It was always going to be a concern going into a hotel at this worrying time but we had nothing to worry about.

Everything that could be done had been, we felt safe in the surroundings of the hotel.
Hand gel stations throughout, staff adhering to social distancing plus wearing face masks when serving food. One way system set up around the hotel.

Room clean and everything we needed in it. It was fine that the room was not serviced daily, but if you needed anything you just asked.

The food was excellent, eating in the grill looking across the lake, tables set out with ample room to move around.

Beautiful scones on the cream tea and afternoon tea with a stunning selection of pastries.

All staff friendly and accommodating. Really cannot fault our stay - even our little dog was impressed with his bowl of treats!

We booked this hotel for our "just for us" wedding. Helen, who was our wedding co-ordinator was so helpful and friendly and couldn't do enough for us!
Our original wedding date was the 24th March, little did we know that it would be cancelled with just 12 hours to go the night before, whilst we were enjoying our stay at the hotel! National lockdown! The staff were as sad as us!

So, wedding day, take 2! 14th July. The hotel fitted a two day stay in for us with a wedding ceremony as soon as was allowed by the government. Lots of covid saftey features in place, spaced our dining tables, one way system in the reception and through the corridor to the dining areas, with hand sanitisers around the hotel. I felt very safe, even though we were so nervous about venturing our after 3 months of being at home!
We stayed in the same room, room 2, which has a massive comfortable bed, a sofa overlooking the most stunning view of the gardens and the lake. Sparkling clean bathroom with a jaccuzi bath. As part of our package we had a welcome hamper with chocolates, gingerbread, and bubbly on ice!

We had our first nights meal at the grill, which was superb, everything was just cooked so well, and the waitress was so friendly too. We had built up a lovely rapport with her from our first visit, and she recognised us as soon as we arrived back. On our wedding day we had breakfast in bed bought to us, everything was just perfect!
Our ceremony was held in the drawing room, with our two guests, our two registrars and Rob the manager. It was all socially distanced, but felt so special :)
We had afternoon tea in the garden, the young waiter was very helpful even after I requested more drinks making him walk quite a way each time, nothing was too much trouble at all. The afternoon tea was stunning, in looks and taste!
As if that wasn't enough food, we had the taster meal in the Aboreal dining room with our 2 guests in the evening. We were quite difficult as not only did we choose the vegetarian menu, two of our guests had allergeis, but everything was catered for and was just superb. We can understand why you have your two rosettes! Mikey, our server for the evening was just the best! He was excited with every course he bought us, maybe because he knows how good it tastes!!
The menu is usually £55 if just having the meal, but the wine flight was a great addition which we recommend.
I know I keep saying how perfect this place is, but it just was, if you are wondering if you should have your "just for us" wedding here, then yes you should! We could not have been any happier with everything.
Thank you to everyone at the hotel, Rob, Helen, Lucy the wizards in the kitchen, everyone who made our day pefect! We will most certainly be back, hopefully for a longer stay next time.

My wife and I were celebrating our 10th Wedding Anniversary on New Year’s Eve and we wanted to go away. After trawling the internet I came across the Merewood. Man what a good choice. I booked the NY package but also a couple of days after for a bit of relaxation. I cannot express how fabulous every member of the staff was, and how fantastic the food was. The organisation was first rate, and the whole experience was spectacular from start to finish.

We were booked into room 7, which is a very spacious room with a beautiful view of the lake. Every day it was cleaned spotless, it felt like we were entering for the first time.

Where to start with the food? Talking to one of the other guests, she remarked that the chef was an expert at making the meals feel light, and one has to agree. Every morsel was delicious, and whilst filling, you never felt that the food lay heavy. We ate from the grill on the nights that we were off the package, and the food was exceptional. Even the chips were light.

All in all, I have to say that the Merewood is one of the best places I have ever stayed in, and I would not hesitate in going back. Exceptional.

This hotel has lovely far reaching views of Windermere and the fells beyond from the rooms at the front of the hotel, but the rooms were a bit disappointing, the cheap pine furniture has seen better days and is not in keeping with the lovely old building and it’s original features.
The bathroom was clean and basic, unfortunately with an electric shower, and a mirror that needed replacing room 4.
While rooms are currently not serviced due to COVID 19 I requested clean towels each day and they were left outside the room, which wasn’t a problem.
The furniture and curtains in the public areas were in need of an upgrade, and the Chesterfield sofas in the bar need putting in the skip along with the furniture in our-room.
The porch area before you enter the building needs cleaning, first impressions matter.
The food was very good, from the Afternoon Teas, Evening Meals and Breakfast, so thank you to the hard working chef and his team.
The staff were all friendly and polite.
If you stay at Merewood and your mobility is not good, you may want to ask about parking you car, as the car park is up a steep drive, or access up steep steps, they do have a few spaces at the front door.

A beautiful old Manor House with stunning views across to Lake Windermere. The staff were polite, attentive and helpful, particularly those in the restaurant and on reception. The hotel felt very safe with many social distancing measures in place including one way systems and staff access to bedrooms. I requested extra toiletries via a note to reception and came back to find a gift bag with lots of extra goodies left outside the bedroom door. We ate in the Grill restaurant which was lovely and great value for money. I thoroughly recommend a gin on the terrace. The only negative is that the room decor may need updating soon but although a little dated everything was spotlessly clean. We would definitely visit again.

