NOTE, We are in the middle of a huge construction site. Remodeling the centre of Dover from 2015 to 2016, when completed we will be surrounded by restaurants and a cinema. A 200 year old Coaching Inn 100 yards from the beach & marina and a 5 minute stroll from the Ferry terminals to France. The Castle has a lively bar with a pool table and is laid back and very friendly to visitors.

This place is in a fairly good location (near ferry terminal, cliffs and castle) but we were not at all happy about the state of our room and bathroom. We booked the 'deluxe' twin, but this did not even include towels! The room still had the previous guests' sheets on the bed and empty wine bottles in the room when we arrived at 2:30pm. We then went to the castle until 5pm and the room was still not made up. The owner then came up with sheets and said he was about to make the beds, or he could just leave them on the bed and I could make the beds if I liked??!! What the? I went downstairs to the bar and let him do it. When we went back up there the beds were done, but the room had not been vacuumed (ear bud, crumbs and dirt on the floor) and the bathroom had not been touched, including the hair in the basin and bathtub. I went back down and said we were waiting for the bathroom to be cleaned so we could shower and go out for dinner. The owner then went up there and came back 5 minutes later. When we went up the basin was wet and there was still a hair near the drain hole in the basin so it was obvious he just ran the water to wash away the hair! Disgusting! How about spraying some bathroom cleaner? There was hair and dirt on the floor in the bathroom also and the bin had not been emptied from previous guests. I don't even want to know when the toilet was last cleaned! If there is another backpackers in Dover - go there. The owner was a nice guy - gave us a lift up to the castle but his standards and work/cleaning ethic need a serious overhaul.

Cleaner skipped off work that day, we have a new one. As with many hostels we rely on backpackers to clean up after themselves and when travelers run out of money they can stay for free if they change the sheets hoover etc, we have had great Belgian, Ozzie, NZ, American cleaners and one Italian who was lovely but walked around with a hoover with no filter in it, kind regards Paul

Paid £28 for a private 3 bed room with ensuite. Bit of a squeeze, but beds were clean and not too uncomfortable and toilet/shower were useable. Kitchen facilities a little dirty but manager was friendly (some good banter) and said we could have all the toast we wanted. 10 minute walk from passenger ferry, so ideal to wait for our trip to France.

No fresh sheets were provided, the place seems to be very poorly cleaned, the "breakfast" originates from a kitchen which would never pass any hygiene checks, the heating was out and the water in the showers was ice cold. On the bright side: Cheap beer makes you forget you're there...

We had a reservation via Hostelworld with this hotel, specifying that our arrival was to be at 22.30 (because we came from Cambridge). Well, when we arrived at that time, the manager of the hostel (who stank to alcohol) said to us that all the rooms were sold out, leaving us without a place to sleep, fully loaded with our luggage and raining outside.

Logically we refused to leave the place until he found a sollution (the blame wasn't to be put on us due to the fact that we had the reservation with a paid deposit, and arriving between the check-in hours), asking him to call any other place around where to sleep. We didn't care which kind of place: as the situation was desperated we would be happy only with a roof and a mattress.

He came back several minutes later saying that everything was fixed, that he found a bed & breakfast where to do so which was located 20 minutes walking from where we were, gave us some directions and apologized for the inconveniences. But when we arrived there, the b&b was totally closed, holding a "no vacancies" sign in its main door, and leaving the impression that it has been closed like that for some time despite according to that man they had reserved beds for us. We rang in the main door several times, but as time passed what happened became obvious: the manager from Dover Backpackers had lied to us! He didn't make such a call, it was just a way to get rid of us -and, therefore, the problem- sending us to the opposite corner of Dover loaded with all our luggage and very tired.

We had to spend the night in a roofed car parking, taking turns for vigilance of our luggage every time each one of us tried to had a nap, and logically we ended up exhausted for sightseeing the next day.

Finally, when I came back to my country, I contacted the Dover Backpackers, in order to get a refund of the deposit charged to my bank account. The guy who answered us back (in a very kind way, let's be fair about it) said that the refund wasn't possible, due to the fact that the reservation was made online. In other words: we were scammed. Thankfully not much -only the deposit, as said-, but still they got the money for a service they didn't provide. And what's worst: after all the inconveniences caused that night, in which we couldn't sleep at all and had to suffer the previously related "adventures".

