The building is ancient so it was a pleasant surprise to find an Aqualisa power shower which was the same as I have at home. Proper third world gripe here but the position of the power point in the mounted mirror is too close to the wall so I couldn't charge my electric toothbrush up.
Staff were a bit slack on giving information out; its a good job I asked about the parking otherwise I wouldn't have been given a permit and also without any brochure evident in the room; I wouldnt have had a clue about the breakfast times or wifi password.
Other points of the top of my head were that there's plenty of parking in the courtyard to the rear of the building and the breakfast was reasonable.
The White Hart has character and is in a great location, handy for shops, restaurants, park and Abbey. I would highly recommend it, but please, people, be realistic in your expectations!
Worth the visit, to relax, in these troubled times!
We were welcomed by a charming man and to be fair all the staff we encountered were pleasant. We were advised our room had been upgraded to a room in the "cottage" a building across the path from the main hotel. My partner was hoping for a 4-poster from his booking so we were a little surprised to find ourselves in a room that really needed a face lift. Yes, there was the added facility of a kitchen area although why we'd need a kitchen sink and microwave was beyond us!
The room was tired with grubby wall finishes, lamps coming away from the walls, a full length mirror that is like something from a funfair and the side of the bed nearest the door had a huge dip in the mattress from over use. The bathroom is lovely and well equipped but a radiator/towel heater would stop you freezing to death in there on a cold winter's morning. There is some outside noise due to single glazing but that's to be expected. Unfortunately we were awoken several times with a car alarm going off in the car park but that's not the hotel's fault.
Breakfast was interesting - The unlimited offer of cereals, toast and fruit turned out to be three tupperware containers with cornflakes, rice crispies and one lonely mashed up weetabix in the third, the fruit was a fruit bowl with whole apples, bananas and plums, all looking a little passed their best. As someone who travels frequently I'm accustomed to offerings of museli, bran cereal and prepared fruit and yoghurt for breakfast so although adequate it's become a bit of a joke between my partner and I now. Toast arrived with one slice for each of us... The full english my other half received was ok.
Overall - lovely staff and we feel we'd perhaps have enjoyed the experience better being in the main hotel building. If we visited again we'd skip breakfast in favour of one of the amazing cafes the town as to offer.
If you want somewhere decent to stay, I would suggest the hotel next door. Avoid this establishment like the plague!
My daughter's room was similar to ours, but looked slightly better overall, a little less jaded.
Breakfast in the morning was reasonably good. I just had some cereal and toast, but husband and daughter had a cooked breakfast which was served fairly quickly and was very tasty. The guy that served our breakfast could have done with some cheerfulness training, very morose! We were able to leave our cars in the small car park whilst we went to the graduation ceremony which was a god send.
We'd also booked a table for lunch at 1pm for after the ceremony. On this occasion though food was very slow coming, probably due to the fact that they had problems with the fryer (even though we hadn't ordered anything fried). The poor waitress was very apologetic and we were offered free drinks whilst we waited.
Couldn't fault the staff at all. (Except maybe the breakfast guy).
All in all a reasonable stay, picked mainly for the location opposite the Cathedral, but wouldn't stay here again. Do not consider this hotel if you have mobility issues.
The breakfast was excellent however.
Staff were very good too.
There is a car park that you access through an archway next to the hotel. This was very convenient.
Our room was comfortable however the TV did not work and we ran out of hot water in the morning during the second shower.
I was also disappointed that they charged a whopping £20 per night for a dog.
I’d stay again, but it did not blow me away.
