We visited the hotel in January and stayed in Butter Crag room for 2 nights, this was a Secret Escapes deal including breakfasts and dinners. We enjoyed our stay but thought that some improvements could be made.

The room was very large with a huge bathroom and a balcony. The bed was very comfortable and the furnishing and towels/bathrobes were good although we could have done with different pillows. It had a lot of good storage space for clothes etc. I would stay in this room again. Although it was in the roof of the building, the ceilings were high enough for my tall husband! The only minor point really was that the air conditioner, although efficient at heating the room up, was very noisy. When it was off at night, the room was very hot although we managed to cool the room down before bed the following night.

We both had a massage during our stay. This was booked in advance by email to the hotel, as a mobile therapist visits the hotel - there is no in-house therapist or treatment rooms. Although this arrangement was fine and meant that we had the luxury of massage in our room, I thought that the hotel literature could be slightly misleading on this aspect (it wasn't clear at first that it was a visiting therapist). The therapist (Penny Irvine) was excellent and we really enjoyed our relaxing massages.

We used the spa which was nice, although I had to go back to reception to get them to turn the sauna on - it seemed as if it had timed out as nobody was using it. Lovely to be able to look out onto the garden and the hills whilst relaxing.

The food was generally good. It was classed as fine dining but the dishes did vary on this. The breakfast had very good cooked to order choices. I would have liked fresh juices rather than made from concentrate. I stated that I avoided dairy products before our arrival and as we made our dinner bookings but this was not mentioned at all by any of the staff. I managed to make appropriate choices but was not given the expected guidance. I raised this with the manager on checkout and she will address this issue.

The service during dining was very mixed. The young girl and a young man were very good but there were other staff members who seemed to need constant guidance although I did feel that they were making an effort to learn. The bar service was adequate but again, perhaps some staff need more training (e.g. pouring all the tonic into my gin!) The receptionist Levi was very helpful and courteous.

This hotel is in an ideal position to walk into Grasmere and do some local walking and its atmosphere is relaxing and quiet. Overall, I felt that more attention to detail is needed for a hotel of its class but I would consider returning.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed review. Much of what you have written is exactly true and I do agree with. We are in the transition of recruiting quite a lot of staff and because it has been so busy our training schedule has been put ‘on hold’. We will endeavour to get all the training done as soon as we can and continue to offer the great food and service that our guests deserve. I’m very pleased to hear that you will return to see us again and I look forward to welcoming you back.

We have just returned from a two night stay and with everything at the moment, must firstly comment on the covid arrangements. You felt very safe and well looked after. All staff wore face masks and everything was cleaned in front of you or handed to you using napkins. Lots of hand sanitiser stations for guests to use. I had read a few negative reviews but did not experience anything that other contributors had mentioned. A very warm welcome and the room was very clean. We had booked a riverside suite and in hindsight, a different room may have been better as we found it a little dark. This was no fault of the hotel as the room had lovely doors leading out onto a patio overlooking the river. It is not the hotels fault there are lots of trees, you are in Grassmere at the end of the day. Without exception, the quality of the dinner was outstanding. We could not fault the meals in any way and must congratulate the chef and the team. You could not help but pick up on various conversations around the restaurant from people saying how much they enjoyed the meals. What was pleasing to see was that the menus did change each evening so you felt as though you were getting different choices. If you can, try the Goats Cheese Souffle or Rasberry Souffle. You will not be disappointed.

This was our 4th attempt since December 2019 to stay, and we finally succeeded. We stayed here on a ‘Lakes Lazy Break Offer in a Langdale Room and received a very nice welcome at reception where they also offered to carry our cases to our 1st floor room.
Our room (15) was a not too big but we had a comfortable nights sleep. The bathroom had a bath with a fixed glass screen at one end where there was a shower. It was not very powerful so the water spray was weak. Another problem was that the toilet was at the opposite end which left a small gap to step into the bath. It caused my wife to bang her leg on the edge of the bath resulting in a bruise. In my opinion the bathroom is in need of a makeover and therefore I can only regard the stay as Very good and not excellent.

