We actually booked this break away just before the Covid-19 crisis started. We were hesitant about whether to cancel or not but decided to go as we were going with my Mother in law and her sister, they had their hearts set on going because they are not going to be able to go out for sometime.
On arrival we were greeted by a very smiley and happy young man, very polite and friendly. There was a gorgeous bunch of flowers and the reception area was very clean and welcoming.
We were told that due to the amount of people that had cancelled that we were upgraded. Myself and my husband, had a deluxe room with a sea view. Beautiful room, great views. The bathroom was small and the shower leaked quite a lot but it was adequate for our needs. The whole place was spotlessly clean, beautiful room with everything that you would need.

Our deal included afternoon tea on arrival,
breakfast each day and 5 course dinner each evening. We arrived Friday afternoon and left Sunday afternoon after Sunday lunch (also included). The whole stay was £115 per person. Fantastic deal.

The food was exceptional, very well presented, tasty and portion size was perfect. Special thanks to Kev and Jamie (chefs). If we wanted to slightly change our meals there was never a problem. The waiting staff-Alison and Rachel- were lovely, they were discreet and yet attentive (a difficult balance to strike). Always friendly and helpful.
The owner/manager should be very proud of his staff and hotel. Even with their probable worry about their jobs they kept on smiling and were very professional. The hotel is beautiful.

We also saw the cleaners, always cleaning throughout the day, the whole hotel was spotless.

We will hopefully return soon when things are back to normal.

I've been to a few smaller hotels over the years but this is by far the best! Good price to start with. The rooms are all unique and even though we had cosy doubles, they looked and felt recently refurbished and had plenty of space.
The restaurant serves great quality food and personalised to each individual. I loved that you keep the same table for your entire stay.
The bar serves any drink you could ever ask for and all reasonably priced.
The only issue we had was the room bill at the end of the stay was wrong as they had added to many meals to it however they were more than happy to rectify the issue and we paid the correct amount.
All the team were absolutely lovely and the most caring staff I have ever met.
They offer discounts to those who return which is great.
The location is close to a small beach away from the centre of Torquay but close to all areas we wanted to visit so perfect. It was away from the hustle and bustle but not too far.
You can use the spa and gym in the hotel opposite for a small fee.
Would I stay again? 100% yes!

On first impression the owner ? (middle aged man) seemed quite frosty, and when asked for a snack he made us feel as though it was too much trouble.....but I assume it was just his proffesional manner.
The staff serving the included 5 course meals/breakfast were very friendly and attentive, the whole feel in the lounge and gardens is a very relaxing experience, and the food is very good, and varied.
We visited over the may bank holiday and managed to get the last available room, and although it was small it had everything you need, and I was very impressed that they serviced the room daily and gave plenty on the tea tray.
Having been to Torquay over 20 times and usually stay in the bay area, this is going to be my choice of area from now on, its only 15 mins to the marina, through a lovely area with beautiful villas to look at....and so peaceful.
Yes it is a steep walk back to the Hotel, but its Torquay, there are hills in most direction.
Overall, this hotel is worth the rate for the DDB option, as you cannot get a better selection especially for breakfast.
Its also a 2 minute walk from the rocky Meadfoot beach, where we sat and watched 5 cruise ships in the bay.

My wife and I stayed here for four nights on BB&EM basics.
We booked a cosy double room which was good enough for the two of us, the room overlooked the car park and reception area.
Room was clean although the wardrobe could do with some maintenance on the drawers.
The toilet and shower was in a cupboard about the size of a wardrobe and once the temperature of shower was obtained it worked well.
Dinner is served between 1845 and 2030 and breakfast from 0800 to 0930.
You have your allocated table which you keep for your stay.
Service was sometimes slow but the staff were working non stop and are friendly.
Car parking can be an issue but there is parking on the road outside.
The gardens are well maintained with plenty of seating.
Bus stops outside the hotel and operates Monday to Saturday from 0945 until 1645.
Hotel is up a steep hill from Torquay harbour.

We had a lovely 4 night break at 'The Balmoral'. Kind polite welcome and our room was ready on arrival, it was a 'cosy double', although small it was well furnished by good quality matching wardrobe, 4 drawer unit and bedside cupboards, a very comfortable bed, tea and coffee including a teapot, unit, lovely view across the lawned and well maintained garden. Public sitting areas with very comfortable sofas and chairs bar area with seating areas. The dining room was in period and table settings were very carefully laid out and not an item of cutlery out of place and laid out in the proper manner. The dining room staff all had a good sense of humour and had time to talk to the guests and I believe many guests were returning ones. It is a quieter style hotel and all the better for it in my opinion. Wine with dinner was at a very reasonable price. We stayed half board and found breakfast offerings very good and evenings meals had a full menu change each day and the choice was good and the food cooked and presented perfectly as any too quality restaurant would. Beautiful garden and well maintained lawns, with seating and relaxing sun chairs also. Although in a slightly hilly walk to Torquay centre (about 20 munutes' there is a bus stop right outside the hotel. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would stay there again and would recommend it without reservation.

