We stayed in room 18 for 2 nights. Lovely decorated room, and spotlessly clean. As the pale beige carpet was new we were terrified of leaving dirty footprints. A shoe rack, coat and umbrella stand would benefit this beautiful room to try and preserve the carpeting!

My only real issue with the room was that I couldn’t find a plug socket for the hairdryer near enough to a mirror.

All areas of the hotel are simply gorgeous.
The Valentines Dinner was every bit as special as we had dared to hope for and a reasonable price too.

Breakfast was plentiful and superb quality, we certainly didn’t need lunch.

We would love to return again and will be recommending the hotel and restaurant to all of our friends.

We have just returned from a lovely 5 night anniversary break at the Applegarth which was a late amendment to the trip we originally planned abroad.
The hotel only had one suite available when booking (the Harrop) and as the garden appeared overlooked from the photos, we opted for room 7, which was quite an average size room, but made up for it with a huge bathroom that included a double jacuzzi bath with a complementary bottle of Prosecco.
The hotel also has a very decent sized car park at the rear and there was never a problem finding a space.
It was strongly evident that CV19 guidance and advice from the government was being adhered to and we always felt safe when indoors at the hotel.
Breakfast each morning was always very nice and the meal we had the night of our anniversary was beautiful, however the hotel put zero effort into the fact it was a milestone anniversary, I wasnt expecting balloons and bunting, but nothing..........!!!
My main problem with the hotel was the temperature of the room and the landing outside. Weather wise, it was under 20 degrees each day but the room didn't have AC, so we left the windows open all day. That didn't prevent the room from becoming very hot overnight when the window was closed and to leave it open meant you were woken up by any passing traffic.
The hotel is classed as 5 star, but I did struggle a little with that given the glasses in the room were plastic, cheap toiletries in the bathroom and the complementary bottle of water left in the room was filled from a tap water. In my job and during holidays, I stay in a lot of good hotels each year, so I do have a decent benchmark to compare against.
The manager/owner is a nice guy, really hard working, puts some long hours in and nothing appears to be too much trouble for him.
In contrast on the morning of checkout, he wasn't on reception but some miserable guy was, who didn't even ask if we had enjoyed our stay as we returned our key. We were gobsmacked and found it very rude but as they say in life, its the little things.........and manners do go a long way.
We did proceed to meet the manager/owner who had looked after us all week in the car park, he thanked us for our stay and wished us a safe trip home, which meant we didn't leave on a sour-note.

We've just returned from our stay in the Devoke Suite at Applegarth Villa and I can honestly say it was first class from start to finish.

We were greeted with a warm welcome and given all of the necessary information in regards to the measures that are currently in place due to Covid 19 and were made to feel reassured that everything had been done in regards to keeping ourselves and others safe. On checking in, we were provided with menus for the evening meal and for breakfast (we didn't use the restaurant for the evening meal, although the options sounded amazing).

The suite, well what can I say, it was outstanding, from the giant bed to the mood lighting options in every room, the bathroom which is huge with twinkly lights in the ceiling above the bath and the television IN THE BATHROOM, the walk in shower and the twin sinks. In addition to the mood lighting options in the panel on the wall beside thebed, you have buttons to open and close the curtain which glides open to reveal the spacious terrace with a beautiful view of the mountains and the hot tub (which is not only cleaned every day but is actually emptied and re-filled every day - not like some places where they just dump more chemicals in to clean it).

You pre-select your breakfast which you hand over when you go for breakfast, we opted for coffees, toast and the eggs benedict. The table is covered when you enter but the table cloth is expertly whipped away to reveal a beautifully laid table with jams and honey to choose from. The food is honestly to die for, the eggs benedict with the perfectly poached eggs and the light hollandaise sauce was the nicest breakfast I think we've had.

I truly can't recommend the Applegarth Villa enough, it was five star from beginning to end and I can't wait to return the next time we visit the lakes.