We had a nice balcony which had a small table and two chairs. It overlooked the gardens and Riverside Spa building. The weather was hot and sunny, so we enjoyed the bottle of champagne which was on ice in our room and included in the offer as was our evening meal.

The service in the restaurant was excellent. The staff were polite, efficient and nothing was too much trouble. There was a good choice of food to select from, some incurred additional cost. The Ormskirk Carrot starter was different but my wife enjoyed it, whereas I had Scottish Loin of Rabbit wrapped in pancetta. Our mains were the steak and Sea-bass, Their own sticky toffee pudding was absolutely exquisite, the best I have tasted. We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience and had drinks in the bar afterwards.

The hotel is less than a 5 minute walk to the nearest shops, so is well placed for visiting the shops, cafes and sights of the village.

I would stay here again but would need to ensure the room had a bath and separate shower or just a shower.

Well done Rothay Garden Hotel and well done to Leanne & Ryan in particular. Nothing was too much trouble and bearing in mind the Covid 19 enforced limitations our stay was faultless. Despite no breakfast buffet, we had the same choices and no restrictions on repeats of anything we fancied. We booked Dinner B& B and couldn't fault the choices offered and they managed to adapt to allergies and requirements without any fuss. Being served by everyone wearing face coverings or visors wasn't off putting and knowing that the spa was cleaned between each user was an amazing service. We look forward to returning.

We visited in November and then again at the beginning of this month, having previously visited many times under previous management. The differences in improvements are beginning to show, in November the service didn’t flow so well but all seemed well this time. As ever the food is outstanding, plenty of choice for meat eaters and non meat eaters with a little change in menu daily so if staying a few nights plenty of choice. The spa is delightful, it would be completely brilliant if somehow a space for a pool could be found!!
My only criticism. We were lucky to find a deal through Secret Escapes which meant we could afford a loft suite (we usually stay in the cheaper rooms). I would not have been happy paying the full price. Yes the room was spotlessly clean and the bed super comfy and the toiletries and beverages good quality, but they are in all their rooms. I thought the furnishings eg lamps and sofas were very outdated and the room didn’t shout luxury.
Hope to return soon. Anyone ‘thinking’ of booking just do it. It’s a gem.

This is a great hotel with pleasant helpful and welcoming staff. The food was delicious. The spa is small but great after a day walking in the spectacular surrounding area. The gardens are lovely and the river Rothay runs along side. However it isn't quite the same since it has changed to new ownership and I suspect all the things that I found a bit bothersome come form higher management rather than the staff on the ground. So lets hope they read the reviews as we were not the only returning guests who thought the same.
Now I'm being picky but none of the things I am about to mention were ever a problem previously on my numerous visits.
From the point of booking despite choosing the correct room category, no one could or would confirm whether we would be along side the river as requested so we asked for first floor which we got but over the garden and spa, which was fine.
The bath in our room needed some maintenance, and the table and chairs on the balcony (and those rooms adjoining ) needed a good clean . Rooms were "refreshed" each day, which seemed to include straightening the bed covers and filling the water bottles we asked for more tea bags and why do hotels of this standard still use those plastic milk cartons that hold about a teaspoon of milk, please supply a decent amount of proper milk from a little fridge or something!

They insist on guests choosing a time for breakfast and dinner when booking, every thing seems to be because of covid even though all restrictions have been lifted. Although restricting 3 rooms at a time to the spa is sensible as its small but, there was nowhere to leave used towels and they were being left on the floor! The steam room didn't appear to be functioning during our stay although reception insisted it was. You are limited to 50 minutes per day which you choose on arrival and the spa is checked each hour by a member of staff between guests who sprayed some surfaces and removed the wet towels.
The food here has always been one of the main draws, it is still lovely, but the menu stayed the same both nights and other guests had stayed 5 nights with the same menu.
My main gripe sadly is price related, we had booked dinner, bed and breakfast for two nights directly with the hotel at a cost of over £800.Quite a number of dishes on the menu carried a supplement, not only that but we were given 2 drinks menus with different prices, when we pointed this out the cheaper one was swiftly removed and the prices were for 25ml measures which they don't serve as standard. Plus a "discretionary" service charge was added to food and drinks which I have never previously encountered in a hotel.
It feels that generally maintenance of both the hotel and grounds is not what it was and the high level of attention to detail no longer apparent to pervious standards.
It is such a shame, I will return despite my gripes and I am all for change if it is better for guests but here it feels its become much more about profit than guest experience.

