We spent Christmas at Yew Tree Farm, it’s an incredible experience as it’s a Grade 2 listed building, set in the most beautiful scenic area and also a working farm. I felt privileged to be able to stay in such a historic building. Inside it’s decorated in William Morris wallpaper, with creeky floors and beams and wonderful old furniture. The bathrooms, all three of them are well equipped with strong pressure showers and one has a wonderful huge bath. Three bedrooms, two with four poster beds, and one twin have crisp white linen and heavy duvets all of exceptional quality. There’s a well presented dining room which I dressed for Christmas with paper chains and fairy lights. There was a Christmas tree provided and little Christmassy touches throughout. The living room with an open fire was cozy and comfortable and you could almost feel the history of the place. Every attention to detail with lamps and fittings all appropriate to the building. There was a secure stone walled private garden, where my Schnauzer dog played and around the side of the property a hot tub which was the perfect place to spend an evening. The kitchen has everything you could need to prepare a full Christmas dinner or any other meal you may care to make. The property is well situated, for walks and close enough to visit Ambleside and Hawkshead. The owners work and live on site but are busy and you really only see them about their jobs, though it was nice to know they were about if we needed them. I would recommend this accommodation to anyone looking to stay in a place both beautiful, and full of charm.

My best friend got married at Yew Tree Farm this past August (2022). Being from the states, we came over and made 2.5 weeks out of it, but spent 3 nights in Coniston. She and the groom brought in yurts for guests to stay on property, but having two small children, we didn't think it wise to opt for that situation...wedding guests keeping them up late into the night and the littles waking up hungover party-goers early morning. So, we traveled back and forth from town each day to visit. This property is so lovely! As wedding guests, to have free-reign of the space for the time we were there was amazing! The groom set up a video viewing area in the barn one night. I love the Beatrix Potter history of the house! It's dark and dusty (as I've found most older homes and pub/hotels in the UK), but is quaint and filled with history. The kitchen is small, but the other rooms seemed to be perfect! The barn (where the reception was held) was a FANTASTIC space! So beautiful! It brought together rustic charm and English garden with all of the beautiful flowering plants around it. Food was catered onsite throughout the time we were there. Obviously for the wedding, but the happy couple also brought in meals for themselves and the yurt guests and we enjoyed it on the front lawn while the littles played croquet and other yard games. My friends have a dog, so pets were welcome and there were cats and dogs on property and obviously farm animals-namely sheep with cows on the hill across the road. The kids enjoyed playing in the creek and running in the fields. Other littles warned us of stinging or prickly nettles around. We don't have a history with these, so I tried to just keep my kids near the buildings. The owner is a photographer/artist (I believe mainly of animals), but she captured some beautiful photos of my girls on the property that I'll treasure forever. Although not staying on property, we felt welcomed and enjoyed the time we spent here!

We had a wonderful morning at Yew Tree Farm, learning more about the history of farms and Herdwicks (which all of us absolutely love) in the Lake District in a very friendly setting with expert Jo. We were able to ask questions as she guided us through a fascinating array of information. After the talk, we had a walk round the back of the farm, chatting about various aspects (and working out what the mass of beetles were that had appeared!) and ending up at the field where she has the sheep who are happy to interact with humans. Obviously, we should never normally approach sheep but these Herdwicks are kept for this purpose - after a feed we sat down to interact more with them. They were loving the attention and it was great to see their different characters! Afterwards we were able to pick up some meet from the Heritage Meats shop (great to also see the butcher aspect) thanks to Jon. A fantastic morning which we would highly recommend. Thank you!

Just had a fantastic time at Yew tree farm on the Herdwick sheep experience. I can’t tell you how good it was being so close to the lovely sheep. You literally sit down and they come to you for feeding and stroking. Thanks to our tour guide Mel - her knowledge about these Herdwick sheep is amazing and she explains all about them before you go and see the sheep. 🐑
A day out my wife and I will always remember. I urge you to book and go for yourself - you won’t be disappointed.
Thanks to all on the farm for the best experience in the Lakes

Wonderful experience at the Herdwick experience at Yew Tree Farm. Our very knowledgeable host Jo was so informative and friendly and happy to answer any questions we had about the gorgeous Herdwick sheep and the wonderful diverse work they do on the farm. The sheep were obviously well loved and meeting them made for an unforgettable experience.

Bought a Herdwick Experience voucher for my wife as a Christmas present and used it when were on holiday in the Lakes in June. We both had a lovely time and it was very interesting to hear about the history, especially as the farm was once owned by Beatrix Potter who was instrumental in ensuring the preservation of the unique Herdwick sheep breed. The talk takes place in the barn and lasts about an hour. Then we walked a short distance up a track to meet the sheep! We fed them first and they were very enthusiastic, then we just sat down and let them come to us. Some wandered around and between us, others sat down and leaned on us and they were all friendly and happy to be hugged. It was all very interactive! We had plenty of time with them and were able to take lots of entertaining photos. An absolutely fantastic afternoon spent!
A couple of things to be aware of…you're in a field of sheep and you'll be sitting down with them, so you're going to get a bit dirty! There's a toilet on site but nowhere to buy refreshments, although the Herdwick Café is only a couple of miles away in Coniston.

We visited Yew Tree Farm yesterday for a private tour of 'The Herdwick Experience'. Upon arrival we were greeted by the wonderful Jo, a beautifully creative soul who made us feel comfortable and at home from the get go. Her passion and knowledge of the farm, wildlife, surrounding countryside and local culture was second to none, which was extended throughout the rest of the morning. As if Jo's hospitality wasn't enough, we were then led throughout the idyllic scenery of Yew Tree Farm to meet the Herdwick sheep, and without spoiling the experience for any future attendees... it was beyond anything we could have imagined. We couldn't recommended this place enough, it is a MUST for anyone looking to explore the area and have a unique experience with some friends/family/colleagues, making memories to last a lifetime. Thanks again Jo and Co, we can't wait to see you again soon.

We have just spent another fantastic self catering holiday here at Yew Tree Farm. What an absolute privilege it is to be able to stay in this house, so full of period character, charm, history and comfort. The tranquil location is stunning, and perfectly situated for the many surrounding walks and for easy access to neighbouring villages and towns. Jo and Jon are the most welcoming of hosts. The farm's Herdwick Experience run by Jo is one of the most enjoyable things you can do in the Lakes. A holiday at Yew Tree Farm is sublime. And thank you Heart of the Lakes for your super service, as always.

We booked the Herdwick Experience as a last minute thing to do after randomly finding it on the Internet whilst trying to book a pub in Coniston.
Ever since I visited the Lake District in 2015 I have fallen in love with the beautiful Herdwick sheep as they look so cute and the story behind Beatrix Potter championing them os great. Her stories hold a dear place in my childhood.
So I booked the last 2 spaces without really thinking too much about it and no preconceived ideas.
Jo gave a great interactive talk about the Lakes, the Herdwicks place aswell as about their farming and use. I learnt so much and Jo's passion is apparent.
The highlight for me was the hour spent in the fields with the sheep as we fed them and they then wandered around us coming to sit alongside us or having cuddles.

What's not to love - Mel was full of so much information about the farm, the history of the breed and landscape - we couldn't have asked for more. The landscape is absolutely stunning and the Herdwick's are truly adorable. For us, it wasn't just about getting up close and personal, it was about understanding more about the breed and the pressures they are facing to reduce flock numbers - absolutely not!
The meat is delicious, for us it's about knowing where our meat comes from and supporting British farmers in their sustainable endeavours to keep such breeds going. A fantastic experience which I would highly recommend to help support our British farmers.
