The bar at the front of the hotel was lovely, welcoming and offered a first class service. The servers were all friendly and chatty, making suggestions about our drinks and working tirelessly.

The pianist was a lovely touch and created a nice ambience in the room, playing purely by memory and taking requests! He, too, was friendly asking about our stay and where we were from etc.

Unfortunately the hotel itself is rather run down. I always feel you can tell a lot about an establishment by the state of the toilets. The public ones by the bar were grubby and the cubicle I first went in didn’t even have a lock on the door and stickers (vandalism) stuck to the back of it! There was also no soap left, but luckily I carry hand gel. I have never worked in the leisure industry, but many places I visit have hourly toilet checks so these sorts of incidents shouldn’t occur. I dread to think how many germs have been shared due to those who were unable to wash their hands.

We stayed the August bank holiday weekend and had an excellent stay, lots of moaning reviews had given me the impression it would be average but it wasn’t at all. The staff all wearing masks and adhering to all rules upon arrival, we arrived early and had no trouble getting in the car park, it is a bit pricey but we’d rather pay it than drive around somewhere we don’t know trying to find somewhere cheaper and it’s so handy being behind the hotel. The room was lovely, tidy and very clean. We had a three course meal and breakfast included, we stayed on the Sunday night offer they do and well worth the money. The meal in the restaurant was superb as well as the service, thanks to Tom for being super efficient and lovely he made our evening! We then went into the bar for some cocktails which were great too. The breakfast was just as good as the meal the night before and same standard of service from Tom again. The staff go to every effort to make you feel safe and comfortable, cleaning the chairs and tables before you go and sit down as well as the staff in masks and visors. Also nice to see all the guest adhering too. We had a fab trip and enjoyed Canterbury no end, the punting was well worth it. Thank you for making our stay thoroughly enjoyable.

This hotel was booked last minute for a small celebratory stay in Canterbury. It was booked at a good rate (£80).

Check in took forever - staff were slow, one person on the reception with a queue and several staff just walked past and left us to wait rather than apologise or attempt to assist. Checking in took around 15 minutes. Not great.

The room was nice if a little plain but contrary to other reviews the room was very quiet with no noise from the outside, even though we were on the first floor.

To my surprise literally everything in this hotel has a price tag attached. Even the small bottles of water and snacks in the room had a price menu and these were, frankly, outrageous. £2.50 for a can of Coke, £2 for a carton of water, £1 for a small tea cake etc. Probably worth adding, all of the small snacks and drinks are stored under the ultra warm AC unit and there is no fridge.
Nothing is comped and it seems they only want to squeeze every penny out of visitors.

The room was reasonably clean with the exception of pubes stuck on the ceiling of the bathroom and cobwebs in the corners of the ceiling. Otherwise, very clean, smelled nice, pleasant, etc.

Have you ever been to a hotel and tried to dry your hair? Here it wasn’t too much of an effort but I feel as though providing a nozzle for hairdryers in 2020 isn’t a big ask.

Look, this review sounds quite negative. Don’t get me wrong, this hotel is pleasant but it is not a luxury stay- it is decidedly average and with too many small issues to make it truly brilliant.

Good things: nice room, clean, free Oreos, generally friendly staff, nice bar, comfy bed, big pillows, no noise from outside, very central.

We attended the Abode on 29th December as a family Christmas present.

We were booked in for the taster menu and a one night stay.

Before going for our dinner we went to the champagne bar for a nice drink, the service we received did not start the trip off too well. We ordered at the bar as it was busy and were still charged a service charged, annoying but fine.
However we ordered a gin called ‘pinkster’ which described a raspberry gin garnished with fresh raspberries and a mint spring. When the drink finally arrived at the table it was put down and was clear looking with a lemon in it.
When the bar man came back over we asked what it was and he replied “the pinkster”. When we questioned the fact it had nothing it said on the menu other than gin in it he replied “yeah we don’t have raspberries or mint. Hence the lemon”. No apologies no sorries just really abruptly.
At not point before offering the drink did they explain they didn’t have the actual ingredients for the drink.
Not very good customer service when your paying £9 per drink.
He did offer a refund at the end when we complained which we turned down but disappointed with the customer service for this kind of hotel!
The tasting menu food was delicious and the man who selected and described our wines was lovely.
However there were stains on the wall next to where we were eating , a broken salt shaker and the table wasn’t too clean. None of which would ever bother me but when your paying £110pp for the meal I expect higher standards.

The room was lovely and we slept very well.

Overall some lovely elements but customer service and the little things like stains and broken things I would expect to be better when you are paying so much money for it!

We stayed Saturday night and the location of the hotel is great right in the middle of the town. We paid £160 B&B and the room was quite small and also needed updated the bathroom was very old fashioned. The rooms were quite noisy and the breakfast in the morning was good but service was very slow and most people had to asked where there breakfast was. The car park at £14 is also very expensive its just a dirt carpark this should be free of charge.

