Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Traditional pub with rooms on top and around the pub! Lovely rooms with fun, historical names but noisy at night, although the patrons left on time and all the noise finished by 10pm! Friendly staff, but not a lot of them around and they get very busy during meal times. No service outside of regular working hours. Great location if you have children at Winchester College. Very close to the Cathedral and the town is just a 5 minute walk away. Good food too.

Lovely pub with lots of history and character. Perfect for a night's stay in Winchester. Location is excellent- right next to the cathedral and easy walking distance of every where in the city centre. Our room was very well-appointed and the bed was very comfortable. The pub had a steady stream of customers all day and a great atmosphere with fires lit. The food at dinner was excellent- not cheap - but all the ingredients of very high quality. Good range of wines available by the glass. Breakfast too was excellent- again high quality, tasty ingredients and piping hot. Service throughout was great. Highly recommended and we hope to stay again!

Visited here on Sunday with a group of friends for an early New Years Eve celebration. ( we are a bunch of lightweights who can't last till midnight!) We all had roasts except one who had the fish and chips. The lamb was melt in the mouth and I especially liked the truffle cauliflower cheese. A side of pigs in blankets and jugs of extra gravy topped it off nicely! The yorkies were huge and cooked perfectly. Although it's on the pricier side for a roast, it was well worth the money as the quality and quantity were superb. Our waitress Lowri was very personable, polite and efficient, a great addition to your pub. The only critique I would have is that we were sat near the door to the car park/toilets which was quite draughty at times, as it was a rather chilly day and sadly the fire in that area of the pub wasn't lit. We would, however, not hesitate to go back and have already recommended it to other friends. Keep up the excellent work and well done chef and the kitchen!

We stopped by for a drink and ended up staying for lunch. Atmosphere was really cosy and friendly and everyone was very welcoming. We sat in the bar and had some drinks and then asked to see lunch menu. So many wonderful options and we decided on the charcuterie board, cheese and their delicious cheese truffle toast. Food was amazing. Presentation was excellent and service was fast and friendly.

Went for dinner with colleagues. Had a great time. Staff great. Cauliflower main was really awful. Not as described on the menu, lacking texture, sauce and seasoning. Really disappointing. Options given to resolve but I just felt embarrassed. Won’t go again.

What can I say, The Wykeham Arms is a magical place to spend some time during the build up to Christmas. We were fortunate enough to spend the night in the Hamilton suite which was absolutely wonderful. After a mooch around Winchester and the Christmas market, we had a delicious roast dinner, followed by a cheeseboard. The cooked breakfast was divine-those hash browns really are out of the world! Too good to share with my husband who is still holding a grudge! Special mention to Dylan, Luke and Lori for their attention to detail and Jon who looked after us. Thanks guys. This trip really was very special and we will be back!

We have been going here for many years at Christmas time. The quality and quantity of food has declined. The Christmas meal at £50 a head was poor value. One parsnip each and six sprouts, which were undercooked, and two pigs in blankets. Just really measly portions. We asked for more vegetables which came, but it was a handful of extra sprouts and cabbage. Turkey was from a wholesale roll not slices fresh from a bird. Pudding was OK; starter was bland. The service was fine. We love the atmosphere and will come for a drink but go elsewhere for food.

Initially on arrival we liked what we saw. Our room was clean, lovely bathroom with complimentary toiletries. A small fridge had water, milk & a London Pride beer. The breakfast service was lacking, I had to ask for fruit juice as it had run out at the buffet table & there weren't any plates at the toaster for when I'd cooked the toast, asked for them too. We didn't have jams on our table like others had so we asked. After our room was serviced, the dirty mugs, glasses, spoons etc were not replaced. We asked for clean ones & received them but the dirty ones weren't removed? Niggles maybe but lacking on details was disappointing considering the price of the room, others mentioned chocolates as did the folder in our room but we didn't have any chocolates left for us. We ate in the pub one evening & felt the meal was over priced, the food was delicious but certainly not wow!

How the Wykeham Arms can charge such a huge price for such a small portion of quite ordinary food is beyond me and daylight robbery. A birthday dinner so not a choice venue I would go to as parking is zero to find if you have mobility issues. The Wykeham Arms only allows guests staying in the pubs’ accommodation access to their parking area, so this venue is absolutely not accessible nor friendly for guests with disabilities even though spending a lot of money in the pub. The food portions are tiny for the price charged. My starter of a crispy pig cheek was no more than 2 inches long by 1 inch and simply on a spoonful of coleslaw and this was £12. Next was the Wyke Pie for £23. A small shallow bowl no bigger than a side plate with shredded meat and mash potato. A token number of fork mashed peas for colour. My husband had sausage and mash for £22 which was just 2 sausages on mash with broccoli. Other guests in our party felt exactly the same as the food is neither special nor exciting and quite typical of a boring dull pub chain in comparison. The one and only excellent food items was dessert. The apple crumble tart for £10.50. This was exceptional, but again the size is disproportional for the cost charged. Needless to say, we had a kebab on the way home. On a positive note, the serving staff were charming. Would I return, absolutely NO. My hard earned money will be spent elsewhere on value tasteful dining.

Nice but expensive and a few niggles. We had a superior room. I’m not sure why it was superior as it had a standard 5 foot bed and no wardrobe and was quite small with sloping ceilings. There were complementary drinks in the fridge of 4 small water bottles, some fresh milk and weirdly one non alcoholic beer. Nice bathroom with a bath and a shower. Breakfast was good. Help yourself to everything apart from the cooked option which was served. Good quality ingredients. Kettle and nesspresso machine. The niggles One broken chocolate! Not sure why. Bathroom was cold as radiator didn’t work Bathroom door was glass at top so if someone went in the night the light shone on the other person. Expensive (£215) for Bed and Breakfast.
