Travellers' Choice
Just metres from Canterbury's medieval West Gate, this charming building dates back to 1403. A former coaching inn, it offers free WiFi and free parking, 2 minutes' walk from the city centre. The Falstaff still retains many original features, including oak beams and an open log fire. Each room has a TV for guests to use, and facilities for making tea and coffee. The hotel offers a cooked to order full English breakfast as well as self service buffet option. The bar offers a range of wines and variety of exclusive cocktails. Canterbury West Rail Station is a 3-minute walk from the building. The city's spectacular Norman cathedral can be reached in less than 10 minutes on foot.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Came to Canterbury for a family wedding and stayed at the Falstaff, very nice experience all round. The staff were very friendly and the room we had was lovely and very warm. As my husband has mobility difficulties I asked for a room that didn’t have any stairs to access it and they gave us a perfectly placed room. I must mention the lovely smelling hand and body wash in the bathroom, I’m just annoyed I forgot to ask what it was so that I could buy some.

Overall, it is a good hotel. However, if you need a lift, then this is not the hotel for you. It is an old coach inn, so the stairs are a bit steep. Now for the problems, (1) The soap dispenser in the shower are too high up, so you have to reach up above shoulder level, to reach them. (2) This is the worst problem, there is a glass shelve about the wash basin, it is far too low. So that then you are getting a wash you keep hitting it, and cannot not rinse your face properly etc, thus sending a shower of water onto the floor. The problem can easily be solved, by moving it upwards under the mirror.

Don't waste your money on the Luxury afternoon tea as it was far from luxurious. The Champagne was excellent, the waitress was very good but the food was very disappointing. Meagre portions and cheap sandwich fillings, you can't call egg a luxury filling. The corner stone of any afternoon tea should be the scones. Ours just crumbled into bits when they were cut, it was just impossible to spread the jam and cream. There was just one stodgy cake each and drinks were served in mugs not China cups. We have had many afternoon teas and this was one of the worst we have had. It wasn't worth £70!

Just had a lovely stay at the Falstaff. Staff were very friendly and welcoming and had good suggestions of things to do in Canterbury (particularly recommend visiting the Goods Shed which is 5/10 minute walk away). The hotel is done up really nicely with lovely touches like the roll top bath in the bedroom. Bed was very comfy! The hotel is in a great location, easy walking distance from the station and other local attractions. Would definitely go back.

Had an amazing stay here again at the Falstaff. Stayed in a junior suite and would like to say a big thank you to Justin who works on reception/ front of house for securing the particular room we asked for in our stay. We really appreciated his assistance and friendly and helpful manner. Cocktails in the bar are among the best in Canterbury! We look forward to returning again soon.

We stayed at the Falstaff in April 2024 and had a delightful stay. We stayed in a superior room with a roll top bath in the room. Rooms were very clean, beds extremely comfy, tea, coffee, etc provided and toiletries were good as was the shower! The hotel is beautifully decorated, the bar area is comfortable and relaxing, attentive staff and a lovely range of cocktails! Parking in the hotel car park is limited and not guaranteed, also comes at an overnight cost of £12. We checked in fairly early and were able to get a space however there is a multi storey car park in the next road so parking shouldn't be an issue. Hotel located right in the city centre, perfect for e ploring historic Canterbury on a sunny day! We will most definitely be staying here again, a gem of a hotel in a beautiful city.

Stayed here recently and found the hotel to be excellent. Staff were attentive and the styling of the hotel was lovely. Rooms were well equipped and nicely styled. Breakfast was included. Large selection and very nice indeed. Great location in the centre of Canterbury. Would definitely recommend this hotel 👍🏻

Great location for exploring Canterbury. Lovely room, very comfortable bed, pleasant staff. Breakfast could have been a little more imaginative but there are other options near by - The Refectory Kitchen a couple of doors down, was fabulous!

A lovely hotel in a perfect location. The hotel has great decor within the old characteristic building, the bar is full and serves a good drink. Rooms are very comfortable and reasonably priced. The hotel is situated at the west gate of the city which makes most attractions within a 10 minute walk and a few of the we’ll know restaurants and bars right on it’s doorstep. Totally recommend this one for a nice weekend break.

Overall the hotel is good, great bar, cocktail bar staff and the decor is cool. The thing that let it down for me was some of the staff. The person checking us in didn't exactly make us feel welcome, saying nothing, looking quite surly and just handed us our registration form and key. I even had to ask where the room was. At breakfast, our server did the minimum, was also quite surly, didn't ask if there was anything else we needed or if the food was ok (it was obvious the food itself wasn't freshly cooked either, with scrambled eggs that solid, they've clearly been under heat lamps for a while). Then at check-out, no "how was your stay?" or "hope to see you again", they didn't even give us the code to exit the car-park! It wasn't a bad stay by any stretch, just some people lacking hospitality skills and I left there feeling cold with no incentive to go back.
