Just a short stroll from the town's historic market place, hidden up a picturesque mediaeval backstreet, you'll find The Golden Cross Inn.This early-18th Century coaching inn offers a warm welcome to all, from those seeking a thirst quenching pint of real ale to discerning diners looking for gourmet British cuisine, and of course to weary travellers looking for a bed for the night. While the building itself dates from the mid-17th Century, landlord Mark Lindesay and his dedicated team have recently transformed the pub into a welcoming hostelry offering contemporary standards of service, great food, good company and comfortable, well-equipped bedrooms, suites and apartments. The Golden Cross Inn offers the perfect combination of contemporary sophistication and traditional charm with its exposed beams, classic pub ambiance in its snug bar, combined with a light, airy dining area, all tended by friendly and attentive staff.

Went for lunch with friends. The food was fine apart from the chips which were pretty bad. When she asked how the food was, I mentioned it to the waitress who said 'good'. Im pretty sure she just wasn't listening.

I didn't love the yappy dogs being around but if you're a dog lover, that might be a bonus.

We recently met a group of friends here after a wedding the day before. Set in a beautiful market town with wonderful surroundings we quickly found The Golden Cross down a quaint side-street filled with lovely independent shops. The appearance of the front of the pub and it's interior definitely suggests a dive of a pub, but looks aren't everything and the food, drink and service would be the telling tale of this lunch adventure.

We only ordered soft-drinks (a little sensitive still from the night before) - 2x cokes and a lime & soda. Now if I was to ask you to repeat what I just typed without looking at the drinks again I'm sure you wouldn't have an issue - so I'm not sure why I was asked 3x times by the bar girl. Weird, but no biggie. We sat outside in the glorious sunshine and conversed amongst ourselves.

Time to order a small bit of grub. We were part of a large 'tab' but ordered in batches to help out the poor kitchen cook who would have probably cried at the thought of 30x roast dinners at once. We ordered just a couple of starters as we weren't hungry (back to being a little hungover) and watched the staff bringing out all the food that was ordered before ours. One of the group overheard the staff say they all went out the night before and were a little worse for wear, and the calamity ensued. Wrong orders, dropping food and long waiting times were to come, all part of the fun. One waitress - frustrated with not being able to locate the purchaser of a burger - came to the garden to say, and I quote, "Does anyone know who ordered the chicken burger before I shove it in someone's face?". WOW.

And this is where I'm torn! What awful service by a group of students who clearly couldn't care less about the job. But one member of staff was great (nose piercing, whoever you are) and the food was excellent! Breaded Brie and Calamari Strips, excellently cooked and served.

A shame, go here for a pint and watch the football out the back. Order food at your peril!! :)

The only thing this place has going for it in my opinion, is the sunny beer garden. The rest is mediocre and clearly down to chronic understaffing. I have tried this pub/hotel on a number of occasions and each time its the same: one member of staff and a wait long enough to acquire cobwebs. How management can allow potential customers to walk out in frustration (we were a family group of 6 and not alone in walking out) is perhaps why companies like Wetherspoons are doing so well.
Try the Mad Hatter around the corner. They'e nice and they smile when they serve you. They have live music various times throughout the month and a Happy hour on weekdays, which was a nice surprise.

This might take a while but bear with me. We had booked a table for 4 for 13:30 on a Sunday. We arrived just after 13:00 so we were a bit early. Whilst we waited to talk to a member of staff, we heard them talking to a party of 5 who had booked for 13:00. The inn had another party of 4 come in with same name as the party of 5. Instead of checking if they were the correct party, they gave their table away. Fair enough, they apologized and said they'd rush to clear another table for them.
When we spoke to a member of staff, they had no record of our booking, even though we had their acknowledgment on our phone. They again apologized and said that if we sat outside until a table became available we could have a drink on the house, which we agreed too.
After about 15 minutes they came outside and said that they had managed to persuade another party, who had eaten, to give up their table for us. Thank you to those nice people.
After we sat, we waited another 15 minutes for someone to take our order. So it's now about 13:30, which is the time we were meant to get there. Another part of the original apology was that our meal would also be discounted.
At 14:30 our meals arrived, after 2 more reminders that we still hadn't eaten. I have to say that the main meal was very tasty even though the vegetables consisted of 1 broccoli fleurette, 1 half a baby carrot and some cabbage.

In summary, what a crock of 5hit. And we didn't get our discount. We now have them down as somewhere to avoid.even if they were the last pub in Gloucestershire

Well, where do i start !
Firstly, I was staying here with my husband for my birthday and the pub with guest rooms was situated in an excellent position right in the centre of town. although we didnt stay here with our 4 dogs, we are obviously dog lovers and were happy that the pub was dog friendly and had its own resident dog.
the staff were very friendly on our arrival.
From then on, everything went downhill.
Room 2 was a good size but the bathroom was TINY with black mould around the minute shower cubicle.
The metal bed creaked all night long every time we turned over.
We went out to eat on Saturday night & returned to the pub at 10.15pm with the thought of having a drink in the bar before retiring to our room. The pub was in complete darkness with the resident dog barking its tits off in the window.
ALL NIGHT LONG that dog barked, On & on, I looked at my clock at 3am & it was still barking.
Finally waking extremely sleep deprived on Sunday morning (my actual birthday) our day was ruined & rather than staying in Cirencester for the morning, we couldnt wait to pack our bags & drive home. My birthday was spent in bed catching up on sleep.

We highly recommend this pub for a Sunday Roast. We traveled from West Sussex to Cirencester and stumbled across this pub in the centre. The quality of the food was excellent. We could find no fault in the Roast, the beef was tender , Yorkshire pud fab and vegetables varied and cooked to perfection. To add, The ginger steam pudding was absolutely delicious! The 2 girls serving were outstanding considering it was busy. Excellent find.

Superb welcome when entering the pub. Nothing is too much trouble. Manager/Owners really welcomes people to this lovely public house in Black Jack Street, Cirencester. Staff equally accommodating and friendly. Beer priced very reasonably in these tough economic times.

We stayed at the Golden Cross for one night. We had a double priced at £100 without breakfast for two. We had to file past a busy bar with our luggage to get to a desk to check in. Then file back past the busy bar to get upstairs to the room. A pain when you have a largish bag. The bathroom was tiny - nowhere to hang the towel. The basin was also minute. The basin's tap in contrast was large and could not be opened fully as it hit the wall so I could only get tepid water out of it. The loo seat was too small for the loo - so there was a gap between the pan and the seat. The sheets had not been ironed and had stains on them - coffee by the looks of it. One of the hand towels had a red stain on it. There is a side entrance for residents (once you have the keys). Not the easiest of doors to open and when we left, we just dropped the keys into a letterbox. I will never stay there again.

Not a nice place to stay. Toilet not clean from previous residents, really unpleasant. No working light in the room other than the bedside light. Very low grade room overall with cramped bathroom. Staff polite and friendly though, hence 2 star instead of 1. Should be much cheaper for this quality.

Had a great relaxing drink in the courtyard, in this lovely quiet town centre location - just off the pretty Black Jack Street. Good, well kept Arkells beers and cider. Pub nice, and especially outdoor seating on a hot day.
