A fairytale gothic mansion, forest side is the fulfilment of a romantic dream. Set in the magical lake district landscape of wordworth's beloved grasmere, this beautiful house charmed visitors for over a century before falling into disrepair. But, like sleeping beauty, forest side has been reawakened. Enchanting gardens are emerging from the wilderness while our fabulous rooms are fit for any prince or princess.

It must be a nightmare being in the hospitality business at the moment, trying to balance ever changing and often unclear regulations with the expectations of customers who are paying top dollar for the experience. I'm happy to report that the good people at Forest Side managed the balance extremely well, and the impact of the covid measures did not really impact on our enjoyment of this top quality venue.
We stayed in one of the master suites, a tastefully furnished room on the top floor (be warned, no lift, but plenty of offers of assistance with luggage). Lovely touches included a flask of iced water, fresh milk with the tea and coffee, and freshly baked cakes from the kitchen. The bed was comfortable, as were all the furnishings. Best of all, a great view of the gardens and fells. The only slight issue might be that it was a tad too warm in the room, even though we turned the heating controls right down and opened a couple of windows, I suspect in high summer this might be an issue.
Unfortunately the bar is closed a while before the dining room opens, so pre-dinner drinks in the lounge were out, although they could be delivered to your room. We had the 8 course taster menu, which was stunning. In addition, one of the highlights for my wife was the gluten free bread served with dinner, usually this has the consistency and taste of cardboard, but not here, it was perfection, and she's still going on about it! The wine list is extensive, as well as expensive, the cheapest bottle is £40, and the wine pairing is £85 per person, but the quality is superb.
Service is professional and courteous, but not stuffy. The mostly young staff are attentive, well trained, knowledgeable and friendly.
So, in summary, not cheap, but well worth it, and we will be back once we've raided the kids' inheritance again...

We chose Forest Side as we have been before and felt they would deal with all the issues around the covid 19 effectively. Despite all the new innovations, hand sanitiser everywhere, pre dinner drinks at your table, it still felt special. The staff are friendly, knowledgable and helpful. The spacing of the tables meant the staff could manouevre around easily keeping socially distanced. The food as ever was delicious, the wine list is comprehensive and has some really different choices. Our room (Ash) was lovely, superb bathroom and with a lovely view over the gardens.

The six course meal was exceptionally good and those waiting on knew the detail of each dish which is always helpful. Visiting during the pandemic might have been worrisome but we felt every care had been taken to reassure us of the care taken to keep surfaces clean.
There was a tranquil atmosphere throughout and we shall definitely be returning in the near future. No criticisms at all.

So stayed here for 4 nights as we were in need of a break. Location is wonderful, set in lovely gardens with great views of the fells around Grasmere. Our room was at the top of the hotel, a high quality bathroom, lounge area and bedroom, very good overall, the carpets were a little tired and the room got very hot at night, not surprising given the hot weather, but fans a plenty were supplied. Public areas in the hotel were of a high standard, and the dinning room was excellent. To the food, the restaurant isn’t open on a Monday and Tuesday so we had to wait until the second night of our stay to try the acclaimed food. It was more than worth it, there are two set tasting menus, 4 course or 8 course. We tried both over three nights, they were absolutely superb, beautifully presented, served with panache, with a terrific wine list, they were a joy from start to finish. Finally a mention about the staff team, professional, friendly, efficient, a credit to the hotel. Would we stay again? In an instant.

Stayed a night with my mum for a special Christmas present to her. I can say that the food and staff are just as wonderful as my last visit a few years back.
We were welcomed and shown to our room by the lovely receptionist. The room was just stunning, the most comfortable hotel bed I’ve ever slept in. Great selection of teas and coffee and fresh milk in room along with iced water. Only criticism of room was that for the price, internet services on tv like Netflix would’ve been welcome ( I’ll take fire stick and try that next time)!
Pre dinner cocktails were a bit disappointing and VERY expensive. My mums tasted predominantly and a bit unpleasantly of thyme (surely should’ve just been a hint) and not at all of limoncello, kinda weird to be honest. My pine needle flavoured aperol spritz just tasted like a normal one. Pleasant enough..
Dinner was absolutely stunning though.. the 6 course tasting menu was absolutely wonderful. All waiting staff were amazing and so knowledgable and friendly, particularly Dean, who looked after us so well. The accompanying wines were equally great but I wish the lovely sommelier could just speak up a bit. He had so much of interest to say but, boy, it was hard to hear him!
Breakfast was gorgeous, all freshly cooked and more of the wonderful sourdough bread. However, the coffee was way below the standard I’d expect from Forestside. Weak, bitter cafetière/filter with cold milk. No, no, nooooooo!! This is a crucial part of breakfast in a modern, top class hotel. This is why I only gave 4/5..
I’d definitely return but would do without pre dinner drink and request a good cappuccino at breakfast!

We had occasion to visit Scotland but decided to stop in the Lake District on the return journey and chose The Forest Side Country House Hotel being one of Mr & Mrs Smith’s recommended hotels in the area.

From the friendly yet professional reception desk through to our departure the next day, all the staff were charming and well presented. It is a small world and one of the young receptionists turned out to have been a country neighbour of my family in the Scottish Borders. Her husband is the Head Chef and delivered an excellent dinner with innovative touches.

