We went to The Old Ship Hotel to take part in a murder mystery evening, which included dinner. The hotel which was hosting the event is situated on the seafront of Brighton overlooking the sea. it has a large entrance with a bar on one side. It has background music playing and is very clean and has comfortable seating. Some of the hotel however could do with an update. The murder mystery evening took place up stairs at the rear of the hotel in a large room called ‘The Paganini Ballroom’. This is a very large room which had dinner tables for eight customers and one of the entertainers. It was a very nice room with a good sound system but the room was very cold all evening. Such a shame. The murder mystery staff were excellent and very friendly and very good at their work. The food was tasty, well cooked and well presented. The hotel staff were efficient and friendly too. Overall it was a friendly and entertaining evening. Shame about the coldness of the room.

Dear Pisces232, Thank you for sharing a review of your recent experience. We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your experience of the 'Murder Mystery' evening, I have passed the details to the organiser. The Paganini Ballroom (originally named 'The Assembly Rooms') is a magnificent regency entertaining space, located in one of the older parts of The Old Ship Hotel. Work on building the Paganini began in the 1750's and was completed in 1767. The Paganini ballroom renamed just after 1831 after the celebrated violinist Nicolo Paganini gave a concert in December 1831 from the balcony in the ballroom. The Paganini Ballroom has and continues to host many a glittering occasion such as the 'Race Ball' and 'Prince Regent's Ball' in 1819. The Paganini is a beautiful location (Grade II listed), due to it's age it can sometimes feel a bit chilly in the winter months. We do have the heating switched on a few hours before any event takes place and additional heaters when it's particularly cold. We apologise for the discomfort during the Murder Mystery recently, I have passed the details to our events team to ensure more heaters are placed in the ballroom before the next event takes place. We appreciate such kind comments and hope that we can welcome you back to The Old Ship Hotel very soon. Kind regards Nick Bagshaw Duty Manager

Did the Brighton Rocks deal. Lovely stay. Staff couldn’t do enough for you the dinner & breakfast was top notch & the afternoon tea was incredible. The hotel has such character & is steeped in history. It was easy to walk everywhere or get a bus & we’d definitely stay again.

We visited to have an afternoon tea having been there 5 years ago. We weren't disappointed, if anything the food was better than the last time and that was great! I have to admit the dining room is tired but it is an old building on the seafront! The toilets are a trek downstairs, there is a lift. The Maitre D was really friendly and explained everything and nothing was too much trouble. Will definitely return and not wait 5 years!

Very disappointed in the ship. Very dated and run down. Room was sea view but windows dirty, curtain hanging off and sliding door wouldn’t shut. Also noise level on the Friday night from a nightclub opposite kept us awake til 4 am! room very basic and run down. Have stayed in many places in Brighton and this was one of the worst. Ruined my stay in Brighton for my Birthday 🙁

Dear Dishybird, Thank you for providing feedback on your recent experience at The Old Ship Hotel. We are always deeply sorry when anything happens to spoil the excitement of our guests stay. On behalf of the everyone at the hotel, I offer my sincere apologies, our housekeeping manager and also our maintenance manager also share their apologies following those disappointing aspects of your stay. We have cleaning and maintenance staff on well into the evening and a manager on site 24hrs a day so they can address any immediate issues our guests report. As soon as we were made aware of the listed problems we immediately fixed the problems. We do have the windows cleaned on a regular basis but during the winter months it's difficult for all businesses along the Kings Road to maintain the window clarity due to the strong winds and heavy rain with salt water on the seafront. Still, I am sorry it had such an impact on your stay. We sincerely regret the disturbance. Our City Central location can mean extra street activity on weekends. On your next visit, we would be happy to assign one of our quieter, internal rooms upon request. We are due to undergo a refurbishment soon to enhance the comfort and quality of our accommodations. We appreciate your honest feedback and hope that you will give us the opportunity to welcome you back in the future to experience our improved facilities. Kind regards Nick Bagshaw Duty Manager

Went to this hotel after an early check out from another hotel that was bad. Their service is great. They gave me a portable heater because the radiator was not warm enough and it was very cold. The room was very big and I loved the bathroom and how spacious it was

The most awful hotel ove stayed in. The whole hotel is outdated and in need of some serious tlc. There is even tape holding the carpet down in the main reception. We booked a sea view room expecting to be able to relax. Our room was above the American dinner that blasts put music onto the street until 10pm and was so loud there was a no way you could relax in the room. Noisy neighbours in the next room were playing drum and base until 4.50am even after they had been asked to turn it down. The sea view was obscured by the fact the windows were dirty and the noise from the street was constant and the windows didn't close properly so it made the noise worse. The smell of damp in the bathroom was awful. Breakfast was just luke warm and only offered tea or coffee, no other hot drinks! The shower in the room also takes 2 hands to turn on or off! Even though a complaint had been raised, the hotel is claiming I never raised one after the initial noise complaints, although we did before we left! If you are looking for somewhere to stay in Brighton, don't book here.

