Nestled in a prime location, The Green Dragon Hotel receives accolades for its proximity to local attractions, although the surrounding area tends to quiet down early. While the vibrant atmosphere and diverse amenities, including comfortable beds and a well-regarded bar, are highlights for guests, opinions on service and room quality vary. Some guests applaud the attentive staff, but others point out inefficiencies and a dated feel in the rooms. The hotel's cleanliness generally impresses, but costly extras and the need for updates in certain areas somewhat tarnish its overall value.

It’s a nice hotel which is trying hard to be a good hotel but doesn’t quiet get it right. We stayed in a superior room on a Friday and Saturday for £119 for two nights with breakfast. Firstly, the location is excellent. It’s a short walk to the shops, the restaurants and the cathedral. However old sash windows can mean it’s not that quiet in the evening with some traffic noise, sirens and people walking home from a night out (luckily they close at 10pm currently or you could be up later than you hoped). Not the hotels fault and we wanted the location so it’s not an issue. When I want peace and quiet I stay in the countryside. They have had a go at Covid measures but for instance the breakfast is still part buffet with help yourself to cereal, juices and toast so everyone is up and touching the same items. There’s no screens up and you sit about 1m from the next table if you’re not in a booth. There’s salt and pepper pots on the table so unless they are cleaned between sittings it’s not perhaps as effective as most places. The rooms again are a nice size with a decent bathroom but the decorations are old fashioned and our fabric headboard was a bit stained. Again they almost got it right but not quiet. Evening meal was ok but again trying to be fancy and not quiet getting it right. Expensive with small portions left you feeling hungry and a bit cheated and therefore going elsewhere the following evening (try The Den - excellent). Brings me to breakfast. Oh breakfast. On the whole it’s good but there’s not a lot of it. Don’t expect to get to lunch without feeling peckish. You get a tomato, a sausage, 2 rashers of bacon, an egg and a mushroom. Everything else from the free for all Covid oblivious buffet. It’s good quality and cooked well. If you want beans or a hash brown it’s a £1 extra per item. I wanted a hash brown so at the end of breakfast I got a bill for £1. For a single hash brown. I paid by card. I didn’t tip. I don’t really mind and had a spare pound but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen something so silly. It became such a laughing point that now if anyone ever asks me how my stay at the Green Dragon was, the only thing I’ll ever be able to remember is the bill, for a whole pound, I was presented with for my breakfast hash brown. It was a very nice hash brown. There was an Iceland round the corner. We picked up a bag of them for 60p to take home with us 😂😂😂

Stayed on a cold weather weekend Jan 2020. The hotel is well situated in the centre of Hereford and has a car park, making everything in the city within easy walking distance.
We had booked a 2 night Dinner, B and B stay, and all the hotel staff that we encountered (reception, bar, breakfast and evening restaurant) throughout our stay were very pleasant .
Our room (226) was large, quiet, clean, with a comfy bed and had a compact en-suite bathroom. However on arrival we found that the Radiator was not working (cold!) and on contacting reception an electric convector heater appeared. Why not give us another room? The hotel was far from full!
The room and corridor colour scheme was not to our liking, but that’s very subjective.
Throughout our stay we did mention the cold faulty radiator on 2 more occasions to reception, purely for maintenance to be aware. Luckily, and being the only provider of heat in the room, the convector heater (on virtually 24hrs a day) warmed the room sufficiently. No sign of maintenance!
The restaurant is well appointed, a nice ambience, and the staff at breakfast and evening provided a very good service., We were on a package with a dinner meal allowance, however I feel that the evening menu is a bit pricey.
Overall this is a good hotel, being recently refurbished, it just needs a few tweeks.

