Nestled next to a picturesque lake and offering easy access to Coniston village, The Coniston Inn is frequently applauded for its scenic location and inviting, cozy atmosphere. While its grounds are well-kept and the inn is pet-friendly, some travelers have expressed that the price doesn't quite match the quality of service, accommodations, and dining. Rooms are noted to be clean but often criticized for being overheated and in need of an update. Despite some staff members receiving praise for their friendliness, the overall service is perceived as slow and inconsistent.

We stayed here during the heatwave in July so appreciate our experience may have been a little different had it been cooler. In summary we would definitely stay here again but maybe not in the height of summer with our dog. It didn’t feel particularly dog friendly in the heat, and even if it had been slightly cooler in temperature the hotel just isn’t equipped or setup very well for a hot summer day.

The hotel is recently refurbished so the rooms are really nice and clean. My main gripe with our room was that it was facing the sun, and we were on the top floor so it was extremely hot, in total we ended up with 3 fans in there and it was still unbearable. Our poor dog really really struggled to the point we were nearly going to leave. I asked whether there was the opportunity of changing rooms so the other side of the hotel in some shade but was told, with very little empathy of my situation, that there was nothing free until the Saturday. That was fair enough but throughout the rest of my stay I saw the cleaners cleaning the rooms opposite us and new guests arriving so I was disappointed by this. I think for summer, the hotel should really consider investing in some air con as it really did put a dampener on our stay. The only other thing with the room was the shower (if you can call it that), there was no pressure and the temperature was all over the place.

The location of the hotel is great, it’s right on the lake with spectacular views and easy walking distance of the village. We took a drive round the lake (and to cool down with air con) and there were lots of forests and small pebble beaches, restaurants etc, definitely worth an explore! There were outdoor wooden cabins that were situated in the grounds and near the lake at the hotel which would be ideal to sit in and picnic in throughout the day but they were all taped off so we were limited to the grass. However, on our last day the tape was removed and they were free to sit in, not sure what changed from the day before.

The food was lovely, but the dining experience was ruined a bit by lack of flexibility. There’s a lovely outdoor area to have drinks but you’re not allowed to eat outside, only inside. Which would be fine if the restaurant had air con or at least a fan nearby. Instead it was stiflingly hot and not an enjoyable dining experience. Again, the hotel just doesn’t seem setup for summer. One evening I asked if we could swap tables as the sun was directly on us and unbelievably hot (windows were shut because of flies) but they said the one I was looking at was reserved, yet we were there and hour and a half and nobody used the table.

Overall the hotel was good and I’d stay here in cooler conditions or if they had air conditioning. However for what we paid and the unbearable heat of the room / dining areas, being unable to use our room as I’d have liked, I was disappointed and I’d have expected more.

We recently spent a long weekend (3 night) break at The Coniston Inn, something we have been promising ourselves since enjoying a weekend there almost two years previously At that time it was under different ownership, named The Waterhead Inn, and was roughly half the size it now is.

We arrived in heavy rain at 3.30pm on the Thursday, and the rain seldom left us throughout our stay ! We checked in at the bar (a one-way system operating on entering and exiting, and were given the key to Room 42. Situated on the second floor, we were thankful that there is now a lift, saving us a walk of some 42 stairs ! A nice double room with a lake view, the bathroom had a bath and shower, but little in the way of storage space. Our shower was also very weak, little more than a trickle.

Arriving at the bar for pre-dinner drinks, we were shown to a table and of course everything was table service. We were not given a choice of table, but occasionally were not happy with the choice, but the staff were willing to move us if we felt too close to others, or too close to the door. To exit the bar/dining area we were supposed to go outside and down some steps, but the 'one way' system was thankfully ignored by the staff during very wet weather, so long as everyone took care not to crowd each other.

We enjoyed our evening meals from a varied and interesting menu. We particularly enjoyed the Persian Lamb and the Sea Bass Fillet, ordering these two evenings in a row ! Breakfasts were also excellent, cooked to order and served on hot plates. The breakfast staff were particularly pleasant and efficient, tables being cleared and sanitised very quickly.

All in all we had a very enjoyable and relaxing stay, our only gripe being the number of dogs present in the hotel, staying with their owners. Not a major issue for us so long as certain rooms are designated as being 'dog friendly', but it puzzles us why their owners insist on bringing their pets down for meals, both breakfast and dinner ! Maybe a designated dining area ought to be considered in the future.