Pros: Good location in the city centre
Room service is quick when it is running.
Bar looks nice
Rooms look nice
Very helpful in accepting my dry cleaning from an external company and placing it safely in our room for us.
Good breakfast

Cons:
Room 19: we had to have our blinds down throughout our stay because our room faced the passway to the car park and people frequently stopped in this space. Impacted on our privacy as we could hear people talking and assembling their bikes. Passerbys were able to look into our room.

We weren't able to get ice to our room if at 11.30pm. We were told it's not a 24 hour hotel.

One man does most of the work e.g. seating everyone for dinner, delivering room service, checking guests in etc. Not a problem but he is quite rushed so the service felt a little impersonal at times and it felt that he was inconvenienced if we asked him a question.

The dinner looked/tasted like oven food.

The spa bath wasn't working the first night (we tried turning a dial and push the one button which was out-the other button was pushed all the way in). This was fixed for us the next day. (Aparently all we needed to do was turn the dial which we did).

Room does not have a minibar or fridge.

Although the bar looks impressive, it had no atmosphere. Other restaurants, and hotel bars nearby had soft background music which makes such a difference.

Very expensive room, feels like prices are inflated way above excellent hotels in London which offer a lot more. (See my review for Abbey House hotel in Barrow in Furness).

We’ve just been to stay at Applegarth Villa hotel for two nights, what an excellent stay we had, we have stayed at plenty of hotels over the years (and I still do due to work) and Applegarth Villas has to be the one of best we have stayed at, its on our doorstep, and not in London!

The minute you walk in you do think it cannot be this perfect throughout, but how mistaken you are as it is perfect and impeccable, with attention to detail. . . . . Everywhere.

You walk into a room that is spotless, clean, and absolutely amazing, plush carpets, quality bedding, towels and furnishings, immaculate bathrooms with not a spot of black anywhere on the white silicone around the bath, sink or grout in the tiles. Dust free light shades and fittings, no residual fingerprints on anything . . . 10 out of 10 for being perfect.

The nice touch is the little box of chocolates in the room and a great selection of tea, coffee, biscuits and the nice bottle of simple plain water, just sitting there waiting for you, its not hard to just make things like this right for your guests. The blackout curtains where excellent and actually did block plenty of light out, given it was July and long light nights, this was spot on.

You will find all you need in the room, hairdryer, iron, safe, so there is no need to bring much apart from yourself and your clothes.

Then its down to the bar for a drink, what a place this is, well furnished and perfectly laid out, its just like a gentleman’s club must have been, you know you are somewhere nice when you sit down and await your drink and relax. Great selection of wines by the glass to choose from, spoilt for choice, the same for some lovely single malts too. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff while you ponder what to have as you will find it hard to decide what to have to drink.

Amazing views over Windermere when you sit in what is the restaurant area of a morning or evening and just take in the scenery that is the wonderful lake district. We had afternoon tea on the terrace and just relaxed there taking in the lovely gardens and scenic view of the mountains in the distance, you really could be anywhere as its so quiet and tranquil and not like you are so close to the town itself.

If you want a getaway place that is really how all hotels should be and aspire to be like, then come to Applegarth Villas, its adult only, great food, great location, great bar, friendly welcoming staff and no children running around shouting or crying and ruining the atmosphere.

All the staff here are so helpful, chatty and nothing is too much trouble for anyone, as everyone has time to chat with you, you cannot single out one person in particular as being outstanding as everyone really is so nice and genuine.

A 2 minute walk and you are in the centre of Windermere itself, it's a 20-minute walk downhill to the lake and Bowness from Applegarth, and uphill back, which is not bad on a nice day, Ambleside, Grasmere and Coniston are all around 30 minutes' drive away. All of this makes the hotel a great place to base yourself and then explore the surrounding area.

