Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Just had a fabulous weekend at The Torcroft, Gary and Phillip could not have been more welcoming. The house is fantastic as is the decor, all tastefully furnished. Our room was very comfortable, super cosy bed complete with fluffy towels, coffee etc, all that you would possibly need. We felt completely at home and enjoyed our chats with Gary and Phillip. Will definitely visit in the summer so that we can sit in their lovely garden.

Gary & Phil and 2 of the nicest owners of hotels that we have known. Nothing is too much trouble for them and they are very hands on in running the hotel. The only criticism that we have s the heating arrangements. The thermostat for the central heating is downstairs in the hall, and this controls the radiators in the bedrooms. Therefore, although the hall might be warm enough to turn off the boiler, we found that the bedroom was just that little too cold on some occasions. Apart from that, the bed was really comfortable and the breakfast individually cooked to order. Improve the heating and you'll get 5*

HI Bob = many thanks for taking the time to leave a review and appreciate all the positive feedback, thank you. Regarding your comments about the heating I totally understand your comments but would add like most houses, which we are, our thermostat is central which is harder to regulate in a large house with 11 bedrooms, all of different sizes. You booked a Suite which is the biggest room, and as we discussed with you any time you wanted more heat you only had to ask - we do have the thermostat set during winter so no other guests have commented, but you did say you feel the cold particularly and leave the heat on over night at home, which we did for you too, so am slightly surprised by your comments. In addition we do offer plug in oil radiators too but we recognise with so many guests every year every one likes things a certain way - and we did have guests ask us to tun the heating down that weekend too! Anyway thanks for comments, and regarding value we think £105 a night for bed, parking and breakfast for a Suite is very good value particularly with such high overheads this year, we have actually reduced our prices from last winter, many thanks Gary

Lovely comfortable room and we were made to feel very welcome by Gary and Phiilip. Love the very well stocked honesty bar and the location is perfect for The Elephant - just a 15 min walk. We'll be back

Exceptional from start to finish, lovely welcome, balcony room was just as described if not better. The decor throughout was tastefully done with unique touches everywhere you looked. Gary & Phil are the perfect hosts, nothing too much trouble, Breakfast was top notch! I particularly enjoyed the fresh fruit and homemade yogurt pots, my partner enjoying a fresh non greasy English fry up. We used the honesty bar which is a lovely room to sit and relax, the locally stocked gin was very good. Definitely be returning, look forward to seeing the puppies again.

Torcroft Torquay B&B Hosts that don’t just go the extra mile… They would run a marathon with you and then get you water! Wow! Wow! Wow! What an amazing stay we’ve just had at The Torcroft - it was the first of what we know will be many visits. Firstly, customer service courses could be run by Gary and Philip - they know how to make you feel special and their ‘can do’ approach and sunny attitudes make your stay fabulous. From the moment we first spoke on the phone, to the time we came to say goodbye, nothing was too much trouble. They genuinely care about making their guests feel welcome and what a brilliant solution to food allergies…open the kitchen half an hour earlier, or keep it open half an hour later, so that there is no risk of cross-contamination. We even had a tray of toast and marmalade presented beautifully to us to take up to our room when other diners came in and food choices were going to be an issue. Simply an approach that is second to none. Secondly, the property itself: the stunning renovation programme that Gary and Philip have undertaken has created an absolute gem of a house with beautiful rooms that are filled with thoughtful features that create an atmosphere of decadence and indulgence with the comfiest of beds, gorgeous sofas, powerful showers, spacious rooms and fluffy bath sheets to name just a few. Constant supplies of fresh chilled milk and water to accompany the quality products and appliances in the rooms add to the feeling of being pampered. Add in the honesty bar in the guest lounge which is filled with all you could need to mix your own drinks should they not be on hand shows the level of detail and warmth that they extend to their quests. The Torcroft stole our heart, Gary and Philip feel like friends we’ve known for years and we can’t leave out Patti and Punkie - their waggy tails and wonderful way of greeting us every time we saw them was the icing on a cake that is worthy of being the show-stopper in any bake-off! See you next year! Jan and Ian

Fabulous stay at this wonderful hotel. It was chic but informal, the hosts Gary and Phillip were really friendly and welcoming and we loved the honesty bar. Our compact room was much bigger than expected and spotlessly clean. Breakfast was amazing, good quality ingredients, best veggie one I've had. We hope to return when we can.

What a great find. Beautiful hotel, chic design from the moment you walk through the door. The accommodation was absolutely spotless and the hosts were very welcoming. Booked a compact room which was bigger than expected. Room was up to a very high standard, bed was comfortable and loved the large bath sheets provided. Breakfast was outstanding high standard of quality food no corners cut here. The hospitality at this hotel is second to none, great location and will definitely be returning. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

This oasis of calm is a welcome spot for any weary traveller. Our hosts Gary and Philip go above and beyond to make guests feel comfortable and relaxed. The newly refurbished suite was a delight, with thoughtful touches and tasteful decor. We have never been the type to keep returning to the same place, but year after year we find ourselves returning. The only downside is the sadness of leaving our charming hosts, this fabulous hotel and the beautiful dogs in residence.

I have nothing unique to write which will differ from the other 800 odd excellent reviews but if you are looking for a beautifully decorated, well situated, fantastically hosted hotel with a honesty bar and 2 scrumptious hounds then this is the place to come. Couldn’t fault it!

What a wonderfully welcoming, beautifully decorated, clean and perfectly presented boutique hotel in a great location! We travelled as a couple with a young teen so booked what turned out to be a ‘huge’ double room with plenty of natural lighting, plenty of storage, lounge area and then down a couple of steps into an impressively large adjoining bathroom! Our daughter had a beautiful, recently redecorated bedroom (complete with a gorgeous wet room with gold fittings) so she was equally happy and enjoyed the selection of hot drinks and biscuits in the room. The beds provided THE most comfortable night sleep I didn’t want to get up!! Although only needing a base for a very short stay (being from the hospitality industry and working within well reputable establishments) we are both extremely ‘picky’ travellers, Gary & Philip are such warm and engaging hosts who have truly created a faultless guest experience-the junior member of staff at breakfast was also very polite, friendly and professional. The selection of hot and cold breakfasts were great, portion sizes were just what you want and cooked perfectly-my partner is beyond fussy when it comes to food but he had plenty of praise. There was no rush or feeling of clock watching at any point which made breakfast and check out the most pleasant experience we’ve ever had. The other communal areas are simply stunning and we wished we had more time to appreciate them. When we return to Torquay we would love to stay again! As many others have said before-If you are thinking of booking-Look no further!!
