The check in experience was straightforward although it would have been helpful to know about arrangements for parking in advance. The parking is at the rear of the inn and the signage states 15GBP for 24hrs - we paid the parking via the meter and when we mentioned it to the person who checked us in, they explained guests don't have to pay.

Our room was nicely decorated although the bathroom was very tired looking and could do with an update. Our room was on the first floor and as the fire doors weren't closed we did experience a lot of noise from the bar and restaurant below so we cancelled our follow up booking as the lively atmosphere was not what we were looking for.

The Half Moon Inn is situated right across from the abbey so it is in a good location but the noise from the pub and the abbey clock didn't make it a good fit for us.

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear of the inn should be quieter. The rooms are only accessible via steep stairs.

Great location in the middle of the town and a traditional town centre pub used by locals which was good to see. If arriving on a Sunday as we did it is quite likely there will be a street market on so check in advance to find the rear way into the car park.
Our room was located facing the abbey and very little noise from the bells as some have commented, there was however some noise from the pipework at times during the night. Comfortable rooms although some of the corridor and bar areas would benefit from a coat of paint. Staff all friendly and helpfu

The exterior of this old coaching inn pointed to the potential delights inside. Sherborne, as a whole, is all old buildings and honey coloured stone.
Smooth checkin, room was a nice twin with ensuite, right over the coaching entrance, so nothing under us but air and road. Given this, the room was remarkably quiet.
My personal feel is that this gorgeous old hotel is due for a light makeover soon, as there were some signs of wear and tear in all parts that I saw, but everything was clean ,as you'd expect, with comfy, fresh, beds, and the bathroon all worked etc.
My friend had booked us in for both dinner and breakfast, so come 7pm we're in the dining area of a very, very busy pub. I'd say mainly the younger end of the locals, but despite it being Grand National day, plus footty, rugger etc. the crowd were noisome, but polite and well behaved, and once in our room you could not hear any of that happy, busy buzz from the bar.
Martsons, being a chain, the food is on a menu to be sampled in any of their outlets, but the service was swift, certain and the food was of excellent quality. Our server, a lovely young lady named Kayla, could not have cared for us better and was so very friendly, despite the seemingly never ending change of table occupation around us. Although things were loud and busy, we were able to take an unhurried dinner before retreating to the quiet of the room for a good nights rest.
Breakfast, a full english, was hot, tasty, fresh and set us up for a spot of sight seeing. We dipped back in for lunch too, just a spot of soup, but again, despite being busy with Sunday Lunch trade, we got excellent service and care.
Would I come again? Absolutely, 4 stars just because it is looking a little faded in places - hardly a surprise with how busy they seem to be all the time, but it did not materially affect any part of our stay.

Parking was easy right out back where once the horses would have been stabled, included in the price, a most efficient & friendly receptionist booked us into our room on the first floor conveniently at the top of the stairs. The room was clean & well presented with all necessary facilities, we booked dinner for seven p.m., it was exceptionally busy with the Grand National on a massive projector TV in the ample bar, then the rugby later, full of sporting enthusiasts & noisy locals of all ages.
In spite of being extremely busy our order for food & drink was taken so quickly & efficiently by Kayla who maintained her enthusiasm for exceptional attentiveness & pleasant service throughout the whole frantic evening. The food was great, perfectly served, exactly as ordered as were the drinks; no errors you'd expect on a very busy night; wow factor;so much so that we both commented on how five star hotels did not usually match this level of service.
In spite of the noisy but fun atmosphere downstairs, when we retired to our room at about 10:30 upstairs was so quiet. Indeed we were wholly undisturbed and enjoyed a quiet and very comfortable night sleeping soundly on the excellent mattresses. The room was spacious compared to more modern hotels and was perfect & cosy throughout a cold windy night.
Breakfast was a delight, a value for money full English was our option, again Kayla took our order and staff were so friendly & attentive, we returned for lunch before our departure from Sherborne after our two day tourist visit.
Just opposite the Abbey & close to the Market place, near Sainsbury's & the main shopping on Cheap Street alongside, the hotel is no more than a ten minute walk from most of the attractions.
We simply loved everything & the Half Moon Inn really added to the thorough enjoyment of the weekend away, highly recommended and great fun for families too.

We stayed in Room 1 for £70.00 which was a large room with a large comfortable bed, lots of space to move around.
The staff were lovely and you have the use of the pub and restaurant.
My husband had breakfast which he said was tasty.
You don't need to pay for parking if you stay at the Inn and we would definately return.

The staff were lovely. However when you pay nearly £100 a night you don't expect the toilet roll holder & the shower gel holder to be hanging off the wall, a stained & rusty bath, swively taps & general scum plus an extra charge for breakfast. Tired paint work throughout the establishment. Reception area is dark, dingy, cramped, & mostly unmanned. Just a few seats & a vase of flowers would make a big difference. Make it look like it is cared for. Either that only charge £50 or £60 a night then you might expect the barely adequate hotel room that is offered.

The Half Moon is located in the centre of Sherborne opposite the Abbey and a short walk from the station.

Our room was fairly small with not much hanging space for clothes but adequate for our two night stay.

The bathroom was reasonable with shower and bathtub although some of the fittings required re fixing.

Breakfast at £8.75 per head for a cooked version was good. Juice, hot beverages and cereals were available plus a small selection of pastries and croissants.

My freshly cooked English breakfast was pretty good.

A little expensive at £120’per night but overall, a pleasant experience.

A pleasure to visit this pub whilst on a weeks holiday in Sherborne. Well organised, with a one way system, which was strictly monitored by the manager, and name and phone number taken. Plenty of hand sanitizer available and recyclable menus. Well priced good food, quickly served by pleasant staff!
