This weekend was our 1st foray into 'New Normal' hotel accommodation. My partner and I were in room 5, the Superior Suite. The room was amazing! Giant spa bath which was bigger than most hot tubs, with integrated shower, mood lighting, a television above the bath, very modern sink and toilet, and all spotless!
The bed was a huge sleigh bed which was amazingly comfortable with beautiful furnishings. Social distancing was practiced with a well thought out breakfast routine, and the breakfast menu was amazingly decadent, offering a huge variety of options, all served by the loveliest lady. Best poached eggs ever!!!!!
Special thanks to Daniel who looked after all queries efficiently, and was extremely friendly and helpful.
Definitely visiting again!!!

I had to find accommodation at the last minute as our original booking elsewhere was cancelled on us two days before travel!
I had the pleasure of dealing with Ellie from the first phone call, and she was amazing! She was so professional and beyond helpful as she assisted with organising a taxi for us (again, the original one was cancelled as a different area). She also explained the area, gave us a map, and showed us where we were.
I have a lactose intolerance, and she specifically bought lactose free milk (can't do soya in tea!!)

The room itself was beautiful, so spacious, and a really comfortable bed. Spotlessly clean!
There was a fan in the room, which was perfect for cooling down the room.
The Garden Room Restaurant that is part of the hotel was fantastic, with great food, staff, and atmosphere. Great menu that caters for all and a good choice for breakfast and evening meal, if you don't want to venture out too far.
All in all, would 100% stay again.

It is not far from the pier, 35 min walk from the Spinnaker Tower. Breakfast is great, parking was also great. Staff was very helpful and nice. The room lovely, but don't take room 1 if you are a light sleeper. The matrass was to hard for me, mixed with people above I did not really sleep good.

Thank you for your review - we are pleased you liked the room and enjoyed breakfast with us. We are always happy to read positive comments about our lovely staff too - so thank you! I'm sorry to hear you found the mattress too hard (we use a pocket sprung medium firm mattress which suits the majority but we appreciate that no mattress type suits all). We are disappointed too that it sounds like some guests disrupted your stay - had we been aware we certainly would have managed this immediately. We hope to see you again in the future.

The room was 1st Class, Reception friendly and welcoming. However we experienced a hum/buzzing noise that stopped and started up again every 10 minutes. My husband and I couldn't sleep so at 1.30 in the evening tried to find somebody to help in the Hotel.
All doors were locked so I rang the night porter who was in another hotel that was part of the Mercer Collection. I was horrified to think we were in this Hotel with no staff.
I explained the situation - he had no other rooms and suggested the noise was from the kitchen underneath us caused by the fridges. I said we will not sleep tonight and hope this will be reflected in the price - he said he will inform the Manager in the morning. Morning came and at 7.30 we were disturbed again by the kitchen extractor fan attached on the outside wall of our room we felt we were about to take off - the TV had to be put on that loud that was painful to listen to.
We eventually spoke to the Manager who offered us another room for the second night but we refused on the fact we were on business and not slept the 1st night, tired and having to work we needed sleep so we can fully function for work the next day, and couldn't chance the same thing happening again.
Few days later we got an email - she charged us for the room that night but didn't for the second night as a gesture of good will. We didn't stay the second night and should have understood how exhausted we were, she also accused me of being a light sleeper as I brought my own ear plugs - these ear plugs were fetched out of the car in the early hours of the morning because my husband uses them for his work- they never had anybody else complain in 10 years and they are not sure where the noise came from, although we were told it could be from the kitchen fridges below which we didn't know were there. The porter should have come to investigate that evening as it could have been something really serious, but he didn't, could this be because other people have complained before and he didn't want to waist his time??
We wont use them again they are full of excuses.

There are not really the words to respond to this catalogue of falsehoods and untruths. The experience described below is so far away from the actual facts of what happened we are at a loss as to where to begin. Your husband selected a ground floor room located next to the hotel's front door for you to stay in - despite you stating you were a light sleeper who had to carry ear plugs and even used them at home - not what is written below. On departure you explained you had even had this happen at another hotel to you and been disturbed all night prompting you to leave just as was the case here. The implication that you were locked in the hotel overnight with no staff around is quite incredible. We only can hope sensible readers will see this 1 star review (when the guest has never ever reviewed a hotel before...) for what it is, a collection of false statements designed to illicit further money from the hotel. It is always very sad to read a review like this for both management and staff and we hope it will not deter our valued guests from visiting us in the future. Regards The Clarence

What a treat!

We had a working weekend but staying at The Clarence made it feel more like a holiday. Decorated with great style and taste the attention to detail in all aspects of our stay was excellent. The breakfast was especially good. Well presented with good quality produce well cooked. Our hosts were friendly, helpful and interested in hearing about our stay. We will go back in April.

