Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My second experience of the Village Hotel 'Cube', but my first of the Leisure facilities. Who thought it a good idea to put a set of stairs between a swimming pool and the changing rooms. Accidents waiting to happen. Whilst on the subject of the pool, too cold and not big enough

I work in Portsmouth from time to time and book my own travel, as such I'm always keen on cost/quality/location. The booking through to check in was nice/easy/straight forward, the room was pretty much what I was expecting - a little smaller than a big chain, but a few nice touches. I ate in the evening - a solid 9/10 for the food, great quality, prompt and quite reasonably priced (with Corona on tap). I used the pool in the morning - nice/clean facilities and not at all busy. The last steps are where we fell down; When showering in the room I noted a small amount of black mould on the roof, alongside an extractor fan that sounded like it was lifted from a Tornado jet. I flicked the news on to notice the remote was so filthy (only word I can describe), the sticky dust and grime laden buttons stuck to my hand. Last but no means least - Breakfast. Bit of a shocker here. The great bacon I had on a burger was long gone, replaced by some very cheap, fatty, poorly cooked substitute. Sausage were anaemic and about 80% rusk (I exaggerate for effect). Beans and eggs were Ok but I was already put off the hot plates. Continental options were extremely limited, I had a very small croissant and a sugar waffle. Coffee was Ok, a little bitter but by no means bad. Overall - I've still given a 4* rating as there is a lot to like, I would probably stay again but unfortunately not swiftly as these things need addressing - I did raise them in the nicest possible way with the staff who were extremely apologetic and helpful, offering a Starbucks on the house (not my favourite). Again worth noting - the staff were great, hotel pretty good, some attention to detail and quality and this would be 5* all round.

The receptionist was so helpful, The rooms are great, food and wine lovely. I stayed in an accessible room and the only point I would make is that disabled people have toiletries too and shelves to put them on near the shower and the sink (which could be bigger) would be nice to have and maybe the tea and coffee facilities a bit easier to get to if in a wheelchair.

We had a really enjoyable stay. We were one of the rare couples who did not arrive here by car! It's a 16 minute walk to/from Cosham station. That route passes a McDonald's, where we nipped in to grab a coffee. The hotel is in a small town called Cosham, with a 70 minute walk to reach the start of the shops of Portsmouth's Commercial Road (the high street). We enjoyed using all the leisure club: a 20 metre pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room as well as a spacious gym. The room's "press to frost" button on the glass dividing wall between bedroom and bathroom is a silly gimmick. It would be better to be permanently frosted, as who wants to be looking through the glass divider at a toilet cistern? The shower was very powerful, clean and wonderfully refreshing. The TV in the room is comically large, so ensure you switch to an HD channel (number 101 and upwards) to avoid the pixelation of the standard channels. We slept amazingly well. Sure, we were tired from swimming and walking – but it is still a fact that the mattress and bedding quality was exceptional. Dinner in the sports bar was of reasonable quality – I can cook better chips myself! In contrast, the cooked breakfast buffet was excellent. Some niggles (1): soon after the pool closed on Friday evening, all the staff abandoned the leisure club reception desk. Such a process defines logic as a leisure club staff member had earlier taken my room key card in exchange for a towel. Now, I was without a room key card. After some hassle, a hotel staff member was tracked down. Please fix your process! Some niggles (2): there is a self-service check-in touchscreen for typing surname, date of stay, etc. The screen disturbingly states "booking not found". Staff later stated that bookings that include a voucher for a credit towards an evening meal would always have that error message, because staff need to manually hand over such a voucher. Well, Village Hotels' IT supplier should be embarrassed – an on-screen message should be added to state "speak to a staff member to collect your meal voucher and handle your check-in" as the current (un)welcome experience involves being worryingly confronted with the idea that you don't have ANY booking!

Dear christopher_1707, Thank you for taking the time to detail your feedback. I am pleased to see that overall you enjoyed your stay with us and managed to make use of the leisure facilities. I will certainly highlight your comments with the Leisure Club Manager regarding the reception desk so we can ensure that this does not happen in the future. We have contacted our IT team who will be altering our kiosk check in screens as you have suggested. This will make the self check in experience more seamless for our guests going forward. I hope that the 'niggles' you have mentioned have not put you off of staying with us again in the future. Kind regards, Jimmy

Where do I start to write this review. Throughout our stay and the experience we had before hand was exemplary. Firstly, we booked our Portsmouth Mini Break under The Village Club’s “Black Friday” offer in November. The offer meant we could not amend our booking. Unfortunately, due to a family commitment which arose, we were not going to able to stay the Thursday night (15 February - our original first night) But after writing an email to the hotel to say we realised that we lost that night, Beth (in Reception) came back and offered to amend (free of charge) our booking to Friday 16 February and going back Monday (instead of Sunday as originally planned). This was perfect as we are both semi-retired! When we arrived at the hotel around 3pm on the Friday, we were greeted by Charlotte who was both welcoming and a smile on her face. She explained the hotel’s arrangements, meal/gym times etc. We were given Room 211 which was spotless and well appointed. The next morning, we experienced a minor problem with the spring plug on our hand basin. I used the QR code to report the issue. Within 15 minutes, a cleaner (later we discovered to be Charlotte’s mother who also works in the hotel), knocked on our door to see what the issue was and said she would ensure it was reported to Maintenance when they came in at 9am. The spring basin plug was later replaced sometime during the day. What excellent service! Each time we have been down to breakfast, we have been greeted by friendly and happy staff. Selection of food has been excellent and cooked food has been hot. Special request for fried eggs has been met with no problems etc. We have eaten in the hotel’s Grill and Bar each of our three night’s and food has been tasty, hot and a good varied menu. Special mentions for Callum and Joe who have been both friendly, helpful and to be honest seem to work “their socks off” to ensure things work efficiently and well for all customers. Tables are cleared quickly and left clean for the next customers to take. This afternoon (Sunday), Joe booked us in advance for Sunday Roast Lunch at 4pm (partner had the turkey and I had the beef) - he even reserved us a table. We both throughly enjoyed the roast which, I understand, is a new introductory menu item for Sundays. The add-on crumble was also lovely - more fruit than crumble which in many establishments is the other way round. I used the pool, sauna and steam room yesterday evening and it everything was clean and a great attraction. Changing room and showers were in good order. So thank you The Village Portsmouth for a great experience and stay! This is now the fourth Village experience we have had (I am a member of The Village Gym in Bristol) and I can say you can’t fault them for value for money and friendliness as well as a good stay.

Just a review for Kevin on reception- what a customer service superstar! We were visiting the area last minute due to illness in the family and although this hotel were unable to accommodate us, Kevin went out of his way to source us a room at different establishment - after 6 full hotels, his service stood out and provided welcome relief at the end of very long day.

Neither great nor terrible in terms of the rooms, it's just a room to sleep in but the pillows are awful, one is like a little sofa cushion and the duvet is way to big for the cover so you end up with lots of sheets all snagging on you and a frustrating sleep experience. Ordered food, expensive and cold the first time round and when redelivered was still expensive, cools and overcooked. Staff did nothing to rectify despite seeing we had left 3/4 of the second attempt.
