The Location and views of this hotel are breath taking. The hotel is quaint, I did read reviews prior to arriving about some areas requiring investment, this is the case however I could not fault the cleanliness of our room or the hotel, it was spotless and the style is fitting of the property.
We indulged in the tasting menu which is fantastic value and the food was delicious. We did experience slow service when breakfast was busier the second day. Under normal circumstances this may have tainted my review slightly however I have great appreciation that staff were working hard to provide full table service for social distancing, and with the location and the view to enjoy, who needs to rush!?
We would love to return over Christmas, hopefully we can get booked in. Thank you

My daughter and I could not agree about which was the best dish in this eight course tasting menu and apart from the top couple we couldn't rank them as we failed to identify some courses as 'worse' than others. A great occasion served by attentive, smiling staff. A successful New Year's Eve dinner.
The only negative was being told to be there for 7pm with dinner at 7.30 and the meal over by 10pm. So we booked a taxi arrived on time, sat in the main lounge for a glass of champagne,(unlike others who arrived later and were having their pre-dinner drinks in the hallway). However, as we only went through to the dining room at 8pm and no food was served until 8.20, it was clear that our taxi booked with an extra 1/2hr leaway for 10.30 was not going to work. When this was raised with the staff, they were most helpful and, having only come a mile to get there, offerred to drive us home - we accepted.
Thanks and will come again.

This hotel is amazing with beautiful views of the lake and the hills, we stayed for 5 nights last week, mid September. The hotel was situated between Ambleside and Windermere on a hill and both villages are within walking distance, its about two and a half miles and takes about an hour. We stayed in the Buttermere suite (Fell View Suite when booking) which has a very large bathroom with walk in shower, spa bath and a separate lounge area. The room has plenty storage with bed side drawers, another large set of drawers and decent sized wardrobe. There is a dedicated parking space outside of the room so you don't have to carry your luggage far however there are steps to get into the room. Out of the back of the room there is also a semi private patio area with table and chairs. The room was very clean and bins were emptied and the room was cleaned everyday while we were out. When we arrived we were greeted by a young lady (sorry I didn't get her name) who quickly checked us in and then took us to our room to make sure we were happy, Not been to a hotel that has done this before so was very impressed. Breakfast every morning was really nice with continental and cooked breakfast options. All breakfasts were freshly cooked to order. We mostly had an English breakfast every morning with the exception of one morning when my partner had boiled egg on toast which was perfectly cooked to be able to dip in your toast. We also had a meal in the restaurant from the bar menu, I had Steak and my partner had the burger. Both were very nice and the homemade chips were amazing, some of the best I've had. We were looked after by Chris on the night and he was very friendly and helpful, even recommending which beers were the best on the list. The meal was slightly expensive however well worth it. The only issue we had was on the Monday when the restaurant we booked into had to cancel so we went to reception to see if there was a table available for the bar menu, the girl we spoke to (Italian) wasn't as friendly as the other members of staff, she seemed flustered and like we were disturbing her. Initially she said she would speak with the chef and call me. She did call back and offered us a table for the tasting menu and I initially accepted but then realised we didn't like the options so went back to reception to see if we could have a bar meal to which she simply replied no! No explanation or reasons, just no. She was quite abrupt when I questioned this and said they couldn't do it for us so we had to go out to a supermarket to get sandwiches as most restaurants were full at such short notice. We did find out the next morning that we could of had a meal and the staff member couldn't understand why we were refused and was apologetic. Other than this we really enjoyed our stay and it hasn't put us off returning. Finally I would like to say a massive thank you to Matt who looked after us most of the week at breakfast, sorting out our WIFI when we couldn't connect and checking us out. He was fantastic all week was very friendly and made us feel very welcome.

First the good, Welcome five , views five, however accommodation starting to look tired but not un pleasant, lack of basic maintenance to wall paper etc, staff very young but no complaints on effort, few short comings. Soon resolved.

Gardens looking over grown not all lawns now being cut and not helped by Gardner throwing weeds over a fence line. sad looks un cared for.
Service charge is added at the end of the Bill based on what you paid spent, we hope the staff receive the payment.

£12 rated wine, costing £50 a bottle at dinner, there is a feeling the hotel is trying to claw every penny out of guests. Dinner very limited choice, pleasant enough, but missing warm bread and that little bit of a spark, over salted, only just warm. Scallops umm one, cut with a razer blade. Lamb four ways, tiny, minute, minuscule, microscopic, but tasty ( cut backs), you can go to bed hungry very easily .
Little concerned on Covid, take your own spray for room handles and pillows etc can never be sure anymore. Dinning area, little to close to others, difficult one.
All in All a pleasant stay.

We arrived for a first visit to the Lake District and were pleasantly surprised by the location of this stunning property. Upon entering reception it appeared that there were no issues with a global pandemic here, the only Covid measure necessary being a single bottle of sanitiser on reception, we didn't see a single other measure for the whole of our stay apart from the lack of any housekeeping.

We were advised by Tom they had been trying to get hold of us all day. Slightly alarming as we had just had a long journey north from Sussex but no contact whatsoever from the hotel. It transpired that the lodge room that we had reserved had no hot water so they were putting us up in Room 9 overnight. Initially a wow, lovely bay window, view of the fell and pleasant decor. However overnight we realised not so great. The room is directly over the staff entrance/exit door which is in use throughout. We were pleased to be moving the next day to our 'lodge' room, for lodge, read annex for that is broadly what it is, a modern block extension built adjacent to the hotel, not so welcoming in winter perhaps! The decor was very tired and poorly maintained with inadequate noise insulation.

