I haven’t stayed at the property, but had a booking with them for last July unfortunately due to Covid, the booking was cancelled due to national lockdown, Malcolm rang me to explain and asked me if I would want to keep the booking for after the lockdown which I said yes as I would want a room for the Keswick convention when it starts again, hopefully in 2021, he begged me to keep my deposit as he was concerned that if everyone took their money he would be bankrupt, obviously I didn’t want that to happen so I said yes , he sent me an email saying it was a credit note for the deposit and that I could take the holiday next year 2021 for the convention week. I heard that the convention was starting up on the 17/07/21 and that we had to register , so I rang Malcolm and spoke to his wife who told me Malcolm was dealing with it and would get back to me, I explained the situation of having to register because of the reduced numbers at the convention, she said he would ring, a week later I rang again and spoke to Malcolm , who told me his wife was dealing with the bookings and she would get back to me, I said your wife said the same thing last week and that I needed to know ASAP that week, he said he would, I left it until the Thursday and rang again which one phone the mobile went into answer phone so left a message then later rang the other phone and that wasn’t taking messages, so still not hearing anything from them , I emailed him still no response, so as the time limit was getting near to the end for registering I still didn’t know if I had a booking or not , so I registered and messaged them again to explain and still nothing from them. I had no other option than to book another hotel, which I managed to do and rang Malcolm again and again leaving a message on his answer phone until I then messaged him that due to the lack of communication from him or his wife, I had no alternative than to ask for my deposit back as I’d had to find another hotel, also how I in faith had tried to help in some way by keeping my deposit with them , and still no reply. Today the 21/06/21 I rang and managed to speak to Malcolm and asked him why he’d not responded to my many calls and emails, and to why he had ignored my communications with them, he denied all knowledge of any calls and emails etc, I told him he had had them and that I would like my deposit back and he told me to go to hell. I don’t usually write reviews but as this has been a bad experience for me and another reviewer, I thought it was only right to let people know just what the real Malcolm is like when it comes to customer service. I wasn’t rude to him but he was to me, I was only asking for what was rightfully mine due to their incompetence and non communication to many phone calls snd messages plus email , and to warn people not to take Malcolm at his word . I think that he was waiting for me to cancel so that he would keep my deposit and book someone else in for more money . So please be aware also I noticed that his hotel is up for sale , maybe that was another reason, but as he slammed the phone down on me after telling me to go to hell, I couldn’t ask him . I can’t rate the hotel only the management, so unfortunately I can’t star them as nil is too many .if anyone thinks this is a fake review, I do have proof of my email to him although I should think all phone calls have been deleted. Also I wouldn’t waste my time writing one for the sake of it . He was willing to refund my deposit if I so required at the time of cancellation, but not now when everything is fine again, rather strange.

Let me start by saying I didn't actually manage to stay at the Lairbeck so this review is based solely on my dealings with the management. I booked three rooms for a two night stay in August. Unfortunately my area went into local lockdown. The management at the Lairbeck took the decision that we could not visit. I agree with their decision. A lock down is a lockdown. Now, the government said that despite being in a lockdown we were still able to stay away overnight. If I cancelled I would have loat my money so I left the decision to the hotel. They cancelled my stay on the 24th August. I left it a few weeks and contacted the Lairbeck as I hadn't been refunded my money. They apologised and said that they would return my money. I left it a week after I sent them my bank details. To cut a long story short after several emails, so me of which were ignored by the Lairbeck and a telephone call where Malcomlm said he wasn't aware of the booking and promising to ring me back the hotel refused to refund me as I had booked through Booking.com. I contacted Booking.com two weeks ago after the refusal of Lairbeck (despite previously saying they would refund me on an email). Booking.com have now sent me my refund. Just be warned about booking, make sure you book through an agent who will get you your money back. 9 weeks is to long to wait for a refund when you weren't the one to cancel. I know times are difficult with covid etc but we are all in this together a s it's a shame that I gave the Lairbeck several weeks to refund me and a greater shame they gave me the run around. I don't think I've ever written a review with such a low score.

Very nice hotel in a great location with a 10 minute walk into town. I have stayed in the Lairbeck in several occasions and always found the proprietors polite, friendly and helpful. Would certainly recommend this hotel for accommodation as the rooms are clean and comfortable, being just out of town ensure it’s quiet so a good nights sleep is guaranteed. It’s just off the A66 too which enables easy travel to other destinations. My thanks to Jennifer & Malcolm for another enjoyable stay, even in these testing times. Both have taken the COVID issue seriously and put good measures in place to cover any potential risk.

We had a great 2 day break here. Good base for touring the lakes. The hotel is beautiful and picturesque. Really clean accomodation and breakfast delivered to the room comprising of sausage sandwich, warm croissant with butter and conserve, yoghurt, an apple and orange juice. Would highly recommend and would definately go back.

There's a code on the front door and the room key was left in the hallway on arrival, so i didn't meet anyone who worked there until Malcolm The Manager was kicking me out. On my final morning in Keswick, I had gone for a walk that ended up being longer than expected, lost track of time and arrived back at the hotel 50mins after checkout. I apologized to Malcolm The Manager, who was angrily waiting for me at the front door. I told him I'd quickly get out of my wet clothes (freezing cold) and then leave but found that he'd emptied all of my belongings out of the room and into a bin bag. I wasn't allowed in the hotel to get changed (I'd already given up on the idea of a warm shower) and he didn't want me getting changed in the carpark. I followed him in to the empty bar (not allowed to get changed in there either) where he gave me my sack of stuff. The next couple of minutes were spent checking that all my belongings were there and packing my bags to leave, during which time Malcolm The Manager called me disrespectful for "breaking the contract" and said he'd call the police if I didn't leave in the next 5 minutes. He was angry. I was annoyed. He threatened to charge me a full extra day. I told him to fck off. Apart from my new mate Mal, the place itself is alright I guess. Agree with other reviews that it's outdated and overpriced, but I'd booked very last minute so can't really complain about that. Keswick is beautiful and I'd recommend a visit, just maybe choose somewhere else to stay.
