I’m a fairly regular weekend visitor to Brighton. And in an attempt to find that perfect compromise between price and quality, this week my wife and I tried the Travelodge Hotel on West St.

Now, if you know Brighton, you’ll be aware that West Street is twinned with a similar, slightly dodgy road in down-town Baghdad (only joking). But, to be fair, this does set the tone. After 10.30pm (and I’m now speaking from experience), security guards run the front desk and patrol the corridors. Whether this is reassuring or not is a matter of opinion. The hotel is opposite the ‘Revolution’ cocktail bar and restaurant and, for the record, Lazer Zone is close by with a very large Weatherspoons in the adjacent block. It’s going to be lively on a Friday night and probably insane on Saturday.

Being ‘of a certain age’, the rather charming receptionist allocated us a room at the back – overlooking a side street, so, to be fair, noise wasn’t a major issue.

The phrase ‘you get what you pay for’ must have been made up with Travelodge in mind. We paid £55.95, room only, for a Friday night at the beginning of February. I’m not sure whether we hit the bottom of the low season (a similar room at The Albion for the same night was only £40) – but this is very cheap for Brighton, where the worn-out hotels on the sea front normally kick in at £120.

The room was very clean and well ventilated (not stuffy or cold, day or night). The bed was first rate – with a selection of good quality pillows. It was a small room – but I’ve squeezed into smaller at both The Grand and Malmaison. The décor is minimalist, with just one picture above the bed, but there was a ‘proper’ high quality Samsung TV on the wall and (very useful in the 21st Century) many charger points for phones and tablets. The lighting is a bit fierce. There’s no subtlety here.

In the spirit of Travelodge, there are no fancy ‘products’ in the bathroom – just soap dispensers by the sink and in the shower. This is a functional bathroom with an underpowered shower and a very slippery floor (beware), but it is modern and immaculately clean.

Bottom line: Although, you get what you pay for and you know what you’re paying for, there’s a slight feeling of penny pinching when you go to this hotel. Great if you’re on a budget and only staying for one night, but location and high level of ‘security’ don’t make it a particularly relaxing stay.

Was skeptical reading the reviews, if you don’t mind an extra 2 minute walk from the car park the council car park is cheaper than the NCP car park which the hotel recommends even with the discount the hotel offers. We was on the 6th floor facing the sea (sea view rooms were beautiful) however the rooms were facing the nightclub which is directly next door. The nightclub is open until 3/4am so noise was heard if you needed the window open (which you did as rooms were hot) but hotel offers a fan which makes life a little easier. Room was clean and a couple stains on the carpet but didn’t bother us as it’s a 2/3 star hotel and you’d expect a few things like that. If you stay for more than 1 night cleaners will not clean your room or provide clean towels or tea/coffee due to COVID reasons which was fine for us as didn’t mind asking reception for extra towels as we stayed 2 nights. Staff are very friendly so unsure on where the rude comments have come from in previous reviews. We booked “unlimited” breakfast in the morning and we had to prebook a time slot at reception the day before, when you get to the cafe in the morning staff wait on you and get your tea/drinks and hand you a menu with a pen and you write down what you want and the staff serve it on the plate for you. So it’s not exactly a ‘buffet’.

Personally if you don’t like noise I wouldn’t recommend this hotel, we was on the 6th floor out of 8 and the noise is quite loud. So the noise complaint from the other reviews is true.

I would stay here again if I was given the same room or a room on a higher level.

Thank you to all the amazing staff x

Stayed for a coiuple of nights with our 2 teenage kids.

Positives:
Reception staff are very friendly
Clean Room
Great Location

Negatives:
Toilets in reception out of order
Pumping music from nightclub next door until 4am
Hotel Bar closes at 11pm so no nightcap available
Room was not cleaned and made up during the day (not sure where the cleaner got to)?
No Air Conditioning
No parking - you have to park in nearby NCP car park at a cost of £47 for 2 days!!!!

Bring some ear plugs and you should be OK :)

The hotel is clean enough and everything is on the doorstep.

There is a 2,400 person capacity nighclub right next door so prepare for some noise.

Shame that the bar closes at 11pm as after a manic evening out a nice wind down drink in a quiet bar befor bed would have been nice.

You will need to wind down after being out and about in Brighton as it's pretty full on to say the least.

Prorbaly wouldn't stay again but for most people the hotel will do a job - even though like all UK accommodation at the moment it was horrifically priced (nearly £500.00 for 2 rooms for 2 nights)

The hotel is in a great location with everything of interest being walking distance but also it over looked nightclubs on 2 side.

I was aware of the noise but after advice from trip advisor I asked for a room that was on the quieter side.

Originally I was going to be in room 511 but after asking for a quiet room I was moved to room 415 we walked into the room and was instantly hit by the smell of stale cigarettes and the window was open which in January should have been a warning sign that they knew that the room stank.

The room was clean but the bedding was visibly clean but stank of cigarettes and there was bleach stains on the carpets.

I thought at least they gave us a quiet room and because it was gone 10pm when we arrived I decided we would try and sleep and see if we can get clean sheets in the morning.

The room next to us started getting rowdy with the smell of cannabis coming room they room at around 11pm and at the same time the nightclub music started and that is when we noticed we had been giving a room that over looked the nightclub so much for a quiet room.

Around 12.30 I went to complain about the noise from room 414 as they were getting louder and playing music and play fighting and I think I disturbed the conversation between the desk staff and the security guard as I was given a very filthy look.