My boyfriend & have just spent 3 nights at the Green Dragon Hotel in Hereford. What a lovely large old building kept up to a superb standard. Reception & Restaurant staff so very friendly & helpful. The superior room was so spacious & very comfortable. As Covid is still being adhered to. we were asked if we wanted room service & tea & coffee making facilities. We said for 3 nights we didn't want to bother them with room cleaning but we would like clean towels & to take advantage of beverage in our room. We were asked to take a very clean tray of mugs teas coffees, hot chocolate & milk up with us & thru out the stay asked for many top ups which were given freely. The breakfast was truly outstanding. We had fruit juice cereals, toast & preserves but the hot menu was fabulous. Not just the run of the mill British fry up, altho that was on offer. They freshly cooked. Field mushrooms with srigs of thyme on Ledbury loaf toast with whatever side you would like with it.. I had the mushrooms the 1st morning with crispy bacon on top. There was also smoked salmon on Ledbury toast with scrabbled egg to your liking. They also had smoked haddock. Crispy bacon on soft rolls with any sides with it. The other 2 mornings I had smoked salmon (I got loads) with field mushrooms absolutely delicious. All freshly cooked for us. My boyfriend had smoked salmon with scrambled egg & also traditional bacon mushrooms grilled tomato & poached egg. He said it was all cooked beautifully. This hotel is central to all restaurants & shops also you can walk to the Cathedral in 2.minutrs as its round the corner. A terrific location & a superb building with outstanding service. We got this fabulous deal thru Travelzoo, anyone who isn't on their books really needs to be. We have got 2 more 3 night stays booked with them & if they are half as good as the deal we have just been on we will be more than satisfied. 5 star review for the Green Dragon.

this hotel is so central to Hereford - not one of these country hotels where one needs a car to go anywhere.
Parking was easy in the adjoining car par.
Very helpful receptionists during over 2 1/2 day - two night stay.
We ate our evening meal both nights at the hotel and it was excellent - great value and beautifully cooked.
Breakfasts were easily as good as well.
Great care was taken to adhere to Covid cleaning and staff we very careful with wiping down.
We thoroughly recommend this hotel.

I stayed 2 nights whilst visiting family. I was woken at 6:30 both mornings due to the skip outside my window being collected. In fact on the second morning I was awakened before this at 5:30 to the sounds of a delivery being made, also right outside my window. I am writing this review at 6:45 as I have given up on sleep. Yes, the hotel has apparently been refurbished (although I didn't see it before). Despite this my room has a damp smell. We had to ask each day at reception for toiletries and you have to request that the room is serviced, otherwise they don't bother. We ate in the restaurant the first night. The menu was unusual (chicken and chips in a basket, monkfish scampi and chips in a basket etc) - more like bar food. However the prices were astounding- chicken £17.95 and scampi £18.95! Thankfully we were there when the Eat Out to Help out offer was running. Staff were friendly enough but it's the lack of sleep that has made me mark this right down. They need to double-glaze their windows and relocate their skip.

Stayed here with quite a few family and friends for our wedding. I will list the positives and negatives.
On the positive side the place is spotless, nice rooms, amazing breakfast and great location for the city centre.
The hotel tried their best to help in the weeks leading up to arrange a wedding reception but unfortunately it was cancelled 6 days before due to legal advice and government guidlines which we understood.
On the negative side most of the reception staff were quite rude. Even though I had paid in full they wanted card details on arrival to cover the bill, luckily I had receipts printed out, copies were taken but again tried to charge as we handed our keys in on leaving.
Some guests had been trying to contact in the weeks leading up but could not get anyone to answer the phone.
Guests were advised on arrival they could not leave bags but on leaving we saw bags stored near reception in a glass fronted luggage room.
Breakfast took nearly an hour to arrive with very few guests in the dining room.
We had to ask for items already ordered a couple of times but all staff in the breakfast area were really nice and helpful.
My now wife took a call from reception to say some flowers had arrived, is the wedding still on and should I send to your room which did not go down too well.
No fridge or aircon in the room despite being the Cathedral Suite, room was boiling. Windows open all night so very little sleep it is situated on a busy noisy street especially on a Saturday night.
Parking very expensive, recommend Berrington St £6 for 24 hours the next street is £12 for 24 hours. Parking is available at the Green Dragon on a first come first served basis price inbetween.
Overall we had an amazing wedding and reception which was organised at a different location at the last minute overlooking the river Wye. Great time had by all.