Dear familyD10, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay. Yes a lot has changed in the last few years and the Pandemic and now Cost of Living crisis has made us change things here at Rothay, but we feel that these are for the better and we want to ensure that all guests enjoy their stay with us. I would like to pick up on a couple of things if I may to clarify why we now do these now: We do not guarantee rooms for customers which is a standard procedure across most hotel groups. We try our very best to accommodate everyone's wishes but we do not guarantee as we cannot always fulfill. The bathrooms are about to undergo a transformation later on this year as yes we agree that they are now starting to look a little tired. With the service change, this is noted in various places including our terms and conditions, menus, website, and/or registration card which you sign on check in just to name a few where information is provided to you. Our menus change every six weeks and we feel that alongside the classic options that we offer, our food standards are higher than ever with the dishes that we provide. We believe that there is enough choice for you during your stay whether it be one night or one week. Our restaurant has been hugely impacted by the Cost of Living Crisis which I am sure you have noticed yourself as you do your weekly shop, but we do not want to lower our standards and want to give all our guests a dining experience. My team and I very much look forward to welcoming you back again to Rothay Garden Hotel. Kind regards Chris Tomlinson MIH, General Manager

Stayed in a Grasmere room with balcony overlooking the river. Lovely spacious bedroom with a spacious bathroom with separate shower and a spa bath. It didn’t mention on the details of the room about there being a spa bath, so that was a nice surprise. I thought the bedroom had a slight bit of a corporate feel about it, though photos of bedrooms on the website don’t look slightly corporate. Was nice to have the balcony though it wasn’t warm enough to sit out. Was nice to hear the river babbling though and to see a heron below.
The restaurant is attractive and the tables by the window are lovely looking out over the well maintained garden. Saw a red squirrel one day in the garden. Good choice at breakfast with everything being table service, no buffet, due to Covid restrictions. Personally, I’d have preferred the bacon and eggs cooked for longer. Evening meals lovely but would have liked more vegetables. The restaurant seemed a bit short staffed, though all the waiters were friendly as were other staff members.
Due to Covid restrictions, we could have the spa all to ourselves by a half hour slot by room. I thought that was great and I think the hotel should keep it by half hour slot by room after all this (hopefully) is over.
It’s a short walk to the village from the hotel and there’s adequate parking so that’s all good too. My husband was very impressed with the hotel as was I and we’d like to return.
This next comment has nothing to do with Rothay Garden. Me and my husband were walking in the village when two ladies came right up behind me (well within two metres!) and one of them said “It’s all these tourists coming here spreading Covid while us living here are socially distancing and not giving each other Covid”. Well us tourists are having our temperatures taken, are wearing masks (actually bought a very pretty one in the garden centre nicer than Marks and Sparks), sanitising our hands, keeping our distance and keeping to regulations. I don’t think the hospitality industry would be too keen on comments like that as surely they all need “us tourists” helping the economy.

We were supposed to go to Thailand but given the virus situation we decided to head to the lakes knowing it would be quiet and we could still be safe. This place is impressive as soon as you walk in. Beautiful decor and super cosy feel. We were given a river view room with a balcony which was wonderful being able to sit and listen to the water. Ebony and all the other staff made us feel so welcome and like nothing was too much trouble. An absolute credit to the hotel, especially in what was unknown territory for us all. When all the pubs and restaurants were told to shut on Friday night, they advised us that Saturday dinner would be served in our room. They made it so special bringing in a proper table and laying the table like they would do in the restaurant. We even bothered to get “top half dressed up” for the occasion 😄 Food was wow! Fishcake, duck salad, pork and fillet steak cooked to perfection. We’re sad to be leaving under these circumstances and we will 100% be back as soon as we’re able to experience the hotel and Grasmere in all its glory!