I was informed there was no spare rooms and basically told to just go back to my room and they will look into the noise.

The noise stopped around 1-1.15 not sure if this was investigated by the security or if they people in the room finally left for their night out.

I finally got to sleep around 4am when the music stopped in the nightclub.

The next morning we had a very nice member of staff help us change rooms and was placed in the room that we originally given of 511 this room was clean and quiet but the tv remote has maybe 3 years worth of grime built up on it.

We had a quiet night until a group of women came back at 4am and started screeching in the hallway.

I had noticed that this hotel seemed to attract non residents who was using the lobby to eat fast food and hang out while waiting for the queues outside the club to die down but security did remove them but it was quickly replaced by more. So maybe after a certain time they need a system that you can only get in if you swipe your card as many other hotels have.

I would not stay here again as I was left exhausted from the entire experience

Thank you taking the time to leave us feedback. We are truly sorry to learn that your stay was affected by external noise. Our more central locations may be noisier however to ensure our guests are comfortable we do try to work with the local areas and communities to ensure a comfortable stay. It is regrettable to hear this was not enough to guarantee a good night stay for you. We hope you will chose to stay with us in the future, where we will endeavour to restore your faith in Travelodge.

Booked to stay in this hotel one night one adult but get a nice double room, there is no air conditioning but the housekeepers kept my room cool by leaving the window open and closing the blackout curtains with the fan on which I really appreciated. I recommend if you want to stay in this hotel book your stay as far in advance if you can to lock in cheaper prices which is what I did. Also try and ask for a quiet room as hotel is next to a busy road which is what I did. Room and bathroom was very clean. The staff at reception are very helpful I wanted extra coffee sachets and they sorted that out for me. The location is fantastic right near the seafront, if you are on the top floors which I wasn't then you would get a sea view.

Very disappointed with my stay.
Do NOT pay for their wifi! I paid for a 72 hours pass and was barely able to log in. Kept getting knocked off the network, had to reset my connection, and often the Internet would just drop. The few times it did work, it was extremely slow. Definitely not worth the extra expense.
The room was absolutely tiny, which I usually wouldn't mind, given that I booked a cheap option. However, this one didn't even have a sofa. There's also no air conditioning, so it was super stuffy and boiling hot, with the window only open a small amount, and a fan on the desk barely providing any relief. You can't leave the window open because the hotel is right by the beach and people are very loud outside throughout the night. You also can't close the window because the room immediately becomes a sauna.
The bathroom had no air vent, and the shower head broke and dropped right onto my head when I took a shower! The think literally just fell apart. I called reception (had to call with my mobile as there's no phone in the room) and they did send someone to have a look, but it wasn't repaired. I had to complain in person at front desk the following evening before anything was done.
There is currently no housekeeping during a stay under 6 days, so no one will make beds or exchange towels. The prices do not reflect this change. You can ask at front desk if you need any refills or exchanges in your room, and staff are all very polite, but it's still quite a reduction in service with no reduction in price. Usually Travelodge are very reliable and decent for the price, but this time I just can't recommend the hotel at all.

The hotel is in a great location right next to the beach and shops. The reception staff were very helpful. The hotel room was basic, a fan was inside the room because it’s extremely hot. We stayed for 5 nights and we both never got a good night sleep, the noise outside was horrendous. Parking - you get 25% discount but still costs £24 for 24 hours which is a rip off. Nobody in the hotel was following the Covid rules, not wearing masks and wanting to sharing lifts. Unfortunately the younger generation think it’s ok to not wear masks and that it’s ok to be extremely loud on a night (well 4am). Then at 7am every morning the bins are emptied waking up anybody not already awake. Please follow the guidelines, the staff are doing their best and can’t enforce it ... to be fair I think they should tell customers to follow government guidelines. The price we paid isn’t what I expected no clean towels, no new bedding etc even had to ask for loo roll. We stayed for 5 nights and was given 1 roll. If you stay more than one night they should offer a discount. Would I stay here again NO, it’s too loud, rooms extremely warm. Yes we are in a Covid crisis however please discount your rooms if customers don’t a receive the full service we have paid for.

First of all the location of the hotel is great - next to the beach and walking distance to everything including the shops, lanes and restaurants. The staff we spoke to were polite and the room size and facilities were adequate for our 2 night stay.

Unfortunately there is no aircon in the rooms and ours was horribly hot, which made being in the room pretty unpleasant! They provided a fan but this did very little to cool down the temperature.

One other thing that was concerning was that we didn't see any of the staff cleaning the communal areas at any point during our stay. The lifts were frequently in use and not once did i see anyone wiping them down or disinfecting the buttons etc. With Covid i would have expected more cleaning everywhere in the communal areas.....

Three of us stayed in two rooms for one night and found the rooms to be very clean, considering we were right in main town it was very quiet at night maybe due to covid restrictions. Reception staff were extremely helpful, friendly and very professional and we had no problem with leaving our luggage until check in time and again next day. Breakfast was very plentiful and a great choice our waitress was very nice and all our requests were met with politeness. The hotel is near the beach, shops and the lanes. Will we be back YES most definitely.

I stayed here for a 3 day leisure trip and it was great. Really good value for money. Awesome central location. Good hotel and staff, no complaints. Tiny bit of a draft in room but blankets and radiator were good to help with this. Not much noise from outside surprisingly. This hotel doesn't have little bottles of shampoo/soap bars if you are expecting this - I'd suggest you bring your own. The coffee cups were not a particularly good fit for the coffee machine in room.
I would stay here again and recommend it here!
