We arrived with a baby in a buggy and three dogs and whilst we couldn’t sit in the restaurant we were welcome into the bar area. Friendly service. Good menu. Water bowl brought for dogs! Highlight was the starters - delicious dips and padron peppers. Nice salad main, but sadly the added chicken was very dry. Prawns looked great! Will visit again.

The location of The George is excellent for seeing all the main sites and shops in Rye. It is worth noting that parking outside is limited so the best option is to either drop off and then drive to one of the many nearby car parks or park up and bring your bags to the hotel. The building is full of character and is older than it looks from the facade. The floor of our room was not level, but that added to the charm of the room. The furniture was from a range of periods and locations. The room we stayed in overlooked the High Street and was still quiet at night. There were two sets of blinds, one for privacy and another set for keeping the street lights out at night. The bed was very comfortable with a range of pillows. The was a small built in wardrobe that had a high hanging rail, which could be a problem for a short person, but there was adequate space for a short stay. The bathroom had a large, deep double ended brass-coated bath and there was also an enclosed shower. The water pressure was good and the products of a good standard. There were sufficient plugs to charge phones and other devices. There is a smart TV with access to satellite TV, if you have your own personal accounts. Ensure you log off before leaving the hotel. There is a good free wifi. There is coffee and tea facilities including a kettle, but not a coffee machine. There isn't a room safe. I booked online and received a very curt and officious email shortly before my stay, warning me about cancelling the booking, car parking and booking a time for breakfast and dinner. Fortunately the reception staff were friendly and helpful when we arrived qt the hotel. There are plenty of good places to eat dinner close to the hotel. While the dinner menu was reasonably priced and had a good range of offerings, what was served was just acceptable. The breakfast had a good range of offerings, some self-service and others brought to the table. Cooked to order breakfast was included in the breakfast price. Coffee was available using a self-service machine. If you like good coffee, I would recommend The Old Apothecary, a short walk from the hotel and a destination in itself. The George is a delightful, boutique hotel ideal for a short stay and for a visit to Rye

For the price of our stay I was surprised how average everything was. The hotel and staff definitely need to invest in paying attention to the details. So many little things were poor that it accumulated in a very disappointing and poor value for money accommodation. Hotel not very clean, floor at breakfast still had the previous nights mud and glass (which we saw brake) on the floor, dinner and breakfast very average, coffee from a tap! via tablet, wine served ‘warm’, plug in bath didn't fit, the dispenser tubes missing or broken off in all the soap/cream etc dispensers fixed to walls, place really looks and feels ‘flat’, kids bed not made up before our arrival etc. Like said, nothing serious, but unacceptable at this price. Seems the hotel is riding the wave of good days gone by. Potential to be so special. Would definitely not recommend it.

The hotel is good and well situated. The rooms are pleasant and well maintained. The staff are courteous. Breakfast was enjoyable and fun to ‘brew’ your own coffee via an iPad in the wall. What lets the establishment down is dinner. The steak was tasteless and ‘greasy’. The chateaubriand chosen by the couple on the adjoining table looked much better. The sticky toffee pudding was a disappointment. It was neither sticky nor a pudding. It was a slice in something larger with the sticky toffee poured on top. Whilst I would consider staying at the hotel I wouldn’t bother eating dinner.

We emailed this hotel to ask about rooms. We received an e.mail back saying they had no booking in our name. We sent another e.mail stating we just wanted info before booking and never received a reply. Sorry to say typical of expensive British hotels.

Having had a dismal experience at another hotel 10 miles away, and anyway intending to visit Rye, we came upon this outstanding establishment, which fortunately had rooms available. We explained our limitations with steps and our receptionist, the lovely Anna, wrote notes and explained that check-in understandably was normally at 3pm but she would consult the head of housekeeping for the most suitable room. She advised us to bring in our bags and leave them with her and then park our car. We went off intending to explore a bit, have lunch and then return. After parking we had coffee and then received a call from Anna to say she had a lovely room available for us and as we were still in the vicinity we went back to be shown room 38 which was indeed ideal and we could move straight in. It turned out we had been given a free upgrade. By the time we had collected our things and unpacked it was time for lunch so rather than go to search out a suitable place we decided to try the restaurant in the hotel. Brilliant! So much so we booked on the spot for dinner at the same table when we both had delicious lamb. Breakfast was lovely too so the George was a real find after such a difficult start to our 3 day break. Rye itself had lots to see but in the time we had we never got as far as the harbour. It is a lovely old town, a bit up and down but easy to explore and well worth a visit if you are in the area. If you want somewhere to stay, the George in Rye has it all: good accommodation, really nice food well presented and served, and above all very pleasant staff who seem so content in what they do it rubs off in the service they offer. If you can get in don't bother looking anywhere else because you cannot do better.

Stayed here three nights in March as a Christmas gift from my partner. Minutes from the train station, wonderful location, the ambiance and character of the hotel is amazing. Warm welcome from lady on reception, showed us to our room which was a bit of a jaunt bit like a maze but soon remembered the route. Room was small but had everything we needed, it was quite lovely actually, tastefully decorated, very clean, nice comfortable bed. Bathroom was excellent, great shower nice products. Never saw any cleaning staff but on our return in the afternoon our room was cleaned to perfection. Breakfast was pretty good, a very nice menu selection, first two days Chef was accommodating and exchanged poached eggs for fried for my avocado toast, but third day a different Chef wasn't as accommodating as I would need to change my menu choice if I wanted fried, which if you’re doing fried egg anyway did it matter. Lovely staff at breakfast especially (apologies if I get this wrong) the friendly Italian lady. Hotel bar was relaxing, comfortable, good wine on offer, but it did close quite early on the Sunday evening without warning and the gentleman on reception abruptly said no more drinks were available which surprised me especially for hotel guests. Monday was quite different, change of bar staff all together, friendly and attentive, came over to ask how our evening was and if we enjoyed the cocktails he made for us in the restaurant for during dinner. If it hadn’t been for the third day breakfast and the Sunday bar service I would have given 5 stars, but that kind of marred (a little) the experience of what was a Christmas gift and a romantic weekend. Would I come again, yes of course

A fairly rapid return to The George for me and another delightful experience - the same delightful staff, delicious food and comfortable rooms that I’d encountered 5 months previously. I was pleased to see that the fish stew was still on the menu and was as tasty as I’d remembered it but the Romney Marsh lamb my wife selected also looked very tempting - she said it was one of the best she had ever tasted. The breakfasts are also top quality. Overall The George has got a relaxed, welcoming feel, where nothing seemed to be too much trouble to the staff. Located in Rye’s High Street, It’s an excellent base from which to explore a fascinating little town.
