Eat, drink and flop in historic Winchcombe. To some it's a pub, others a hotel. Situated at the heart of the village of Winchcombe near Cheltenham, this ‘restaurant with rooms’ (there are 11) offers the very best of British food and an excellent wine list. Visit the wine shop and try the famous sausages in the Wine & Sausage eating rooms. A perfect place to visit or stay if you love walking or visiting Cheltenham races. Each of the 8 en-suite rooms are individually styled and some have feature beds. In the Wine & Sausage eating rooms located on the inns ground floor they are passionate about real food, the great and simple British dishes that we grew up with. Ingredients are carefully sourced and wherever possible use local and regional farmers, growers, fishermen, producers, brewers and even winemakers. Just a few metres away from the inn you will find the scenic Cotswold Way and Gloucestershire Way footpaths. The Inn is also very popular with cyclists and can help with routes around the area, especially via one or two other 'watering holes'. There's even a hosepipe for washing down muddy bikes. Winchcombe is an idyllic base for touring the Cotswolds and the White Hart is the perfect bolt hole close to the famous sporting and cultural festival town of Cheltenham.

Reviews summary
This summary was created by AI, based on recent reviews.
Powered by AI
The White Hart Inn presents a charming atmosphere that guests find quaint and inviting, although the ambiance is marred by areas that appear worn and call for renovation. Reviews highlight a disparity in service quality, ranging from commendable friendliness to disappointing indifference. While the comfort of the beds and the quality of the food generally receive positive comments, the amenities draw mixed reactions due to outdated features and occasional cleanliness oversights.
Accommodations offer pleasant views and comfort for some, yet others face issues with space and maintenance. Travelers express varied opinions on value, facing inconsistencies in billing and service.

Detailed Reviews
Myself and my daughter booked a twin room at the White Hart Winchcombe.
It states on various websites that there is free parking at this Inn.
There is NO parking! There is an area around the back where you can pull in whilst unpacking. We were directed further down the road where there are 4 parking spaces ( not owned by the Inn) and if we couldn't park here we could use the pay and display car park. We drove past the free area 3 times at various times and those spaces were always full. There were 2 staff on Thursday afternoon when we were checking in so we had to wait to check in. It was a nice afternoon and the garden had quite a few customers. I asked were they short staffed and I was told it was due to furlough!
We knew that we were on the top floor, with a shared bathroom. When we eventually got to our room, we inspected the shower and discovered that it had not been cleaned from the previous guest and worse still his/her bedroom door was ajar and the bedroom had not been attended to either. This was about 4pm. So back down to reception and we were given a different room on a different floor. Gareth, the manager said he did not know that anyone had slept up there the night before. We did not eat dinner at the White Hart. The bed was very comfortable. The following morning my daughter used the shower and discovered that the water was scalding hot or barely warm. But she persevered. I did not. I reported this to reception and Gareth came in and spent quite a while trying to settle the temperature but gave up in the end. He checked his bookings and found a room that had not been used the night before, so I could use that shower. It was on a different floor, but quite annoying that I had wasted my time trying to settle the temperature, to no avail. It looked like an old electric shower which obviously needed attention. Another point about our shower was that the door was dirty in the area where the seal meets the glass and also on the seal at the bottom of the door. Not under the seal! This could have been easily rectified with a good scrub. The previous guests towel was still on the back of the door as well.
This is a lovely old pub. It could be a great pub. Staff need further training and guidance.

