Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A real sense of care and pride went into this Sunday dinner. Excellent service and a great range of beers and wines. I cannot express how much value for money this was as well. Just old fashioned good service and food done the way it is supposed to be.

We have stayed before and it was lovely to recieve such a warm welcome back and for our room to be ready when we arrived earlier than the check in. Rooms are snug but comfortable and i got a good night sleep. The room was clean and everything we needed. Breakfast was as good as rememberred. Location couldn't be better for the Historic Dockyeard, Gun Wharf Keys and Portsmouth Harbour Railway Station. The only thing that disappointed me was we were visiting on a night they don't serve food in the evening, as I still dream about the food we had last time! :D

The rooms were spotless and the house keeping team visited your room daily. I have to say it was probably one of the best places I have stayed in the bed was comfy the bathroom and shower was very good. The barstaff and kitchen staff are very good and always give you a good welcome when you arrive to check in or when you return. Darren the bar man will have you in stiches the chef is very accommodating with your orders. So thank you very much all at the George hopefully see you again soon

Popped in for a couple of drinks in the afternoon and had a look at the menu which had a good selection of vegetarian options for my wife. So decided to return later for food. I had steak and chips with a side of beer battered onion rings and my wife had a vegetable tart with chips and side salad both cooked perfectly and tasted lovely. Bar staff nice and friendly waitress and chef friendly really enjoyed our time here. Nice surroundings with lots of historic character.

Had a great stay at this hotel. Staff were lovely and friendly, Bed was comfy and room more than adequate. Bar and restaurant area lovely too with the feature of a well in the middle. I liked the fact that the building dates back to the 1700 s and various pictures on the wall made for an interesting read. Food was excellent and I would thoroughly recommend 👌

The room was spacious and clean. It was made up for two, even though I was a single traveller (double everything). It was very close to points of interest (central) but surprisingly quiet. Downstairs is a pub (decent prices and excellent staff). The breakfast was amazing, so good I photographed it!! I arrived the night of a home Pompey match so it took a few minutes to check in. It was excellent value for money 20% cheaper the Holiday Inn. The only downside was the parking, which was paid, but only 1 minutes walk away and there was a discount voucher from the hotel.

Such a great experience! To me the thought of staying at an inn built in the late1700s was too much to resist. Sure you give up some of the “amenities” of a modern place but it’s a good trade. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The George has a quaint charm that shouldn’t be missed. Our room was very clean and comfortable. The included breakfast is very good. For us a single plate was more than enough for two. Other meals we ate there were equally tasty. If you’re diving into the history of Portsmouth staying at The George really completes it.

Great welcome, friendly staff in a cracking location. Very reasonably priced compared to nearby 'chain' hotels.... plus a great full English breakie included... What is not to like about The George. Thank you Carryanne and your team for looking after me.

Stayed at The George last week. A clean friendly historic pub and hotel. Good food with generous portions, good ales and wines. Rooms are clean and well appointed. Staff and locals friendly. Very reasonably priced too! Easy access to the city, Historic Dockyard and Gunwharf shopping Ctr. If you are visiting Portsmouth for a few days, I recommend a stay here. We are back again next month!
