Nestling in a stunning rural setting in the historic Rydal Valley amidst the fells, this grand Victorian building was built as a farm house in 1848 from the stones of ancient Rydal Hall, before being converted into a Country Guest House in the early 1930's. Set in our own 2 acre gardens Crow How is the perfect base to explore the beautiful Lake District with many of the popular fell walks from our door.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We booked Crow How as an emergency stay due to a severe snow fall. What a gem of a find. To be greeted by a warm welcome and a beautiful cosy house. Wonderful overnight stay. Warm cosy bedroom greeted us, with high quality of bedding and a lovely selection of hot drinks and biscuits. The bathroom also was of a higher standard so clean. Lovely big fluffy towels and very high quality of shower and shampoo products. Locally sourced Bath House. Breakfast didn’t disappoint, again very good quality of food and a good selection of choices and the best fruit salad I’ve had in a while. Overall we have decided that we will definitely go back when we have an overnight stay in Ambleside. Can’t say enough about how much we enjoyed our emergency stay at the Crow How.

Property's Favourite Review
We booked Crow How last minute as we needed a place to stay before our holiday cottage was available. We took the last room available, and honestly weren't expecting a lot for last minute. We were so pleasantly surprised at how nice the room was, and especially how beautiful the view was from our room. The breakfast in the morning was cooked to order, and delicious, and the owners could not have been friendlier, even letting us leave our car for the morning until we could check in to our cottage. The location is an easy walk into town for meals, and even after dark, there was a pavement the entire way and felt perfectly safe. There is also a number of great hikes right from the doorstep, and the hotel has well written guides in the rooms with some of the more popular routes. The room had a very comfortable bed, sitting area, nice shower, and a mini-fridge, so definitely would have been perfect for a longer stay. We will definitely stay here again when we're back in the Lakes!

We have stayed in several B&B's over the years but none of them come close to Crow How. The room was lovely, the en suite would not have been out of place in a top hotel and the breakfast's were absolutely gorgeous. Added to all this the location and the views you will not fail to be impressed.

Lovely Cosy and peaceful guesthouse around half mile (10min) walk from Ambleside. Lovely views from the spacious room 4, which had a fabulous bathroom with spa bath, and power-shower. The room was comfortable and warm. Cooked Breakfast was very good.

We really enjoyed our stay at Crow How! I've been driving past the Crow How sign on the road between Ambleside and Rydal for the past 40 years and finally decided that I need to find out what lies behind the rocky outcrop that hides Crow How from the main road. We weren't disappointment. Lovely property and lovely luxurious rooms with huge beds. Ours looked out onto the hills and the Coffin Route. Will definitely return!

Lovely setting close to Rydal water. The room had everything that you needed, including a fridge. Plenty of tea, coffee & milk provided. The bed was extremely comfortable & we had a great sleep. The bathroom was luxurious and had the bonus of underfloor heating. Location was perfect. A 15 minute walk into Ambleside.

A simply fabulous place to enjoy and explore the Lakes. A classic country house set in lovely grout and views to mesmerize with staff that allows you to rest relax and recuperate in luxury. Only regret is that we didn’t stay longer. Perhaps next time

This place was our chosen stay after ending 18 days of travelling the NS500. We have stayed here four times and it never gets old. The house is a lovely old farm mansion, lovingly remodelled to modern standards of plumbing, heating and so on. We have stayed in room 1 (with a giant four-poster) and room 4, with stunning views of the mountains and fields. Can't decide which room we loved the most! The beds were fabulously comfy, lots of hot water for the shower in beautifully appointed bathrooms. Breakfasts were great, with all manner of choices. The vegetarian offers were delicious, and full-Scottish was much relished by my partner. It is truly a five-star place, with five-star staff. When we return to Scotland, we will surely be back to Ambleside and Crow How.
