We were vising Alfriston at the end of January '17 and decided to stop for lunch. There were numerous options and we opted for Ye Olde Smugglers Inn. It was delightful. We received a warm welcome from the staff from the moment we walked in. There was also a lovely fire in the main area of the bar. This was...

We live locally and every 3 years or so, revisit the Smugglers in the hope that the food has improved. Sadly after a visit last night I have to say it hasn't and I came home disappointed. I ordered a smoked salmon and prawn salad and was astounded to find, when it arrived, that it consisted merely of a few...

Decided last minute to get somewhere to eat with friends (on a Sunday) and came here expecting to eat from a menu having been here before, but were told that the carvery was still on so we plumped for that. Overall we had a very nice meal with a decent portion and the veg was still quite fresh considering it...

We have driven through Alfriston hundreds of times and never knew the Smugglers was there! Having found it, we will be paying a return visit. Has bags of character, the food is very good and reasonably priced and the staff are lovely. We sat in the conservatory, which is light, bright and cheerful, there is a lovely courtyard outside with...

Had a lovely meal with the best pub chip I've had for a long time, great friendly staff, especially the lovely young lady. Looking forward to play in the pub later this month. would have given it 5 only for the beer wasn't up to much.

two couples stayed here on the South Downs trail - this feels a really old inn and the bit we stayed in reflected that! But the rooms had everything - and what they didn't the staff found for us! Good beer and authentic local atmosphere

Returning to a pub I used to frequent over 20 years ago, I hoped it would live up to my fond memories and I'm pleased to say that it did. The service was very friendly. Both the halloumi & red pepper burger and the beefburger were extremely tasty, very high quality and took just the right amount of time to...

If it's rum they used to smuggle at this ancient inn, it must have taken them quite some time. I've seen glaciers that move faster than the bar man who, though reasonably pleasant, looked almost as old as the beams that hold the place up. Our sandwiches, when they eventually arrived, were decent enough, as was the ale on offer....

We arrived in the middle of a torrential cold downpour to a very warm welcome. The new owner immediately had the fire lit for the three of us, and our very soggy dog, and couldn't have been more welcoming. The rooms were clean, though dated, and the accommodation area is a rabbit warren of interesting rooms, with a lovely guest...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The building on the site dates back to 1358 and is Grade II listed, and is located in the centre of the Mediavial village of Alfriston which itself is in the South Downs National Park. It originally went by the name Stone Cross Beer House, as the beer was brewed in the Barn at the back of the pub. The name was then changed to the Market Cross and then to its present name Ye Olde Smugglers Inne. Traditioanl pub food is served along with a selection of real ales and fine wines. There are currently three letting rooms which share two bathrooms between them as due to the age of the building the opportunity to provide en-suite facilities is not available, but still provide comfotrable and clean accommodation in what is the second oldest building in the village. Whilst there is no parking facilities at the pub there are two public carparks within easy walking distance. ... more   less
