Nestling in a stunning rural setting in the historic Rydal Valley amidst the fells, this grand Victorian building was built as a farm house in 1848 from the stones of ancient Rydal Hall, before being converted into a Country Guest House in the early 1930's. Set in our own 2 acre gardens Crow How is the perfect base to explore the beautiful Lake District with many of the popular fell walks from our door.

Detailed Reviews
The location of Crow How has the best of both worlds - very, very quiet set in glorious scenery, yet conveniently just a few minutes' drive (but also walkable) from Ambleside, for restaurants, shops, etc. The house itself is beautiful with a timeless elegance; the bedrooms are appointed to the highest standard with all sorts of thoughtful touches, such as a mini fridge. When we awoke in the morning and looked out of the window, we were rewarded with the most stunning sky, illuminating the surrounding mountains with a gentle orange glow intertwined with the stillness of an early morning mist. Breakfast was superb - top-notch Eggs Royale being one of several alternatives to the usual full English. I would certainly consider staying here again.

Property's Favourite Review
We booked Crow How last minute as we needed a place to stay before our holiday cottage was available. We took the last room available, and honestly weren't expecting a lot for last minute. We were so pleasantly surprised at how nice the room was, and especially how beautiful the view was from our room. The breakfast in the morning was cooked to order, and delicious, and the owners could not have been friendlier, even letting us leave our car for the morning until we could check in to our cottage. The location is an easy walk into town for meals, and even after dark, there was a pavement the entire way and felt perfectly safe. There is also a number of great hikes right from the doorstep, and the hotel has well written guides in the rooms with some of the more popular routes.
The room had a very comfortable bed, sitting area, nice shower, and a mini-fridge, so definitely would have been perfect for a longer stay.
We will definitely stay here again when we're back in the Lakes!

This is a beautiful b&b just a ten minute walk from Ambleside .The location is very peaceful with beautiful views over the Countryside . The rooms are very tastefully decorated.. Our room was pale grey and white and was spotlessly clean . There is also a lounge area for guests which had been recently decorated and looked very inviting .
Breakfast was perfect .The quality of produce was excellent ,and all freshly cooked to order. I must congratulate the chef on the perfect poached eggs and a very tasty eggs Benedict.
There is also seating in the garden which we enjoyed after we walked back from our evening meal in Ambleside .There are a number of nice places to eat in Ambleside all within walking distance .
We thought this was the perfect b&b and will definitely be back .

Our third visit to Crow How in recent times was as good as our previous visits. Perfectly located, a 10 minute walk into Ambleside and a stones throw from the beautiful countryside of the Langdale's, Crow How offers a secluded quiet hideaway with great views from well appointed, recently refurbished and clean rooms overlooking the area of Rydal. The breakfast is superb with so much choice it is difficult to choose. Vegetarian / Vegan choices are also on offer

From start to finish great hosts in a great setting ideal for walking the fells or strolling into Ambleside. We stayed in a triple room 9 with great views of loughrigg fell and the garden. We were looked after from start to finish nothing was too much trouble for the hosts and the rooms and everywhere else is spotless plus the breakfast is spot on with a great choice to set you up for a days walking. We will return Many Thanks.

I went with my Wife to attend a wedding .
The location of Crow How is ideally situated close to all main resorts and lovely walking areas.
Breakfasts are excellent , well cooked and no evidence of fat on the plate
The proprietors are very helpful with a good knowledge of the area .
If getting up stairs is a problem avoid rooms 5 and 6

In a sentence, tired, cold and not particulary friendly.
Bed noisy and uncomfortable pillows cheap.
The shower thankfully was hot and powerful which was a godsend as the heating didn't go on until gone 7am - in the middle of winter!
The communal lounge had a wood burner, which at no point during our stay was lit. Guests even sat eating a takeaway in their coats it was that cold in there!
Breakfast was only served 8.30-9.30am no option of having it earlier, which limited the day. On the plus side, the lady who ran the breakfast room was friendly and attentive.
Had the owner bothered to ask how our stay was I would have told her to her face however she was too bothered carrying on a conversation she'd been immersed in for 10 minutes already.
We have stayed in plenty of 5☆ guest houses/hotels which deserved their award, however, in my opinion this place did not.

+1
Lovely country house, beautiful room (room 4), spacious quality bathroom, reliably good breakfast. Didn't meet many staff members but the lady who served our breakfast Tue/Wed had the perfect balance of efficiency and warm/ friendly.
We recommend walking through the fields to the stepping stones water crossing to get to the quiet road to get to Ambleside with minimum pollution. The stepping stones can be a challenge for some (including myself) but worth it

My wife and I have just got home following a short stay at Crow How.
The B&B is in a beautiful location, close enough to Ambleside to wander in, but far enough out to avoid the crowds and noise.
It’s immaculately presented throughout and the owners and staff are friendly, with nothing being too much trouble.
Breakfast is lovely, and is freshly cooked with plenty of options on the menu.
We will definitely be back.

We stayed at this guest house 22-25th September in Premier Room 1. We were lucky to get in due to a cancellation and it was defintely the best of luck! A beautiful guest house with a lot of history. Everywhere was absolutely spotless, there were hand sanitisers on entry and at every stopping point and a screen at reception area. The room was also spotless and very tastefully decorated with tea/coffee facilities, biscuits and a small fridge in the room. The power shower was fantastic with plenty of hot water. Breakfast was table service with cereals etc. and cooked food on offer, basically choose what you want and cooked to order - delicious. There were two sittings so that people could keep social distance.
The lady who ran the guest house (sorry I can't remember your name!) was really nice and extremely helpful with printed guides to walks in the local area.
Ambleside town with restaurants/bars is a 15 minute walk away (I recommend booking beforehand), it is an easy walk along pavements. The last part of the walk back (~300m), although on pavements, doesn't have street lights so take your phone/torch if out late.
There are plently of lovely and challenging walks directly from the guest house so you won't need to drive unless you want to go further afield.
Will definitely be returning.
