The Mermaid Inn garners praise for its cleanliness and historical charm, with guests frequently lauding the well-maintained, character-rich rooms. Many reviewers appreciate the hotel's prime location in Rye and the inviting atmosphere created by antique furnishings. While the service receives commendations for its professionalism, some visitors encountered delays.
Opinions on value are mixed; some commend the unique experience while others cite overpricing. The cozy amenities, including the bars and dining, are popular, though a few guests note the rooms' soundproofing could be improved.

Even before arrival the service was exceptional & we knew we were in for a real special stay.
The whole team are amazing, from reception / greeting through to restaurant / Bar and porter staff.
We were treated like the many famous royals / celebrities that have stayed & felt like we were living in a film set.
The rooms are beautifully preserved to an exceptional standard - we were lucky enough to stay in the famous hawkhurst suite, which had stunning views, was spacious & super clean, even with the old beams & quintessential character features. The beds were so comfortable- like sleeping on a cloud!
Food & service in the restaurant was 15/10 - locally sourced produce, cooked to perfection. I’m not a dessert person & managed to enjoy 3 courses! The lamb will live in my memory for a long long time!
Bought our Australian aunt & she said she has had a truly special time - making her birthday most memorable.
Cannot thank the team enough for a truly wonderful stay & great memories made.
Have already (& will continue) to highly recommend!

Plusses for me were Pre communication was good, charlotte helped me arrange parking at the venue. I came to reception, the lady was lovely and helpful and the porter carried my bag up which was nice of him. The room was lovely, bed was comfortable, plenty of tea and coffee, room was spotless. The bar was nice, Matt was a real character, friendly funny and a joy to talk to. Theres no shower in the room just a bath which disappointed me but that’s just my preference. Negatives: My partner and I decided to book the restaurant and didnt realise the menu in the room was different so it was far more upmarket. I wanted the Pork Belly but not all that went with it and the gentleman in the suit was quite rude telling me the chef wont be happy if he has to take things off the menu. I shouldnt of felt guilty and the lady on the table next to me was amazed how he said it. Im the customer so i dont expect to be told what i would like is a problem and eventually after he told he the chef said it was ok, i was halfway through my meal before i had any sauce. I wasnt best please to find a £12 Service charge on my bill but paid it.
Should I return I wont be visiting the restaurant again. This didnt sour my overall experience as the actual location, room, was very nice and i spoke to several people in the bar and they weren’t surprised i wasnt happy with the restaurant and the person who took my order.

Thank you for your review. We will share your praise with the Reception team regarding the communication, and the Porters, Bar Staff and the Housekeeping team. The Mermaid is 600 years old, sitting at the heart of the medieval citadel of Rye. Its' historic nature means we are unable to offer a shower in every room, but our website has images of each of our 31 Bedrooms, allowing guests to book a specific room to meet individual requirements. It seems there was a breakdown in communication regarding the Restaurant. We offer two menus, Restaurant Menu and Bar Menu. These can be found in the Room Folder, our website, Reception, Bar and outside Menu Cases, and are all up to date. The Duty Manager in the Restaurant clearly mis-communicated his humour, He is a long serving member of staff, who regularly ensures elements of dishes can be removed, as all our Menus are prepared and served to order by our team of Chefs. On the bottom of the Menu it states; "A discretionary 10% added for good service." We were interested to see you carried out a straw poll of guests in the Bar........we always read all our reviews......we suggest guests should look at our Open Table site for our ongoing reviews, such as.... "Fine dining in beautiful old building at affordable prices. Came for dinner during a mid-week break in Rye, the staff were friendly and attentive without being over-bearing, good selection of seasonal food cooked to a high standard." "The food was amazing I had a starter and main but was stuffed after my husband had a starter but he didn’t fancy anything off the main menu so they let him have a main off the bar meal which he said was equally excellent and he’s hard to please"

This is an amazing building. We liked the history of the place. Our room was large and characterful. Unfortunately we found it very noisy. We understand an old historic building can not be sound proof and we expected creaky floorboards and some noise. What we weren't prepared for was the thoroughfare outside our room and the word for word conversations we could hear from both the reception area and the bar. Luckily this noise did die down and it was relatively quiet overnight. We dined in the restaurant and the food was excellent. We were disappointed that our starter was served so quickly that arrived with our drinks and before the bread. The staff were very obliging and took them away until we had been served the bread. After our starter we asked for a fifteen minute gap before our mains. Again the staff were very obliging but every table around us had their mains brought out within a few minutes of the starters being cleared. I ordered a glass of wine which was brought from the bar and was not served cold. The waiter took it away and replaced it with one from the restaurant fridge which he said was colder. It is shame that these small attentions to detail distracted from what could have been a magical stay.