We had booked this hotel for a two day break prior Christmas. The weather was terrible so we had stopped in Keswick for coffee and a sandwich we tried to ring the hotel three times to see if we could book in early but on all occasions the phone was not answered. When we arrived fortunately we could book in early. Some friends asked the hotel about availability so they could join us the hotel said they would contact them if any rooms became available. The hotel never called them and on checking there were rooms available. Empty rooms mean lost business. My wife advised reception the hand wash lotion bottle was empty reception said we will follow you up to replenish two hours later we brought the container to reception to be refilled. At breakfast I ordered fresh fruit salad I received a very small ramekin with a gape, apiece of apple, a small piece of pineapple, and a slice of mandarin orange the staff advised us the hotel had difficulty in getting fruit. In the evening at dinner when my main course was served after one mouthful I had a large hair in my mouth. I sent the meal back the staff dealt with the situation but by the time a replacement meal was served my wife had finished her meal, not very satisfactory.
On my return home I wrote a letter to Mr Tomlinson outlining all these issues, after one week and no word from the hotel I telephoned and the reception said they would leave him a note to ring me. The following day I telephoned again and left a message which I was told he will ring you after his meeting the same day I e mailed the hotel when I had not received a call again I was told he would definitely ring me. Now three days later no telephone call. We will not be staying at the ROTHAY. Garden again but go back to Bowness to the Bellsfield Hotel where customer service is excellent.

Dear "David B", Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us at Rothay Garden Hotel. I am sorry we were unable to take your call on your day of arrival. We do send out a number of emails prior to arrival outlining our check in time and it is on our terms and conditions also. As we are still dealing with the effects of the current pandemic, we are taking a much larger number of calls from guests enquirying about covid related matters and indeed cancelling and amending bookings over the phone which is time consuming. We also have a number of repeated calls about the same things which clog our phone lines. I am sorry you were dissatisfied with our breakfast offering. As you will have seen from the menu we offer our Cumbrian Platter as our second course for breakfast. This consists of fresh fruit, pastries, meats and cheese. We try to reduce our food waste and also not over face our guests however should you wish for any more of anything we will happily oblidge. We do not serve dishes with hair in. You referenced a letter in your many calls to my team. I am pleased to say this has arrived this morning upon the restarting of the postal service after the festive shutdown and subsequent bank holidays and I will be very happy to have a call regarding this. With regards to not calling you back over Christmas, with respect, many people would regard a call at this time poor customer service for which you have already alluded to in your comments. I sincerely hope you enjoy your time at The Belsfield; any visitors to The Lakes, regardless of where they stay, can only be a good thing for our local economy. Thank you for continuing to support this. Kind regards Chris Tomlinson MIH General Manager

We have really enjoyed our week at the Rothay Garden, and have felt fully looked after by the attentive and friendly staff team - with a special mention to Ashley, whose energy and enthusiastic approach to providing fantastic service is a real asset to the lovely hotel.

Our first floor room (18) was clean and fresh with delightful outside areas on two balconies overlooking both the beautiful garden and the river and hills. Although lacking a fridge, fresh water with ice was provided on request, as was any cleaning or refreshing of the room. (Regular housekeeping is currently unavailable due to Covid-19.)

The restaurant is airy and modern, facing the garden, and the food variety and standard is excellent, served by attentive and friendly staff. Breakfast is a la carte, prepared to order.

We frequently enjoyed the spa, especially after hiking. It provides a sauna, aromatherapy room, heated loungers and a spa therapy pool looking out on the forest side hills. Drinks afterwards, served on the spa terrace complete the relaxation.

We would definitely recommend the Rothay Garden Hotel and would like to thank the whole team for such a great time.