My husband and I (both of mature years but not yet in our dotage!) have just returned from a two night stay at the Clarence. Having stayed there previously and found it to be excellent, we had no qualms about about our return visit. As before, the welcome was first class. We were shown to our room (no. 7) which was very nice but there was an overpowering damp smell. A plug-in air freshener was on so the hotel staff were obviously aware of the smell. We decided not to make a fuss as we were told that the hotel was fully booked.
The next evening, however, after having been out for the whole day, we were "welcomed" with the following note: "Dear Guest, Whilst servicing your room, it came to our attention that you have a bottle of red wine in your room. Please can I ask that you are extra cautious as damages to the hotel must be paid for. Many thanks for your co-operation."
Both my husband and I felt like two naughty children being chastised for having something we shouldn't!! In fact, we had brought the wine to take to our Son's house! What would happen if we had ordered red wine on room service - would we have received a verbal warning or a Red Card?
I am sorry, but you do not treat paying guests this way. I am afraid the Clarence has just lost two customers.

Spent the night here on my wedding night (a couple of years back), and it was just what we needed after a busy day!

Arrived very late (past midnight), but were still greeted by a member of staff, who had a drink ready for us - Perfect!
After a quick tour of our room, he left us to get settled.

Had a fantastic nights sleep, which was very comfortable and quiet!
We were in the Wild At Heart room, which is on the ground floor (first door on the left as you go in the entrance). Though it was on the ground floor, at the front of the building, it was very quiet!

One of the best things about this room though, is the bath!
It is in the bedroom, as is sunken into the floor! So you have to walk down into it - amazing! It also has a little TV embedded in the wall / tiles, so you can lay on the bath and watch a film! Never seen anything like it - pure luxury!
There is then a small WC in room with toilet facilities etc.

Went to have breakfast in the morning, and it was fantastic!! Lovely fresh, quality sausages from Buckwells (best butchers in Portsmouth by the way!). Eggs, tomatoes, toast, fruit, cereals, the works!

We then had a long conversation with a lovely lady who worked there, and she was a treat! We were asking about other rooms, and she showed us around! So we had an insight into all the other rooms available, and this place really is breathtaking! One of the rooms had a spa bath so big, it was made for two!

Though this place may be a little pricey, they really do deliver! Everything about this place is quality, and it was a real treat to stay here! I just thank them for making our stay so memorable.

I must also mention one quick thing - I am in a same sex marriage, and there was no discrimination at all!
Sometimes it can be hard to find a 'gay friendly' hotel, but there was no problem here at all. They were so welcoming, and really treated us like royalty!

Thanks again!

Just one road back from the seafront you find this little gem. The room we stayed in had a double sized jacuzzi and was well appointed. The staff are faultless and friendly. It was very relaxing and a very good breakfast was served. My wife and I thought it was a brilliant place to stay if down Portsmouth way and I would definitely use it without hesitation.

We stayed for four nights in June in Room 8 at the top of the house - no lift but not too many stairs.

The room was not large but had been tastefully done up. It lacked drawer space and the low sofa under the window did not provide comfortable seating. We missed a couple of easy chairs to relax in.

The en-suite bathroom was up a short flight of stairs, really under the eaves of the building. The bathroom had been renovated fairly recently and had a super walk-in shower. Unfortunately, because of the slope of the eaves the mirror above the sinks was impossibly low. The only way I could shave was by crouching down at a most uncomfortable angle. Another oddity was that the sink plugs were fixed in the open position. We were told that this was because the sinks had no overflow arrangement. Anyway, an inconvenient and not a very environmentally friendly arrangement as taps had to be left running while shaving/washing etc.

The breakfast menu provided a good choice and the food was excellent. The first night we ate in the hotel group's restaurant (The Kitchen) and had an excellent meal.

The staff were unfailingly helpful and friendly.

Our biggest disappointment was the location of the hotel. Whilst close to the sea front, it is positioned on (in our opinion) a rather dingy back road and fronts onto a scruffy block of council flats. Our room had one window that looked out at the back onto the back gardens of the houses behind and had a view of a rusty corrugated iron roof and a partially demolished wooden garden shed.

Is this really the #1 Trip Advisor hotel in Portsmouth? We wonder. Certainly, for the money we spent, we have had superior accommodation in central London four star hotels.

Thank you for your review, particularly your kind comments about our lovely staff and our restaurant The Kitchen located just minutes away. The bathroom was infact installed 10 years ago, despite it's immaculate appearance it is not new and was installed by the previous owners. As I believe was explained at the hotel prior to your review being left we will be updating certain rooms but this is extensive refurbishment which cannot take place overnight. The bathroom is quirky but is a lovely feature to the room being up a small flight of stairs on a mezzanine level. We appreciate your comments about seating and will certainly look at altering the bench to armchairs. We are sorry you disliked the location of the hotel. It is very clear prior to booking that the hotel is in a residential area. The flats in question are not council flats but a Luxury Seafront Apartment block - looking from the back perhaps this was not clear. The housing is large Victorian family homes with gardens and private garage areas in a lovely part of Southsea. We don't, and never have, professed to having great views and the hotel has always been in the same location so feel it unfair to be marked down on something which is clear from pre booking stage. The hotel, whilst in a residential road, is just 2 minutes walk from the seafront and 7 minutes walk to central Southsea shops and restaurants. We are very proud to be rated on Tripadvisor as Portsmouth's Number 1 hotel. This doesn't mean we are everyone's favourite but we have been rated us such by the 878 reviewers before hand. We are sorry you only could rate the hotel average but we certainly appreciate your comments and feedback and hope you enjoyed the attractions Portsmouth has to offer. If you are in the area again do contact us and we would be glad to offer a different room to try or perhaps one of other hotels.