Thank you for your review. Rebuilt in 1420, The Mermaid has retained all of her historic charms thanks to 30 years of loving stewardship by the present owners. The historic design does make The Mermaid unique in so many ways, unlike any other hotel. We will share your praise for the excellent food with the Head Chef of our 2 AA Rosette Restaurant. We note your observation regarding service and we will share these with the Restaurant Manager. We hope we may welcome you back to this "Beautiful Building".

Bathrooms in serious need of revamp! We have stayed before (different room) and commented then that the bathroom was 'tired' (with the shower pressure being extremely low - as in a 'trickle' - and only luke warm. This time, there was a bath with shower attachment, but the pressure was again very low. more seriously, the towel rail fell off the wall when my partner removed his towel, causing him to stumble and hurt his arm. Bedroom: spacious and a very comfortable.bed. Negatives, very few (2) power points - the tv was plugged unto.one and the kettle the other. Although there were 2 mirrors, you will struggle to dry your hair due to lack of a nearby power socket! Evening meal was excellent, breakfast also excellent. One minor quibble, we asked for some lemon/lemon juice to sprinkle into the smoked salmon, but we were told they didn't have any. Was it worth it? Maybe...historic building etc,.etc,.but serious consideration needs to be given to updating the bathrooms. For the money they should be better. We have stayed in similarly historic hotels of similar age and these all have amazing bathrooms. Be aware you may not be able to park at the hotel due to the size of the car park. When we arrived (around 3pm) the sign was up to indicate it was full. We parked down the hill at a pay and display.

Thank you for your review. We note your experience of the Restaurant at The Mermaid was excellent, both at Dinner and Breakfast. This is because of the investment in the staff, both in the Kitchen with 8 Chefs and the Front of House staff. We offer 15 free parking spaces at the heart of the medieval citadel of Rye, the only such provision in Rye. There are a number of local car parks, one of which 5 minutes away is £2.50 for 24 hours. Reception will always help, and our website displays all available car parks. We note your thoughts on "revamp" and the simple comparison with other historic hotels.......The Mermaid is unique....605 years old....Grade II Listed....and after 32 years of loving stewardship we should like to note..... The water pressure is restricted because of the historic design of the building. The bathrooms are gravity fed by tanks of restricted size, hence the lower water pressure. There are no spaces in which to fit individual pumps. At times of heavy use it may require patience for the system to catch up with demand. Likewise the availbility of plug sockets is restricted by the design of the building. The Plantaganet building code was sadly not well developed. We were sorry to read of the accident. The towel rail has been re-attached. The Mermaid is unique.........we are like no other Hotel.....

Our stay at this hotel and the sarcastic and false response to our previous review from the so called customer relations manager has left previous happy memories of visiting Rye with my father before he passed away in tatters. The hotel has character but any recent updates to bedrooms have obviously been done on a very tight budget and not in keeping . The public rooms are lovely but the bedrooms are tired with tacky furnishings and very basic bathrooms. The place was also a maze of corridors , staircases and dark lobbies with unclear fire exits . A call to the local fire service after your flippant response to my concerns confirmed that more should have been done to inform us of emergency procedures and exit routes as signage was missing. Standard rooms are in noisy areas or in an annexe with no real character. The breakfast was poor with very little choice , small portions and buffet items dried up and not replenished . If the management want to charge top prices they should listen to customers critiques and improve things instead of banging on about the history of the place and accusing people of lying . The same easily remedied issues have been reported for years and nothing has changed. Maybe we were spoilt with the previous hotel we stayed in which cost less but had wonderful style and character and owners who genuinely cared about their customers. My review score has been downgraded because of the attitude of the management , not the rest of the staff who were lovely and doing their best under difficult circumstances. Incidentally if you gave your cleaners more time to do their job you will get better results and happier customers.

