The Holiday Inn Portsmouth An IHG hotel offers a convenient location praised by many guests for its proximity to local attractions, despite occasional inconvenience from nearby roadworks. However, some travelers have voiced disappointment with the amenities, such as the non-functional pool and outdated spa facilities. Opinions on the hotel's atmosphere are divided, with updated public spaces contrasting sharply with rooms that often appear tired and in need of rejuvenation. Cleanliness is generally acceptable, though certain areas could use more attention. Service has been a point of contention, with guests facing slow responses and staffing issues, leading to questions about the value for the price paid.

Visit about once a year due to proximity to gunwharf and sea front. Great location. Slightly disappointed on this occasion. Booked originally for 2 nights and last minute changed to 3. Had to change room but this was due to our late change. Confusion at booking in so quite a wait. Think a bit confusing that advertise free parking but 5 pound per night charge. First room had no kettle and only one pillow but these were provided on request. Didn't notice till later but no glasses in bathroom either. Second room was equipped but bathroom bin was dirty and skirting board in bedroom quite decayed. Bedroom furniture badly scratched. Understand restricted use of swimming pool due to covid but non residents were using so hard to judge when best to visit would be good to have some residents only times when more chance of being able to use. Breakfast was obviously different due to covid but only added one day partly due to quality but also due to other guests not following a one way system so quite a lot of movement which gave a degree of nervousness. Sanitiser by lift in ground floor empty for two days but carried my own to use. Staff polite and professional. Room wasn't cleaned during stay but we were asked if needed any towels would have been nice to be offered replacement tea and coffee. Taking into account difficult times still think few areas where improvements could be made. Think in the current climate when one does go away want to be sure that all hygiene standards possible in place.

we only stayed here for one night but were pleasantly surprised with how good it was. As first timers to Holiday Inns it was better than we had been expecting. There was parking outside hotel and had that been full plenty of spaces on roads round hotel. Check in was friendly and welcoming. We had a room on 6th floor. Room wasn’t massive but adequate for our needs and spotlessly clean. Slight criticism is that there are no drawers in room but plenty hanging space. Could do with a hook to hang coats on either on side of wardrobe or behind door on wall Luggage rack, armchair, chair at desk, fridge, etc Tea/coffee facilities as you would expect.. Safe was on floor at bottom of wardrobe as you would expect but keypad and door were sideways facing not to the front so if you wanted to use would have had to get down on your hands and knees with your phone to see what you were doing. Bathroom small but functional. Shelf Space by basin to put your wash-bag on had been used to put complimentary toiletries, tissue box, flannels so we just took all these off and put in bottom of wardrobe. Complimentary robes were good And fitted. Didn’t use slippers. Bed was very comfortable slept really well. Nice to have a window that you could open.
Breakfast was very good with plenty of choice both hot and cold choices. Plenty of tables. Swimming pool is added bonus. Nice touch by staff was little message on paper and pen provided saying enjoy your stay. All in all very impressed and would definitely recommend. All staff we spoke to were friendly and helpful.

I booked a family room here as a treat for my kids as the holidays are nearly over!!! Yippee
I had some reward points so used that and cash to pay
This time there were plenty of parking spaces so good start
Reception were efficient and asked the children what complimentary treat they would like :-) ice cream, hot choco or soft drink so that was very nice and unexpected.
The family room was a good size 1. Double bed,1 double pullout and 1 single bed brilliant sheets and pillows were as usual great.
The bathroom was small but ok for the 4 of us.
We went to the pool which is about average for a hotel but the kids loved it. The changing room was quite cramped if there was a few people in there. It was serviceable though.
I had a great nights sleep but unfortunately due to me “snoring “ nobody else did which I don’t believe
Breakfast is buffet style with plenty to choose from , one or two things here was that I think the orange juice is watered down , and there was a washing up smell on the mushrooms but the rest was lovely.
Check out was smooth and efficient
Apart from no biscuits in the room for our cup of tea all was well

I visited the Holiday Inn at Portsmouth during the second week of the Easter holidays, I booked two rooms and had the stop and dine option, the two room were located on the same floor, the bathroom and bedroom was clean and looked like it had recently been refurbished. The Holiday Inn has a very good swimming pool with a Sauna, Steam Room and Jacuzzi , once again the facilities are clean and well maintained and my family enjoyed the experience. The Stay and Dine Option is very good value as breakfast is a real feast of cooked food and a continental option, the evening meal also offered a good menu and super service. The location of the hotel is excellent for access to the Isle Wight Hovercraft and the seafront, the retail park formally known as HMS Vernon is also within walking distance. We went to Portsmouth Theatre Royal and a taxi cost less than £5. car parking on site can be difficult but options for road parking are available, once parked up I did not move the car for the three days we stopped in the hotel . We would revisit this hotel again as we really enjoyed experience.

Just returned from a two night stay.No problem parking in the hotel car park charged at £5.00 for each overnight parking.

Very helpful reception staff especialy Roberta who always greated us with a smile.

Lovely double room with a sea view watching the ferries coming in and out.
Fridge and tea making facilities. the room and bathroom were very clean.
In all the staff are a credit to the hotel management.