Response from Gareth Stone, General Manager at White Hart Inn

Dear Carmel Thank you for your review. I did discuss and deal with many of your comments during your stay. We have now updated our website to reflect that we do not have parking on site, we only had 6 car parking spaces previously and 11 bedrooms so repurposing of this space into a garden for guests has been well received. As you know we upgraded your room to a Superior with our compliments, it was just unfortunate that the shower failed that day and has subsequently been replaced. With just coming out of lockdown at the time of your stay and with some new team members there were areas of our service and processes that were a little ‘rusty’ and for this I apologise. You are right The White Hart is a lovely old pub and we aim to continue to improve upon it going forward Thank you for taking the time to write All the best Gareth

Had a booking before the national lockdown moved to this week, so we were looking forward to finally getting away for the night.
Booked with a voucher for the 3 course dinner/fizz/overnight stay with our dog and checking in (at 4pm) was easy, we parked the car in the rear car park for the day as we arrived at half 1 then set off for a hike whilst the room was being made ready. Covid precautions are good and clear, the room unfussy and clean - although some bathroom toiletries would be appreciated!
Dinner was good and hearty with a good selection, had a few drinks and we were well looked after by the manager and the FOH (Patrick particularly). The real star was the fantastic cooked breakfast - we had the full English and black pudding & fried toast were welcome surprises.
All in all we enjoyed the stay immensely and the staff were great with us and our dog!

The floors are wooden with no carpet covering but the de luxe bedroom was more than adequate for our overnight stay. It was Friday night and the restaurant was packed and noisy. Being very Covid sensitive we opted to eat outside which was understandably the cold option. Our drinks never arrived but then they were very busy. The meal arrived and it was adequate. Breakfast was a much better exeperience.

Worst room we've ever stayed in. Classed as superior, but it was grubby, dusty and obviously hadn't been cleaned properly for some time.
There was mould in the shower and around the windows, debris behind the loo and sink from previous occupants, soapy water and toothpaste splashes on the tiles behind the sink and on the heated towel rail. There were scuff marks and dirty hand prints on the wall and door in the bathroom.
Black dust and fluff adorned all the skirting boards and surfaces. Sugar had been spilt behind the hospitality tray and had not been cleaned up. There was damage to the bedside unit tops and to the bedroom door. I
We arrived early evening and were booked in for dinner so didn't want to spoil the evening by comp!aining.
Dinner was good; generous portions, hot, tasty food. We were given discount on a more expensive bottle of wine as our cheaper choice wasn't available.
We spoke to the housekeeping manager the next morning. She promised to make sure the room was cleaned while we were out. We returned at 7.00 in the evening: the bed headboard had been dusted, the sugar cleared up and an ineffective attempt at cleaning the bathroom had been made. We gave up and went to bed.
We left the next morning without seeing a single member of staff.
We had booked with a Virgin Experience Voucher so when we emailed the White Hart Inn manager he said he would authorise a refund from Virgin, but we had to contact Virgin first. Which we did....almost 2 months ago, and we still haven't got our refund. Virgin customer services have been dreadful! Emails and messages take forever to be answered and no progress has been made since the first email of comp!aint!I
If you plan on staying at The White Hart Inn, avoid room 5. Better still, ask to see the rooms before you check in!! I wish we had! And above all, don't bother buying a Virgin Voucher....it's cheaper to book direct and if you have a problem you can go directly to the manager.

After a walk across Cleeve Hill I was looking forward to my lunch. Sadly it was a disappointment. I had the fish pie. Before I ordered I asked the waiter what fish would be in the pie, I was informed there would be salmon, cod and prawns. The pie only contained a tiny amount of white fish with a watery sauce, the worst fish pie I have ever had. When we were asked if we enjoyed our meal I explained that the pie was not good, the waiter was disinterested and informed us he would inform the chef however he failed to feedback when we paid the bill.
The female toilets soap dispenser did not have any soap in it,I informed reception and again was met with a poor attitude with little acknowledgement .
We will not be going back and most certainly do not recommend this establishment

My husband and I sat outside in the rear terrace area which was a lovely suntrap. The service was good and the drinks reasonably priced. We also had breakfast here on the last morning of our holiday to avoid washing up and it was delicious - highly recommend the eggs benedict.