We stayed for a week in this beautifully extended and refurbished inn which was a former hotel.
The location, just beside the lake, a glorious view of The Old Man of Coniston and within an easy walk of the village, was perfect.

Even though it had only been opened for a few weeks, you could still smell the new carpet !! and the staff were rushed off their feet with full bookings and getting to grips with new systems they were all very friendly, efficient and accommodating.

The various Covid control systems worked well with hand sanitisers placed in strategic places and a one way system in and out out of the bar.

The food was really good and even though we ate out a couple of times in Coniston village, just down the road, we found the quality and choice at the inn was much better.

We found the staff to be very welcoming to non residents also and on a few occasions wet, soggy campers would turn up to be fed and watered and to enjoy the warmth and hospitality the inn offered.

Dogs are also very welcome and the staff all appear to enjoy having them to stay, they are allowed into the restaurant all through the day and I must say all the ones we came across were very well behaved.
They appear to be very well catered for with plenty of water bowls around the grounds and hoses positioned for washing down muddy dogs and boots.

All in all this was a perfect week and we felt very fortunate to have been able to stay.

After staying at the Swan Grasmere the previous night we were expecting really good things from this sister hotel which we were told had been refurbished . The Swan was excellent so we were expecting good things.
We arrived early fabulous location, we had coffee in the lovely bar/dining area. The lovely lady we checked in with told is our rooms were ready so we were allowed to check in early. We were on the second floor room 33 the Cinderella room because it is an attic room. My husband is six foot and was unable to stand upright in part of the room unfortunately it was the side of the bed he likes to sleep on. The heating wasn't working. We informed reception who quite frankly did not believe it. When we explained that our friends room was toasty she said she would get it looked at. We were out for the afternoon exploring this beautiful village. We requested a window table for drink when we arrived back and were informed by a very lovely barman that would be our table in the evening. Back the room radiator was on but the towel radiator in the bathroom was still off in. We decided not to bother about it as we were only staying the night. The shower is small and anyone in the large side may struggle. There is a hospitality tray iron and hairdryer. We went down for dinner and our table had been given to someone else the barman apologised and to be honest it was no big deal. I ordered mushroom pasta with chicken it was lovely and hot although lacking in mushrooms and taste even with two packets of black pepper and half a bowl of parmesan added to it. The staff were very attentive and nothing was a bother a credit to the hotel. Breakfast was lovely. Would I come back? Yes because the staff and location are excellent

We stayed 2 nights (Friday / Saturday) in early September. The inn is a newish addition to a North-East pub/inn chain and has been extended and refurbished : stylised pub/restaurant theme (old pictures, rustic signs, wood paneling) delivering a pleasing dining ambience. However, our attic “fell view” room was basically furnished giving the impression that the money had ran out after the extension : a standard double bed, basic bedding, furniture and bathroom fittings. This would not have been such an issue had we paid £120 a night instead of almost £200. We had dinner on one night in the restaurant and thought the menu offered too much choice - both our main dishes were of average quality and quite expensive; breakfasts were also only average.

All the hotel staff we met were very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, our overall impression of the inn/pub was only average - 5* for staff ; 2/3* for the room and food and so we wouldn’t recommend the inn to our friends and family for a stay. We acknowledge that the hotel is marketing itself as a pub/inn but with 40+ rooms, the balance appears wrong and the room quality/standard is too low for the price.

Several pros and a few cons for staying here. The bar and restaurant were really nice and welcoming and it was lovely to see dogs with their owners at breakfast and dinner. The staff were the nicest and friendliest we’ve had at a hotel for a long while. It seems Coniston Inn has just reopened after a big revamp, but I think most of this was downstairs as the room, although it was big, wasn’t what you would aesthetically expect for a £200 a night stay, it was a bit basic. The room was really warm, a fan was provided in the room, but this had to be on all night. The window didn’t open far due to safety and I think the kitchen was below our room so not ideal to have it open. Room number 22 for reference! Better pillows would also have been appreciated. Tea and coffee making was provided in the room. We did really enjoy our stay though, the location is great. You can easily walk into Coniston to other places to eat and drink and down to the lake. There are several nice walks from the Inn to do. Breakfast was really good as well, one morning we had a full English, another eggs benedict and we had to leave before breakfast the last morning for which they provided a packed breakfast. All very Covid safe.

