Know before you go
Every traveler has a different Windermere wishlist, whether that's exploring castle ruins, paddling on crystal-blue waters, or simply walking in its woodlands. And it's all possible in this area, considered the heart of the Lakes District. If you're staying in Windermere proper, you'll find restaurants and galleries but also a rambling hillside walk to Orrest Head right out your door. A few minutes' drive down the street, Bowness-on-Windermere is a kind of sister town to Windermere. But it's no secret--this place is overrun with travelers in summer thanks to its closeness to the water and tons of shops and restaurants. On the north end of the lake, Ambleside makes a great jumping off point for hiking, cycling, and climbing adventures. Grasmere, ten minutes north of Ambleside, has a cozy cottage vibe and a slower-pace with its own beloved lake perfect for getting away from it all. If you prefer more of a city feel, 15 minutes east of Windermere is Kendal, a larger town with plenty of chain hotels where you can lay your head.

Peaceful lakes, snow-frosted mountaintops, and way fewer tourists make wintertime in Windermere and the whole Lakes District a stunning place to be. But budget-minded travelers are often drawn by another factor—those lodging prices that drop once cool weather arrives.

When the snow starts falling, head to the Lake District Ski Club near Thirlmere. The runs here are right next to one of England’s highest peaks, Helvellyn, and feature a tow so you won’t have to trudge to the top of the mountain on your own.

Camping isn’t exclusive to summertime. Find a cozy spot by a wood-burning fire in one of the area’s glamping yurts or cabins.

Need a spot to warm your bones? Book a whiskey tour at Lakes Distillery in Cockermouth. Traveling with kids? No problem, they can hang out with the resident alpacas while you sip on single-malt.

In spring, Windermere brushes off the winter chill and puts on a jacket of lush emerald-green leaves and grasses. You’ll have to deal with the occasional rain-soaked day, but the earlier months of the season remain relatively quiet and crowd-free. And happily, hotel prices are still thawing out from their winter lows, too, so there are still deals to be had.

Lake cruises are one of the most popular activities in the area, and spring is a perfect time to bask in a sunbeam on the top deck. Caught in a drizzle? These boats offer covered seating with wide windows, too, so there’s no need to speed back to harbor.

Spring weather is all about getting out into the countryside to spot wildflowers and listen to birdsong. Walk the two-mile trip up to Orrest Head from the Windermere Tourist Information Center for gorgeous views of the southern lakes.

May brings the Keswick Jazz & Blues Festival, the largest jazz festival in the U.K., which features this genre in all its wildly different styles: New Orleans, swing, hot club, plus classic, traditional, and mainstream jazz and blues.

Chances are, if you’re thinking of Windermere, you’re picturing the lake during full-blown summer. And the weather this time of year is the kind that makes people run at top speed off a pier and cannonball into the water—or throw themselves into any of the area’s other outdoor activities. Don’t forget sunscreen, as the reflection off the lake bumps up those UV rays.

You’re on a lake—you’re not going to come all this way and not spend some time on a boat, right? This is the best season to cool off in the water by kayaking, canoeing, or white-water rafting.

Pack your wetsuit—the Great North Swim pushes off in June from Windermere. Swimmers can tackle 250 meters or as far as 10k in fresh open water—or you can cheer them on from the safety of the shore and get inspired for your next lap at the public pool.

Beer lovers, plan your trip around the Keswick Beer Festival the first week of June. You’ll be able to sample 150+ ales, party with live musical acts, and contribute to a good cause—all the proceeds support sport programs for kids.

Summer gets all the love, but fall in Windermere has its own thing going: crisp mountain air, blazing foliage colors, and misty lake mornings. Other major perks include fewer people and cheaper hotel rates. You might want to aim for a visit in November, which sees less rainfall on average than other fall months.

Enter into a wooded storybook wonderland by walking around Tarn Hows, originally owned by Beatrix Potter. The flat, 1.5km-long path is a particularly lovely place to take in the pretty fall landscape.

Think of Grasmere Guzzler—with its 100 local and international ales and ciders—as the U.K.’s answer to Oktoberfest. Live music, a barbecue, kids entertainment, and on-site camping mean everyone is in on the fun, even those who aren’t quite drinking age yet.

Lit lovers gather every November for the Words by the Water festival in Keswick, where writers and readers nerd out with lectures, discussions, workshops, and exhibits.
