Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Good location between Windermere and Bowness (you can easily walk to either). Nice accommodation. Parking is a bit tight on space but they do have additional parking across the road in the Church. We did find it "different" ie everything is done online / on a tablet in the room or by text. Not complaining as it worked just different as we are used to seeing the owner / host. Though we did miss talking to someone - maybe I am just a bit old fashioned :)

Disgusting customer service! We were due to stay here on Saturday for our wedding anniversary but unfortunately due to the weather we were stranded in the car for 6 hours. I kept intouch with the owner all day and I called him and explained we were nowhere near Windermere and we unfortunately had to cancel the booking, at which point he told me he was out rescuing people! Took the room number and said he would be in touch regarding some sort of refund… I’m guessing the amount of people which were stranded our room would have been given to somebody else. We paid £171 and received nothing I was expecting a return visit as a good will gesture given the situation but I was offered a 35% discount on another visit… of course I want to pay more money towards another stay given I had already paid! I may aswell have burnt £171! And the owner called me mean and selfish when he is the one robbing people blind!! Telling me he has a £35 cleaning bill… hardly cleaning for me when I wasn’t even there! Not a nice way to treat people. Enjoy spending my well earned cash! Disgusting and day light robbery!!

Response from Ian Armitage, Owner at Glencree
Responded 4 Dec 2023
This is an example of a customer trying to blackmail us with a trip advisor review to get money which we feel is really unfair. We asked them to cancel there booking so we could re sell the room. People were desperate to book rooms due to the weather and unless they cancelled we could not re sell it. Two other customers had the same problem and cancelled there rooms which were re sold and the customers received there money back. Not cancelling the room also resulted in us paying £35 VAT and £35 commission to the on line travel agent. We also obviously have other costs associated with there stay. which could have been avoided if they had cancelled there booking as requested which as previously mentioned would have allowed us to re sell to somebody that really needed a room, avoided our costs and enabled them to receive a refund. The customer then informed us that they had no signal on there phone to cancel it but they had been messaging us through i-message so they had a date connection to be able to cancel. They also called me whilst I went out I was out in the snow to recover an elderly guest 5 miles away and I said I was a bit busy trying to help elderly people to which they still asked about there money. Unfortunately I was a bit busy getting through the abandoned cars in the snow to talk about refunds. We did offer to give them a voucher towards a future stay which they found unacceptable which meant that we made no money out of the situation and they got something back even though they didn't cancel the booking a requested. When this was not good enough they tried to blackmail us with a trip advisor review and we are sorry but we will not be blackmailed into giving money which could have been avoided if they had followed our advice about the cancelling the booking. They accused us of reselling the room even though we didn't, they accused us of not having costs associated which they told us was my problem not there's. they threatened us with customer rights and a TripAdvisor review. So for people reading this honestly we offered them a way to get all there money back (just cancel the booking) we then offered them a balanced resolution which would have mean we didn't loose any money but they also got something back and not of the solutions worked for them. Customer reviews are a great thing to help people choose where to stay and help businesses understand where they can improve but they shouldn't be used to blackmail small business,

We visited Glenncree for a birthday night away and had a wonderful experience! Ian contacted us detailing our self check in details and let us know he had upgraded our room. When we arrived we were very impressed with our room; we were in a suite with a living room, bedroom and bathroom. The decor was very modern and the whole room was really clean. The living room included a smart tv which we made use of, so we were very thankful for the upgrade! The breakfast was fantastic, all very hot and freshly made. Ian was very accommodating and a great host. Overall a lovely guesthouse, I would highly recommend!

Loved our stay at Glencree! Perfectly situated between Windermere and Bowness (5-10 min easy walk to either and safe at night). Room was spotless and tastefully decorated, better than most hotels. Had a lovely stream running past and outdoor seating for warmer weather! The host Ian was lovely and really welcoming and you were left to your own devices with codes to get in the main door and bedrooms! Tablets on the rooms were a great idea which you pre-order your breakfast on it and has all the information on the area and contacts you need on it! There is an honesty bar downstairs which we thought was a lovely idea! Rooms had all local toiletries and tea’s coffee’s! Breakfast was plentiful and delicious! Would def recommend a stay here if your visiting the Lake District!

I wrote this review before but was never acknowledged . We tried to book through Red Letter Days and spoke to a guy on the phone who said he would get back to us. We never heard a thing and rang in numerous occasions over a two week period with NO answer and no response to texts we sent. Ridiculous service !!!

Hi , Unfortunately we don’t know who you are and nobody has spoken to you so this must either be a case of reviewing the wrong place or some type of harm to a small family business. Many thanks

Most of Windermere consists of Guesthouses, this one, Glencree, is one of the smaller ones, from memory I think it only had around six rooms available. The rooms are not large, nor the bathrooms, but they are very clean, warm and comfortable, an excellent breakfast is personally served by the staff. The house has a large lounge area where you can simply sit and read or watch TV. On our arrival, we were met by the owner and his staff, all lovely people. If driving, we aware that the premises only has space for 3 cars to park and so, you may have to park away from the Guesthouse. The House is located about a 15-20 minute walk from the township and Lake Windemere and so there are not throngs of people in the immediate vicinity. An easy walk to the multitude of Restaurants and Pubs. Would definitely recommend this Guesthouse as a quiet retreat.

We stayed here for two nights and could not recommend the B and B enough. We were in the suite with a hot tub which was a great bonus. So relaxing next to the stream. Ian was a great host and very welcoming. Breakfast was lovely and we especially liked that we pre-ordered so that the food was made freshly for the time chosen. Fantastic location. We will definitely be back.

Only stayed one night at Glencree, but will definitely go back on our next visit our room was top-notch, as was the whole place Ian has left nothing to chance everything is high end which made for a lovely stay unfortunately the weather stopped us using the outdoor space which has a great view onto the stream thanks again and well done Shiralee for a great breakfast and for keeping everything spotless 😊👍
