Our sixth visit to this lovely hotel. We were sad to hear that the previous owners have retired we wish them well. Welcome to the new owners, the hotel was still the high standard we were use to and we liked the very minor changes that they have brought it. We wish Jade all the very best as she returns to France, we will miss your lovely smile and your professionalism. Thank you to all the staff we will be back next year

A lovely welcoming atmosphere. The hotel has a cosy feel to it with a comfortable lounge and log fire. Our room was clean and suited our needs. The food was delicious- fine dining, served by friendly and efficient staff. We had a very relaxing stay, apart from walking up a few mountains!

We had a fantastic overnight at this hotel. I feel bad that I didn’t get the staff names. But the lady who checked us in and gave us advice on Port was exceptional. We also enjoyed being served at dinner and breakfast by the guy who has only been there a few weeks. Both of them really made our stay special with their professionalism but with a very nice homely way about them. The dinner was excellent and the whole dining experience was a pleasure. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel if you want a quality hotel in Grasmere.

We stayed at the Grasmere Hotel last week for the second time this year. We were very concerned over the drop in standards especially with the Evening Meals. The food quality and quantity was not up to the same high standard we enjoyed in March 23. Over our 3 day stay there was very little variety on the Menus. Sadly as it was September and going dark by 7pm, it would have been nice to have the garden lit up to view it from the restaurant during dinner. We noticed some minor maintenance repairs which, may be, should have been taken care of by now. On the positive side Jade was so polite and professional, her team all went out of their way to look after the guests. Unfortunately we would not recommend this Hotel at present and only award it 3 ***

I had the pleasure of staying at the Grasmere Hotel. Arriving after a busy week was a wonderful experience. The staff at check in were attentive caring and polite. The room was just perfect, lovely fresh linen, great eye for detail. Then to sit and have a perfectly prepared evening meal was the icing on the cake. The next morning I was offered a full Cumbrian breakfast, again perfectly prepared. The chef really needs a mention for the high standard of food leaving his kitchen. The owners, who I believe have recently taken over the Hotel (you would not know that given the excellent management) were at pains to ensure that everything was perfect, they too need a commendation. I will certainly return to the Grasmere Hotel, but for longer next time!

This was our first trip to the Lakes. We didn't know what to expect. The hotel looked idyllic and the reviews promised a warm and wonderful stay and great food. The hotel did not disappoint and exceeded our expectations. Kate and the staff were lovely and made our stay special. I have worked in hospitality in the past and have high expectations when it comes to eating out. Luke's food struck the perfect balance between being filling and wholesome and modern and original. The breakfasts were superb. A wonderful trip and we will be back.

I have thought about whether to write this review or not but on reflection I feel if you avoid putting anything negative there is little point referring to this site. We travelled in August to Grasmere to meet up with friends and have stayed at the Grasmere Hotel several times with various owners over the years. The hotel is imposing, in a good location with the decor reflecting a well kept hotel, although little has changed for many years and in places is looking a little tired. However it is early days and I daresay the new owners will eventually put their own stamp it. The bedrooms are clean and tidy but this time we stayed in the Walpole which overlooks the gardens. The previous owner lived on site in the house adjacent to the hotel and the bedroom window overlooks this accommodation. We have stayed in that room before but the the staff live there now rather than the owners and there was a lack of consideration with talking quite loudly on the steps leading into the house and slamming doors. The guest lounge has enough seating for residents to enjoy a pre-dinner drink or coffee after dinner and on warm days a charming garden too. Throughout our stay we only saw the owner once on our arrival, unlike before when previous owners have been very hands on liaising with guests, a lot of the day to day running is being dealt with by the staff who are pleasant and helpful. We only stayed 2 evenings and the first night the meal was definitely below par to previous visits. Several guests complained the menu was very limiting if you're staying 5-7 nights as were our friends and with the exception of one change per starter and main course with the dessert remaining the same, we felt it was not up to standard particularly when you consider how much it is to stay here on a DBB bases, it isn't cheap and so you do expect some value for money. That said the second evening meals were much improved but we did discover the usual chef was not on duty that week but whoever was cooking on the 2nd night they certainly upped their game. The breakfast offers a good choice but my husband and our friends were disappointed no baked beans were included on the Cumbrian breakfast. Overall our stay was adequate but I'm glad it was only for 2 nights, we have probably stayed at the Grasmere Hotel in better times and maybe the new owners will take time to find their stride as neither have worked in hospitality before. In the past the previous owners have talked more to their guests, not intrusive but made you feel a valued customer but with no real contact which is part of the charm of staying in a family run establishment you may as well stay somewhere that's more impersonal and probably a lot less expensive. I hope the new owners do well but they need to be more consistent in their standards as their is a lot of choice where people can stay in this area.

This was our first visit to the hotel and at first sight seemed to tick all the boxes. Beautiful lounge and light, bright restaurant area. A warm reception from the new owner, and in fact all of the young, female staff were absolutely delightful. Lovely, warm room and plenty of parking. . Our main reservation was the food. The breakfast was adequate, but would have appreciated more fresh fruit rather than large pieces of chopped apple. Banana? Blueberries? Strawberries? The hotel information promised croissants, but we were told they were no longer offered. I agree with the previous reviewer that the food did not live up to our expectation. It was a limited menu set for the whole week but with daily specials, so there was an attempt to please everyone. However, the simpler the food, the better it was cooked and presented, eg. Rack of lamb and SeaBass. Unfortunately, at 2am on our first night, a picture fell off the bedroom wall , waking us. As a result we were awake for quite a while. It was reported and we did expect the owner to make some mention of it to us, but not a word. On our last day the same picture fell again taking another with it. Small points, but it's the little things that make the difference. It's early days for these new owners, so I hope they don't mind these criticisms. Had the owner been on site on the day we left we would have discussed these points with her. We wish them luck.

We stopped two nights in September for our 39th Wedding anniversary. The hotel is in a beautiful location with stunning views all round and just outside the busy part of the village. The offer of a welcoming cup of tea / coffee on arrival was a nice touch and was very much appreciated after several hours in the car. The room that we had was a good size, very clean and extremely well appointed with a nice big bathroom, which included a large walk in shower. The public lounge was very comfortably furnished and a very pleasant place to sit. The dining room was nice and bright with its big window looking out onto the back garden. The garden was a good size and backed onto the River Rothay. It perhaps could do with a bit of TLC but it was still very nice to sit out in with a book of an afternoon. There was a good selection of cooked options at breakfast as well as fruit, yoghurt, toast and preserves. Indeed, if the hotel was just a B&B we would have been more than happy to give it five stars. Where we feel it was let down was the evening meals. The food was under seasoned and tasted bland (and we don't like overly salted food). The menu looked impressive but we felt the execution didn't match the aspiration. Also, on the first evening the service was very slow. We waited at least an hour between finishing our main course and receiving our sweet and when it arrived the parfait had melted leaving us to wonder whether it had been left standing under a heat lamp for some time. The service on the second night, and indeed both days at breakfast, couldn't be faulted, but the food on the second evening was no better. We spoke to several other guests who had stopped at the hotel previously, who agreed with our assessment of the food and pointed out that it was no where near as good as it had been on their previous visits. If it was possible to give three and a half stars we would have, however, as it is not and as one of the main reasons we had for selecting the hotel was the food, we have given it three rather than four stars.
