We booked one of the "Signature" rooms, which was very comfortable and provided a good view over the lake and fells. We selected the hotel location to be away from the busy centre. On arrival at a friendly reception we were advised of a problem with local water supplies that were currently being dealt with by the Utility Company. We were given the option of cancelling or persevering. We decided to do the latter and fortunately the issue was resolved later in the evening. The food and service was very good and the special dietary requirements for one of our party were handled very well. Covid-19 protection was clearly in evidence with all the staff wearing masks and many sanitisation points. Overall a very pleasing stay.

I have travelled the World on business for many years pre COVID and have stayed at many hotels. The Hillthwaite has got to be one the best privately owned hotels that I have had the pleasure to stay at whilst visiting the Lake District with my wife. The staff are exceedingly helpful in catering for all types of food allergies. The hotel is very well maintained, has beautiful views over the lake and is well positioned for all the attractions.

My wife, son and I have just returned from our first visit to the Hillthwaite, having enjoyed a lovely four night stay in an Occasion room.
Our room had great views towards the lake and mountains beyond. It was spacious, meticulously clean with a large, contemporary, stylish bathroom.
Complementary wine in the refrigerator was a very nice welcoming touch.
The various lounges, bar and dining room throughout the hotel were all decorated and comfortably furnished to a high standard.
We stayed DB&B and the food was always served promptly, piping hot and well cooked/presented by very friendly, experienced staff who knew what they were doing and were eager to make our stay a success.
Meal times and use of the pool /steam room were all by prior arrangement, helping control and limit the numbers of guests together at any one time - important to many in these Covid times.
Likewise, mask wearing when moving around the hotel is encouraged and hand sanitisers are located throughout.
For us however, the success of our stay was mostly down to the staff who made us so welcome right from our telephone booking through to our reluctant departure ... they work so well as a happy and professional team of caring people - well done to them all!

Dear 'Mike H' Thank you for such a glowing review, we really appreciate you doing so. It has been a challenging period for us and the team here have been absolutely outstanding, we all get on and support one another and it is so nice to hear that this shows to our guests. I always say we have such lovely guests and have so many who return year after year, some nearly every other month! Glad you had a wonderful stay with us and look forward to welcoming you back. I stayed in a single room (26). It is on the ground floor and overlooks a small garden area bordered by the car park. When I was unpacking I discovered that one of the drawers contained an empty whiskey bottle, a half eaten packet of biscuits, a half eaten packet of sweets and a used plastic fork! This left me feeling extremely unsure and nervous that the room had been thoroughly covid cleaned.
I arrived during the heatwave and when I had unpacked I went straight into the shower, as I moved into the bedroom from the shower I was greeted by the sight of a female member of staff directly outside my window and a male member of staff standing in the garden facing into my room, they were sorting out laundry! I later discovered that there was a walkway directly outside my window which was often used by staff to gain access to the hotel.
There was only one plug in the room which was nowhere near the mirror or the bed and I had to stand beside the TV in order to dry my hair, which fortunately is short.
When I complained to the Management that I felt that my privacy was being invaded and that I felt unable to leave the windows open overnight I was advised to keep the curtains closed!! and was reassured that this particular Manager always kept his eyes to the ground when he passed the window and should my privacy be invaded the staff were on hand to assist me - although it was not explained how this assistance would manifest itself.
I acknowledge that the industry has to do all it can to recoup its losses but I believe that Room 26 is a step too far and that it should revert back to the staff sleeping room, which it undoubtedly was as the Manager kept telling me that he had slept in that room many times.

Dear 'Maggie W' In the first instance please accept our apologies for the disappointment received. We do make mistakes and I'm sorry that the room was not fully checked and this oversight has been addressed. The area directly alongside some of the rooms is primarily a fire escape and not a thoroughfare, used occasionally not very often as you mentioned. Inside the room we provide a blind that allows light through but also provides privacy. It is true the hotel has deliveries, all of these take place after 9am and before 4pm, due to the nature of our Hotel it is unavoidable that guests will not see these. The room was and never has been a staff room, both myself and Julian the manager you spoke to, stay occasionally in all of the rooms throughout the year to identify any potential problems. We all work so hard, more so than ever before and to receive such a negative review is so disappointing but do feel that Room 26 as a single guest room provides exactly what we describe including a socket by the bedside table near the window. I'm sorry that you won't be returning but should you wish to please contact me or one of our helpful receptionists. Kind regards Matt & the Hillthwaite Team

Pre arrival the hotel bombarded us with messages to pre book breakfasts, dinners, afternoon teas, swimming times etc.

Location: Convenient for windermere and bowness but it is still a 20 minute walk uphill one way for each.

Parking: Lots of parking although quite busy and tightly laid out. Lots of the parking is on slopes so make sure your handbrake is in good nick.

Hotel: Clean, lots of seating in lounges, bars and terrace although the bar is very pricey for the area. Lovely views out over the hills and down to lake Windermere. Public toilet has a timer on the lights which is quite short and no motion sensor in the cubicle. Heating is run fairly warm throughout and it took most of the first night to cool the room down with radiators off, windows open and a fan running.

Breakfast: Reasonable selection and very accommodating of changes. Quick service and a good system for getting people in and out. Not the highest quality meats in the full English but not unpleasant.

Room: Iron, ironing board, fan, hair dryer, TV and Tea and Coffee facilities provided. Gaps under room doors allow hallway lighting into room. Over starched bedding makes for a very rustly night's sleep. Mattress was very bouncy. Walls are paper thin, you can hear conversations, water in pipes, cars being loaded in the car park.