David.

This was our first visit to the Balmoral and "what a find"
from the moment we went into the Hotel we were met by "first class" staff nothing was too much trouble.
The room was very good with all you could wish for from your hotel room and always cleaned very well.
The Dinning Room also gave you very good service and "Outstanding Food" every meal was of a "5 star" standard.
While there we met other people that were staying in the Hotel and everyone was of the same opinion this is a FIRST CLASS Hotel.
We can't wait to return in September this time for a longer stay.

I never feel comfortable giving reviews especially when I have just returned and have had such a nice time but without this critique, I feel that this hotel would be completely unaware of what it’s guests were saying and could miss out on future bookings if not prepared to make some simple changes .
I will start with the good points , of which there are many . The hotel is comfortable and cosy The grounds are very well kept with plenty of loungers and tables, it is in a lovely position close to Meadfoot beach. The breakfast is good and every evening meal that we had was of an excellent standard with a varied choice. The waitresses are friendly and efficient although the dining room lacks atmosphere and was never more than half full in the evenings even with the hotel at full capacity .
The bar was well stocked but be prepared to ring the bell and wait for service every time you have an empty glass. Not once,in the bar or lounge area ,did anyone come to offer us drinks or came to collect our empty glasses and bottles, I was not prepared to return them myself even though our table was often rather full !
We treated ourselves to the “ best room “on offer , which was number 5 and it is large enough with a bay window , lots of light and a large bed . There is no fridge and the tea/ coffee making facilities are low quality with a packet of 2 biscuits per day to share, There is no drinking water in the room although they are happy to give you a carafe if you remember to ask before you go to bed otherwise the bar shuts at 11 pm promptly . The room was clean on the service but needed a deep clean in the bits that didn’t show, which became more apparent as the week went on. There is no entertainment in the summer months and you are no longer allowed to use the pool and spa facilities for a small fee in its sister hotel opposite,
I would have to agree with a previous review in which it was mentioned that no one took ownership. In the entire week that we were there, the only staff that we met were the three ladies that served us breakfast, dinner and served drinks at the bar. They greeted us when we arrived in reception and prepared our bill and took payment when we left . We were served once by a gentleman but we never saw him again. It is very uncomfortable to complain or even ask for things when the serving staff are obviously doing their best to cover all duties in this 28 room hotel . They did a great job but it is just not professional enough for the price that we paid for our room , food and drinks ,I have never been to a hotel of that size with no one visible on reception and no manager to oversee its smooth running . It is a shame that our very basic needs were not met in this rather lovely hotel but I hope that they will take some notes and hopefully make some improvements,

We booked the Hotel Balmoral on a premium double Breakfast and 5 star Cuisine break for four nights.
When we arrived at Hotel reception we booked in but were not shown to our room.
This was repeated all through the visit, the staff were not friendly at all.
First impressions were favourable, it looked nice, and our room looked okay. However when we went to bed we found ourselves lying on a cheap worn out mattress that you felt every spring, sleep was impossible. You could also hear every sound from the room above, plumbing noise was terribe. The bathroom had no towel rail or toilet roll holder and there was a smell from the bathroom either from drains or dustbins which were just underneath the bathroom window. It was also not clean in the corners.
Food was just average, not like pictures on their website. The waitress service in the evening was extremely slow. Altogether not as expected for the price. Have been in other hotels cheaper and more friendly and with better service.

We have just returned home after staying at this superb hotel sept 26th to oct 1st. My comments are as follows:
Spotlessly clean everywhere.
Our room (18) was very roomy and thogh there was no view apart from a wall we were only in it to sleep so so what?? The ensuite had a nice bath, the water was always piping hot. The staff member cleaned the room very well and the bed was firm and we slept reasonably well.
The food in the dining room was wonderful at breakfast and dinner. The menu changed every day and it was well cooked and extremely tasty.
There is a very nice garden and terrace though we did not use it as out every day sight seeing.
The staff are very helpful and friendly and the service is quick and cheerful.
Car parking is a bit limited but there is parking just outside the antrance
So would we go again? Most certainly and we reccommend this hotel without reservation.

Stayed here for three nights on bed and breakfast basis. The five course evening meal menu looks lovely but we wanted to explore Torquay and eat out. On Friday and Saturday nights they have entertainment in the lounge so we made sure we got back for this. Breakfast staff were very attentive and food piping hot and freshly cooked. We had a cosy double room looking out over towards Meadfoot beach. Nice fresh and clean room with lovely little bathroom. Courtesy toiletries and shower cap provided. Can’t praise this delightful small hotel enough. Everything was perfect. It’s a couple minutes walk to Meadfoot beach or about 10 minutes into town. We found it easy to get a taxi back if we needed to. There are plenty taxi ranks in town centre.