we booked for 4 nights utilising the walk in deal which includes breakfast every morning, evening meal on one night 2 pints ( you can have any drink) and a packed lunch on one day, and the dog came free. Our room was a standard room, but was more than spacious enough, with room for our dogs basket, and he is a big dog and he had plenty of room. and the beds were super comfy. The Bathroom clean and and recently the hotel has been refurbished. We were given two large fans for the room as the week was averaging between 25 and 32 degrees, so scorching hot. The grounds had summer houses you could make as your out door base, a jetty to launch your water craft from, the Hotel sits right on the lake. The food was excellent plenty of of choice at breakfast and evening meals were superb. Now the next great thing was the staff, polite hard working and friendly. I will apologise in advance if I miss any names out, Courtney you are a star ! you and the lovely Flo served us most of our stay with Jamie as well, Flo's brother helped my husband out one evening on the lake thank you again. Dave the maintenance chap well, you had a go on my Hubby's Efoil and stood up on your first go ! Nice to meet you all, the bar staff were great and helpful, all in all that welcoming feeling from the team, made our holiday more special, The housekeeping team were so helpful bringing an extra fan and top ups for our room, The high levels of service and the breakfast chef thank you for poaching my eggs until they were cooked through and pale yellow. Its such a special place The Coniston Inn, everything available on your door step. we only used the car to drive to the base of Old Man Coniston for my husband to climb, and to get some more dog food. We would go again, and we do go at weekends, and have travelled up after work as well during the week, But I do recommend this hotel, and believe the Chain of Hotels are all very nice. The also accept the Blue Light Card so you can save as well on Food and Drinks.

~ Clean and Modern Hotel

~ Excellent Food

Courtney Dave Jamie and Flo hope to see you and everyone soon thanks again.

It is an old property located in a stunning location. Amazing emerald green grounds leading to a calm and tranquil lake. The small Bandas scattered around the lake edge invites one to sit at leisure and enjoy the views. Providing a neatly folded blanket placed in a basket in the bandas was a nice touch. However the property lost full marks for us as out of the 2 rooms booked for our party of 4, one of the rooms allocated to us was a differently abled/ wheel chair friendly room. As such, the room though spacious was not ergonomically suitable for us ( eg shower curtains that did not quite reach the floor so everytime we took a shower the whole washroom was splashed with water, washbasin and mirror at lower height etc.). What was worse, as it is a pet friendly hotel, I assume a previous guest had a 'furry friend' staying with him/ her in the room as the washroom stank of dog pee. Despite our reporting this to the reception nothing was done about that ( although at check out the young lady there assured us that the house keeping had been in the room to clean. Didn't make any difference that we could notice though). ideally even if that was the last room available they should have at least asked us if it was ok with us to take that room. A stinking washroom in any case is unacceptable for a hotel of that calibre. The management was either very short handed or indifferent, in either case no reason to short change paying customers.

The scenery is beautiful as is the hotel and more so now it’s adorned with Christmas spirit. The staff are friendly, warm & very welcoming. A very special thanks to Sarah, Tom & Team who couldn’t do enough for us especially tackling an unfortunate county wide power outage on our second night due to Storm Arwen. Temporary lighting were put on all tables within minutes whilst trying to deal with people waiting for food with substitute options. The food is fantastic so thank you so much Ross & Team for creating such wonderful dishes. If you want an escape with beautiful surroundings, fabulous staff & great food then this is your place ! The pooches loved it too … we cannot wait to come back.

We stayed in room 2 ground floor - no noise at all from the car park at the side with a great view across the grounds. We have a partially sighted dog so it worked well for her. Amenities were good, clean and functional with everything well thought out. The fan was a blessing as rooms a little toasty at times, beds super comfy with lovely white linen. Food options are great and had a great buzz about the place. Staff are just superb and so helpful, it will be our new haunt from now on.

Had a lovely three night break with my husband. Safety at this time is being taken seriously with staff wearing masks, guests expected to wear masks unless at a table or in their room and hand sanitiser readily available.
Victoria and Graham have to be highlighted for praise. Their customer service and guest interaction was excellent. Victoria will ensure your dog puts on a couple of pounds, as well as you during your stay, with her dog treats.
Fantastic location on the lake shore and a short walk into the village. Highly recommended.