In our room in particular which was on the first floor of the hotel, but due to the slope was at ground level, we were overlooked by one of the car parks with no netting or other privacy treatment on the windows including a floor to ceiling window right by the bed. The curtains, did not reach the edges of the windows (Which faced east) so sunrise on the first day was directly visible from pillows.

There was no toilet brush in the bathroom. Shower toiletries were not replaced during room service. Despite following the instructions for how not to have the bed changed, our items were moved and the bed was changed anyway.

We had a dog, so this severely limited options on room choice which we thought was disappointing.
However the room we had was clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated
Breakfast was a little haphazard and the staff were either new or simply didn’t know what they were doing. There were some delays caused to a ‘problem in the kitchen’ but there was no apology offered and staff were just rushing around not wanting to meet anyone’s eyes which was poor handling of the situation.
When it did arrive, breakfasts were delicious.

Very very disappointed, used this hotel many times, booked 1 night stay end of August with an upgrade room. Checking in all ok for Covid, got room key, got to room, this was not an upgrade room!!!!! As i checked room opened drawers and there to my surprise a drawer full of underwear!!!!! checked the bathroom hairs in bath and on toilet seat!!!!!! this room had obviously not been sanitised as COVID guidelines. Went to reception to complain, a male came to talk to us NO FACESHIELD, he couldn't do anything, he offered to clean the room himself, no way,
it needs to be sanitised. Got a refund and went home not the night my hubby or me were planning. We felt the male who spoke to us just wanted us out of the hotel so other guests did not over hear our complaint. This hotel should not hold GOOD TO GO symbol. I do have a photo ofunderwear in drawer.

Dear ‘Tracey M’ Firstly I would like to apologise for the issues you encountered upon arrival, my team and I have worked incredibly hard since reopening to ensure that the hotel is following current legislation and guidance. The items you found within one of the draws had been left and a full and thorough investigation took place. The marks on the bath are chips in the enamel from where the metal plug gets dropped into the bath and not hairs, had we been given the opportunity we would explained this to you, it is due to be replaced. I have today had the opportunity of checking the CCTV on Reception and I can clearly see Julian the person you referred to as not having a facemask on, had one on. The team has since re-opening wore facemasks, even though this was not a directive at the time. We tried are very best to resolve this matter at the time in a calm manner and empathised with you, despite you raising your voice, you made our team and other guests upset and uncomfortable which was unecessary. We don’t always get everything right and will admit when we don't but would hope to be given an opportunity to turn things around especially given you have used us many times before. If you would like to discuss this matter, I would be more than happy too, please feel free to get in touch with me direct. Kind regards Matt

We booked the Hillthwaite for a couple of nights last week and it was fantastic. We had booked a Classic room as part of the Autumn offer and were very pleasantly surprised to receive a complimentary upgrade to Classic Plus. The location of the hotel is spot on, within easy walking distance of both Bowness and Windermere. It’s elevated position provided amazing views of the lake, the Langdales and Helvelyn range. From the moment we entered the hotel we were impressed. The staff were all very friendly and polite and we felt extremely welcome. The rooms, both public and bedrooms and bathrooms, were immaculately clean and well decorated. We felt so comfortable, calm and relaxed throughout our stay. The food was absolutely superb and there was a good choice of wines at reasonable prices. We thoroughly enjoyed everything about our stay - so much so that we ended up booking an extra night. We would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and will definitely be back. It’s our new favourite hotel in the Lake District,

We stayed for one night as a last minute getaway after my recovery from surgery, we wanted somewhere that was near to restaurants and the lake but not to close for noise or crowded areas as it was the bank holiday weekend and Hillthwaite House was certainly that. The hotel is immaculate, staff are extremely friendly and polite and the rooms were beautiful just like the views from any side of the building.
Lovely quiet lobby areas to sit in and have a drink or chill out in and look at the views, smallish but well stocked bar with a very helpful barman Florian.

Our room (number 19) had lovely views with a lounge area including a sofabed, tv and chairs by the window, a spacious bedroom with kingsize bed, wardrobes and tv and bathroom with overhead shower. Everything if needed was availble in the room including; kettle, cups, glasses, bottled water, tea, coffe, sugar, biscuits, iron, ironing board, hair dryer, towels and much more. The bed was so comfy that I haven't slept good since returning home lol!

Breakfast was included in the package we had booked; there was an endless choice from cereals, fruit, yoghurt, and pastries to a very tasty cooked breakfast. I liked the fact that it wasn't a buffet style breakfast so there was no queuing or waiting for options to be refilled and the service was quite quick after ordering from the kitchen. My other half opted for poached eggs with his breakfast and they were cooked perfectly - not always achievable in restaurants/hotels.

We can't wait to return for another break soon!

Stayed here for two nights . Absolutely beautiful
hotel, spotlessly clean and pristine. Sitting areas
are divine and decorated to an extremely high
standard from wall coverings to sofas and chairs.
Views from sitting rooms are breathtaking. Food
and beverages are all first class and each and
everyone of the staff are extremely hard working
and bend over backwards to meet your needs
Bedroom was spotlessly clean beautiful white
towels and the most comfiest bed I've slept on, so
comfy weve taken the name of the mattress so we
can purchase one for ourselves. Crisp clean white
linen tea and coffee, kettle, hairdryer, ironing
board if needed. I will without a doubt be returning
to this hotel after my experience. Thankyou to all at
the hilthwaite for your phenomenal hospitality. From
