I really wanted to love this. I had high hopes for one of the most expensive afternoon teas in Liverpool. Positives: The hotel is beautiful and a dedicated tea room felt very special. The staff were friendly, the children's afternoon tea was great value. Negatives: Table very wobbly! Challenging for having afternoon tea when you have so many plates and cups etc and things clatter and fall over! We had to ask to move table and even then the next table also wobbled. Staff said they were all wobbly and laughed! The server was friendly and pleasant but unfortunately service really wasn't up to the price and the setting. It just wasn't attentive at all. We had to wait 50 minutes for our food, there were no top up drinks or sandwiches offered, had to ask for additional drinks including champagne. We would have paid for additional champagne but the opportunity was never there to order it. The server seemed to be out of the room most of the time. I asked for a plain ham sandwich for my daughter and was told we'd have to wait as the chef was very busy. There was a lovely chocolate heart for valentines day. But the birthday girl is gluten free and I'd made them aware in advance. There was nothing additional served to her (or me as both are gluten free) we were just told you can look at this but you can't eat any! In most places you might get something extra for a special birthday but here she actually got less! We were out celebrating my mum's special birthday and I have to say I was disappointed. I could have had sandwiches and poor service anywhere but we were hopeful of something special here especially given the surroundings and the price. Sadly, it just wasn't up to standard.

Brilliant stay for my birthday with my wife. Arrived early to make use of the amazing spa, had a brilliant massage and then a swim and sauna. We then checked in and were given a free upgrade. Meal and drinks at the palm house were spot on. Will be back

Booked the champagne afternoon tea as a treat for my two sisters to celebrate their birthdays. Upon arrival there was no member of staff present in the Botanical Tea Room and when they did arrive I felt they were not particularly aware of the fact that I had previously booked. There was no table laid for three. Lots of other tables hadn't been cleared,Still full of dirty crockery . I stated when booking that I wanted champagne but was still asked if we wanted to have either champagne or prosecco . Three glasses were brought to us, didn't actually see the champagne bottle .The table we then realised was incredibly unstable and our glasses were moving. Staff member had disappeared again so I went and found napkins to try and steady the table, unfortunately this didn't address the problem. Tried two other tables and they wobbled as well. Went to reception to ask if something could be done to help, the receptionist asked if we would like to be moved to the Palm Court to eat I gratefully accepted. Sadly she never came back to us. When I returned to our table the food had been served but no tea or coffee offered. They are supposed to have a Tea Sommelier according to the hotels website, don't think so! Eventually a manager appeared who I think was the Bar Manager (I apologise for not asking his name as he was such a lovely man and so professional , a true asset to the Municipal) he then looked after us and turned a very negative situation into a positive. We were treated perfectly, exactly the way I presumed we would have been treated from the minute we entered the hotel . The service we received from him could not be faulted. I can only thank him for resolving the problem and making it the celebratory occasion it was supposed to be. In conclusion the actual afternoon tea was pleasant but nothing out of the ordinary and without doubt over priced. The Municipal need to up their game if they wish to be known as a true 4star hotel. Staff need to be trained, the afternoon tea experience on their website certainly does not deliver in reality. I thank the manager who dealt with me profusely as without him the experience would have been a disaster. The actual hotel is stunning and could be so much more but attention to detail is required .

Booked a last minute table in the Seaforth restaurant. Day of booking didn’t receive confirmation and couldn’t get through to hotel, phone lines were down . Left message with Spa and the next day received a call and email reassurance table was booked . Had drinks in the Palm Court many times and love the table service. Staff are attentive at all times. Michael & Bella in the restaurant were fantastic, talked us through what we needed to know and banter with them was good. Menu not vast but what was on offer was delicious the scallops and cod were stunning. Definitely worth a visit 👍