Thank you for your comments following your weekend stay with us whilst you were celebrating your wedding. We were all so very disappointed that we could not host your wedding reception, but as the Government guidance stopped all wedding receptions for a 2 week period - this decision was unfortunately taken out of our hands. I am saddened that you found our Front Office team to be rude. We have installed a new system during our enforced closure and unfortunately there have been a few teething issues in trying to make sure that everything is working perfectly. This should not have impacted on any of our guests, but I am sorry that for you it did. Unfortunately the flowers were not arranged by the hotel and when your flower company arrived they were unsure if you were still going ahead. The team tried to deal with this as best they could - and of course can only apologise if any upset was caused by this. We would like to wish you a very happy marriage and are delighted that you were able to celebrate your special day.

We stayed here for two nights in October.

The hotel has recently been refurbished and the decor is nice.

Rooms:
We had a very big bed which was extremely comfortably (if you like firm beds) and the pillows are soft too, we both slept well. Our room had a heater, hairdryer, iron, ironing board and a suitcase stand which were all neatly tucked away in the wardrobe. The rooms did have a few staples missing. The bedroom door didn’t have a lock or latch on it, meaning we couldn’t lock it. They didn’t provide any tissues in the bedroom or toiletries in the bathrooms. No water, no fridge, very low lighting, dirty extractor fan, black marks on bedding, no safe.

Also If your bedroom is at the front of the hotel you’ll need ear plugs as there is a bar/pub opposite which on the weekends hold events and it can get very noisy. The windows are single glazing so there isn’t much sound proofing.

Food/Drinks:
We had dinner in the lounge. It has very relaxed feel
which is nice and the food was good. However! If you have any allergies this may be an issue as the menu is extremely limited with alternate meals. This is the same at breakfast. Also the staff are unsure of which meals have which allergens in.
The breakfast, was very limited. The amount of food you’re given for a cooked breakfast is the size of a child’s portion. Also they kept running out of food. So we ended up filling up on toast.

We went to drink in one of the bars in the hotel which was great. Good drinks menu, good atmosphere and nice decor. Would recommend going here.

Staff:
The staff have a very laid back approach. The majority of them were polite and friendly however nothing was done quickly. We requested some extra towels in our room, it took a few hours for this to happen. I would also advise you check your bill when checking out as we were nearly charged twice for certain things.

Overall, the hotel is nice but it has the potential to be lovely. There’s a few areas which need more attention to detail which would make a big difference. I would stay here for 1-2 nights but not more. I would avoid breakfast and pop to Greggs next door instead

The Green Dragon Hotel is fabulous. From the food to the rooms, I couldn’t fault it.

The beds are extremely comfy with excellent quality linen and the shower in the bathroom is brilliantly powerful. Great to have an iron, hairdryer, kettle and small touches like coffee/tea/hot chocolate and delicious biscuits in the room too.

We had the Christmas Day lunch and it was amazing - 5 courses of deliciousness. From the food to the wine to the service, it was wonderful and a very memorable Christmas Day.

The choice of bars to have drinks in around the hotel is also fabulous, from the glamorous Offa bar to the large sitting room like bar with a fire and lots of comfy sofas, it’s a great place to chill with a delicious cocktail in hand. It’s also wonderful that they allow dogs in so we could have our little dog with us too.

Thank you to everyone at the Green Dragon for a very memorable and fabulous stay, looking forward to visiting again in 2023!