We have just returned from our second visit to this villa hotel , and it was just as fantastic as it was last time .
We stayed in the Potter Suite , which is dog friendly and features it’s own private entrance and garden .
The rooms are immaculate, with this suite having an entrance area featuring a fridge & coffee maker , living area with couch & TV , luxurious bathroom with walk in shower and free standing tub ( and TV ! ) and a beautiful bedroom with yet another TV . The living area looks out through large patio doors onto the garden with hot tub and patio furniture. The suite is perfectly private and relaxing .
The owners of this property were so friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble - you only had to ask . They were very good with all the Covid protocols and made every effort to make us feel welcome and safe .
The restaurant itself doesn’t allow dog’s but this was not a problem as our breakfast was delivered to our suite every morning and we enjoyed eating in the sunshine on our patio .
The breakfast menu itself had a large selection , and the food was delicious, being made of local produce .
In the evening , we could order drinks from the bar to be brought to the suite - a great service while relaxing after a long day walking .
I particularly loved the hot tub which was easy to use and a lovely way to relax after a busy day. The private tubs are emptied and refilled after each guest.
The hotel is ideally located in the centre of Windermere itself , with shops, restaurants etc all around . It’s setting is quiet and sitting in the garden or hot tub was very quiet & relaxing . A nice half hour walk , takes you to Bowness and the Lake itself , which was bustling and busy .
I wish we could have stayed longer and can’t wait to return .

Having seen the amazing reviews I was excited to be staying here. Unfortunately it only delivered disappointment.

The room was very hot with no air conditioning. It did have a fire door that lead onto a fire escape but for safety reasons couldn’t be left open all night.

There was no sound proofing at all and could hear people in the surrounding rooms, watching tv, drying their hair etc but more annoying was the door slamming when anyone on your floor left their room.

Another word of warning if you arrive before check in time then the welcome is rude and hostile and anything but kind. No where to store your luggage and no use of the bathroom, despite the fact you may have travelled miles to get there.

This isn’t close to 5 star. There are much nicer places to stay on the lake, where your business will be appreciated not just an inconvenience.

First visited this beautiful hotel 15 years ago on our 25th Wedding Anniversary. The owners Alan and Suzanne gave us a lovely welcoming with Champagne and chocolates in our room. We have stayed on a number of occasions since and have seen the Applegarth develop into an outstanding 5 star hotel. The decor is beautiful and the rooms are all individually styled with stunning views from the lovely conservatory dining area of the fells. We have just returned from a 3 night break for our 40th Anniversary where Alan ,Suzanne and family again greeted us very warmly. They explained fully the Covid changes and how we moved about the hotel safely. These changes were seemless and easy to follow, ensuring we felt very safe and in no way did this impose on our stay. We enjoyed delicious breakfasts and evening meals served very efficiently by all the staff and cannot thank them enough for their complete professionalism during these very difficult times. We are looking forward to our next visit.

Just returned from another amazing break at Applegarth Villa. Due to Covid there are some new procedures in place, but this doesn’t detract from the warm and welcoming atmosphere. The hotel itself is absolutely spotlessly clean and beautifully decorated. The suites are absolutely stunning, each one is individually designed, spacious and extremely comfortable. The hot tubs on the balcony and the baths big enough for two are just the icing on the cake.
We ate in the restaurant, and as someone who is vegetarian and also gluten intolerant, it is great to have everything clearly marked on the menu. Dinner was really tasty, especially the stuffed aubergine. But make sure you leave space for dessert...the gluten free sticky toffee pudding is amazing!
The thing that really sets the Applegarth apart is the staff. Even with the hotel being busy, everyone was friendly and accommodating. Nothing is too much trouble and you feel like a valued guest, which these days can be a rarity.
Thanks to Kevin and Michelle for yet another wonderful stay, we will be back soon!

We returned to the AppleGarth for a much needed romantic break, we booked room 2 and were pleasantly surprised it had been recently refurbished, to a very high standard. From the wallpaper to the furnishings the rooms were beautifully done, every attention to detail. We dined in the restaurant for each of the nights, as always the breakfast and evening meal were excellent, all the food locally sourced, always hot and very well presented. The management had gone to great lengths to make sure that the Covid restrictions were followed, and we felt safe and this did not spoil our wonderful stay, we will be going back very soon.