We went out for meals and did not eat in the hotel for no other reason as we enjoy going out to eat.
The pool is open and we had no problem in booking a slot for lane swimming in the heated pool.
We went on a harbour boat trip with an interesting commentry on all the Royal Navy ships around the harbour including the two aircraft carriers one of which was due to go out to the USA on trials.
The hotel is in a good location only a short stroll to Gunwharf Quays with a large selection of shops and eating places,

This was a very short notice request for a two night business stay on a Thursday and Friday night. The staff could not have been more helpful especially arriving late on the Thursday when parking was at a premium. They recognised that I was a trusted member of the rewards scheme and did everything possible to facilitate my stay and to accommodate my requirements. The reception staff, specifically Olivia was particularly efficient on booking in. Breakfast both days was exceptional and I noted the same Chef managed both the Friday and Saturday mornings. food that had been on the hot plate for a long time was removed and replaced, something I observed both days. The Chef also offered to cook specific to order if required. On check out my colleague and I were managed by Olivia and Maria during a hectic Saturday morning. Overall the hotel was excellent and in a prime location for my business and social needs. The staff recommended a couple of local restaurants and locations to visit on both Thursday and Friday nights. Excellent service and thank you to the staff for making my stay so comfortable.

Great location near Southsea front with good weather as well we enjoyed the local area . Limited car parking for the size of the hotel (we were lucky) and charged £5 for the privilege.

Room on the 6th floor was clean, quiet and comfortable with a decent view of Spinnaker Tower - rooms of the front however would have a better view of the seafront. Bathroom small, especially as this was an Executive room.

Leisure facilities were good - pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. Not the largest but not overcrowded whilst we were there.

Bar service was slow with no Stella glasses, no gin glasses and gin served without garnish being offered. Expensive drinks to which a service charge was automatically added!

Restaurant evening service severely hampered by having to order via electric devices. These were not user friendly (could only order wine by glass) taking much longer to complete than simply having the staff stood 5 feet away actually taking the order. These devices could work in McDonald's but not in a restaurant of a supposed high quality hotel charging suitably high prices.

Breakfast had an excellent choice and food generally good. Too few staff clearing used tables meaning significant queues built even though there were tables in theory free.

Despite my bar and restaurant quibbles this was still a good stay - just that by sorting out the food and beverage side it could have been even better.

We had booked 4 nights at Holiday Inn Portsmouth having previously stayed there over the past few years. Things did not start well when we found a large air conditioning unit balanced on a chair. Reception were not interested so we manhandled it into the corridor where it remained for a few days. Dumbing down was obvious that evening in the dining room and bar. Tablets as found in fast food outlets were on each table and ordering was purely by this means. There was no opportunity to ask questions about the menu. The drinks ordering was by the same means. The range on offer was very poor, but worst of all there was no description or country of origin. I went to the bar and the person serving had no idea about the wines even though she was selling them. In the end she put the bottles on the counter for me to work it out. My wife ordered a steak sandwich. When it came it comprised 2 slices of basic white sliced bread, some brownish ‘mess’ and a piece of gristle and fat with a little meat. We asked to speak to the Manager who was in the dining room. We had to see two other members of staff before he deigned to come to talk to us. He agreed the food was unacceptable, but in respect of the tablets patronisingly said young people preferred to use them for ordering. Non of the dining room staff did anything about children at a wedding who played hide and seek in the room while we and others were eating.
The cleaning staff told us that most long stay guests did not like their rooms cleaned. We asked that ours was done. There was a perfunctory clean and we were punished by not getting biscuits on our hospitality tray for the remaining 3 days. The hotel compared badly to the 2 Premier Inns we stayed en -route and back from Portsmouth. On the plus side the breakfasts were very good.

We stayed at the end of last week, checking out on the Saturday of the Bank Holiday. Our family room was just ideal for 2 adults and 2 children and we had everything we needed at a very reasonable rate. Reception staff were particularly accommodating and welcoming and credit is due to the team; the children loved being VIKs !
The health club was busy and required a wait before we could get in, but seemed as well controlled as it could be under the circumstances.
Breakfast was busy, really busy. No complaints about the food, but the wait for the hot buffet deterred us and we stuck to cold options.
We got a car parking space without a problem but I was disappointed to see the tone that some guests chose to take with the hotel staff over squabbles and disappointments over the availability of spaces - disabled and otherwise.
Food and drink service seemed to struggle in the bar area. We didnt use it much over our visit but I heard lots of grumbles about the app and length of time to get served. To be honest, the queue and the ambience didnt entice us to spend too much time in the bar area. Of everything we experienced, this part of the hotel experience probably was the most lacking.
What was noteworthy throughout were the staff. It was clearly a busy weekend and they were under pressure and, to be honest, there werent enough of them. However they should be given praise for their stalwart and professional approach - I saw the duty manager take flack that she simply didnt deserve and staff in the bar and breakfast deal with queues that no one would take pleasure in. Reception too, Friday afternoon and evening, was hammered. They all did well - thank you ! Not our first visit and it wont be our last. Well done to the hard working team.