Having promised us that, provided we packed our cases and left them in Room 9, they would be transferred for us, we arrived back after a long day out to find that they were indeed still in the old room. A call to reception got no response and we had to make the effort to return to the hotel to chase this down when all we wanted to do was have a shower and relax.

Dinner was not appealing, we waited over 10 minutes after being seated before receiving a menu or the bottle of house water from their local spring. Our overriding memory was hearing 'so sorry' or 'apologies' all evening as other tables chased up lost orders. We ensured that this dinner was only one in the restaurant. The following evening we had a pleasant burger in the bar, the other nights we ate out.

It was galling to be charged an additional £10 each for a cooked breakfast when paying £300+ per night b&b but to receive a plain egg omelette when a veggie omelette was requested was taking the mickey.

We shall not be returning.

Holbeck Ghyll is currently up for sale. The sooner it is sold, the sooner a major rebuilding process can begin and this place be returned to its former glory, and beyond.
The love behind the scenes just isn’t there anymore.
Reflecting on our 2 night stay, overall it felt like Holbeck was/is in the midst of a ticking-over mode, and has been for some time. There was a reluctance to even maintain painted surfaces in our bathroom, or to update the 2005-looking DVD player. The kettle in our room was like a travel kettle. The cable only just reached the plug socket located on the skirting board.
I didn’t hold much hope for any of the others being USB.
Holbeck boasts a spa, however, this is very small and limited in terms of what is available. You have to walk through the main lounge or around the outside of the main building to get there. Here you are talking 1 shower, steam and sauna rooms for max 4 people, and two treatment rooms for massages etc. No pool. There is supposed to be a jacuzzi but we didn’t see any sign of one.
This time we were not eating at Holbeck. When I have eaten here in the past, I’ve always spoken very highly about their tasting menu. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to experience their MS, as this was lost in 2014. What food we did eat was at breakfast. This was ok. But ok shouldn’t be good enough for this place.
I got the feeling like the staff weren’t working together. Like each of them were on a different journey. Some would greet you and be overtly helpful, whilst others avoided eye contact or ignored you altogether.
Would I recommend this place to you, or suggest somewhere else? All in all it depends. I can think of reasons for and against Holbeck, but one thing is for sure and that is that I won’t be returning to Holbeck any time soon.
All of us will have to wait and see how this plays out.

We have stayed here before and dined when it was a first class experience. -not now.
The hotel is tired, badly needs basic maintenance and was not worth the rate they were asking. The staff were willing and helpful but very inexperienced. For example on two mornings I was served a pot of yoghurt with no spoon, and we had to ask for everything. They have long dispensed with the nice white tablecloths, and the Sommalier who appeared on our last evening totally ignored us. On two nights there was only a basic bar menu and the main menu was very limited.
The room in the Lodge area had a superb view which we felt was safer that in the main hotel as the COVID precautions were minimal.there was sanitizer on the welcome desk but no effort to enforce cleanliness or social distancing.
The furnishings are tired and the towels were threadbare. Given that towels are not expensive this is unforgivable.
Our room was not serviced and when we asked for bins to be emptied and left them outside the room with the used hospitality tray all the mess was still there when we returned to the hotel in the evening.
On two occasions breakfast was advertised at 8 am but the hotel door was still locked.
Whoever owns this hotel needs to invest to make it the decent place it once was as it certainly is poor now. We were very disappointed.

We had the most amazing family break over the Christmas period. As a multi generational family of 7 we were looked after to an incredibly high standard. The staff were friendly, always available and worked incredibly hard to make every single guest’s stay specials. They looked after our hard of hearing 94 year old father in a very caring way which made him feel part of everything yet always looked after. The atmosphere through the week was very special, the food great and the log fires, stunning views and gorgeous rooms were just the icing on the cake . Add to this a crisp mountain walk on your doorstep and you just can’t go wrong . We will be back.

Went on a Travelzoo offer with my wife as a special treat. Very friendly and informative receptionist welcomed us and showed us around.
Very large room with 3 seater sofa. Comfortable beds with quality linen. Great views of Windermere from window.
Evening meal was spectacular although dining room a little cold despite additional fan heater. Main course choices included fillet steak, venison and halibut - excellent for a special deal. There were even mini courses between courses. Drinks quite expensive eg beer over £6 pint and wine upwards of £8 a small glass.
Everything was so delicious though I would gladly eat there any time.
Good choice at breakfast with additional prepared items such as smoked salmon, avocado, and of course a full English.
Bit disappointed on check out to find the complementary prosecco's, an additional beer and a glass of Sauvignon Blanc had been added to the bill. These were swiftly removed by the helpful receptionist. Most staff were very friendly although it was not good to hear a senior member of staff telling off a junior member of staff. We were having a drink in the bar and could clearly hear raised voices - not very professional.

We stayed for 1 night in the lake view suite which has a hot tub and its own private parking space. The room was lovely and the view spectacular, and it was very quiet giving us a great nights sleep. All the staff were super helpful and friendly (although some were very new). We also had afternoon tea on the first day which was delicious and massages in the spa which were nice. I wasn't sure what to rate this, as there were definitely areas for improvement. The room was noticeably tired; the toilet seat wouldn't stay up, the shower had terrible water pressure and there were scratches on some furniture. The other issue was the "casual" restaurant was way too expensive but you'd have to drive to eat elsewhere and we had no other choice as the fine dining option doesn't run on certain days - my partner was a bit disappointed with his meal and his breakfast the next day. Since we stayed on a midweek rate we had the room very discounted which made it great value for money and we did have a lovely relaxing time and the staff were wonderful hence the 5 stars, but I think if we'd paid more we would have been disappointed.
