from the Buffet plus many cooked options from the menu where you can mix & match to suit your requirements. Helen’s homemade afternoon cakes (Millionaires Shortbread was our favourite) were a treat we looked forward to after a long day out & about.
Another thoroughly enjoyable visit to The Somerville. Definitely worthy of 5*
Thank you Peter & Helen