A stay here was one of a series of several; sadly this was the poorest in terms of value and facilities offered.
Superficially the room was attractively decorated but extremely thick dust and a lack of ease of use of sockets (particularly to boil a kettle) left us feeling quite resentful we paid what we did for the room when we had the experience we did.
The food was good and the staff generally friendly and helpful with the exception of one man who acted both as the manager and with complete indifference to the business I was bringing to it

We had a lovely superior room with a very comfortable bed and a perfectly adequate ensuite bathroom. The cooked breakfast is outstanding with the bacon, sausages, black pudding etc being supplied by the local butcher I believe. We had dinner on one of the evenings and chose steaks which we delicious. The staff were very friendly and eager to please. We had our dog with us and she was treated very well by all of the staff. There is no parking at the hotel but there is a long term public carpark no more than 5 mins walk away costing £1 for 24 hours.

Had a voucher for a deluxe dinner bed and breakfast breakaway so looked on available venues on buyagift website and we came across the white hart inn in winchcombe Gloucester. After booking over the phone I noticed there was no parking on site and nearest car park a few minutes walk away . We are both disabled so should have been advised of this before booking was accepted . Anyway the steps were also a problem for us although we managed even with a large heavy suitcase ! No help was offered by the staff to get to our room which also meant another 2 flight of stairs !
Managed seemed very abrupt when we arrived early just to our our bags inside and said the desk don’t open till 3 ! I knew that and just wanted to park our bags and then make our way to the car park .
Dinner was okay but prices expensive! We were told we could have anything on the menu up to the price of £25 ! We assumed we could have anything on the menu ! Had to keep asking what we entitled to as no info was forthcoming !
Cleanliness not great either . Shower tray dirty and not been cleaned as there was an opened bottle of shampoo left in cubicle ! The voucher costs £149.00 so it wasn’t cheap but the standard of room we got was I am afraid not up to a decent standard to warrant thst price ! Didn’t bother complaining cos only there for the one night (thanks heavens ) so didn’t see the point . Oh yes and to add insult to injury , I got a text to say “sorry we missed you but you forgot to pay !”
They didn’t apply the voucher to our room! I had to explain that we used a voucher for the booking and it was rectified but it made me feel like a criminal as I supposedly left without paying !
Wouldn’t bother with this place unless you don’t mind walking to park your car in a car park that is 5 minutes walk away ( let’s hope it don’t rain ) , dont mind loads of stairs , your not bothered about NOT being offered any help with your bags , you only spend £25 on your dinner or you will incur extra charges , oh and you like dogs !! Loads of dogs on the premises. It does advertise dog friendly to be fair but they were noisy . We had room 8 which overlooked the outside area and very noisy cos all the smokers congregated out there and we couldn’t close our window fully so we copped the tobacco smell as well !
As I says for the price we paid , personally I thought it was not worth it . There are plenty of other inns out there that are far better than this one and cheaper . Only saving grace was the area ! It’s stunning !

My wife and I stayed for one night with a cream tea, dinner and breakfast. The staff were friendly and helpful. We particularly appreciated the receptionist taking us and our case to our bedroom and a waitress offering to move us from the main bar area to a quieter room for dinner. The bedroom was well equipped, comfortable and spotlessly clean. There was a good choice of food at dinner and breakfast and all meals were of good quality. The property is well located for walks around the village and to Sudeley Castle.

Can't answer that due to the fact that I have only ever been in the public rooms on the ground floor, eg public and lounge bars and restaurant. The noise levels from the clientele have, to the best of my memory, never been excessive.
No spa at this hotel
Security measures are always advisable, but this is a very low crime area, there's plenty of parking in the town near to the Hart.
Sorry about the mud ! You're in rural Gloucestershire..............we like our mud, we grow food in it ! get some wellies !!!! back to security, common-sense measures, lock up, don't leave valuables in the car especially on view.
This question should be directed to The White Hart Inn.
Dogs were in the bar when we visited.. All very orderly no problem..... We like dogs