Dear Wonderwoman9307, Thank you for providing us with your valuable feedback. We’re disappointed to hear that our hotel wasn’t exactly to your liking. Please allow me to express my apologies and rest assured that we are taking the appropriate measures to address the problems listed. Myself, and my colleagues, go to great lengths to try and ensure all our guests enjoy their stay with us although there are some things we cannot control, and outside noise is unfortunately one of those things. We are very lucky to be situated on Brighton’s seafront. As unparalleled as it is though, we are in a city which offers as much nightlife as day life and so silence at night can never be guaranteed. Whilst we can certainly do our best to control internal noise, what happens off the premises is a little more difficult for any hotel along the Kings Road to control. Still I am sorry it had such an impact on your stay. I am truly sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay with us. Our housekeeping manager and also our maintenance manager also share their apologies following those disappointing aspects of your stay. I sincerely apologise and hope you keep in contact with us so we may be able to improve on your next stay with us. Kind regards Nick Bagshaw Duty Manager

I’d booked a king room. On arriving at the room, there were no curtains or blinds on any window - the accommodation opposite had a prime view into our room and vice versa. I had to notify reception. We were moved to a double with a sea view which was pleasant. In no room was there any information about the hotel, restaurant opening times, room service etc The food is very poor. Breakfast staff on two mornings forgot our orders, which might have been a blessing because everything on the plate was dry and exceedingly low quality. There was a skin on the small pot of baked beans. Dinner was abysmal. Scampi with chips. It was food you would probably find in Asda frozen aisle – that poor. The lift is from 1929 so has a unique ‘charm’. Says it holds six people but four adults is the reality. And don’t be in a hurry for it – it’s slow. Luckily, we ate out on the second evening. The heating seemed to be entirely controlled by reception – no controls in the room. Bearing in mind we were there in the coldest months (end of January/February) nights were cold. I had to ask for extra blankets. The windows seemed to be badly sealed as we could hear outside noise fully even though we were on the third floor. When at around 6.30 am on our last day the fire alarm sounded, it seemed to round off a poor stay perfectly. When I asked, I was told that one male guest had used another man’s head to smash the smoke alarm in a brawl. That kind of place… This has a four-star rating and I’m failing to see how this is justified. If you’ve ever seen the British film ‘Genevieve’ you’ll know what to expect. Not recommended.

Dear Manderley38, Thank you for bringing these concerns to our attention. We regret that your experience did not meet your expectations. Whilst we appreciate that our traditional nature is not to everyone’s taste, we are Brighton’s most historic hotel (dating back just over 400 years) and, as I am sure you will appreciate, that comes with its challenges. We are proud of our history, which is displayed throughout the building, although we are not blind to the fact that a building like ours needs continual investment to be able to maintain current market expectations. I apologise for their not being any curtains in the first room you were checked into, this was an oversite on our behalf. The curtains in the room had been removed for cleaning (as were other curtains in other guest rooms along the same floor), our housekeeping team mistakenly hadn't removed the room off the system when the others were done. We immediately room moved you as soon as you informed us. I am sorry to read that you did not enjoy breakfast or dinner in our restaurant, we normally receive great reviews about our restaurant. Although it's possibly due to personal preference, never-the-less I have forwarded the details to our head chef to look into. The Old Ship hotel dates from the year 1559, as you will appreciate a building of this age and vast size it's not always possible to maintain a constant temperature throughout in the winter months. We do our best in accommodating our guests comfort and we are on call 24hrs a day to assist our guests needs, we are more than happy to add extra heaters or blankets to guest rooms on request on long winter nights when required. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused by the unexpected fire alarm activation during your stay. We would like to express our gratitude for your understanding of the safety procedures we have in place. The safety and well-being of our guests are of utmost importance, and unfortunately, there are instances where such procedures, though disruptive, are necessary. After a thorough investigation, we confirmed that the fire alarm was triggered due to an incident involving a guest. We understand the frustration this may have caused and sincerely apologise for the disruption to your night. I sincerely apologise and hope you keep in contact with us so we may be able to improve on your next stay with us. Kind regards Nick Bagshaw Duty Manager

Disliked · Stayed 2 nights. First night booked through ‘murder 57’, which was great. Woken up to screaming and shouting early hours of the morning. This seemed to go on for about an hour and nothing was done about it. It was very distressing for my wife and I. Then the fire alarm was set off and all had to vacate rooms (which of course is the right course of action). Upon return to room there was blood up the corridor walls and on the carpet. Felt sorry for the cleaner who was scrubbing it but not until many hours later. About 30 minutes back into the room a member of staff let himself in our room, making me jump out of bed! He said he was checking everyone was ok after the fire alarm!? This seemed very strange as there was no reason to do so. Again made wife and I feel very uncomfortable. Then in the morning overheard a member of staff saying how he “enjoyed” letting himself into people’s rooms! The 2nd night I booked separately in advance so we could enjoy a weekend away. I understand the hotel is old but the room was so bright from the light outside, the door outside of our room (in the corridor) was so loud that it was a constant disturbance. I’ve never complain about a stay before or a meal etc but can honesty stay this was the worse I’ve experienced.

Can't complain at the price but this grand old historic hotel on Brightons seafront needs some serious upgrading - it's looking really tired and shabby in places. It's clean and some areas have been renovated like the bar But the bedroom was shabby. Missing grout, wobbly fittings etc. I'd stay here again as it's great value but I hope it gets a revamp soon

Warm . Clean and nice towels linen . We didn’t eat breakfast here Yes it’s tired in places - bath tiles , scuffed paint but for the price we paid - sea front - amazing .