We arrived on Sunday afternoon, there was a cone across the car park entrance so my wife went to reception. When she asked about the car park the curt receptionist stated their car park was full and we would have to park over a mile away drive. However, the Porter over hearing this took upon himself to advise the owner who came out with the Porter and said he would move his car. This chap needs a customer service medal, he kindly carried our luggage to our room The Dr Syn sweet and showed us the secr car et corridor. The room is full of history although maintenance to ensure draws opened and wardrobe doors closed is required. The bed was reasonably comfortable. There is a slight mustiness, about the room maybe part of the charm and the windows really let the air in. After a walk around Rye we returned to our room and the bar was quite busy. The noise from the bar was quite disrupting We though if you can’t beat em join em! We ordered 1 gin and tonic and a mermaid rum a sandwich and a cheese board. The sandwich was very dry, the cheeseboard tiny and no cutlery. The ambiance of the bar was fine and a lovely roaring fire. We decided to go to our room afterwards This is where the positives end The sound of people in the corridors making huge amounts of noise continued until after 12. Let me be clear this was similar to a news years festivities outside our door. Then there was the noise above our room which seemed to be a party going on overhead. I don’t know what is above but it was loud enough to keep us awake until 12:30 at times we thought people were going to come through the ceiling. We were awoken at 5:30 am by seemingly the morning shift starting and the noise above commenced. We struggled to get any sleep after this. Finally at about 8am we went down to breakfast. We were seated by the draughtiest window in Rye We had the full English and were met by a complete plate of misery. Dry burnt bacon, crispy dry sausage, egg was ok, fried bread thrown in deep fat drier. The only saving grace is it was tiny, if I had paid £15 a head (advertised price) I would not be happy. I had indigestion for the whole day. The morning staff looked miserable and not happy to be there. Totally inattentive but this is representative of the staff within this establishment with the exception of the Porter. Would I go back? Yes to Rye but no to Mermaid Inn. I realise that the management of the Mermaid will now dissect this genuine feedback and attempt to discredit it like they have to every other negative comment. I generally avoid establishments that don’t want to improve

It would have been very helpful if you had raised concerns during your stay. On each day there is an owner present who would have responded to you. We would have highlighted that staying in a 600 year old building with sympathetic furniture is a unique experience. The wardrobe in Dr Syns Bed Chamber was there over a 100 years ago. You may have noticed that carved into the wardrobe is the date 1788...... The windows are leaded, not double glazed. They too have a fascinating history. If you had spoken to us we would have higlighted how the windows have the initials of the glazier etched in them....W.B. 1895. We have traced this to a glazier in the 1901 Census, William Bayley, who resided in Eagle Road. As for guests making a noise, our Night Porter if advised would have dealt with the issue. The Night Porter is the only member of staff on duty until 7.30am when the Kitchen opens. As for food quality, unless you comment at the time we are mutually dissatisfied. If it was so poor, the questions remains.....why did you not ask us to replace, but instead eat it? We note this is your 37th contribution on TA. It does seem that reflecting on them you have no luck in many cases in finding hospitality to meet your expectations. In this case your observations about the staff vary widely from the vast majority of our guests on this Site and Travel Zoo.... Open Table..Google...Facebook... After 30 years of stewardship of The Mermaid we still read every review, and always take the opportunity to help guests better understand this amazing building.

Had a lovely stay here last night as a treat for my birthday. Car park is small but there us a 24 hour car park nearby which we knew of at a reasonable price. Staff were very welcoming and very polite from the receptionist to the waiting staff. The room we stayed in was room 16 and even though we had heard about the presumed ghosts we slept so well - I'm slightly disappointed that nothing spooky happened lol. The bed was comfortable and the room was very warm. Lovely to have a room with a bath too as we only have a shower at home . We had evening dinner too which was served with a smile and was absolutely delicious. In the morning we had breakfast which was also lovely and in both meals we weren't rushed and the staff were on hand if needed but not over the top in your face like some places. Loved the wonky floor in the room too and and yes there are some steep stairs but that just added to the charm. It wasn't the cheapest stay but definitely want to have a return visit on another occasion. There are also a couple of lounges you can sit in with drinks which were quiter than the bar and had their own charm about them. Thanks for a lovely stay

