If you could condense the spirit of a town into one building, Artist Residence Brighton would be it. Creative, bohemian and downright eccentric, this unique boutique hotel at the head of Regency Square was reborn when we sent out an ad offering artists free board in return for their services. As a result, each of the 27 rooms is a blend of quirky original artwork and local character, with eye-popping sea views over Brighton seafront and the iconic West Pier. Downstairs, Blake's Bistro is a lively all-day neighbourhood hub, with light and airy spaces for a laid-back brunch, settling in with your laptop and a coffee, or enjoying dinner & cocktails.

Artist Residence Brighton stands out for its eclectic charm and inviting ambiance, with guests frequently lauding its unique decor and artsy flair. The hotel's cleanliness and thoughtful amenities receive high marks, contributing to the comfort of the well-appointed rooms, though some guests have noted issues with room size and soundproofing. While opinions on value for money vary, the prime location and the warm, often helpful service are popular highlights. However, occasional reports of inconsistent service remind travelers that experiences may differ.

Everything about the Artist Residence in Brighton was fabulous. Its location is excellent with a car park right opposite, the sea front is visible from the hotel and a moments walk. The Pier an easy 15 minute stroll and the Laines 10 minutes.

Chloe and Amber who looked after us could not have been more welcoming and helpful. The three rooms we had 6, 8 & 9 were all lovely. 6 and 9 were ideal for single occupancy - albeit both with double beds so you could squeeze two people in - and the more spacious room 8 would happily suit a couple. All had a sea and i360 view.

Complementary tea/coffee/water and caramel biscuits were ideal. A fully stocked mini bar and well staked "snack basket" were all for purchase too. The beds were exceptionally comfy, great pillow height and, as I like to sleep with the window open, the duvet was the perfect amount of snuggly.

They supply a copious amount of Bramley toiletries for use. Everything you could need from shampoo/conditioner/body wash/hand wash/body lotion all smelling divine. Plus complimentary cotton pads/nail file/comb/toothbrush. So much I can't remember it all but if you had forgotten anything it was there.

There were plenty of soft towels and flannels plus robes for use. Also available to use was an umbrella, a hairdryer, slipper and a bag of charger adapters. Just for good measure Jazz Fm was playing on the classic radio when I entered the room to add to the ambiance and the tv had masses of channels if you wanted it. I'm pretty sure they thought of everything to make your stay as comfortable as it could be.

Although breakfast wasn't included in the price the menu was extensive and you could tell from the colour of the yolks the poached eggs were fresh, the bacon was delicious and they were even able to provide edible gluten free toast.

It wasn't the cheapest place to stay in Brighton but you definitely got value for money. If I had one negative (and in all honesty it wasn't a negative for us but might be for others) or just a note really there is no lift and the stairs are quite steep. As it happens we arrived early and left our luggage while we went off for a wander and when we came back all our bags were already in our rooms on the second and third floors.

I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again if I was staying in Brighton.

Another lovely stay at ARB. Stayed in a different room from last year which, despite being the same grade, seemed a little smaller and due to its space saving/trendy sliding wooden toilet door, would only suit couples fully comfortable with every aspect of their relationship! Despite having a rainfall shower head, this seemed to have been disabled. Great sea & doughnut view though, lovely toiletries and staff really friendly as ever. We love the location - parking literally across the street (although not cheap) and an easy walk to the front and the rest of town. Wolfox coffee on Preston Street is excellent, Hole in the Wall around the corner is a great little local and, a bit further afield, can't recommend the Black Dove highly enough- just leave two seats at the bar please.

We always look for the quirkier hotels rather than the generic chains, and boy did we win out with the Artists Residence Brighton. An upgrade on arrival from a Comfy Balcony Seaview to the room I really coveted, the Bigger balcony Seaview (with copper soaking tub) was like winning the lottery. Our room wasn't ready as we'd arrived very early after travelling overnight from Edinburgh, so we enjoyed a delicious breakfast and they happily stored our bags while we went out exploring and walked WAY too far along the coast and back through the Brighton laneways. On arriving back at the hotel in the late afternoon, we found our bags in our room, the little radio in our room playing some cool jazz and we couldn't drag ourselves away, so grabbed some local takeaway fish and chips, a couple of drinks from the bar downstairs and sat at the little table by the window and took in the sunset. The little touch of lavender spray for your pillowcase meant we slept like babies. Book the Artists Residence for your next romantic getaway and you won't be disappointed.

I stayed in a bigger seaview and I understand that the plumbing is difficult in an old building but the smell was horrendous and I’m shocked that they will allow people to stay in there for that much money. Room was very tidy though.

The food is tasty but inconsistent opening hours and not reflected correctly on the website. Booked for dinner and was told they weren’t serving dinner? Breakfast pancakes are really fantastic!!

Cocktails are all very tasty and would definitely re visit for drinks but stay somewhere else.

