The Star, housed in a mixture of new and old buildings, has been totally rebuilt, with new roofs, new wooden windows, many trees planted and its 30 bedrooms and bathrooms all remodelled and newly decorated. The dining room is decorated with a striking black and white Elizabethan design on the floor. The library is a sanctuary for guests to enjoy a drink or a cup of tea, or play one of the board games. Its bookshelves are packed with poetry, short stories and novels by British authors, and there is a section dedicated to local history, flora and fauna. The library has a secret door that opens onto the restaurant.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We have just come home after two perfect nights at the Star. It was absolutely incredible... interiors wise the attention to detail was off the scale with no scrimping or cutting corners. The food was absolutely delicious - we were huge fans of the breakfast. The thing that struck us most was how lovely and attentive all of the staff were and we could tell they all legitimately enjoyed working at the Star.

The star (no pun intended ) of this hotel is Matt at reception. His enthusiasm for the hotel over the phone was catching , so we went ahead and booked a room at the hotel because of him. The hotel itself is quaint, a little overpriced for what we actually received, but no real complaints. The room was nice, and we had what we needed. The breakfast was great, and most of the staff ( other than a few who didn't even acknowledge you in the restaurant area), were nice. What made our stay was definitely our wonderful conversations with Matt who gave us lots of information about the area, and Ovi the porter. They were so welcoming and nothing was too much trouble for them. We ate in the pub which was cozy, and although the bartender wasn't very welcoming, the waiter and the woman who took our order were very nice. The pub is very quaint with a beautiful fireplace. It was cozy and romantic. The location is wonderful and the town of Alfriston is delightful. The parking at the hotel was very convenient. Overall, we had a wonderful time at the Star.

We’ve never had such excellent service and food. It was a heavenly place to stay and The hotel was beautifully decorated, with such style and taste thanks to the owners Alex and Olga Polizzi. A little bit of heaven on earth.

I have visited here twice, this time for a friend’s birthday. We were seated in the dining room. The ambience was great, a nice busy vibe without being too noisy (unless we were the noisy ones !) I had a vodka martini to start which was delicious and for dinner I ate the tortellini and Frito Misto, both of which were tasty well presented and portioned. The staff however were the highlight, attentive, knowledgeable, engaging and were genuinely happy in their role. Credit to all the team at the Star, you are all Stars and we can’t wait to come again, thank you.

We often drive to Alfriston from London at the weekend to go walking. It was my 60th (gawd!) birthday and we thought it would be nice to have a few nights in the village. Such a lovely hotel. The staff are very friendly, and our room was gorgeous. We had room 1 which has an enclosed private terrace. Wonderful bathroom with amazing water pressure (wish our shower at home was as good as that). Lots of good books in the room, and in the library. Also, one of the best bookshops in the UK is just a few doors away (who apparently helped pick the books for the hotel). The restaurant was good, and I particularly liked breakfast. Really enjoyed looking at the painting of the woman above the buffet (when you know, you know..!) Only thing that annoyed me was that they sat everyone at dinner like a row of dominoes right next to each other. ‘Would it be rude if I asked to move?’ I said to my husband. ‘Yes,’ he said. The good thing about getting older is you don’t care what people think of you anymore. We moved to another table.

We wanted to take a moment to express my sincere appreciation for the exceptional experience we had during our recent stay at The Star. Having visited some of the most luxurious and renowned hotels around the world, we can confidently say that this establishment stands out as one of the best we have ever had the pleasure of staying in. From the impeccable service provided by the housekeeping staff to the attentive management team, every aspect of our stay exceeded our expectations. The restaurant, in particular, impressed us with its outstanding cuisine and diverse wine menu, catering to a variety of tastes. In my opinion, every penny spent on our stay was truly worth it. We were so delighted with our experience that we have already made arrangements to return for a longer stay later this summer.

What a gorgeous base to explore a fascinating area. The staff were without exception friendly and helpful. The food was delicious and the room gorgeous. We had a lovely little courtyard (room 1) which felt very private. Highly recommended. The village itself is wonderful. Although sadly most of the quirky shops were shut which was a shame but we happily lost an hour in the fantastic bookshop.

We had the most delicious lunch. The Ale pie was wonderful and the desert of bread and butter pudding probably the best I have ever had. Lovely staff and really pleasant surroundings. Stylish without being stuffy. At about £55 per head for three courses and a glass of wine it was good value too. Looking forward to our next visit.

We made the most of the beautiful Easter Saturday weather & walked along the Cuckmere. It was such a happy day, we decided to stay & eat in Alfriston & chose The Star. We initially had a drink in the courtyard. The barman was polite & friendly, as were all the staff. We asked to book a table & were given the time we requested. Another stroll at Cuckmere Haven & we returned to a much anticipated meal. We weren’t disappointed. We were given a choice of dining in the restaurant or the bar area & given our casual dress, we chose the bar, which was cosy & quiet. We were dining at 6.30 & the bar slowly began to become busier. As people began to arrive I became aware of dogs arriving with them. I am allergic to dogs, but am able to tolerate them around me. My experience is that they lie quietly on the floor next to their owners. I was shocked to observe a medium sized dog jump up onto a bench seat next to its owner. Another dog was put on a chair next to mine. The dogs were made very welcome & even petted by some of the serving staff. With so much effort being put in to our experience at The Star, I was shocked that this was considered acceptable. I would have appreciated a clearer explanation of the dining arrangements. Our meal was delicious & the staff friendly & attentive.
