This is never a 4 star hotel. We have stayed here many times over the years and it gets worse and worse. Staff are not comitted, as I have mentioned before. There was excrenent on the bathroom wall, how disgusting! We did complain to the receptionist. Guests were not wearing masks in public areas including the lift and after complaining to a staff member it continued just the same. There's a sign sauing masks are mandetory but it's not enforced. Management need to pull their socks up and place value in their guests. A lick of paint to the drab and gloomy walls wouldn't go amiss. We paid £5 per night to use the car park but we saw people driving in, parking and disappearing out the back gate, not even using the hotel. Come on Dolphin, get your act together!

I can only describe this hotel as being tired, run down and grim. We were greeted by a corridor full of camp beds and dirty dishes which had been abandoned outside the doors of the rooms leading to our second floor room. On entering the room we were greeted by a badly stained carpet and shabby furniture. After trying to sleep on the cheap shapeless pillows we tried to make a cup of coffee as the only tea bags were Earl Grey which are vile or green tea which are tasteless. Having prepared the coffee the milk was added which immediately feathered as it was rancid. No early coffee as a result! I asked the receptionist later that morning for some replacement milk and breakfast tea which was left next to the dirty cups in a knotted plastic bag. Lovely presentation! We decided against eating breakfast in the hotel as the dining room wouldn’t have looked out of place in 70’s sitcom.

I usually enjoy staying at Mecure hours however this was awful and ruined our weekend. First we arrived and they gave us our key and we arrived in the room and the room was not cleaned! Bed sheets all over the place, kebabs lying around and worse condoms hanging out of the bin. There was also brown stains all over the ceiling and water marks all down the walls. They cleaned our room for us and we attempted to settle in. At 1am in the morning I could feel water dripping on my head and there was water running down the wall!! This was clearly an issue before we arrived as there was already water marks all down the wall before it started to drip. The night ported loved us in our pjs to another room. This room stunk of damp and the walls were covered in brown stains. It could not get any worse. Makes matters worse because we booked via Expedia they will not refund us. AVOID!!

Stayed with mum. Two lovely rooms literally by the courtyard, Staff all very nice, most happy for the price we paid. Shame it was bottles only in the bar but we enjoyed our stay. Right in the centre of town.

Checked into the Dolphin Mercure on 22/05 for a night's stay. I don't know where to start! The hotel boasts a plaque on the wall stating that Jane Austin celebrated her 18th birthday there - I don't believe it has been cleaned or decorated since!! The lobby was drab and dismal with threadbare carpets as was the corridors. On the way to our room we spotted numerous breakfast dishes/trays outside rooms and we checked in at 2,30pm. There were still there on our way out at 5pm! The room was unloved and dirty, The old sash window was dirty and crumbling, there were large cracks and damp patches across the ceiling and stains all over the carpet. Part of the bathroom ceiling was heavily cracked and stained from water damage in the room above and I wouldn't be surprised if it came down in the near future. We had a very bad night's sleep - the room was either too hot or cold and the mattress soft and lumpy. Even the pillows and duvet were thin and cheap. On arriving back at the hotel after our meal we decided to have a drink in the bar. We had to ask for someone to come and serve us, A harrassed and stressed young girl came from the restaurant (obviously covering both) to serve us and had no tonic. The drink was served in a dirty glass with no garnish etc. The place is severely understaffed and the young girl didn't really know what she was doing. We had paid for breakfast and although my husband was just ready to go straight home we decided to try it - how bad could a breakfast be? Famous last words! The dreary dining room had absolutely nothing on the tables and the 'Continental breakfast' was cheap ham rolled in clingfilm and dry croissants. Even the tea and coffee was from a shoddy machine in paper cups! We ordered the full English and when this was brought out after a few minutes we realised it must be precooked. We couldn't eat it - it was stone cold and the fried egg not even cooked. It made my stomach turn just to look at it. Hugely disappointed and disgusted. Feel very sorry for the overworked and probably poorly paid staff but this hotel is in need of a lot of TLC and staff recruitment and training. There has clearly been no money put into the upkeep of the hotel and standards are dire. I have complained to Mercure HQ and sent photos. Total letdown.
