This is a good hotel in a great location; right next to Gunwarf Quays and the Historic Dockyard.

The staff are very friendly and the breakfast was good- they have a cooked full English/vegetarian option & you can help yourself to continental items.

We stayed in the Victory Sweet and the room was v spacious.

Here’s where there can be some improvement:

The view would’ve been Stunning if it wasn’t for the fact that the window was very mucky (see picture). I tried to clean it myself but it became clear that it was a build up of moist within the double glazing. I’m not sure what the solution is (as the double glazing made it nice and quiet) but if there was an option to open the inside of the window to clean this, it would DEFINITELY be worth the investment.

There were a few other things: Water was left in kettle, there was no toilet paper in the bathroom (we had to request this) and some of the room items needed some TLC (i.e. one of the side mirrors in the makeup station was dislodged, also a random mirror on the side of the bed which appeared to be an incomplete spare part).

Dinner overall was good value, but far too much cream in the Eton Mess (I love cream but way, way too much with not enough meringue in proportion to size). I also personally felt bacon was unnecessary in Caesar salad starter when there was already fish, chicken and croutons!

I would definitely recommend staying here but I feel these issues should be addressed.

Nice stay. Had 4 nights in the superior room with view. However the view at front is facing the bus station, could do with net curtains! Air con worked but gurgled a little, the windows do open but as opposite but station and on Main road can be a little noisy. Breakfast was ok, either full English or ‘continental’ which was basically cereal, toast and pain au chocolate, yoghurt. Fresh coffee and juices. Location, tho on main road is 5 min walk to dockyard, 5 min walk to outlet shops and harbour. Train station took us 25 min walk and visited Shanklin chine , (don’t waste your money going in there.) staff helpful. Overall a nice stay. Does have free parking to the left of the building. You can borrow hair dry, iron and ironing board apparently but I didn’t use this service. Toiletries are in bathroom in the small bottles and tea n coffee is in room

Visited the Kepples Head for 4 nights. The location is fantastic and very handy for the Naval Dockyard, ferry to the Isle of Wight, Portsmouth harbour rail station and Gunwharf Quay which has good quality shops and restaurants. I had continental breakfast at the hotel which is good value for money at £7.95, there is also a full English breakfast available for £2 more. The room is a bit tired with old furniture and the bed is too small. You can also hear the trains running although this did not bother me as they don’t run all night. On the Saturday night there was a private party on in the basement and I could here the music going on after midnight and I was on the 3rd floor. Housekeeping is atrocious as they did not replace the shower gel or bottled water. Luckily i had gel with me. I left the empty gel containers in the shower and they were still there when I left which shows the shower was never cleaned. One day they didn’t even enter the room. I complained to reception twice but they weren’t interested. When i checked out I mentioned housekeeping again and the receptionist said they would contact me via email about my complaint which they haven’t done. Would I stay again …no. There are a couple of well known chain hotels nearby that are consistent in there customer care

Stayed for 2 nights at the hotel and were delighted with it. Under new ownership and completely refurbished and decorated (many of the photos on this site are very out of date) We booked a small double bedroom but it was comfortable, had every thing you would expect, a fabulous bathroom and everything was spotlessly clean. All the staff we met, reception, bar and breakfast were well trained, friendly, helpful and efficient. We very much appreciated the free parking and perfect location of the hotel - half way between the Gunwharf Quay with fab shops / restaurants and the Historic Dockyard. Breakfast was good, quickly served and hot. Would thoroughly recommend.

This is the first time that we have stayed here since it has been refurbished. Check in was smooth and we were greeted by a friendly and knowledgable member of staff, Liam I believe.

We had room 22, this room was big and airy and extremely clean. The view was of the warrior and the spinnaker tower so we couldn’t have been much closer to the dockyard if we tried. The room had tea/coffee/hot chocolate facilities and bottled water. The bathroom had ample towels as well as shampoo, soap and shower gel, I don’t normally use the shampoo but this one was lovely.

We had dinner booked both evenings of our stay, I have to admit that we were slightly worried as it was £20 per head for three course. How wrong were we! The food was delicious, I had mussels to start, my son had the chorizo and king prawn gnocchi and my husband had the mackerel. Mains, two of us had the beer battered fish and chips and my husband had the pork. Presentation was excellent along with the taste. My husband had four desserts so they must have been good!

