The Salisbury Arms Hotel garners accolades for its tastefully decorated, clean rooms that feature modern amenities and effective soundproofing, promising a tranquil retreat. The historical charm of the hotel contributes to a cozy atmosphere that many guests find welcoming. Despite some reports of slow service, the friendly staff generally impresses visitors.
Opinions on value vary, with some deeming it overpriced, while others are charmed by the quality refurbishments. The cleanliness, particularly of the bathrooms, consistently receives high praise, though a few guests suggest a broader pillow selection could enhance comfort.

Detailed Reviews
I spent one Friday night at the hotel. The bar was buzzing and had a good selection of beers and wines. The room was small but very nicely furnished with a comfortable bed and it was very quiet. Breakfast was lovely, albeit a little slow and all the staff I met were charming. I would really recommend staying here.

I attended an event at the hotel and so decided to stay over along with a good number of other guests. The event went very well. The Restaurant Manager and his staff worked hard looking after everyone especially taking particular attention to the people with food intolerances.
My main issue was the lack of understanding and sympathy from the Hotel Manager who decided that all the bars in the hotel closed at 11.00 .. even for residents. There was no warning of this which brought the event to a bit of a sudden holt. We were asked to start moving out of the room where the event was being held in shortly after 11.00, asked to move to the front bar even though we were not allowed to buy any mode drinks to continue the celebrations and to quietly wind down after a very enjoyable evening. We were advised that other bars in Hertford were still open but that is hardly the point at that time of night.
I have never experience this before in other hotels .. especially considering what the hotel charged for the event.
I would suggest anyone planing an event at the hotel, make sure you understand the rules made by the hotel manager. It is not like other hotels.

We hastily had to leave our original (nearby) hotel - no hot water to the shower and poor customer service.
We booked into The Salisbury and it was perfect from start to finish.
The reception staff were helpful and efficient, The room was very tasteful, comfortable and above all else the shower had hot water (and rituals toiletries- my absolute favourite).
The hotel had a welcoming atmosphere throughout our brief stay and our breakfast on the morning of our departure was freshly cooked with an excellent menu choice.
My ONLY regret - we didn’t book here for our previous night as well.
I thoroughly recommend a stay here.

My wife and I were really looking forward to staying at the newly refurbished Salisbury Arms. I booked a deluxe king room for one night at the cost of £128. When I arrived I was told there was work going on in the room I’d booked so I was “upgraded” to a boutique room, 119.
Apart from having a very comfortable bed there was nothing else to suggest this was an upgrade. Air conditioning had been disabled which meant the room was warm all night. Even if the windows could have been opened it was far too noisy to do so. One of the bedside lamps was missing meaning that we had to rely on harsh overhead lighting. Our bathroom should’ve had a bath and double shower. Instead it was a small room with a single shower. The shower floor was so slippery that I had to put a towel on the floor to prevent a nasty accident whilst showering. I would suggest that a shower mat be supplied.
There was no kettle so I assumed that we were expected to use the Nespresso machine for hot water. I never do this at home because the tea could have a taste of coffee. Also the area with the tea and coffee was very dark and no light had been fitted. The mezzanine area with the sofa could have been better set out as it had no soft lighting, just bright embedded ceiling lights.
In short I feel that we had actually been downgraded as this room was nowhere near the standard I expected of the type of room I’d booked.
It wasn’t just the room that we had a problem with. We had booked a table for lunch. Our main courses took an over an hour to arrive and one of them was only a sandwich! This matter was only addressed when my wife eventually complained.
I had booked a table in the restaurant for Sunday lunch but cancelled this booking as I no longer have faith in the Salisbury providing a pleasurable dining experience. I dined at the Old Barge instead and it was excellent.
We have stayed at this hotel many times and we've also eaten there many times and never encountered any problems. I expected an improved experience but have been extremely disappointed. We feel that our weekend has been a total waste of money.
Before posting this review I contacted them to explain my disappointment and was expecting to receive a refund of about £20 to compensate for the downgrading.
The reply from the manager did not address why I couldn't use the air con. He said that the kettles were stuck in Dover. He stated that the bedside lamp had been broken the previous night. He was unaware of the shower problem or the harsh lighting. He did not offer any compensation for the downgraded room. When I got the reply all I could do was laugh. It was like receiving an email from Gordon Brittas!

We were a party of 8 with 2 teenage children. The only positive from our visit were the friendly staff. The new decor is pleasant. On our arrival our table was centre of the restaurant and we were tightly packed in down one side. Two tables had been pushed together and of completely different heights with one being very wobbly. The waitress had to pack these out with napkins otherwise the plates would've have wobbled.
The nibbles and starters were OK. But the main meals were awful. Portions were very small. The pie was very small with a very small serving of mash and a couple of sprouting broccoli, certainly not worth £16.50. The fish n chips came with the miniscule sum of 12 chips!!! Along with a grilled slice of lemon, very bizarre. The roast was very small. But the worst was yet to come....the beefburger. A thin dried burger which was like leather, in a roll. Along with withered lettuce and loads of what appeared to be mayo. This had a total of about 12 chips too.
The caramelised onions were missing. At £16.50 this really was overpriced. Even McDonalds serve tastier burgers. The kids chicken strips were like deep fried worms, the chicken being non existent. The menu doesn't reflect what they are serving. I would be, being kind if I said pub food at restaurant price.
The food came out at different times and we received an incorrect food order, which they did rectify monetary wise. There were a mountain of empty glasses on the table which were never cleared throughout our meal.
This restaurant has alot to rectify. We won't be returning.

