Brathay Lodge garners praise for its attentive staff, who are consistently described as welcoming and helpful, creating a homey atmosphere. Its location is a hit among guests for its convenience to local attractions and the bonus of ample parking. The lodge's ambiance is seen as clean and comfortable with modern touches, but some guests have noted an institutional feel.
Room cleanliness and comfort receive high marks, although the absence of an elevator has been a concern for some. Despite the commendable cleanliness and a satisfying continental breakfast, the extra charges for parking and breakfast have led a few travelers to question the value for money.

Detailed Reviews
This is in a great location, right in the heart of Ambleside, near to pubs, restaurants, shops, etc. It’s a really nice building, clean and well decorated. Staff are super friendly and really helpful. The family room that we stayed in was excellent - really big, lots of space and a curtain to separate sleeping areas, as well as a comfortable seating area. Added to this, there is a balcony seating area with easy access outside, negating the need to walk through reception in muddy boots, or when you just want to get out onto the street. The only downside is that there’s no cooked breakfast available, which is a shame - however, the buffet selection is extensive and really good quality. The coffee is also good.

After a warm welcome we were shown to a spacious spotlessly clean dog friendly room. With access to both the breakfast room and outdoors via the two doors it was so convenient for getting our self service continental breakfast which we were able to bring back to the room and wash off our muddy dog and boots after our walks. The room was well equipped with wardrobe, drawers and a dressing table. Particularly important for us there was an area with a table and chairs so we didn’t have to put our dog in the car while we ate breakfast. As the room was so spacious the only request we would make is for a couple of coat hooks. When we return from walks more than likely wet it would be good to have somewhere to hang them to dry. Free parking was also a big bonus. When we return to Ambleside we will definitely book here again and would try to request the same room.

Dog friendly rooms are great, we have stayed in the family one multiple times and found it spacious, spotless and with very comfortable beds. The en-suite is very nice and the jacuzzi bath is a great touch. Staff are friendly and welcoming and will not hesitate to do anything for you! Breakfast is a continental buffet style (but not like a bad premier-inn-style rubber scrambled egg buffet!) with a selection of cereals, muesli, fresh fruit, yogurts, toast, pastries, muffins, juices, and tea and coffee. It is right in the centre of town, across the road from the mini golf park.

Very disappointing. I should start this review to put it in a proper context that I have provided Bed@breakfast and I’m a landlady. I understand the challenges for this type of business but even so although there were pluses the property is spotlessly clean there were nice touches in the bathroom with soap shampoo et cetera. On arrival we were told our rooms would not be serviced during our stay.. that we were to collect our breakfast in the morning but not before 830 and that there would be no one on the premises from 6 pm therefore to keep the key with us otherwise we would not be able to get in to the building. None of this were we aware of before our arrival. The crate that we were given by queueing downstairs at 8:30 in the morning was very basic. a good supply of fruit a couple of yoghurts and when I asked for natural yoghurt it was supplied. Two little boxes of cereal from the multi pack fruit juice from Longlife box’s The two very tiny croissants provided had a sell by date of September 2021 and therefore I would not consider to be fresh for £160 per night. It was also made clear as no one was going to come into our room that it was our responsibility to bring down the crate with the plates and cutlery supplied so that they could be washed for the next morning. I feel that this was not acceptable. This was advertised as a continental breakfast and it was nothing like a continental breakfast in my experience and I lived in Italy for 10 years. Overall the property was very basic the bedding needed replacing but was clean and ironed. the beds were not comfortable. The room was large but the sofa almost impossible to sit on and I suspect is in fact a bed couch.. For the price being charged £160 per night I would’ve expected better quality. The Internet kept going in and out this can happen and may not have been their fault but the office Internet was working and we were not offered the code to be able to use it during these times. . We had in fact booked to stay for 3 nights and left after 2 day. We paid the full bill amount . And although we made it clear that it wasn’t because of the bad weather we had prepared for that it was because of the disappointment that we experienced in the lodge itself. No Staff after 6 o’clock and no breakfast before 830. We had planned to experience the area and would like to have started off a day earlier. It is with great sadness that we have to say that we would not return nor could we recommend.
The conversation i had with the owner and the Internet images led us to believe we would have a very different experience.

Brathay Lodge is in an ideal location both for accessing the fells and also restaurants/shops. The on-site parking is a bonus, especially at busy times. Our 'small double' was a good size, bigger than some standard size rooms we have stayed in elsewhere! We had everything we needed in the room (including nice large fluffy towels), and we felt very Covid-secure throughout our stay. The breakfast box provided was generous, and its content varied to suit most tastes. The staff are all welcoming and friendly - we'll be back!