Bathroom absolutely disgusting with a strong smell of urine and marks all on the black flooring - like a textured carpet underlay totally unsuitable for a bathroom. I felt sorry for the cleaner trying to clean that flooring as there was no way that could have been cleaned effectively due to its nature.
Had booked bed and breakfast so went to the restaurant for breakfast. Tables were covered in crumbs from the previous person and had obviously either not been cleaned or just spot cleaned. I watched the waitress 'clean' a table after people had just left, she picked up a stray knife left from the previous people and re-set it (yuck and explains why I picked up my spoon to find it dirty) then only cleaned half of the table. The glasses for the self serve juice were on a filthy tray. I spoke to reception about these issues and was told to email the manager, the lady on reception offered no apology only that she agreed with me and said that they were due a refurb. I emailed the manager and have still not received a response 2 days later. When checking out no one asked how the stay was and it was as if they knew their downfalls and knew it wasn't acceptable standards for a hotel which seemed quite fawlty towers esque.
Overall a tired looking hotel with need for a big injection of funds and generally lacking customer service, training would be beneficial. Cleaners were pleasant on the occasions we saw them and offered extra tea and coffee etc, one of the male waiters in reception also seemed to be more clued in to customer service than the others.
Stayed here with my partner for 2 nights at the end of February so it was not like it was high season or busy (even overheard one of the staff members chatting to another saying he had nothing to do).

Thank you for taking the time to offer your review of the hotel. I am terribly disappointed to read that your stay with us was not the standard that I would expect for any of our guests to experience. The senior management team have reviewed each of your comments – and are now resolving these as a matter of urgency. Floors in the bathroom are being replaced, and full training has been carried out with our restaurant and reception teams. We have used our quieter times to ensure the team are receiving full and in depth training to improve each and every guests experience. We hope to be able to welcome you back in the future for a more enjoyable visit.

I'd booked a travel zoo voucher during lockdown which we used this month for a short break. My sister in law also decided to join us so we booked a second room at full price. The hotel is located in the centre of Hereford, with a conveniently located car park out the back of the hotel which is reasonably priced at £6.50 or thereabouts per night.

We paid for an upgrade to a superior room which was on the first floor. First impressions of the room, as with the rest of the hotel that it had been tastefuly refurbished, but on closer inspection it actually seems a bit tired. There were little things like a hole in the bedding, stained bath and flaking paint in the bathroom and a rather shabby looking net curtain. On the plus side there was a huge, very comfortable bed. Our biggest issue however was how hot the room was. When we opened the door we thought the heating must have been on as was literally a wall of heat. We quickly realised this wasn't the case and the room was just roasting, despite the weather ooutside being cool. When we went downstairs we said how hot the room was, and we were told that it was 'known as a warm room' and she could put a fan in there, but there was certainly no suggestion that we could move rooms. Despite having the window fully open and the fan going, the heat was just oppressive. We couldn't get cold water out of the tap, despite running it for ten minutes and we then realised there was no fridge so we couldn't even get a cold drink. My husband's asthma was also playing up because of the heat and we just couldn't sleep properly, which really spoilt our enjoyment of the weekend. It also didn't help that we were opposite the laundry room and staff talking loudly right outside the door at the crack of dawn.

My sister in law complained when we left as they had similar issues with their room (heat, stained bath tub etc), which they had paid considerably more for and again the staff didn't seem concerned.

On a positive note, the common areas are beatiful and they've kept some of the orginal features and built them into the decor, such as the bells for the room service. The different bars are lovely - we enjoyed some nice cocktails in the bar, and also breakfast is cooked to order and is very tasty and fresh.

I personally wouldn't stay again just because of the heat, which I suspect is a problem with all the bedrooms, or perhaps just the first floor, but it was like sleeping in an oven. It's something they really need to sort out. The staff could also be more helpful and attentive.

The owner is very nice as is the staff. We did not ask for things we needed initially when we did they were magnificent. So ask! They have water at reception so get that before you go up each night. We really enjoyed the food but the menu is limited by Covid. I would eat there one night, we ate outside. The drinks and desserts were great! The cathedral was so close by and had lovely places to sit and lunch is available. Be prepared for steps at the hotel.

The hotel has it's own barrier-controlled car park at the rear & is free to residents. Or at least it used to have, and I hope that's still the case, as I'm staying there next week.