We stayed in the Elizabethan Chamber for my husbands 40th this weekend and had a wonderful time. I cannot fault a single element of our stay.
We arrived at check in time and directed to parking space no issues. Check in was pleasant and was given help with our bags by a friendly young man.
We had lunch in the bar which was without question the best fish and chips I have had. Fresh fish, homemade tartar sauce and homemade mushy peas. My husband had the chickpea stew which was also throughly enjoyed. All well worth the money. The bar did get a bit busy but it’s a wonderful local pub so to be expected but the lounge areas are for residents/dinner guests only so we had no problem finding an area to sit later in the afternoon.
I noted a few reviews saying you could hear the noise from the bar in the rooms. We enjoyed a bottle of bubbles in the room before dinner and yes you can hear the noise but it wasn’t bad and was absolutely expected with the age of the building. It didn’t spoil our enjoyment one bit. Likewise with the uneven floors in the bedroom, we found it charming and totally in keeping with the feel of the place. Room was beautiful and comfortable - and no ghostly visitors!
Dinner again was absolutely delicious. I had the venison and my husband the seabream. Exceptional. We don’t often get a night away together due to having a young family but this was a superb treat and one we really enjoyed. The blueberry parfait dessert was also incredible. I would recommend staying here to anyone who fancied something a little different and a place with lots of character and amazing food.
In the morning we had a little walk around the local area which was lovely. There is so much character to this place it was a welcome change to staying in a “normal” hotel.
I didn’t catch anyone’s names but what I can say was everyone we encountered was friendly, attentive and welcoming. A wonderful stay. Thank you.

We arrived at our destination after a 3 hour drive. So we’re hot, tired! On arrival we were greeted by a very helpful member of staff in the car park who guided us into a nice space. Having parked, quickly someone arrived to assist us with our bags to take to reception ( and after rooms were allocated to our rooms). Very nice touch. As the In. Is a listed building so has uneven steps and ceilings that are low. Beautiful indeed. We needed 2 rooms. One double and one twin beds. Unfortunately, this had been erroneously omitted by my friend when booking was made. The receipt staff were amazing! Within minutes they had made contact with the lovely owner, who said that another small single room be allocated ( luckily it was available!) so we all had a comfortable stay. The breakfast was extremely high quality. The service could not be faulted! Definitely one to stay whenever in Rye.

My sister and I have just returned from a short stay at The Mermaid. We were made very welcome from the start and every member of staff we encountered seemed efficient and pleasant. The room was comfortable but quirky as would be expected in a building of this age. There were a number of trip hazards in the room and throughout the building, again commensurate with a building of this age, e.g. changes in levels, bumps in the floor, steep stairs etc. We had not booked a parking space but the receptionist was keen to ensure we secured a space, maybe after seeing that my sister has mobility issues. The only downsides to our stay were that our room, room 2, opens onto the courtyard where there is an extremely noisy fountain which splashes water loudly from first thing in the morning until 11.00 p.m. (and on the first night was turned down rather than off so continued to splash all night). On the second night it still splashed loudly until 11.00 but was then turned off albeit with some residual dripping. As we were only staying 2 nights we did not seek an alternative room but we did find the noise very intrusive both during the day and especially at night. We tried closing our windows the second night but quickly became far too hot. The other downside was lunch on the first day. We ordered bar snacks - a grilled mushroom panini and a prawn sandwich. I was expecting lovely warm grilled mushrooms but they were fridge cold and the panini itself was lukewarm. My sister's prawn sandwich came with cold toasted bread which had not been expected and we did wonder whether both the mushrooms and the toast had been left over from breakfast! For this reason we did not eat dinner at the hotel as had been our plan. Breakfasts were well-organised and pleasant.

Thank you for your review. Rebuilt in 1420 The Mermaid is of a historic design, all of which can be seen and described on our website, especially the Google Video Tour of the Hotel. The Fountain is switched off at 11pm each evening. It is either on or off, it does not have any other status. Please note the Bar Menu is designed for the Summer, hence the mushrooms are a cold dish, as are the sandwiches. Please always talk to your waiter, as in this case you missed an oportunity to dine in the Restaurant.

Hello there. Some rooms have baths, some showers so you would need to speak with reception if you have a preference. I’m sure staff will help with luggage upon request. There are no lifts as it is a very old building and the stairs are quite narrow and steep and depending on your room in the building there could be many. To be honest if mobility is an issue then this might not be the place for you. I’m sure staff would try to accommodate you the best they can if you speak with them but some things they have no control over because of the age of the building.