Breakfast was included, we opted for the full English which was cooked lovely. The only thing I would have liked to have seen was more choice of cereal.

The bar had a good stock of different spirits, some local to the area so it was nice to try something different.

The staff were great throughout, Tring is just adorable and helpful, Liam is very professional and happy. Heidi (I think that is her name) served us at dinner on the second night and was very cheerful. We were checked out by yet another staff member (didn’t get her name) this morning and she was very helpful and again, cheerful.

Would we return? Absolutely, we have already booked to return in November.

Positives:
Great staff
Perfectly located for the historical dockyard
Free parking
Breakfast included
Tasty food
Spacious rooms
Clean throughout

Negatives:
Um, more choice of cereal? I really can’t think of any negatives

We are looking forward to returning.

Having booked we almost cancelled due to so many poor reviews about the rooms, we checked with the hotel directly who confirmed all the rooms have been updated.
We had front view room which was spacious and clean with a really nice modern bathroom.
The cooked English breakfast which had a vegetarian option was very nice and freshly cooked to order.
The staff were friendly and the free car parking was a real bonus.
If you're looking for a nice, reasonably priced hotel in a very good location we would recommend it.

Stayed for a couple of nights on a short break to Portsmouth.
Warm welcome upon arrival and throughout our stay we found all staff to be very friendly.
Family room was far bigger than expected and was well equipped, clean and had a great view of the Spinnaker Tower and HMS Warrior.
Breakfast was good value and served quickly.
Location of the hotel is ideal for visiting Old Portsmouth, the dockyard and Gun Wharf as all are within walking distance.
There is a small car park but if you can’t get in there, just speak to reception and permits are available for parking nearby.
Despite being opposite the railway station we found the room to be quiet and enjoyed a good night’s sleep.
All in all ….. good value for money and would recommend

Stayed in the Keppels head hotel for four nights. The breakfasts were hot and plentiful with a good choice, we had an evening meal in the restaurant which was fantastic highly recommended !! the room was airy and the bed was very very comfortable, there is a bar downstairs which was handy after a day walking around the Docklands ! Location was fantastic, you park your car And then everything is on your doorstep literally minutes walk away ! the Gosport Ferry, the historical Docklands, shops and restaurants. Perfect

Perfect location for gun wharf shopping complex and historical dockyard, with the front of hotel over looking sea and attractions. Free parking to side of hotel which is always a bonus and so convenient, We had a small double at rear of hotel, which was spotless, bed was little firm for us, but that’s personal choice. We booked half board, which consisted of full English breakfast and the usual cereals, toast etc. And evening meal which was superb, not a huge choice but what was on the menu was delicious, with a special mention of the in house ice cream, best ice cream that I have ever tasted absolutely fabulous. Also has nice bar and lounge for evening cocktails , will definitely be booking again. Ps staff were brilliant to.

Me and a few friends went for dinner after hearing about the recent takeover. We were greeted by a lovely receptionist who showed us to our table. The waiter who served us was very helpful and attentive. We ordered a selection of starters including pate, soup and confit duck which we could not fault. Our mains were equally as amazing - with beautifully cooked steaks, pork belly and a mushroom parpadelle. Deserts followed with an amazingly presented cheese board and some of the nicest homemade ice cream in a brandy snap basket. Full compliments to the chef who cooked us an amazing meal - very well priced as well! Will be sure to visit again :)

Hi - The ground floor houses our restaurant and The Nelson Bar - all rooms are on the first floor and above. There is a lift available to all floors - there are 3 small steps up to the lift however

Hi - The hotel has been under new ownership for several months and i can confirm that the new owners have indeed invested heavily in a refurbishment of all areas of the hotel.

Hi could you tell me where and how this free parking works ? Thanks
Portsmouth, United Kingdom
The car park is situated 25 yards from the entrance to the property. It is directly next door to our sister property The Lady Hamilton Public House. You simply park up and come to reception to give us your registration details and we give you a parking permit to display in your windscreen - the car park is also secure, with the night porter locking it between 2300-0700 every day
Portsmouth, United Kingdom
No, this is not correct - all of our rooms are no smoking at the time of posting
Portsmouth, United Kingdom
We never received a government grant - we are under new ownership though, and the new owners have invested their own money into the refurbishment of the hotel from top to bottom!