Dear a w, Thank you for a great review relating to your recent stay at Merewood. We always strive to ensure all our guests have an enjoyable experience and i am glad on this occasion we did just that. The team do a wonderful job and i am sure they too will be very pleased to read your comments. We are lucky to have the cosy lounges and amazing gardens that match perfectly with the building. Dating back to 1812, the hotel has retained much of its historical charm with many of the original features lovingly restored, including the panelled hall and reception. We very much look forward to welcoming you back some time soon. Many Kind Regards. Ramon Assitant Manager

The Hotel itself looks very nice in an elevated position, it's quite grand. We checked in and also pleased with our room, so all good so far. The stay was a wedding gift for us which included a cream tea so we went down to the lounge to enjoy this before we went out for a walk. There were two prominent tables by large windows with spectacular views, one table was taken so we sat in the other. Time to relax and enjoy the time...... Not so, we were told by staff that we could not sit at this table as it was for people who had afternoon tea, not cream tea! We reluctantly moved and we were made to feel very much second class guests. No one else came to that table, we were there about 20 minutes, there would have been no harm leaving us where we were. It might sound petty but we did feel badly treated, as a result we did not eat in the hotel for evening meal or breakfast. During the night the room was very cold, so much so my wife hardly slept.

Nothing prepared us for how beautiful the Hotel was, the staff were exceptional especially Ramon and Mike, we had afternoon tea and a truly amazing evening meal, bespoke and tasty fine dining at its best.

I have not had a hotel experience like it, the rooms were warm and cosy they hotel also has an environmental awareness rarely seen.

Weather was typically unpleasant hit the hotel is very comfy and warm and are happy for you to mill about.

We will be back as soon as we can afford another stay.

The hotel building and grounds are beautiful, although the 'lake view' is somewhat in the distance. Lounges and dining rooms are in keeping with the country house feel and very comfortable. However, our bedroom was a big disappointment. In saying that, we had a comfortable bed and the en suite bathroom was clean and modern, though would benefit from an extra shelf to store toiletries. The room itself was very small, to the rear of the building, with no view and above the kitchen with smells and noise morning and evening; the furniture was old, worn and left little room for movement in the room. This accommodation was certainly not worth over £160 per night.

I don't actually know where to start with this review. We chose merewood hotel for our wedding due to the outstanding amount of excellent reviews. We had actually never been to the merewood hotel let alone the lake district. Helen who is the wedding coordinator has been extremely supportive, quick in replying to emails, communication has been very clear with zero problems, nothing we have asked for has been to much trouble for Helen or the Merewood Hotel staff. We opted for the 'just us' package with an additional 17 guests of which 5 were children, all the guests that attended commented on how friendly, lovely the staff are, how stunningly beautiful the hotel and grounds are and what a lovely chilled day the wedding was. All of us adults have attended traditional large weddings and we all said how intimate and lovely our wedding was, we didn't have any decorations and we didn't notice due to the stunning rooms and decor downstairs. We barely saw any other guests, it's very quiet, peaceful and serene. All the rooms are unique and beautifully presented and the bridal room (room 2) had the most amazing views it was picture perfect. Oh and the food!!!! Oh my days THE FOOD, portion sizes are more than enough, the food you can tell is freshly made, it was absolutely delicious and clean plates all round of the wedding party massive compliments to the chef!

Honestly, I can not recommend this hotel enough the value for money, quality of service, quality of food, the rooms, prices of drinks just everything was outstanding!

Love from The Brusbys

This is a lovely hotel. We were given a free upgrade to room 11 which had massive windows overlooking the lake. Decor as to be expected, with period furniture. The carpet could do with a good clean and it was obvious that the posts on the beds had not been moved for a very long time due to the state of the carpet. We took our dog with us and he was welcomed along with us. The first night we opted to eat in the grill and we had booked the £55 tasting menu in the Arboreal restaurant the following evening. The grill food was dreadful. Batter on haddock soggy. My husband ordered a burger which was inedible, hard and tasteless - he asked for it to be wrapped up to take away for our dog. Both meals were served in a dated manner on greaseproof 'newspaper' and were £16.95 each - poor pub food at gastro pub prices! The restaurant is more like a canteen - far too bright with a cold feel. The quality of this food lead to us cancelling our dinner in the Arboreal the following evening to celebrate my husband's 60h birthday as we were very worried at spending a lot of money only to be disappointed if THe previous evening's dinner was anything to go by.
Considering that our room was not cleaned while we were there due to covid there weren't any hand sanitisers available, I only saw one on reception and another was empty. I asked at breakfast if they had any and the waiter said that he would try to find some. I think that this imperative seeing as the breakfast is a buffet serve yourself, although the breakfast was the best thing about our stay coupled with the staff.
I believe that this hotel does not care about its food as they believe they have carte blanche seeing as it is not within walking distance of anywhere.
They need to pull their socks up so that everything that they offer is up to the same standard as their staff! Matt on reception was brilliant and soooo helpful.

Thank you for choosing the Merewood. I am pleased there were plenty of aspects of your stay that you enjoyed and specifically comment on our team, who will be most grateful of your comments. Regarding your opinion of the food, I am sorry that this was not something that you enjoyed in the Grill. I must strongly point out that this is not feedback we often receive at all. We retain all of the hotels comment cards so that we can learn trends and see if there are ways that we can improve. Clearly the Grill experience wasn't for you and it is a shame in that case that you didn't dine in our 2 AA rosetted Arboreal. Here at the Merewood we are most pleased to be able to offer fine dining in the form of the taster menu or the Grill for more familiar dining. Sadly on this occasion, although it is your experience, your comments are quite hurtful and very subjective. Although covid is starting to drift off in to the background, we still take it very seriously. We continue to wear masks and there are multipole hand sanitiser stations, screens, mirrors in the corridors to save awkward close encounters when going around a corner and distance between settings. If a sanitiser becomes empty because it's been used, we will of course replenish it. Once again, I am sorry that there were frustrations during your stay and again, I am sorry for the way you may her chosen to describe our country house.