I would like to clarify that I am a regular traveller, doing trips of such kind very often and being quite used to the procedures regarding accommodation booking and so on. But this is the first time that ever happens to us. It is my duty to warn whoever is thinking about staying in this hostel, because the way is being run is not serious at all, and it can ruin your trip.

Thanks a lot for reading. Kind regards.

Now I've been travelling through Europe for a while and I have to say this is by far the WORST experience I've had in a hostel. First of all, there is an horrid stench when you enter the building, not to mention the colony of flies that fly around the ''reception''. The building is rundown and it's a real dump: couches are ripped up, floors are sticky, the carpet is coming apart, most of the toilets don't work and the ''kitchen'' is very disgusting. The toilets were malfunctioning constantly, no toilet paper was available, the bathroom floors were wet and rotting away with mold and no hot water was available to grab a shower, which had at least inch of crud in it. What was appalling was how I never got any bed sheets for the night: the mattress was stained with god knows what, the stuffing was pouring out of the pillows and it was a big mess in general throughout the hostel. Icing on the cake were the sleazy individuals burning off their welfare checks in the bar downstairs and spreading cigarette smoke throughout the building: gross! Really sketchy individuals who are not recommendable. Also, the owner (Paul McCullan) is actually a criminal who is part of the phone-hacking scandal and he doesn't care about your well-being. Trust me, avoid this place at all costs.

The style is "shabby chic" we set out to be everything MacDonald's is not, the sofa is deliberately ripped in the way some people wear faded and ripped jeans, my sincere apologies if it wasn't to your taste, kind regards Paul

Hi, I can’t believe one reviewer's claim that ”The "free breakfast" is literally just bad coffee in a dirty cup.” When I stayed there last summer during a geology field trip with some old uni colleagues, Paul, the delightfully attentive owner, appeared every morning with a pot of whole bean Ethiopia Yirgacheffe coffee and a plate of freshly-baked croissants. He was happy to take orders for more traditional fare and I can thoroughly recommend his lightly poached eggs on buttered granary bread with slivers of Romsey Marsh bacon sourced from a farm shop in nearby East Sussex.

Disgusting place in terms of cleanliness and atmosphere. If you like soiled sheets, an all pervading smell of damp, lukewarm water and loud music blaring out till 3.00 a.m. you'll give it a 5-star review. Otherwise, I'd opt for a park bench. Probably on par with the worst type of hostel. I actually found the whole experience quite depressing!

This website deleted our good reviews from people downstairs enjoying the party and left this one from someone upstairs who didn't, never mind, also we only have a licence to open until 2am weekends and midnight weekdays, so it's a bit of an exaggeration.we don't pay this site, we might be sh+t but at least we're honest, hope this response gets posted at least for a while

Unforgettable. I've never experienced such an awful hotel. A night 'down under'. On arrival to the Castle I was greeted with a building which did not quite live up to the newly painted, quaint, little pub that the photo suggests it is. In fact, it was a hovel in the middle of a huge building site with no parking. The entrance to the hotel and pub was untidy. Our bedroom was dirty with three inches of dust and cigarette ends underneath the bed. The beds were itchy and I've came away with a wheezy cough. The breakfast was help yourself, make yourself, clean up yourself in a kitchen that's never been cleaned. One of the two showers for the hotel was broken so we were forced to use the bath which was black with mould and scum. The wallpaper was peeling off the walls and the ceiling was covered in a rainbow of pink and blue mould. What really was a delight was the huge window with no curtain so when you stripped your kit off to take a shower there was literally no privacy and the whole street could see you. The stair to the outside had also collapsed so they had erected scaffolding to enter and exit when the pub when the entrance was shut during the day. The dining room was cluttered and unclean.

The manager used homophobic language with us, asking if us and a local were 'bent' and telling us our clothes were 'gay.' Being so desperate and tired at the time, we stayed anyway, though the beds were rough and itchy, the bathroom had no hot running water or soap or toilet paper and we were very glad to leave. NEVER GO HERE.