Staff are what make the place. Three girls that work there made our visit incredible. The two bartenders in the evenings were friendly and knowledgeable about the drinks and local attractions. The irish girl in particular is a fantastic asset to this place. I can’t remember her name but thank you for everything ❤️❤️

Despite how lovely the drinks, pancakes and people were, due to the inconsistency alongside the bad plumbing and how expensive it is, we won’t be returning. Gave feedback in the morning on departure but the girl didn’t seem too bothered. A real shame!

Just returned from a 2 night stay, such a lovely quirky hotel. Room was so lovely we were in a Comfy sea view, it had a king bed, tea, coffee & a snack, fresh milk & water in the fridge. Gorgeous products in the bathroom that smelt divine.
The staff were really friendly & helpful.
We parked in the NCP about a 4 min walk away, this hotel is a fab location 5 min walk to the main shops, 2 min to the seafront.

Comfortable, quirky, friendly, great breakfast, excellent service and value. Rooms are equipped with everything you could possibly need and are quiet, very clean and each one is different, with fun artwork. Convenient location for Brighton and Hove. The young and very competent staff know the area very well and share great tips on restaurants and nightlife.

We booked this last minute, my sister suggested it rather than a hotel. I’m so pleased she did this house is utterly beautiful, steeped in history in the heart of breathtaking Brighton. The room was quite simply amazing it was definitely the narrowest room we’ve stayed in. I had my three strapping teenagers with me and we had the bunk room with four bunk beds on one side, a small sitting area and cupboard with tea and coffee facilities, a tv on the wall and a separate well kitted out clean and perfect bathroom with a rain water shower. It’s the height of minimalism with everything you need. Very luxurious with really comfortable beds and loads of electrical sockets! Upstairs there is a wonderful lounge area with a sea view and a bar and dining area at the back as well. It’s a really interesting and different place to stay and beats normal run of the mill hotels and is very reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend and stay again.

Hotel-
The hotel is right next to Regency Square underground car park and a small walk to the main shopping centre, lanes and loads of at restaurants and bars!

The hotel and our room was very clean and very unique & quirky in decor! Lots to look at!

I had smashed avocado on sour dough toast with poached eggs for breakfast downstairs at a table with a great view! It was a generous portion and cooked really well :)

Staff were very knowledgeable and friendly.

Room-
We shared a double room (#22) and although small, it had everything we needed.
The room did not have a wardrobe or ironing board but I am sure these could be borrowed from the hotel.
The bed and pillows/ duvet were very comfy.
The bathroom was small and a little dark but the shower was powerful and stuck to consistent temperature.

I’d recommend this hotel to anyone seeking something unique!

We stayed at the artists residence for one night last weekend. It's the second time we've been to stay at the hotel, and after our previous happy stay we thought we'd try it again.

Due to having our two year old daughter with us we chose the (below deck - for up to four) room. Unfortunately, the room was a bit disappointing compared to our last stay.

Firstly, the room is situated in the basement area of the hotel. This meant getting to the room was a bit of a challenge when carrying our luggage and buggy, as the hallways are very narrow and the stairs are quite steep. It was also a bit off putting having to squeeze past the hotels communal toilets, the doors of which always seemed to be open.

The room itself although clean, was probably the noisiest I've very ever stayed in. The sound of footsteps and banging was pretty much constant, I'm assuming this was likely due to being situated directly below the bar area of the hotel, but I'm not sure.

We also awoke to find a leak coming through one of the walls that formed a puddle at the foot of our daughters bed. Granted, it rained very heavily that night, but it's not something you'd expect to find during a stay, especially for the price we paid.

Lastly, we ordered breakfast in the hotel restaurant. Whilst the food was nicely cooked, there were individual food items that weren't brought to us. By the time that the staff had recognised this and brought them out we had already finished our breakfast which was disappointing.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend this hotel and sadly we won't be going back. Whilst the staff, decor and location are very pleasant the actual quality of stay definitely fell below our expectations and isn't worth the money in our opinion.

The room (Cosy Double) was very cosy, comfy and well-designed - it didn’t feel too small at all, especially for a solo stay. Well-supplied with tea, coffee machine and Bramble bath products. The staff are lovely and welcoming and the breakfast menu is excellent. The downstairs bar/ breakfast area is cosy. You are also right by the sea and only a short walk from the station.

Small niggles: the walls between the rooms are thin and I could hear my neighbours going out for the night, coming back, getting ready in the morning etc. If you are a light sleeper this isn’t ideal. The rooms at the back of the property look over a back street so there’s no view to speak of. It would be brilliant if the hotel could offer a dinner menu as well as breakfast.

hi Hilary, even the large rooms are fairly cosy because the hotel is a tall building but not vast. As such, I don't think there are rooms for 3 adults. You might want to call the hotel nevertheless. Best wishes, Alexandra