The accomodation was extremely comfortable and our Superb Room with its enormous bathroom situated on the floor level below met my wife’s expectations with one minor suggestion, viz, being a free-standing bath it would have been most helpfull if there had been a small table or similar upon which to place shampoos etc.

The dining room is elegant and welcoming and we enjoyed a lively discussion with the Head Chef after dinner.

Breakfast was equally satisfying and we set off for the M6 and the South, well contented.

We have just had a two night stay in the Forest Side Hotel staying in the Oak room which is a Master Suite with a balcony. Apparently it is the only room in the hotel with one which really enhanced our stay.

The room was lovely with a very comfortable bed, Harrison Spinks which is what we have at home. The bathroom was fabulous with plenty of quality toiletries and there was a separate living area with a sofa where the tea and coffee making facilities were. My only complaint about the room if any was that it was incredibly hot, doors and windows were left open to enable us to get some sleep.

Our stay was on a bed and breakfast basis.
This was served by extremely professional staff who were a credit to the hotel. The food served was top quality and full of flavour.

It has been a lovely two days having the experience of staying in such a lovely friendly hotel.

Our daughters gave us a voucher for dinner bed and breakfast at this beautiful hotel as a Christmas present. We sat in the bar in the afternoon in front of the log burner with coffee and scones and a game of Scrabble which was a prefect start to our stay. The room was pretty and the extras make it more luxurious with quality and eco friendly toiletries. The Lal ‘Un menu at dinner was beautifully presented and consistently delicious from start to finish. We had a fabulous English sparkling wine with dinner and it rivalled more expensive champagnes I have had. The wine list is on the expensive side but it is I believe it is largely organically sourced and that always salves my conscience when indulging. Whilst we did have an issue with some noise in the room( due to an issue with a fan and not a recurring problem that the hotel could have predicted) it was dealt with in a professional manner and the staff went out of their way to make sure it did not taint our stay. Once the issue was resolved I slept very comfortably. Eggs Benedict at breakfast was lovely. The staff were all friendly and professional but the receptionist(Jess I think) was particularly warm and welcoming and she makes an excellent impression when you first arrive.
I am thoroughly looking forward to returning to Forest Side and my daughters are happy that we were so well treated.

We stayed for two nights on B&B and 8 course dinner . I’m going to split this review into two, hotel and dining.

Hotel
Hotel grounds are lovely , as you drive up the building and gardens are really beautiful. We had paid for a master bedroom (top grade). We were greeted by a very young front of house , who to us seemed to be inexperienced . Not what you expect when you’ve paid £780 for two nights . We were shown the bar and terrace which were nice and then our room. The weekend we stayed it was hot in the UK, but the room was unbearable. They have put two fans in, that you literally had to sit on to feel any benefit , a hotel of this quality should invest in better fans, I totally understand not wanting to pay for air conditioning for the few weeks we need but at least aim to make your guest comfortable . I asked if we could change rooms , she said there wasn’t any, I said can we swap tomorrow she said no. I don’t understand this as on Saturday I saw a number of people checking out . We had arrived quite late and my partner asked the same girl if we could get the bar to make a sandwich (we had missed the bar food for 15 mins). She said she would check so we waited in the bar. She never returned , my partner in the end went bk to reception , to which she said bring a takeaway . Again I totally understand the kitchen being closed , but at least have the decency to return and tell us . I’ve never had such bad customer service at such a top hotel

Dining
Bar staff and waiting staff were exceptional . You could have a laugh with them , they went out of their way to help and level of service was second to none . On the second night we ate in the restaurant . The food was lovely as was the service . Highly recommend. Beautiful setting . Can’t fault .

My advice is visit the restaurant but book a different hotel .

We had a fantastic stay at The Forest side to kick off a week in the Lake District. The room was gorgeous and so comfortable. Cake on arrival was a lovely touch!

We stayed with the dog and were a bit nervous about taking him to such a lovely hotel, but we shouldn’t have been. Some lovely touches for him on arrival too. We were especially pleased that it seemed like dogs were all in the same area of the hotel (a very short walk outside from the front door). If this was the case - you’d never have known it was a ‘doggy room’, it was stunning. Being here was perfect for us as we’re always a bit worried about barking - he isn’t a barker at home but sometimes gets a bit nervous in hotels when he can hear other people around. So knowing we were around other people with dogs put us at ease. It was really easy to let him out here too, and a poo bin just outside!! There was also a lovely enclosed space right outside the front of the hotel for us to give him a run around too (fortunately the sheep weren’t out).

The food was divine, and well worth the visit. We had the 8 course menu but didn’t fancy the whole wine fleet (long walk planned the next day!), but there was an option to have ever other wine; which was perfect for us. I don’t think I’ll ever forget the pre dinner crab apple martini either!

On checkout we left a phone charger in one of the rooms, and reception kindly rang to let us know so that we could go back.

Overall a lovely stay, and hope to be back again soon!

I like to dress up and wore a nice dress and heels. Some people were dressed up and men in casual suits. Some people were more casual in chinos or jeans and a shirt. Most diners tended to be guests at the hotel, I feel you could get away with anything.

I don’t think they have a spa but they provide lovely products in their bathrooms and these are for sale at reception. Knowing the standard of Forestside I am sure they could recommend and advise on the nearest spa. It is so well worth a visit.