What went well : Opulent building Palm bar beautiful Check in and being shown to room - very good Food menu in palm bar Cocktail selection Cleanliness of spa Breakfast a la carte menu Lovely room - suite very clean, Nespresso coffee machine - good house keeping Bar manager Even better if : Service is extremely slow for drinks in Palm Bar - more bar staff needed had to keep asking where the drinks were when the food arrived or even if just asking for a drink. Breakfast seems disorganised : Breakfast a la carte took over 50 mins to arrive - kept asking staff where the order was!!! Other guests who came in later had eaten and left!! Disappointing. Breakfast buffet items kept running out e.g no pan au chocolate topped up just an empty plate remained, bread ran out took ages to arrive, orange juice ran out, yogurt in little pots not on ice nor was the butter so both warm and soggy, coffee serviced in tiny mugs so have to keep asking for a top up, tables left with plates and food for a long time - feels like training is needed of staff by managers/leaders. No veggie full English or full Liverpool on a la carte menu Menu in main restaurant in evening had a lack of veggie choice No spa bag given to us on arrival just a towel!!! Spa down stairs on arrival seems derelict lift not working, lack of cups for water both in relaxation room and upstairs in pool area, no one answering door had to wait for a long time to be let in. Relaxation room for a top end spa lacking no selection of teas etc just some school canteen jugs one said ice no ice to be seen in jug almost run out and one had a tiny peace of lemon! No cups in the relaxation room! very poor for a spa of this standard. At end of a very expensive treatment was not shown to relaxation room and offered a tea/refreshment and little snack as in other 5 star spa hotels/ 5 star spa locations. Very surprised at this lack of luxury at end of the treatment. Relaxation room cold sat in before treatment. Nor did I fill in any paperwork before treatment again very out of sorts for a top notch spa. Lots of guests on phones in spa - not very relaxing and I’m not sure guests want photos of them on social media in swimwear!!! Not a great policy to allow phones in the spa. No one showed us the lockers not how to use to left with some instructions of how to get to the pool area. It’s almost like spa colleagues need some high end training urgently. There is better service in my local council run gym. This is a shame I was going for a luxury experience given the expense of the treatments etc. Not sure at the moment if these are teething issues, but as a gold Accor and diamond Hilton I travel across the world a lot and stay in some very fancy 5 star hotels if the spa in this hotel wants to survive it needs to up its game for the very high prices charged!!!!!!!! If Accor is running this spa or has contracted out the running of the spa it seriously needs to up its game! Room - no mini bar (we gave a deposit), bathroom amenities for a 5 star hotel a little on the tight side, only one can of still and sparkling water this room is 340 plus a night. Better in room amenities in the Novotel in Birmingham!! Eg for gold member little welcome gift in room and lots of bathroom amenities. Feels like Accor still need to give colleagues a lot of training both in spa team, breakfast needs reflection it’s not great as you would expect in a hotel of this standard, bar service and customer service.

The staff made it for us. So many hotels of late make you feel like you're a burden to them and that they're more important, but they gave an unpretentious welcome and done whatever they could to make our stay a lovely experience. Special thanks to Charlotte and the Concierge.

Had a staycation at the Municipal Hotel last night. The hotel is a grade 2 listed building that has been beautifully converted from council offices to a lovely hotel. The decor really emphasises the architectural features of the hotel. However, not only is the hotel lovely, the staff are too. Everyone we interacted with was enthusiastic, helpful, and clearly enjoyed their working environment. Special mention to concierge, Greg, who took the time to show us around and tell us about the building. I hope he is able to write the book he is planning! Additionally, thank you to Michael Douglas (not the fim star 😊) in the Seaforth restaurant for his friendliness and humour whilst serving us dinner. A credit to the hotel and to Liverpool. This hotel deserves to be No.1 in the city and is absolutely worth a visit.

We had an amazing time. Hotel was beautiful and enormous! Staff were all lovely. There was a mix up on the room I booked. Went back to Reception to explain I had booked a different room to the one we had been allocated. Within a couple of minutes everything was sorted and we were upgraded to the Presidential suite. The room was stunning. Never stayed in a room like it. The copper bath was amazing !!! The bar area is just gorgeous and a highlight of the hotel. We had a drink on Saturday night and enjoyed the DJ. Had the nicest cocktail I have ever had - the Mistral. Prices were not extortionate- typical of a city centre bar. Breakfast was good and came quickly and piping hot. The spa area is quite small but the pool is beautiful. I’m not sure I would pay extra to use it and was glad it was included in our rate. Overall, the Municipal is a stunning building with fantastic staff. Would stay again in a heartbeat. Thank you for making my boyfriend’s birthday so memorable. We will definitely visit again.