We had the biggest twin room we have ever had..! ( number 12). The view was lovely, overlooking a small green, with a view beyond of a beautiful church, then the hills. Clean, comfortable, very COVID savvy too, so no breakfast buffets at the moment, but the most splendid breakfast box could be collected from the dining area in the morning, containing…a hot bacon, sausage and egg wrap, fruit juices, pastries, cereals, fruit in a Tupperware box as well as two pieces of fruit, yoghurts, wrapped flapjack/ brownies/ waffles….you could have cappuccino coffee too if you brought your room mug downstairs too. You could eat your feast in the dining room, or take it back to your bedroom, which we did, utilising the table and chairs in the bay window.
We had free parking as we booked directly with Brathay lodge, otherwise it would be £10.00 per night.
The lady receptionist was utterly charming; so welcoming.
We will definitely stay again, especially as we now have a 10% discount voucher..!

Originally booked for March,(we have stayed there many times with our dogs) then deferred to July because of covid,we finally arrived 31st July. A little apprehensive as to how things would 'pan out'because of restrictions etc, we were immediately at ease once we saw how organised everything was.Our room had been sanitised before arrival with all non essential soft furnishings removed.
Breakfast was collected by ourselves from the breakfast room, usual for us because of the dog, the only difference being, there was no buffet. The hosts had put together a box of breakfast goodies which my opinion would suit even the fussiest of eaters, my only complaint was there was far too much!!.
Sanitiser on the door and a one way system made this extremely safe and efficient and we will be going back.

We received a warm welcome and were given the key safe number to get into our family room. The room worked well as it had a dividing curtain so the two children could be in their own separate area.
A great location: we could be in one of the restaurants in Ambleside within about three minutes & we could walk to Lake Windermere where we found a nice café, the Waterhead coffee shop, looking out over the lake and we hired kayaks near the YHA.
The only thing I could not find was the path near the B&B leading to country walks, so we just did Lake Windermere or Ambleside town.
Negatives-
The decor and room was all quite basic and plain, no luxury, bathroom ok but not very modern, disappointing that jacuzzi feature was turned off, I don’t know how Covid affected this. Bed not particularly comfortable.
We did not find the breakfast box boxes that nice and I would’ve just loved a hot piece of toast & marmite. Again I know this thought to be being Covid safe but I felt we missed out on a good breakfast.
We wouldn’t return because I want a bit more comfort and character in a bed and breakfast/hotel and I know prices are higher due to Covid but £200 per night is a lot for a family of 4.
I’m sorry to be negative as the staff were very pleasant.

I travelled here in September and stayed for two nights.
The best thing about this lodge is it's location. It's close enough to Ambleside side to walk in (5mins), you can walk to the lake in 15mins and most of the walks start right by the church.
We visited during Covid times, where the hotel was only opening at the weekends, with limited staff and tight regulations, such as spa baths turned off and a reduced breakfast. However, that does still include a hot breakfast wrap. Covid awareness was taken very seriously here.
Our room was one of the ones in the lodge section which had a balcony entrance (also connecting to the inside of the hotel) Rooms are big and nicely decorated. We stayed in a family room for two, which has a curtain dividing the two sets of beds. A nice idea if you were staying as a family. The bathroom was huge and the water was always hot.
On the Saturday night we couldn't get a reservation in any local restaurant so we got a take away and ate it out on the balcony while watching TV, it felt like home from home. Tip: if you go during Covid restrictions make sure you book your restaurants in advance.
One negative would be the additional parking charge, I feel that it should have been included in our night's stay given the rate. I was aware that it is included if you book directly but it was still cheaper to book elsewhere and pay the parking.
I would like to revisit this hotel when Covid is over to get the full experience. The owner was/is doing his best given the unprecedented times we find ourselves in.
We did the waterfall walk which was lovely (6miles). I was disappointed by Higher Sweden Bridge. However, the views on the way down was worth the additional walk up.

My daughter and I stayed at Brathy for a weekend recently and loved the place! It’s In an ideal location in Ambleside no more than a minute from all the local amenities and is really clean and cosy too. The room we stayed in with en suite bathroom wa spotless and had everything we needed including tea making facilities and biscuits 🍪 yum yum!
Unfortunately due to Covid, breakfast was a bit ‘different’ but each morning a tray full of all sorted was provided which you could take back to your room if required. Cereals, fresh fruit, drinks, hot breakfast wraps.. yoghurts .. all were fresh and tasty!
We arrived after check in time but no problem as a key code was given for access and all staff and Colin in particular was very friendly and welcoming!
Oh, also a car parking space was provided which is a godsend in Ambleside as it does get very busy!!

That is correct we will be reverting back to our very popular continental buffet style breakfast that has served Brathay Lodge well over the last 21 years.
You can catch the main line from London to Oxenholme and change there to Windermere. Windermere is approx 4 miles from Ambleside (bus or taxi). We have the bus stop just around the corner approx 100 metres. Lake Windermere is 15 minutes walk, you can catch the boat returning to Ambleside etc. Thank you