We spent three nights at the Salisbury Arms and were impressed. It must have been refurbished relatively recently because it was in excellent condition both externally and internally. It's a fascinating old building with period features everywhere. We spoilt ourselves by booking one of their two "boutique rooms"and were rewarded with the first floor room at the front with the large central bay window. It was very generous in size, with a good en suite that had both a large shower and a bath, and plenty of storage. We had one evening meal at the hotel and it was surprisingly good. This may sound daft, but I had the best shepherd's pie I have ever had (with apologies to my mother) because it was made with shredded meat, not standard butcher's mince. Breakfasts were good too, cooked to order and with the chef's attention to detail showing in things such as the sausages, which were made from Gloucester Old Spot pork. Throughout our stay staff were helpful and attentive.
Hertford is a very compact town and the Salisbury Arms is right in the centre, yet it wasn't noisy. The hotel's car park is small, but we always found a space with no problem. A warning, though: if your satnav is not up-to-date it may try to take you along a part of the road that has recently been pedestrianised. You now need to approach the hotel from the eastern end of Fore Street.

We’ve been to the hotel several times before but it has just been refurbished. We stayed for a weekend away visiting friends and have to say we were blown away at how well the refurb has been done. The old hotel was lovely and had real charm about it, with oak beams and wood panelling everywhere. The refurb has updated it and modernised it without losing any of the charm. Still feels very cosy and a nice place to sit and while away the afternoon, but now you can easily slip late into the evening or beyond given the excellent wine list and cocktail menu. The rooms are small but well appointed and feel luxurious. Huge tv, nespresso machines, incredibly comfortable bed with superb pillows plenty of hanging space and fabulous bathroom. Rooms are generallly quite quiet but be aware that the bar can get busy so you may want to ask for a top floor room or one away from the bar if you want an early night or have young kids. Staff are superb, couldn’t have been more helpful. Didn’t have dinner here but the breakfast was excellent, though perhaps ( if I was being difficult) could have had more choice for the continental. Location is great, they have a small car park, with a bigger one nearby if that’s full, and it’s a 10 minute (flat) walk from Hertford East which connects directly into London, so easy for a weekend away from town. We’ll definitely be staying here when we’re visiting Hertford next.

A small group of us now in our 70’s have been having coffee together for about 15 years Ona Saturday morning. The men have had the cooked breakfast, the ladies just a toasted tea cake - delicious! After the Grand Refurbishment we find that the cooked breakfast, while considerably more expensive, provides no toast other than a slice of soggy sourdough under the food: this does not constitute a plate of toast. There appears to be no bread available other than the dreaded sourdough (it’s more modern) and as Richard Osman pointed out on TV the other day, sourdough toast is useless. There are now no tea cakes or any other pastries on offer, so if a couple go in for morning coffee there is nothing to eat with it. We have also had dinner in the restaurant: delicious food, but minute portions of vegetables and in agreement with another reviewer, the apple crumble breaches the Trades Description Act.

Just visited to try out their breakfast and to see the refurbishments, looks great, sat in the window which was lovely. Ordered two coffees, mine was lukewarm. Ordered one cooked breakfast and salmon and scrambled eggs. My poached eggs were hard, sent them back which seemed to be a problem as another waitress came over and questioned it. Both breakfasts were very small, didn’t feel it was value for the nearly £40 it cost. We were both disappointed and won’t be returning for breakfast. If they are going to charge that amount they need to either increase the size of the breakfast or maybe include the hot drinks in the price. Such a shame as it’s really comfortable and a lovely atmosphere. I’m a Hertford resident and love having breakfast out.

My husband and I stayed here 2nd December to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. We stayed in a room called "the snug" . It was perfect for the 2 of us. It had all the amenities that we needed, hair dryer, iron and ironing board, TV, WiFi, tea and coffee making facilities. The bathroom was clean with toilet and nice spacious shower. Shampoo/ body wash and hair conditioner provided, also hand wash and hand and body lotion. Plenty of towels too. The bed was large and comfortable.
We had a drink in the bar on the Saturday night before we went out to dinner and again when we returned later that night. The bar was really busy and we were able to sit down when another couple left.
Continental breakfast was included in the price of our stay. We had croissants, pain au chocolate, fruit, yogurts, toast with jam and marmalade to choose from. Teas, coffees and fruit juice too. You could pay extra for a cooked breakfast.
The car park which is just around the corner from the hotel is only small. We arrived at the car park at 2.45pm ready for 3pm check in and we were lucky enough to get one of the last parking spaces. The hotel provides alternative parking elsewhere I believe.
The staff were friendly. The public areas were clean and decorated ready for Christmas.
The hotel in right in the middle of the town centre just a short walk from shops, bars and restaurants.
We really enjoyed our stay here and would definitely return.
