Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Clarence Court Hotel is an old building, full of character. It's located only a tenminute walk from Cheltenham town centre. Unfortunately, as it's an old building, the insulation is poor and one can hear clearly what is going on outside in the corridors (and presumably vice versa). The breakfast is good and they are flexible with requests (we had bacon sandwiches, fried egg sandwiches, beans on toast, as well as the Full English on the menu). The staff are very friendly and cannot do enough to assist you. The swimming pool mentioned on the website is not in the hotel but in a local fitness centre (a five minute walk away). Use of the pool is permitted in the mornings at the weekends and in the afternoons during the week (remember a padlock for the locker, otherwise you will need to buy one). The evening meals were also very nice, although it would be nice with a few menu changes. We ate there twice but decided against a third visit due to this.

We have family in Cheltenham, so frequently visit. There are plenty of branches of hotel chains, but they have a certain similarity? They also frequently are more expensive than the Clarence Court, which has great character and twenty rooms. Hence you receive individual, personal attention! Rooms are well appointed and scrupulously clean. Beds are comfortable and room furniture is complementary to the atmosphere of a Georgian residence. Breakfast is of high quality, with excellent locally sourced ingredients, but the menu is compact and traditional. Only change I would make in the room is to improve both reception and sound quality on the TVs. There is a small but adequate car park included in the room charge, complimentary!

Friendly staff, nice room and good location. However, the bathroom was a little small, and there were no plug sockets near the bed for charging devices close by. We would still stay there again as overall as it had parking and was close to the centre of town.

We arrived earlier than our check in time , we were greeted with a lovely smiley receptionist who said our room would be ready in 40 minutes, she would ask housekeeping to do our room straight away .We explained it wasn't a problem but could we park up in the car park and we would check in after some shopping. This wasn't a problem. On checking in several hours later we were if I'm honest a little disappointed with the room it was a bit tired looking, the bathroom had a shower over the bath and needed tlc however both were very clean . The bed was super comfy . Location of the hotel is perfect for a shopping day . Breakfast was very good . Overall the staff were very friendly and helpful and we would return . Probably not suitable for guests with mobility issues as breakfast was down a steep set of stairs and the entrance has several steps to it .

If you are looking for a hotel somewhere central, that has the feel of the Regency period, decor wise, this venue may suit you. We found the room, decor and facilities offered, though not all used, to have a feel of a grand era and as described. It was wonderfully quiet at night. We only had minimal contact with staff, but all seemed friendly and welcoming. We had dinner in town, but had breakfast the following day at the hotel. The breakfast experience was not at the same standard as the room, being underwhelming. The food ordered directly from the kitchen was absolutely fine, but the self-service area could be improved upon to give the guest the sense that breakfast really matters as an eating experience and also because its the last meal eaten before departure.

The hotel falsely advertised the presence of a swimming pool as one of its amenities. However, in reality, the pool was not located on the hotel premises. Instead, it required a 10-minute walk and crossing a busy road to access. Additionally, the pool itself was not well-maintained and did not match the pictures that were advertised. This misrepresentation of the swimming pool as a hotel facility was a blatant lie. We also got turned away from the pool as told it was too busy on the hours we could use 2-5 pm. Not great with kids and ruined a good part of our stay.

My expectations of small to medium sized hotels in English provincial towns unfortunately are not set at a very high level. This hotel gets the details right, whether it’s in the bedroom, at dinner or breakfast. Most importantly, service with a genuine smile and care. Which means I am left, at the end of my stay, with a sense of satisfaction and gratitude.

This hotel is a mixed bag of both good and bad in my opinion. The location and the welcome was most certainly good, it’s just a five minute walk to the city centre and even less distance to the Brewery district for cinema, bars and eateries. The lady who checked us in was delightful, as were the rest of the staff that we encountered. However, this hotel is not suitable for anyone with mobility issues, there is no lift, very narrow tread, steep stairs, the dining room and bar are downstairs, in the basement, our room was second floor. The on-site car park is free, with sufficient, if tight parking for approximately ten vehicles, first come first served. When we made it to our room, having climbed over used towels, used bedding where the cleaners were stripping rooms out, we found the cleaner's box of condiments, cleaning equipment left on the bed. The room was clean but certainly requires some tlc and attention to make it more enticing, I did wonder if it had had a makeover as the bathroom hand basin was new and modern, but the decor was somewhat lacking. There was a plug in radiator available and what looked like an air con unit too, but this was held together with sticky tape, very odd! The bed was very big and extremely comfortable, but our sleep was disturbed by an air conditioning or extraction fan from another room being on until well past midnight and switched on again around six thirty am. The breakfast menu was varied with much choice, however whilst the cutlery was clean and good quality, sadly the knives weren’t sharp enough to tackle the bacon, sausage or indeed the toast! Great flavoured breakfast though, we enjoyed it and the tea was very good. Leaving the cleaning fluid and cleaning kitchen roll on the dresser was a bit off putting though. The place was busy which was good to see, I wish the hotel every success, with a bit more attention to detail, I think it would be a gem of a find for anyone wishing to spend time in Cheltenham.

Fantastic relaxing stay in fabulous Cheltenham. Great hotel with amazing staff. Incredible personal service off Gareth, the head chef in Restaurant 45 and Becky, the hotel manager. Waitresses and barstaff were all friendly and welcoming. The hotel itself is situated on Clarence Square and just a short walk from the Brewery Quarter and the Pittville Pump Room and park.