Very pleasant and helpful staff in this centrally placed hotel. The room was very comfortable - we slept well - but the plumbing produced some unusual gurgling noises from time to time (but not enough to cause undue disturbance). We were offered a discount for booking breakfast in advance and at that price we thought it good value. At full price the continental option would have been expensive in our view.
We would certainly choose the aBode if visiting Canterbury again.

We are not too demanding for stays, however we do expect at least basic maintenance and comfort.
The hotel is located at the main street, location is very central.
Cleaning staff are also doing everything they can, and trying to keep this old hotel clean. But unfortunately there is many of issues we noticed.
First of all the hotel seen refurbishment too many years ago. In the corridor there is some ceiling panels missing, exposing cabling and chunks of dust, flooring heavily work out. The bed is absolutely not comfortable, plus rooms are not soundproof at all. And i'm not talking about loud students outside- it is fine as it is what you have to pay for the central location.
But the couple in the next room (it might been next up, left, righ or elsewhere- it was complete Dolby Surround) had their mating dance all night thorough. we are not a snobs, but it was like they've been in our room with all the details. Obviously it was not their fault, but it is huge con for the hotel as there is some regulations regarding rooms being at least basically soundproof. The shower is bolted down to the wall at 2 mtr height, so if you just want to wash your feet or anything else - be prepared to wash your head as well. Very old bathroom.it was first time i regretted about the money spent on to the stay. .

Dear Andrew G Thank you for sharing your review of your recent stay with us. Please accept my apologies that our hotel was not presented as perfectly as it normally is. We have had some bad luck with water leaks recently which has meant that we have lost some ceiling tiles in a small part of our corridors and we are waiting for new stock to be delivered. Normal service should be resumed very soon. I am very sorry that you endured a disturbed nights sleep. Whilst we make every effort to reduce sound from adjoining rooms, this sometimes cannot be guaranteed. I apologise too that the shower was not to your liking. We have a few bedroom bathrooms that do not have the preferred universal hose sytstem, but we are looking to change the last few bathrooms that we have over to that system in the near future. I thank you again for your review and hope that you will consider staying with us again when next in the area. With kind regards Simon Barker General Manager

We stayed at Abode for the first night of our honeymoon - I wish the hotel we had moved onto had been as comfortable as this was!

We were upgraded to one of their 'most enviable' rooms at no extra cost to us which was a really nice surprise. Based on the room and what we paid, this review would undoubtedly be 5 stars, but I feel it's only fair to take into account the cost of one of these rooms according to their website. I'm therefore dropping to 4 stars just because I do feel the cost for one of these rooms is fairly high.

Staff: The hotel is clean and the staff were clearly working hard to keep in ine with social distancing measures (screens, temperature taken at check in for example). They were polite and friendly and were really helpful and kind when I called with a few queries in advance. They were also really responsive at reception when I contacted them about an issue (nothing to do with the hotel).

Room: When we walked into our room it was freezing cold from the aircon, but this just showed how effective their system clearly is. It soon warmed up when we turned this off. The rooms are fairly sparse at the moment because they don't display their usual soft furnishings due to Covid, but this actually works fairly well with their modern aesthetic. Our room was stunning and huge, and I almost just wanted to spend the day in it. The bed was the comfiest I've ever slept in and was about the width of a bus. Everything you coud need was in the room. They also have effective noise-cancelling screens on the windows. If I had to be really picky, I'd say the extractor fan in the bathroom was too loud.

Breakfast: We chose to have breakfast in our room. There is normally a £5 fee for this but with Covid the hotel have waived this to encourage guests to stay out of the restaurant at busy times. The breakfast was excellent and the staff who dropped it off were helpful too. A highlight was the coffee, which was among the best I've tasted.

I probably wouldn't shell out the money for this room again just because I'm not a big spender, but the next time I visit Canterbury I will 100% revisit Abode.

The hotel is right in the very centre of Canterbury and about 10 mins walk from either railway station. Our room was very spacious and even had a bath ( a rare feature in hotels today) Breakfast was very comprehensive with many cooked and continental options. Service was very good with all staff very friendly and helpful. I don't think you really could ask for more in a hotel.

I booked this hotel directly through their own website thereby qualifying for a free upgrade on arrival if space was available, that was a lovely start to my stay. There is a car park, £18 a day, this is cheaper than the public car park charges and is secured by a barrier. Front of house staff are extremely welcoming and helpful. I had breakfast included, this was served efficiently and there were several choices of starter, main course, juices and a variety of teas and coffee. The room was spotless with complimentary tea, coffee and water plus a tuck box at an additional charge. The location was perfect. I could walk to the cathedral in 2 minutes. Sightseeing tours begin in the Butter Market, 2 mins walk and the Marlowe theatre is also just a few minutes away. Lots of places to eat and shop right outside the hotel. This is a very good quality brand hotel and the Canterbury staff go all out to delight the customer.
