The original Queens Hotel was known as Southsea House and was built by the architect Augustus Livesay in 1861. It was then a large private house owned by Sir John and Lady Morris. The house was situated in an almost identical position to the front half of the existing hotel but was at that time surrounded by woodland – Stone Woods – and the Royal Albert Yacht Club. In 1865, it was transformed into one of the first hotels in Southsea by William Kemp Junior and became known as The Queens Hotel. In 1902, plans for a new hotel were submitted by the owner, G. H. King, after a fire sadly swept through the original building the year before. Designed by architect T. W. Cutler in 1903, the new hotel was rebuilt in the Edwardian baroque style in brown terracotta. This splendid, grade II listed building still stands today boasting outstanding views across the Solent and Southsea Common.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Excellent Sunday lunch with wines. The restaurant was very busy, reflecting the quality of food provided by the kitchen. We look forward to our return. Many thanks to Alfredo, Frankie, Francisco and Daniel for their attention and service.

We booked a spur of a moment stay aa the original hotel we wanted to stay at got fully booked. Conveniently located at Portsmouth seafront either free parking, the hitel is is a magnificent building and the interior is tastefully furbished to high standard. We had a small room but all sufficient and comfortable and took dinner at the restaurant. The food was really tasty and beautifully presented! The duty manager Sobhi looked after us amazingly and with a smile! Definitely an unexpected gem! Would stay again!

I have just come home from a very relaxing time at the Queens Hotel. From arrival to leaving. The receptionist Kirsten could not of been more helpful on arrival booking in our car at the car park to giving us extra milk for tea ☕ in our room to making our checkout as smooth as possible. I am gluten free and the food choice was excellent only a couple of things I couldn't have in each section. My husband and I had the Belly pork for main course it was perfectly cooked. Our waitress Megan was very attentive and ensured I had gluten free choices. She was working at the dinner and at breakfast she was there with her smile and friendly welcome. I was impressed she was so bright after her late finish and early start. The Breakfast did not disappoint excellent choice and plenty of it. We were able to take advantage of the special offer of the winter Sunday booking making this extra special having a superior room with a seaview and a balcony. The room was immaculately clean and spacious with a refrigerator. We will definitely be returning.

I needed somewhere to stay for 1 night and it turned out to be a home football match date so where I usually stay was charging over 4 times the price to normal. I booked a standard single room at Queens as it was cheaper and the hotel itself is very nice - slightly dated once you're out of the main lobby but it is an old hotel. The non-renovated standard rooms do need a lick of paint as the walls are a little marked and scuffed but overall a nice, comfortable room. Bed was very comfy, earplugs were provided but didn't feel I needed them. Didn't have breakfast though as was £18!! Seems a bit excessive for eggs on toast to me - even porridge was £18?! If you go in the evening you can have burger and fries for £17 so not sure where they're getting their breakfast prices from.

Lovely little gem. If you manage to have dinner in the restaurant, go for the Beef Wellington. Best I've ever had! Staff attentive, polite and generally extremely good. Clean rooms with good view of the sea. Room a little on the small side, but hey, it's only to sleep at! All in all thoroughly recommend. Will stay again.

Lovely hotel in a great location for Ferry's and hovercraft. I was having to travel to IOW and hate getting stuck in the town centre, getting into the right lanes. Here, literally 10min drive no traffic jams straight to port. Has a lovely Green in front opposite the beach. Great walks with the dog and close to shopping centre. The first room was a small single and it was extremely small, but moved due to being next to the hall door. Second room was more spacious. Good shower, nice and clean room, lovely and warm. Nice decor. The staff was very nice and helpful. I would recommend staying here and I will defo stay here again.

Went to afternoon tea with my family for Mother’s Day, we were jammed into a corner with a large table behind us my elderly mother had to try to make room for the table behind us, the rest of the large restaurant was virtually empty, the hotel did that for their own convenience not ours

A beautiful hotel with wonderful features, delicious food and attentive staff. Also in a great location near the seafront. The beds were comfortable and the rooms had added extras like tasty biscuits, shower caps and ear plugs. I will definitely visit again and recommend to others.
